Normal boundaries

What we believe to be true

What we see as socially acceptable

Combining unrelated ideas to make a new one.

What is Creativity?

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

11March 30, 2015

Ideas going beyond the current boundaries, whether

those boundaries are based on technology, knowledge,

social norms, or beliefs

Most people are creative at some time

May involve combining and synthesizing new things

Knowledge-creating organization: an organization

where innovation is going on at all levels and in all

Right vs. Left Brain

14March 30, 2015

The concept of right brain and left brain thinking

developed from the research in the late 1960s of an

American psycho biologist Roger W Sperry.

He discovered that the human brain has two very

different ways of thinking.

Sperry was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1981, although

subsequent research has show things aren't quite as

polarized as once thought (nor as simple).

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

Left Brain vs. Right Brain

15March 30, 2015

We certainly do have two hemispheres in our brain,

each responsible for different physical abilities.

Furthermore, physically we are “cross connected,”

meaning that the right side of our brain controls the

left side of our bodies and vice versa.

For example, if a patient has a stroke and is

paralyzed on the left side of their body, the stroke

has damaged the right side of their brain.

Left Brain vs. Right Brain

16March 30, 2015

So the “two brains” have different physical

responsibilities. But could they have different

emotional and cognitive responsibilities as well?

According to Roger W Sperry, indeed they could

AND do.

According to this theory, every person is

dominantly right or left brained when it comes

to emotional and cognitive functions.Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

RIGHT AND LEFT BRAIN AND BUSINESS

March 30, 2015 Integrated Capstone: Case Study

The key ingredient for Invention and Innovation is creativity.

Creativity is a trait of Right Brain dominance

So, Right brain thinkers might be naturally more successful as Inventors and/or innovators.

Does that mean that Left Brain thinkers cannot be inventors or innovators? NO!

There are ways to strengthen your right brain, including: doing brain teasers, taking a creative class (art, etc.), brainstorm, be open to big ideas, listen to others, etc.

THE THINKING HAT THEORY

March 30, 2015

Have you ever heard the saying, “put on your thinking hat?”

Well, this theory believes that there are 6 such “thinking hats,” or, 6 ways of thinking.

21

EDWARD DE BONO

March 30, 2015

Edward de Bono is regarded by many to be the

leading authority in the world in the field of

creative thinking

He is the originator of lateral thinking

The Hats represent six thinking strategies, and if

understood and applied, people could be more

productive in meetings and in collaborating within

groups and teams by deliberately using the

approaches

BRAINS AND HATS

March 30, 2015

Which hats do you think match each brain?

Red – emotional thinking

Yellow – positive thinking

White – factual thinking

Black – critical thinking

Green – creative thinking

Blue – leadership/management

“Innovation is not the

product of logical thought,

although the result is tied to

logical structure.” Albert

Einstein

different results, is the

definition of crazy.” Unknown

Innovation

26March 30, 2015

A process of intentional change made to create

value by meeting opportunity and seeking

advantage

Ideas have little value unless they are converted

into useful product and services

Process:

Invention Change Useful implementation

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

What is Innovation?

27March 30, 2015

Innovations are new ways to achieve tasks.

Types of innovations include:

Mechanical—tractors, cars.Chemical—pesticides.Biological—seed varieties.Managerial—IPM, extra pay for work, overtime.Institutional—water users’ association, patents, banks, stock market, conservation districts, monks.

It is useful to distinguish between process

innovations (new biotechnology procedures) and

product innovations (Bt cotton).

• new ideas:• knowledge• concepts

• inventions:• technologies• business models

• useful implementation:• products• services• experiences

key Concepts

29March 30, 2015

An innovation starts as a concept that is refined and developed before application.Innovations may be inspired by reality. The innovation process, which leads to useful technology, requires:

ResearchDevelopment (up-scaling, testing)Production MarketingUse

Experience with a product results in feedback and leads to improved innovations.

The Innovation Process

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

30March 30, 2015

What is the difference between invention and innovation?

Invention - the creation of something new.

Innovation - a change to something that already

exists

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

Definitions

31March 30, 2015

Innovation is different from invention

You don’t need to invent to innovate

Guy Kawasaki says:

“COPY SOMEBODY … clever people have pretty much

invented every business model that’s possible. You

can innovate in technology, markets, and customers,

but inventing a new business model is a bad bet. You

have plenty of other battles to fight.”

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

Do you have to invent to innovate?

32March 30, 2015

The Do’s

Analysis-importance at different times

Conceptual and Perceptual

Look, ask, listen.

Focused, Start small

The Donts

Don’t be too clever

Don’t bring in too many things at once, they will remain as ideas not innovations

Don’t innovate for the future. Do it for the present.

Integrated Capstone: Creativity & Innovation

Principles of Innovation

33March 30, 2015

Where can you look to find ideas for inventions and/or innovations?

Newspaper - tells you about business trends; the classifieds tell you about local needs and wants, etc.

Magazines - predict and report changes in consumer buying, etc.

Trade Shows - manufacturers and distributors display their newest products and services, etc.

Be observant - you must be aware of your surroundings. What patterns exist there? What do these patterns tell you about needs and wants?

36

TECHNOLOGY S-CURVE

March 30, 2015

Begins with a ‘learning curve’ as technology is better understood

Technology approaches a natural limit as it matures

Gradually engineering effort produces diminishing returns

Eventually technology is superseded and switch to new technology occurs

New technology = new S-curve
