1‐ PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to describe the responsibilities and procedures used
for identifying and classifying various waste categories generated as a result of
carrying out the School’s activities, projects and/or services, their segregation,
minimization, treatment and/or disposal. This procedure also aims to promote the
policy of reduction, re‐use, and recycling whenever possible.
2‐ SCOPE
The scope of this procedure applies to waste categories (solid and liquid) from
their generation as a result of the School’s activities, projects and/or services, their
segregation, transfer and/or transport and disposal to the approved designated
disposal sites utilizing the services of authorized and appropriately licensed waste
management service providers.
3‐ TERMS & DEFINITIONS
The following Terms and Acronyms are used within this document and are defined

4‐ RESPONSIBILITIES
4‐1 IMS Management Representative is responsible for:
4‐1‐1 Ensuring the safe and correct implementation of this procedure on all
related activities within the organization.
4‐1‐2 Ensures that all employees, subcontractors and stakeholders
understand the policies and requirements of this procedure, and that
they receive appropriate awareness and training on the
implementation of its requirements.
4‐1‐3 Identifying and assessing the need for improving waste management
activities in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
4‐1‐4 Oversees and reviews all activities and methods used for the
segregation, storage, treatment and disposal of waste.
4‐1‐5 Recommending and following up on any corrective and preventive
actions resulting from the implementation of this procedure.
4‐2 Senior Management:
4‐2‐1 Provision of necessary resources for the implementation of this
procedure and for the safe coordination of waste management
activates.
4‐2‐2 Periodic review of the status and results of the waste management
practices and recommending any necessary actions for improvement.

4‐3 Project Managers/Department Heads:
4‐3‐1 Adherence to the policies and procedures approved for waste
management.
4‐3‐2 Ensuring the promotion and implementation of the principles of
reduction, recycling, and reusing within their areas of responsibilities.
4‐3‐3 Contracting only authorized and appropriately licensed waste
management service providers.
4‐3‐4 Reporting on the status of implementation of waste management
principles, and any recommendations for improvement.
4‐4 All Employees:
4‐4‐1 Understanding the importance of protecting the environment by
applying best practices in recycling, reduction and reusing and the
approved methods for waste management in the School.
4‐4‐2 Following the procedures and instructions provided for waste
segregation, treatment and disposal, and suggesting any
recommendations for improvement and reduction of waste and
resource consumption within the School’s operations.
4‐5 Sub‐Contractors:
4‐5‐1 Adherence to the School’s policies and procedures provided to them
as part of the contracting process.
4‐5‐2 Ensuring that all activities performed are in compliance with the IMS
policies and procedures of the School, and identifying any cases
where compliance with these policies have been compromised.

5‐ PROCEDURES
5‐1 Waste Identification:
5‐1‐1 Waste, within the environmental management settings, is defined as
any substance, object or material the organization discards, or intends
to discard, or is required to discard as a result of its activities and
operations. Waste can include the following categories:
5‐1‐1‐1 Production or consumption residues
5‐1‐1‐2 Off‐specification products
5‐1‐1‐3 Products whose date for appropriate use has expired
5‐1‐1‐4 Material spilled, lost or having undergone other mishap,
including any materials, equipment etc. contaminated as
a result of the mishap
5‐1‐1‐5 Materials contaminated or soiled as a result of planned
actions (e.g. residues from cleaning operations,
packaging materials, containers etc.)
5‐1‐1‐6 Unusable parts (e.g. reject batteries, exhausted filters etc.)
5‐1‐1‐7 Substances which no longer perform satisfactorily (e.g.
contaminated acids, contaminated solvents etc.)
5‐1‐1‐8 Residues from pollution abatement processes (e.g. spent
filters etc.)
5‐1‐1‐9 Machining or finishing residues (e.g. lathe turnings, mill
scales, wood dust/shavings etc.)
5‐1‐1‐10 Adulterated materials (e.g. oils contaminated with PCBs etc.)

5‐1‐1‐11 Any materials, substances or products whose use has
been banned by law
5‐1‐1‐12 Products for which the holder has no further use (e.g.
agricultural, household, office, commercial and other
shop discards etc.)
5‐1‐1‐13 Contaminated materials, substances or products
resulting from remedial action with respect to land
5‐1‐2 Hazardous waste that may result from the organization’s activities,
projects and operations may include the following categories:
5‐1‐2‐1 infectious clinical wastes (e.g. resulting from the school’s
clinics, medical treatment of students, etc.) 5‐1‐2‐2 waste chemicals and residue from the fume hood (from lab)
5‐1‐2‐3 certain waste medicines and cytotoxic substances
5‐1‐2‐4 infected sharps and sharps contaminated with medicines (e.g.

batteries containing mercury or cadmium)

quantities)

