IFC PROGRAMSRESIDENTIAL SERVICESIFC @ SECU Community House: Shelter for Men1315 Martin Luther King Blvd Chapel Hill, NC 27514 Phone: 919-967-1086HomeStart: Shelter for Women and Families Chapel Hill, NC 27514 Phone: 919-932-6025Community House and HomeStart are the only shelters in Orange County for homeless men, women and families. Both locations provide safe living accommodations, meals, and laundry facilities for residents. Staff and volunteer case managers support residents transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing in the community by offering assistance with housing applications, job coaching, and access to needed resources like medical and dental care, mental health or substance use treatment, and clothing. Both locations also provide emergency shelter during inclement weather. The Robert Nixon Clinic, sponsored by UNC Health Care, is located at Community House. Piedmont Health Services coordinates on-site medical, dental and behavioral health care available to all IFC residents.Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing Case managers provide rental assistance for scattered-site, market-rate housing units. Once residents are housed, the case manager is available to troubleshoot issues with landlords or neighbors, and facilitate access to needed resources. These may include mental health and substance use treatment, medical or dental care, food, clothing, credit repair, and financial or job search assistance. Participants are encouraged to identify natural supports – neighbors, faith community

members – and integrate into community life.Rapid Re-Housing is a temporary program for homeless people, who need short-term support. Permanent Supportive Housing supports the 14 most vulnerable, chronically homeless residents, as determined by the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness.

COMMUNITY SERVICESCommunity Kitchen100 W. Rosemary Street Chapel Hill, NC 27516  Phone: 919-967-0643The Community Kitchen serves free meals to anyone who is hungry: lunch every day and dinner every weekday. Nearly all of the food is donated, and volunteer groups prepare, serve and clean up, in addition to helping pick up, sort, and store food. The Kitchen serves almost 40,000 meals every year and also sends out food to low-income senior housing residents and partner food pantries every week.Food Pantry110 W. Main Street Carrboro, NC 27510  Phone: 919-929-6380The Food Pantry provides around 1,100 bags of groceries to people who live or work in Chapel Hill/Carrboro and need help stretching their grocery budget. Food pantry members may come as often as every month, but on average visit twice a year. Emergency Assistance110 W. Main Street Carrboro, NC 27510  Phone: 919-929-6380Emergency assistance is available to anyone who lives or works in Chapel Hill/Carrboro and faces destabilizing economic uncertainty, illness, or acute hardship. Services include financial assistance for rent, utilities, or essential medication; vouchers for clothing or transportation; help obtaining

government identification or earned benefits; information and referrals to existing community resources; access to restrooms; and a permanent address for mail delivery. Community Building & AdvocacyIFC confronts the causes of poverty by fostering belonging and resilience through collective action. In partnership with Justice United and the Community Empowerment Fund, we are developing local leaders at monthly meetings, where those experiencing poverty and homelessness strengthen their social networks, build their advocacy skills and prepare to raise their voices in public policy forums. We stand with our residents and members to address head on the issues that prevent full participation in community life: lack of affordable housing and living wage employment, food insecurity, insufficient public transit, and more.

Together, We Are IFC

Dear Friends,You are more than a list. You’re a force for good.In the following pages, you’ll find a living, breathing network of caring folks like you. Together, you make worlds of difference for individual men, women, and kids. You have also said yes to making this a different kind of community from the bottom up. One where everyone’s basic needs are met, including dignified and affordable housing, an abundance of healthy food, and meaningful social connection.Relieving the stress of povertyResponding to poverty’s effects - hunger, homelessness, social isolation - is easier to imagine than confronting its causes. You feed a child. You shelter a veteran and connect her to resources to get her back on her feet. You provide rent and utility assistance when dad is in between jobs so his family doesn’t lose the apartment, too. Thanks to you, families receive support and feel that deep sense of relief at IFC every day.

