As an Introduction…

…let me hook you with one of the best fish stories you’ve ever heard…

Page 3: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

If you give If you give a man a fish...a man a fish...

……with a twist!with a twist!

Understanding “Business as Mission”Understanding “Business as Mission”

Page 4: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

If you give a man a fish…

…he will eat for a day.

Page 5: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

If you teach a man how to fish…

…he will eat for…

…as long as he can borrow your fishing pole!

Page 6: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

If you give the man a fishing pole……he will eat until the line breaks and he loses all his lures!

Page 7: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

However…

If you teach a man how to make fishing poles and lures…

…he will eat for a lifetime.

Page 8: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

If you……teach a man how to produce fishing poles and lures,

…train him how to start and run a small business,

…provide him with some investment capital to get started…

Page 9: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

Then…

Then he can…

…hire some others who are also poor,

…make many poles and lures,

…sell them to his friends and neighbors as payment for fish!

Page 10: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

Then he will eat for a lifetime, his employees and their families will eat for

a lifetime, and many people in his community will eat for a lifetime!

Page 11: Integra Sme Development Master 2010

The “marketplace” in the Bible…

• Of Jesus’ 132 public appearances in NT, 122 were in the marketplace.

• Of 52 parables Jesus told, 45 had a workplace context. • Of 40 divine interventions recorded in Acts, 39 were in the

marketplace or public square. • Jesus spent his adult life as a carpenter until age 30 before he

went into a preaching ministry in the workplace. • Jesus called 12 normal working individuals, not clergy, to

build His church. And some of them had questionable professions (tax collector, zealot)

• The Bible makes more references to caring for the poor than it does to heaven, hell or the second coming.

The 7 Miracles of Socialism!

1. Each had a job!2. Even when each had a job, nobody did anything.3. Even when nobody did anything, the plan was

achieved more than 100%.4. Even when the plan was achieved more than 100%,

there was nothing in the shops.5. Even when there was nothing in the shops,

everybody had everything.6. Even when everybody had everything, all stole.7. Even when everybody stole, nothing was missing!
