Jarlath Regan is not you’re average comedian. He doesn’tspeak at the speed of light, hedoesn’t try to make you laughevery two minutes and hedoesn’t send you nice Christmas cards. He is simply well-spoken, you can’t help but giggle and he’s not on your Christmascard list either – so neither of you really care.

Editor, Emer Mulvaney spoke to Jarlath ahead of his stint in the Iveagh Gardens thismonth and found herself warm to the cheeky chappy instantly...

So let’s start at thebeginning –you’ve been doingcomedy for lessthan 10 years –what kicked it all off?I suppose a lot of people start off in the Interna-tional bar but I probably didn’t start there. I wasunusual. I was kinda doing it in college – likegetting up in front of people and making funnyspeeches. If I had a presentation I’d write it forthe marks but I’d also write it for the laughs. Itfelt more powerful that way. I never reallythought of it [comedy] as a job though or some-thing you could do. I thought it was for the likesof Billy Connolly and Eddie Murphy but as soonas I left college I missed it..

Tell me about yourfirst gig.Well I suppose it was in Toronto [college days] atthe World Debating Championships after we hadwon a trip there. We were doing horribly – Imean dying on our hole – and then one night itwas comedy night. I had seven minutes and acertain amount of jokes and I just went for it. Inhindsight I was pure shite but I was so excitedand so determined. That’s one thing youdefinitely need starting out – determination.Everybody sucks in the beginning, whether yourealise it or not – but it gets better!

By 2004 you’dmade finalist inthree major UKcomedy awards –that was a hugeachievement soearly on!Yeah by that stage I was gigging around town intwo-minute spots – trying to win full-paid spots– and I entered a few competitions. Suddenly Iwas in Edinburgh and i tjust took off from there. At the time I was still in a ‘proper job,’ in theaccountancy sector of a graphic design firm -meeting clients and pretending to have a cluewhat I was doing - but then the company hit therocks. My initial reaction was to get another jobbut then my wife convinced me to give it[comedy] a proper go. It’s what I had wanted todo for so long so I did and suddenly there I wason the circuit with guys who were my heroes.

So was that intimidating or howdid you work it?No they were absolutely great. I was luckyenough to be signed by the same agent as DavidO’Doherty which gave me lots of opportunities, especially in that first year when I got a lot ofadvice. Ardal O’Hanlon was another one whowas really great, he was always asking what hecould do to help which was amazing.

15

Page 16: InTallaght EDITION 17

Nobody knows Jarlath Reganbrought you face toface with even moreof your comedy heroes – what wasthat like?Yes TV3 asked me to do that show. It was a mockumen-tary where I pretended to be my own agent in Edinburghand blag my way into as many gigs as possible. I justcompletely got the bug. Edinburgh is like comedybootcamp. It’s the most inspiring, soul destroying andamazing place all at the one time!

This is your seventhyear back to Edinburgh now – is there pressure tobe even funnier thenext year, each time?In a weird kind of way some people think it’s a lot morepressure but unlike most other jobs you get better. Thereare a lot of similarities between standup and sport onlyin sport you are generally spent at 32. If you’re doing theright things you should have plenty more time left incomedy at that stage. You don’t feel the pressure to befunnier though you just know that the audience paid tosee you therefore you owe them a good show.

When supporting areyou/can you be influ-enced by the materialof the main act?In the club environment , like when you are playing thelikes of the International bar, you have to be there thewhole night because if the person on before you talks tosomeone in the front row you don’t want to be askingthem all over again what their name is etc – no one willwant to hear it. In a weird way it’s observational comedy. In terms of stuff I write though no, what influences youis how hard other people work. There’s a whole mentality– if he’s working hard I have to work harder.

You’ve said you met alot of your comedyheroes along theway, these includemeeting Chris Rock

and Adam Sandler -do you get startsruck? I was doing a pilot for a TV show and they told me I wasgoing to be interviewing a couple of people. I said thatwas grand but when I went in there was Chris Rock, KevinJames, David Spade and Adam Sandler. In a funny way Ithought I’d be starstruck by the likes of these guys butthey were just guys like us – guys like us but with a lotmore money but nice genuine lads! In fairness you neversee people who are pr**ks make it to the top. These wereno exception. So, no I don’t get starstruck, you just endup realising that everyone’s just a person trying to dotheir best – that said if I met Steve Martin I’d probablylose it!

