Nature of investment: Maintain Coffs Harbour (Solitary Islands Marine Park) Mooring Pair (CH070, CH100). Servicing will continue on an 8-12 week basis. Dates are flexible and dependent on a number of factors, including weather. Scheduled Mooring rotations to continue on PH100, SYD100, SYD140 and ORS065 as planned and outlined in the Implementation Planning Table. Port Hacking Biogeochemical sampling (PH25, PH50, PH100, PH125) to continue as per usual (i.e. monthly by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH)).
Batemans Marine Park Mooring Pair (BMP090, BMP120) to be discontinued and removed from water at next available opportunity.
Implementation Strategy: Summary
Continue to supply accurate and reliable data products and maintain current high levels of temporal coverage from Coffs Harbour and Sydney / Port Hacking sites. Decisions on which moorings to maintain and which moorings to cease (Batemans Marine Park Mooring Pair, Narooma) were made with the best scientific advice available. The decision making process was presented at the NSW IMOS Node meeting in May 2013, and published and presented at an international conference. Roughan, M., Schaeffer, A., Kioroglou, S. (2013). Assessing the design of the NSW-IMOS Moored Observation Array from 2008-2013: Recommendations for the future. In Proceedings of MTS/IEEE Oceans 2013, San Diego USA.
Objectives Maintenance of high-value data streams at Coffs Harbour, (Solitary Islands Marine Park), Sydney, and Port Hacking. Continued improvement in data QC, analysis and research by the greater NSW-IMOS team.
Major activities Primarily, the successful ongoing operation of NSW-IMOS Mooring network and delivery of data.
Expected highlights, difficulties and/or breakthroughs for the NCRIS period Ongoing development of a real time mooring at the ORS by our industry partner OFS. Maintenance of a number of our high-value data streams, and technical expertise. Lowlight going forward is the loss of a number of moorings due to budgetary constraints, in particular, the Batemans Marine Park Mooring Pair (BMP090, BMP120). In addition we have cut the FTE to maintain sustainability into the future.
Equipment to be purchased Limited funding was requested for capital replacement. This includes 2 ADCPs and 4 Acoustic releases. In addition, 20 PT loggers are also needed.
Performance indicators:
Data availability - Temperature and pressure data from Aqualoggers and current velocity profile data from ADCP’s will continue to be made available to eMII as soon as is practicable. Our target is to have instruments equalised, downloaded and raw data backed up within 24-48 hours of mooring retrieval followed by in-house rudimentary QC and processing and upload of processed data to staging at eMII within 2 weeks of retrieval. QC (for sensors, BGC sampling / analysis and CTD data) is as per the agreed ANMN workflows and procedures as per IMOS website. WQM data is available from one mooring on an intermittent basis, and made available with QC issues flagged via the ANMN Matlab toolbox.

Collaborative infrastructure provision: We have engaged Oceanographic Field Services (OFS) as an industry partner, and benefit from the contributions of Sydney Water Corporation (SWC) and NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). SWC and OEH provide the ORS 065 data as an in kind contribution to IMOS. OFS is leading the development of a real time mooring system to be deployed at the ORS. This data will be provided to SIMS (UNSW) in near real time. This is anticipated as a collaborative in kind contribution. NSW OEH contributes substantially to the maintenance of the Port Hacking NRS site and the Port Hacking Transect. We have been undertaking some concurrent t- logger deployments with AATAMS in the Narooma region so that we get overlapping information until the end of the Narooma moorings. This then allows us to continue to correlate the AATAMS temperature data with the 3 year temperature time series obtained at Narooma and gap fill.
Fostering collaborative and world-class research: We collaborate closely with international colleagues at for example Rutgers NJ, U. Hawaii, Scripps (USA). An ARC discovery Proposal has been submitted with colleagues at U Hawaii and CSIRO Marine Research to assess the design of the NSW-IMOS array.
Budgets – The Operator has confirmed the cash and in-kind budget for this Facility in November 2013.