5‐2 Waste Production Control:
5‐2‐1 As far as is reasonably practicable, waste management and waste
minimization will be practiced through the following waste
hierarchy approach to maximize the conservation of resources:

5‐2‐2 Waste produced by routine office activities shall be minimized
through re‐use and recycling wherever practicable.
5‐2‐3 Waste produced from equipment used in operations shall be
minimized through its efficient operation and maintenance in
accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
5‐2‐4 Waste from the classrooms and other areas inside the school shall be
segregated by placing differentiated bins (either through labels or
different color codes) in classes and yards for disposing different
types of waste.
5‐2‐5 The volume of waste produced from various project shall be
monitored through weighing the segregated waste and
recording of waste quantity produced by type of waste.
5‐2‐6 Activities likely to produce additional or non‐routine waste will be
pre‐notified to the IMS MR or the appropriate Department
head/Project Manager, giving as much notice as possible to ensure
the design and implementation of appropriate control measures.
5‐2‐7 The cleaning in-charge shall maintain a log of all waste generated as a
result of the school activities and operations and documenting that
inventory using a ledger on Daily basis.
5-2-8 waste inventory log can be maintained by taking records from the
Bee’ah on weekly/ fortnightly basis (shall be decided after meeting
the representative and making contract) using Form IMS‐07‐F01
associated with this procedure.
5‐3 Waste Handling and Storage:
5‐3‐1 Items classified as waste will be handled with a duty of care in
accordance with legislative requirements.

5‐3‐2 Waste produced through the routine management of premises and
School properties shall be minimized through the prevention of
litter accumulation, and through on–site composting of ground
waste, wherever practicable.
5‐3‐3 Wherever practicable, waste should be compacted before placing in a
storage container for off‐site disposal/recycling.
5‐3‐4 All waste will be stored in a safe and secure manner pending
collection by third party contractors for recovery, recycling or
disposal.
5‐3‐5 All waste will be stored in a manner that prevents its escape, overflow
or spills.
5‐3‐6 Wherever possible, access to waste containers will be restricted to the
School’s designated employees, contractors and contracted waste
collection service providers.
5‐3‐7 Liquid wastes shall be stored in containers appropriate for the
properties of the waste. Such containers will be stored in a suitably
secured area.
5‐3‐8 Waste produced by contractors will be stored in designated areas and
in dedicated sealed containers as provided by the contractor, unless
otherwise agreed by the responsible Department head / Project
Manager / and /or IMS MR. Contractors will demonstrate a duty of
care over any waste produced by them on any project.
5‐3‐9 Redundant IT equipment shall be appropriately labeled and stored
securely pending disposal and arrangements for its collection must be
done for its recycling
5‐3‐10 At locations where provision is made for the segregation of waste for
recycling, the waste collected shall be clearly and appropriately
labeled for Bee’ah to ensure safe and appropriate disposal.
(Different colored bags to be used for different types of waste, as
per the mutual understanding with the waste disposing company).

5‐4 Transportation, Disposal and Collection:
5‐4‐1 Waste produced on School property will only be transported off site
by a registered waste carrier (Bee’ah). A copy of the waste carrier’s
valid registration certificate must be obtained. Historical records of
waste transfer shall be retained as per the School’s records
retention policies.
5‐4‐2 Where applicable, copies of valid waste management licenses for the
final destination of all wastes shall be maintained on sites and
records retained by the School.
5‐4‐3 Waste shall be segregated at source, into wastes requiring disposal and
those for which recycling has been arranged. The weight of the daily
volume of waste for off‐site disposal/recycling shall be recorded.
5‐4‐4 where applicable, waste transferred off‐site will be accompanied by a
waste transfer note, completed and containing information in
accordance with the relevant regulatory requirements and codes of
practice. For regular collections from the same source, a ‘blanket
waste transfer note’ may be used to cover all such transfers during a
period not exceeding 12 months. Copies of waste transfer notes will
be available at all times with the administrator or OEHS coordinator
and retained as per the School’s policy.
5-4-5 hazardous waste from labs and clinic shall be collected through
registered company, (Weqaya, as per the instructions of Sharjah
Municipality). The school lab Attendant shall be responsible to fill the
Application Form to Obtain Permit for Waste disposal, which shall be
sent to Sharjah Municipality who will then transfer the case to
Wekaya for the collection of the hazardous waste.
5-4-6 Hazardous fumes residue shall be collected, transferred and disposed
by the Technical Furniture Industries LLC, who are responsible for the
maintenance and cleaning of the fume hood. The detailed report is
given by the company using the two forms; Maintenance Checklist
form, and Performance Report Form.
5‐4‐7 Redundant IT equipment will be sent for recycling to an approved
contractor wherever practical.
5‐4‐8 The waste transport activities must be documented using the Form
__________Waste Transfer Note, this is done by the contracting
company.(Bee’ah)