You’ve done quite abit of TV now, published two booksand produce yourown infamous greeting cards –which element ofyour career do you prefer?Stand up I adore with all of my heart. I would do it forfree if I had to. The cards and the TV come from the standup. They keep it fresh but I like a lot of things. I lovecartoons and I love sketches but stand up is the pure formwhere nobody is going to tell you what to do.

How do you preparea show?Well if it’s the day of the show you get yourself together, plan what you’re going to say and prepare your set ingeneral. The longer, overaching, process is really whittlingaway at a desk, going into little clubs and trying yourstuff out on stage bit by bit and gradually building yourshow.

Do you run materialby your wife beforetaking it on stage? My wife [Tina] is amazing that way. I do say a lot of stuffabout her, and us, on stage but her attitude is that that’swhat I do and she signed up for this. I’m blessed to haveher.

Anyone who believes that all of what you say on stageis true anyway hasn’t a clue. I do talk about some of themost painful stuff in a relationship like men being a painin the arse and women being a pain in the arse and thefact we can’t agree on it! And we do annoy each otherbut we need each other too.

16

Page 17: InTallaght EDITION 17

17

Page 18: InTallaght EDITION 17

How do you handle hecklers?I actually rarely get heckled. I find that if you takethe piss out of yourself enough you’ve beatenthem to it. Really if someone heckles you and saysthat they don’t think that you’re funny but every-one else in the audience is laughing then theheckler is the one who looks stupid.

Is drink to blamefor most of theheckling?Drink plays a part in it but most of the time all youhave to do is explain that nobody wants to hearwhat they have to say then it suddenly dawns onthem and you can see it happening. I don’t reallydrink myself anymore because there is too muchdrink in comedy to be healthy!

What’s the most embarrassingthings that’s every happened to you on stage?I’ve had so many embarrassing things happen tome on stage it’s ridiculous. I work with a projectora lot and I’ve had one explode, I’ve fallen, I’vewalked on stage with my fly down, I’ve spilledwater all over me on stage, I’ve slagged off JeremyPaxman and run into him after the show whenhe was in the audience all along! It’s part andparcel of the job and more often than not thehumiliation ends up being a story for another night.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?The thing that makes me most proud is just making a life for myself, my kid and my wife outof making people laugh. That’s what makes me proudest. There is no greater achievement.Making a living out of shit that I make up!

Tell me about the Iveagh gardensgig – what can people expect from the show? For me it will be a mixture of humiliating stories from throughput the year and I’ll be hostingone of the shows too. The setting is magical and I reckon that people should go even if they’veseen the shows before because this is the gig, just ahead of Edinburgh, where everyone is attheir peak.

Who will you go to see yourself? The person I am most excited about is Tim Key who plays a character who is a shit poet andhe creates the worst best poetry you have ever seen. I am also on with David O’Doherty so Iam excited about that.

What are you up to over the nextfew months and where can peoplefind you – you’re website says “oopsI haven’t updated!” are you going on holiday after Edinburgh?’[Laughs] I know I’m very bad! No, the weird thing about my stage career at the moment isthat I don’t take holidays. You just have to keep going. After Edinburgh I have lots of dates inthe UK, I am also working on a TV project and will have a new book out in 2013.

Jarleth’s comedy quiz show returns to the Sugar Club from September. In the meantime hewill be performing at the Vodafone Comedy Festival from this July 26 – 29. For moreinformation log onto www.vodafonecomedy.com

Funnyman Paul Tylak is an award-winning comedian who has excelled ineverything from stand up, to writing, acting, voice over and improv in a careerthat’s spanned just over twenty years. Beginning his career in the early 90s fans may recognise Paul from TV shows includingFather Ted and STEW – a show which he both wrote and acted in and which won him anIFTA along the way. He has also toured the International comedy festival circuit as a standup and is one of Europe’s most sought after voice over artists, appearing in a number ofanimated movies including the Academy Award-nominated The Secret of Kells.

Fresh from supporting Ardal O’Hanlon on tour Paul took time out of his busy schedule tospeak with InTallaght magazine about playing animated Grannies among other things...

So whereabouts inTallaght do you live?I live in Firhouse, I’ve been living here for the last six years.I live with my wife Ailicia, the most amazing woman inthe world, and our two sons Cal (10) and Reuben (8) whoare my greatest critics and don’t hold back on telling meif they think anything I’ve done is crap!