In 2017, you helped:• Keep 1,465 families housed with assistance and support• Send home 13,843 bags of groceries• Serve 66,515 hot meals• Provide 33,166 nights of shelter • Move 64 individuals and families into permanent housing

Asking the bigger questionsWe also can’t meet the existing need. Phone calls for help always outnumber appointments. Community House and HomeStart regularly turn men, women and families away. It’s very hard to move people out of the shelters, since affordable housing is scarce. You’re in good company when you start asking bigger questions. What causes poverty? What causes wealth? How do we change the system so fewer people need relief in the first place? In a 1995 interview, Mildred Berkeley said, “what we were doing was not enough.” A First Baptist member, Mildred helped start Community House and Community Kitchen. She cooked and volunteered as a receptionist. She gave so much that IFC named the Volunteer of the Year award after her. She also felt like IFC was not addressing problems on a deep enough level. Mildred was surely not the first and will not be the last.

Investing in deep changeIFC has recently re-focused on confronting the causes of poverty. The goal - to meet people’s basic needs - is the same. The strategies – advocacy and community building – are different. It requires joining with you, community partners, and our local government allies. The work is complex, and it will take longer to see results. But, deepening your investment is necessary to make lasting change.

• Your gifts support our democracy. You’re creating local leaders and engaged citizens through Meeting of the Minds. Residents and members organize for quality of life changes in the IFC shelters and advocate in public policy arenas for affordable housing, accessible transit, and living-wage jobs.

• Volunteers, members, staff, and board members recently formed a Racial Equity Team, facilitated by consultant Tina Vasquez, to guide IFC toward becoming an anti-racist social change organization. This work also means looking internally to make sure IFC’s systems aren’t perpetuating poverty and racism.

• You’re helping us learn and work to implement best practices, such as trauma-informed care, low-barrier shelter, conflict resolution, and Housing First models.

• We multiply the impact of your support by collaborating with the Orange County Affordable Housing Coalition and Justice United to develop affordable housing for residents with fixed or very low incomes. Most recently, a group of 12 Community House residents gave feedback to the Town of Chapel Hill about planned affordable housing on Homestead Road.

Building a just community takes intention and sustained effort. It also means – literally – that every single one of you is part of this work. We can’t thank you enough for opting in and standing with us.

Together, we are IFC.

IFC provides more than just social services, but dignity as well. I am happy to support IFC’s mission because we are all one human family, and by helping one, we help everyone.

I believe that in life talent is distributed equally among people. However, opportunity is not. By providing people with the basic necessities, it allows them the opportunity to grow and discover their talents and contributions to society. IFC does that for our community

Not everyone has an income high enough to make large donations. IFC provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute with skills, time, money, food. Each person can tangibly demonstrate their care, even if they are not well-to-do.

I recently ran into David, an IFC resident and CEF member. He was catching the bus to attend a fellow resident’s memorial service. His constant good cheer and loving attitude heal my heart. He gave me the best hug and took time to chat and ask how I was doing.

In 2016, we noticed the political climate was getting divided, and there was a lot of local news about people suffering. If we want to make change in the world, then it has to start at home. We decided to reach out and volunteer our time at the Community Kitchen. It has been two years, and we haven’t missed our day once.

The more I learned about our Support Circles mom, the more impressed I became with her strength and determination to rise above hard-luck challenges and give her family a good, healthy life. Given her circumstances, I would have struggled with the urge to give up. I believe in the mission, and volunteering through my church is a way to live it.

-Carol P, donor and volunteer

IFC is there when you think you don’t have anybody to talk to or anybody who can relate to what you’re going through. When you’re homeless – and I have been – IFC’s door was open for me. When I didn’t have blankets, they provided. Most off, IFC provides somewhere you can connect and know there’s a life you can hold to your heart, because they’ll find a solution for you to make it through. I volunteer when I can. I would do anything in my power to help IFC, because you have to give back when people give to you.
