Cambodian-Japanese Writing Exchange Program 2013-14

Guidelines for Japanese Students

For this program, you will have a writing partner with one of Nicole’s students at the Bayon English Academy (BEA) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Through this program, you can learn about the culture and lifestyle of Cambodian students, and also describe Japanese culture and lifestyle in English. You will also learn how to write informal letters and improve your writing skills. Bayon English Academy (BEA) is an NGO school in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Nicole and her NGO partner, Shally Toun, started the school in September 2010 to provide quality English language education to underprivileged youth from the poorest villages in the area. BEA received accreditation from the Ministry of Education as an official secondary-level educational institution in August 2011. In its second year, there are now ninety students attending one of the four courses offered at BEA. A. Letter Topics Letter 1: Self-Introduction and Lifestyle

For the first part of your letter, introduce yourself to your writing partner. You can write about your family, studies, free time, future hopes or any other topic. For the second part, describe your lifestyle, such as your morning, afternoon, and evening activities. You can also write about what you eat, what jobs or chores you do, what you do for fun or other activities. You can use drawings to help explain your activities.

Letter 2: Culture Choose a Cambodian festival, holiday or a traditional practice, and describe it to your writing partner. You need to explain what people do and why they do it, as well as the history and the symbolism connected to this activity. Use drawings to explain your ideas to your partner.

Letter 3: Education Describe your educational experiences in Cambodia. You can write about your studies at public school, at BEA and at other NGOs. Make sure to include specific examples from your life to help your partner understand the differences between the Cambodian and Japanese education systems.