When did you decideto be a comedian? Only in the last year of school, on the very last day I didan impression of one of the teachers, which everyonethought was great. I got a great buzz from that, but Iwasn’t the class clown in school or anything. I wanted tobe in a band or do something which involved travelling.

When you wereyoung who wereyour favorite comedians? I loved Woody Allen, from his books to his early movies, also Steve Martin, though not mad about his stand up,Robin Williams, Billy Connolly, Monthy Python and SpikeMilligan.

You’ve done standup, acting, writingand voice over, whichof these is yourfavourite?Probably doing the voice overs for animated filmsbecause I get to do different characters in the same film.

I tend to do a lot of parts as the “Granny” or as the “Dad”or both at the same time, which is good fun!

What has been thehigh point of your career?Working on STEW, writing and doing that was very re-warding and winning an IFTA award for it is a high pointin my career. Also getting a pilot off the BBC (Be MoreEthnic).

And the low points?Working on Noel’s House Party for half a season! I wouldlike to think I played a part in its demise!

Any funny storiesfrom your career so far? That would also be to do with Noel’s House Party! On oneof the shows I was dressed up as a cuckoo/chicken and Iwas supposed to come flying through a clock whilesuspended 50 ft up in the air in a harness at the very endof the show. Anyway, the sketch was pulled at the lastminute after I’d been put in the harness but whateverhappened they forgot to take me down off the harness. So I was left hanging there in this harness 50 ft in the air,all on my own in the studio, while everyone else feckedoff to the pub. Eventually a porter found me…

Any advice for aspiring comics?Get as much stage time as you can and take every gigyou can get. Also record your gigs and listen back to themas you can really notice what works and what needs tobe dropped.

What current come-dians do you like? Sean Lock, Phil Kay, Chris Rock. I also like MichaelMcIntyre, I know a lot of people don’t like him but I do.This might be influenced by the fact that I introducedhim in Kilkenny a few years ago, before he got famous, and got chatting to him, he was a very nice person. I likehis energy on stage, the way he bounces around.

If you could work withanyone in the worldwho would it be? Larry David because of the way he writes and doesimprov. His interaction with the audience is amazing. He

20

Page 21: InTallaght EDITION 17

actually spends longer writing the script for Curb YourEnthusiasm than he did for Seinfeld.

If you weren’t a comedian whatwould you like to do?I’m very interested in Physics and would like to do researchinto dark matter, black holes and Nano technology.

Have you beenwatching Euro 2012? Yes, all the matches, I think we did well to just get there,it was such a tough group that it would have beenunbelievable to have got to the quarter finals. It mightmean we have to now bring in more young players, playa bit more attacking. I think Trap needs to go as well.

What did you think of Roy Keane’s comments? He was very disrespectful, those lads had tried their best. He’s like an old lunatic granny at pro wrestling stickinghis knitting needles into the wrestlers because theybelieve it’s all real. He should just shut up, he should haveno say after walking out on his country. It’s like he shaton his own doorstep and doesn’t like the smell!

In 2001 you played arefugee in Fair Cityand were vocal inyour support forrefugees coming tothis country. Your father is also Sri Lankan, how doyou think attitudestowards immigrantshave changed in2012? Well we’re a lot further down the road now than we wereback then so it’s a bit more tolerant, there’s more exposureto different cultures now, which is great. You might stillget the odd idiot shouting something at someone on thestreet but if that person is just after arriving from acountry where they may have witnessed genocide thensome idiotic taunt would be water off a ducks back tothem I’d imagine.

What are you working on at themoment?I’ve just finished work on two animated movies Thor andNiko 2 and was on tour with Ardal (O’Hanlon) which wasbrilliant. I’m also working on a script at the moment withJoe Rooney and Paul Woodfall (co-writer on STEW) aboutan old boy band getting back together. I’m also involvedwith the Improv Comedy Night in The International everyMonday night which I love. You have a lot more freedomwith improv and the audiences have a good laugh - youshould come down and check it out!

Tom Hardy, seems to be the ‘IT BRIT’ actor at the moment and rightly so, havingturned in some great performances in Bronson, Warrior and Tinker Tailor SoldierSpy, to name a few. Hardy stated his intention to portray the character as "moremenacing" than Robert Swenson's version of him in Joel Schumacher's Batman& Robin, and gained 14 kg of muscle for the role.

Anne Hathaway, who plays Selina Kyle aka Cat Woman has been reported assaying that this role was her most physically demanding to date, especiallyfitting into the character's signature leather costume. "It was a psychologicalterrorist, the suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into thatsuit... It dominated my year," she said.

The premise of the movie follows the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, which occurred in The Dark Night. Batman assumes responsibility for Dent's

crimes to protect his reputation and is subsequently hunted by the GothamCity Police Department. Eight years after the events Batman returns to Gotham, where he encounters the mysterious Selina Kyle and the villainous Bane, andmust confront the latter's plans to destroy the city.

Movie goers are set for a treat as the previous two installments of Batmanhave been brilliant. It will definately be my first pick out of the Superhero moviesgoing to be released up to the back end of 2012.

The movie which stars, Jonah Hill (who also co-wrotethe script) and Channing Tatum, is said to be hilarious, with plenty of funny one liners and some comicalscenes.

The two characters, Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum),originally knew each other from high school but theydidnt socialise together being on the opposite ends ofthe popularity spectrum, where Schmidt (Hill) was anunpopular geeky nerd and Jenko (Tatum) a well-likedjock.

The premise of the movie is the two, now cops, getassigned to a local high school to go undercover asstudents to try and uncover the source of a new drugwhich is being circulated - mainly by quirky student,Eric (Dave Franco).

The rest of the movie follows the two cops clumsilytrying to make their way through the drug ring, whileat the same time trying to keep there identities secret.Make way for plenty of crude jokes and hilarioussituations.

Hill, looking totally different from his Superbad days,is said to have retained plenty of his comic wit andtiming. Tatum on the other hand, is reported as beinga total surprise. He’s new to the comedy genre but hasan ability to create humor in his thick and goofy manner.

A nice touch in the movie are the small cameoapperances from Johnny Depp, Holly Robinson andPeter Deluise – who all starred in the original TVseries – despite the fact that it will more than likelywill be lost on most of the younger audience memberswith them being too young to remember.

There’s just no denying the fact that the phrase ‘catchy tune’ was made for a band like Maroon 5 – which has built a reputation on releasing such.

The band’s latest single is no different. Payphone is aquirky record in that it’s maudlin but with a pacey beat. The song is about a guy who is looking back on therelationship he once had and accepting the fact that‘even the sun sets in paradise. ‘ He’s obviously been lefthigh and dry and is bitter to say the least but in a comicaltwist the lyrics and the music send out different vibes.

For example if you were to take away lines like “All thosefairytales are full of sh*t, one more f*cking love song I’llbe sick” and listened to the music alone you would nodoubt be tapping your foot and thinking about getting

up and out of your seat. Throw the lyrics back into themix, however, and you’re unsure if that foot tapping isnothing more than dancing on the grave of this poorguy’s relationship. Then you realise you don’t really carebecause if it is, hasn’t he brought it on himself by sendingout mixed musical signals.

The feature by rapper Wiz Khalifa is a cool twist to a songwhich will remain on everyone’s lips this summer.

Elon Musk recently spoke aboutthe superior performance, groundbreaking technologyand unparalleled safety of hiselectric Tesla Model S.A $49,900 four-door saloon due out this month he seemed genuinely excited toshare the finer points of the car–especially an elegant touchscreen console thesize of an iPad.

“The guy who did the screen for the iPad touch was in charge of this screen–werecruited him out of Apple,” Musk says. “He wanted to be part of something thatwas really changing the world in a positive way. Apple makes great consumerdevices, but it’s not saving the world, you know. We feel a little bit like we’re savingthe world by bringing electric cars out.”

It’s a sentiment integral to the philosophy of the Palo Alto, California-basedcompany. Musk believes that cars should work as seamlessly in life - and requireabout as much maintenance -as a laptop or a cell phone.

They should also be just as accessible too. Tesla has sold out of all 5,000 Model Sunits planned for next year, with a waiting list 1,500 people deep but Musk sayshe’ll produce 20,000 a year by 2013. Most of the initial buyers are Californians, witha 50/50 split between men and women. Only 10 per cent own the $109,000 TeslaRoadster–the rest are newcomers.

“Most have never bought an electric car or a hybrid,” Musk said. “That’s goodbecause you want people to buy the car because it is the best car. You don’t wantthem saying, I’m going to accept something else because it’s electric. You wantthem saying, To hell with that. I want the best car!”

Model S will appeal to BMW 5-Series andPorsche Panamera owners who, Musk says, want something that handles better anddrives faster than the standard luxurysedan. But he doesn’t hesitate to add thatcompetitors will also include the similar-looking $200,000 Aston Martin Rapide and$128,000 Maserati Quattroporte.

With a 300-mile-range lithium ion batteryand a claimed 0-60 mph time of 4.5seconds, the Model S will beat them bothon the road.

“From a performance standpoint we didconsciously intend to beat them,” Musksays. “This is intended to be the bestperformance sedan out there.”

The jury’s still out on just how well theModel S handles—Musk declined to allowtest drives to the media until they have a

press-ready version in a few months. However, we can tell you that it’s a smooth-driving, quick, roomy saloon, with a fantasticsound system and what is likely the largestpanoramic sunroof available in anyproduction vehicle.

Elon Musk is a South Africa-bornAmerican entrepreneur and inventorbest known for co-founding TeslaMotors, SpaceX and Paypal. While atthose companies Musk created the firstviable electric car of the modern era,the Tesla Roadster, a private rocket andspaceship successor to the SpaceShuttle known as Falcon 9/Dragon, andthe world's largest Internet paymentsystem, PayPal. He is currently the CEOand Chief Designer of SpaceX, CEO andProduct Architect of Tesla Motors andChairman of SolarCity.

Treyarch, who last brought usCall of Duty Black Ops, have decided to go a different routewith Black Ops 2. The single player part of the game will be set in two different time periods. Onehalf is in the 1970s and one half in the 1980s, while the other will be set in 2025.

Alex Mason, the protagonist from Black Ops, will return for the Cold War era proxy wars, whilein the future setting will be Alex's son, David Mason.

Known areas that Alex will be fighting in are Central America and the parts of Afghanistaninvaded by the Soviets during the Cold War. #Spoiler# Alex's friend from Black Ops, FrankWoods, who we thought to be dead, returns to narrate the games story into the 2025 setting.#End Spoiler#

In the future setting of the game, the world is in a new Cold War. It's a stand-off betweenChina and America. China has banned the export of rare earth elements, following a cyber-attack on the Chinese Stock exchange which cripples them.

34

Page 35: InTallaght EDITION 17

In a world where war is fought behind a computermonitor using cyber warfare, unmanned drones androbotics instead of in the field, a hacking attack onAmerica’s drones have caused them to go rogue.

The person behind the cyber-attacks on both nations isRaul Menendez, who wants both nations to have a fullscale war with each other. It's not yet known whyMenendez wants a war but he is doing his very best toget one.

After taking over all of America’s drones he sends half ofthem to Shanghai in China, and the other half to attackcities around the US.

In the first mission we're shown, you start as David Masonwho is trying to defend the president as they are underattack from these rogue drones.

The real beauty of Black Ops 2 is not that it's the first Callof Duty game set in the future but that is has branchingstorylines and multiple endings to the game. Thesebranching storylines are done through 'Strike ForceMissions', where your choice affects how the whole gameplays out.

Strike force missions are special missions that, oncepicked, lock you out of other missions in the game. Youplay as a different character, which can use drones, jetfighters and robots to assist you in the Strike forcemissions.

The difference between the main campaign andthese side missions are that if you die, thatcharacter remains dead for the rest of the story. You jump right back to the main storyline. Thiscould even affect the outcome of Menendez’splans. By the end of the game you may havechanged the results of the new Cold War or failedto have stopped it. Either way, you will be shownwhat could have been.

This adds so much replay value to a game that youcould, possibly, have only play once and beenbored of a second time around. This is whatTreyarch are doing to save the Call of Dutyfranchise and it appears to be working.

Another feature Treyarch have become famous forwith their Call of Duty games is, of course, theZombie mode. This time instead of just trying tosurvive for as long as you can, there is a mainstoryline to follow.

This will make for a more interesting game insteadof seeing how long you can last. Treyarch has alsosaid that the new zombie mode will featureeight-player co-op instead of the usual four-playerco-op.

It is set for release on the 13th of November2012. It will be released on Xbox 360, Playstation3, Microsoft Windows, the Wii and the Wii U.

Jeremy Clarkson does not like electric cars.Among his more reasonable objections are that you can't go much further than100 miles on a charge, and that the batteries might cost a bit to replace whenthey wear out. Well, Renault's Fluence ZE might go some way to making him feela bit warmer towards pure electric cars – at least on these fronts.

First of all, the Fluence "Zero Emissions" manages to look like a normal car. That'sreally not a given – the G-Wiz, for example, looks like something drawn by asugar-addled five-year-old. The Fluence, by comparison, is a handsome and quiteconventional saloon. Observers won't have a clue that it's powered by electronsinstead of petrol.

Based on a petrol car’s design, this electric version does 0-62mph in 13secs and atop speed of 84mph. Those aren't sports car numbers of course, but because theFluence ZE delivers all of its torque from zero revs, it does manage to feel quickerthan the numbers suggest.

The five-seat interior feels conventional. It's quite roomy up front and there isspace in the back for a couple of adults. But because the battery pack lives betweenthe back seat and the boot, the latter is a bit compromised. Otherwise, the onlyreal clue that you're in a pure-electric car is the charge-level indicator whereyou’d normally find a rev counter. There is also a meterthat shows how much energy you’re using at any givenmoment.

And driving the Fluence ZE couldn’t be easier. Turnthe key and the word ‘Go’ appears on the dash. Slotthe automatic shifter into D and off you go. It reallyis that simple – once you're underway, the only cluethat the Renault is electric is the eerie absence ofnoise at lower speeds and the seamless accelera-tion, unbroken by the usual gearshift jerks.

The Fluence ZE is billed as being quite good fun to drive on twisting roads, too. The ride quality, while firm, is not uncomfortable.

And now, the thing that everybody wants to know about – range. Renault says that theFluence ZE can go 115 miles on a charge but drive aggressively, as Clarkson might like to, andthat could fall to 50 or 60 miles.

Renault is also attempting to address the battery life issue. When you buy the ZE, you ownthe car but only lease the battery. That means Renault sorts any problems that might ariseand guarantees that the battery in your car will never have less than 75% of its originalefficiency. There's a wide range of battery hire options with Renault.

Renault Ireland says they'll sell the ZE without battery, taking into account current tax rebatesfor Electric Vehicles, for €21,620. For the battery, they'll charge €79+VAT on a monthlylease, or €1,147 annually to a private buyer not registered for VAT.

Electric 'fuel' costs can be estimated at around €200 a year. Road Tax at the moment is €104,the same as for the diesel Fluence.

I'm pretty sure that the Fluence ZE wouldn’t convert Clarkson, but it could win over a greatmany others.

Job levels at Enterprise Irelandfirms stabiliseAt the launch of its annual report, Enterprise Ireland said employment levels in its clientcompanies stabilised last year. The State agency supports Irish-owned companies, asopposed to IDA Ireland, which helps foreign-owned groups.

Full-time employment in the firms it supports stood at 141,228 by the end of the year.Just over 9,000 jobs were created in 2011, while job losses were the lowest recordedin recent years. The report reveals that Enterprise Ireland supported 93 new high-potential start-ups during the year and approved €20.4m in funding, while therewere 19 follow-on investments in high-potential start-ups worth €3m.

During the year, 484 companies took part in 42 trade fairs and missions, EnterpriseIreland added while on research and development 743 client companies engaged insignificant R&D projects, spending over €100,000 a year.

The Technology Centre programme, which EI runs with IDA Ireland, was also expandedduring the year with the launch of manufacturing and energy efficiency technologycentres.

“The performance of Ireland’s exporting sector in overseas markets in 2011 wasremarkable in any context, but particularly against the backdrop of a global economicsituation,” said Enterprise Ireland’s Chief Executive Frank Ryan.

The impact of this on the Irish economy is enormous, Mr Ryan added. "These companiesare responsible for the direct and indirect employment of more than 300,000 peoplein every town and village in Ireland, he said. "Indigenous exporters also spent €18.3bnon goods and services in the Irish economy in 2011."

Mac Users Pay More For Hotels On Travel SiteResearch by Orbitz found that fans of Apple equipment werelikely to outlay 30 per cent extra on hotel rooms, anddeveloped the algorithm to list different and costlier hotelsand room tariffs it has been confirmed

According to the Wall Street Journal, the system is part of awider data mining project of online usage of seeminglyinnocuous information to help predict spending habits andtastes.

It said the system has evolved since boss Barney Harford, aformer Expedia executive, headhunted statisticians from eBayand Google to create a new analytics team. The team alsodiscovered some innovative and design-led hotels were farmore likely to be booked by Mac users than those onMicrosoft’s Windows systems.

"We had the intuition, and we were able to confirm it basedon the data," Orbitz Chief Technology Officer Roger Liew said.He added that some other factors have been identified ininfluencing choices, including user location and previous sitehistory, along with promotions and hotel popularity. Appleusers are known as being keen on design and are willing topay extra for innovative technology, such as with thepremium-priced iPad tablets.

According to consumer research by Bizrate Insights, manytablet owners spend 28 per cent more than non-tablet usersand their average household income is 55 per cent higher.

Bank of Irelandhas reduced itsloan book by€10 billionThe target was laid down by the CentralBank in last year's stress tests.

The bank recently announced that it hasagreed to sell a €270m portfolio of UK loansto Danish pension fund PensionDanmark.

That sale brings the total loan sales to€10bn and the bank says that the loanshave been achieved at an average discountof 7.9 per cent.

The sales have reduced the bank's wholesalefunding requirements and have had apositive impact on the bank's core Tier 1 ratiowhich is the its buffer against futurepotential losses.

The Tier 1 ratio increase is taken as anindication that the sales have provided areasonable return, rather than a fire sale.

On that basis it hopes to reduce its loan bookfrom €114 billion to about €90 billion byDecember 2013.

Foxconn could be preparing for Apple’s TVBarely a week goes by without another rumor about Apple's bid to reinvent the TV and this time it's a biggie:Hon Hai (Foxconn's parent company) has already invested in Sharp's LCD plant, and now it's seemingly movingdelivery of large numbers of big flat-panel LCDs to the third quarter of 2012 instead of the fourth quarter, as hadbeen previously rumoured.

If you believe Apple is making a TV, and if you believe that Foxconn and Sharp are intimately involved in the plan, then this seems to suggest the device is in late-stage prototyping and may even arrive late in 2012 to soak upsales in the holiday season.

Soft cushioned clouds whisp by.Silent I gaze, knowing that past this wondrous blue liningLies the sun, moon and stars.A magical place - untouchable.

I can only dream of its beautyI fantasise...reaching upwards fingers stretchedI feel the sun on my faceLong grass touching my bare legs

“The Daydreamer” isa strange kind of book. Despite my earlier protestations that I don’t tend to readbooks of short stories, I find myself with another one foryou this edition. Regular readers of my column will knowthat I love Ian McEwan. In fact, he holds joint first placefor the heady title of my favourite author alongside IainBanks of The Wasp Factory fame.

I had never heard of “The Daydreamer”before I happenedacross a copy a few weekends ago. It was first publishedin 1995 and has not garnered the same amount of criticalacclaim as some of his other titles.

I say it’s a strange kind of book because it is a childrens’book written by an author that usually writes for adults. McEwan says that he wanted ‘to write a book for adultsabout a child in a language that children could under-stand. ‘ The result is a charmingly innocent set of storiesabout a little boy called Peter.

In these seven exquisitely interlinked episodes, thegrown-up protagonist Peter Fortune reveals the secretjourneys, metamorphosis, and adventures of his child-hood.

McEwan has said that when writing a book for children,he was striving for “a good tale above all, a sympathetichero, villians yes - but not all the time because they aretoo simplifying - clarity in the openings, twists in themiddle, and satisfying outcomes that are not alwayshappy.”

Living somewhere between dream and reality, Peter ex-periences fantastical transformations. He swaps bodieswith the wise old family cat; exchanges existences witha cranky infant; encounters a very bad doll who has cometo life and is out for revenge; and rummages through akitchen drawer filled with useless objects to discoversome not-so-useless cream that actually makes peoplevanish. Finally, he wakes up as an eleven-year-old insidea grown-up body and embarks on the truly fantastic adventure of falling in love.

“I hoped the subject matter–the imagination itself–wasone in which anyone who picks up a book has a stake.Similarly, transformation has been a theme, almost anobsession, in all literatures,” he has said.

These kind of grand themes certainly draw the readerthough the words he uses are a little simpler, and thegeneral plot easy enough for a child to follow, his finelyhoned writing skills still shine though. One wonders if

little Ian was as prone to daydreaming as Peter. It is

written from the persepective of an adult looking backon the events of his childhood but does not lose the airof possibility and adventure that, that child would havefelt.

In the preface, McEwan asks if we adults really mean itwhen we say we like children’s literature or are we merely“speaking up for, and keeping the lines open to, our lost, nearly forgotten selves?” I think I probably would haveenjoyed this when I was younger and reading it now, Ienjoyed the innocence and magic so often missing fromfiction written purely for adults. It’s an interestingexperiment and one I think is worth a read.

About The AuthorMcEwan's works have earned him worldwide criticalacclaim. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prizefor Fiction numerous times, winning the award forAmsterdam in 1998. His novel Atonement won severalawards and was also made into a film starring KeiraKnightley and James McAvoy. McEwan lives in Londonand is currently writing a new novel.

How do you match a concealerto your shade of foundation?Cara Smith, Tallaght

Hi Cara, the first thing before you try and match your concealer with your foundationis to ask yourself , where do I want to use the concealer, under the eyes or to coverblemishes? Once you have answered this question you can start looking at colour.

So how does colour work? Well if you want a concealer for under the eye area andyou have dark circles that need covering you want to go for a concealer that is oneshade lighter or the same colour code as your foundation but one which has a morepink or warm tone in it. Eg studio fix fluid NC 20 foundation and select cover NW 20.

For blemishes, as most of them are red, this is where you want to chose a concealerwith a yellow tone base but keep this concealer at the same colour as your foun-dation eg Studio fix fluid NC20 and select cover NC20. The bad new is if you reallywant to cover dark circles and blemishes you really should buy two different con-cealers but if your dark circles aren't too bad try and stick with the yellow tone baseconcealer. Oh and apply it after your foundation as you will get better coverage.

I sometimes get tiny dry patches onmy skin which my makeup clumpsover. What's the best way to hydrate my skin and avoid this?Emily Rowland, Knocklyon

Hi Emily, many people have this problem. Dry flaky patches are a sign of dryness in the skinnot dehydration. So what I would advise you is to invest in is a gentle exfoliating facial scrubto use twice a week or follow the instructions on the product. This will remove any dead skinand help to promote new skin generation.

Next you need to get the oil back into your skin - this can be done by using a mask once ortwice a week, a serum which goes under your moisturiser and also the choice of your foun-dation can make a real difference in the appearance of your makeup. So my best advice is toget your skin healthy and then your foundation will look flawless.

Lawn care in your gardenA good lawn takes years to establish, and will take morethan cutting the grass on a regular basis. To keep yourlawn healthy and looking its best, yearly maintenancewill require fertilising, topdressing, aerating, moss controland weeding.

One thing to remember about mowing and lawn care isthat this stimulates growth. The more you cut it, the moreyour lawn will grow. Little and often is a good way oftackling mowing your lawn. A good rule to follow is, re-move no more than a third of the length of the grassblade each time. If the weather is dry, mow high, but lessoften, any branches or bushes which shadow the lawnshould be cut back where possible, helping to ensure ad-equate light reaches the grass.

Help eliminating pestsIn a jar, put one teaspoon of washing up liquid and onecup of vegetable oil. Shake well. In an empty spray bottle, put two teaspoons of this mixture and one cup of water.Spray every week to 10 days or more often if needed tohelp rid plants of mites, whiteflies, scales, aphids andother pests.

FertilizersUsing compost fertilizers is a great way to help keephealthy plants. It is also an economical way to save onexpensive bought fertilizers. Non-organic fertilizers tendto leave chemical residues that can build up in gardensoils and harm not only the plants but wildlife as well. They can cause pollutants to get into the water supply.Garden worms are important to plants, they till and aer-ate the soil for the roots to breathe. Non-organic fertilizerscan kill them.

FeedingThere is always a temptation to overfeed our gardensbut this just results in lush sappy growth that is vulner-able to pests and diseases. So why waste money on un-necessary fertilizers? Instead, follow these guidelines toget the best results:

Plants in pots, containers and hanging baskets will sufferif you don’t supplement the nutrients in the compostthroughout the growing season. Either incorporate a

slow release fertilizer at planting time or use a water sol-uble feed every week to ten days through the summer. Use a high nitrogen feed, such as Miracle Grow, until mid-summer, then switch to a high potassium feed, such asone of the liquid tomato feeds.

Plants for shade or sunIf you have a shady area in your garden, consider plant-ing, Phlox, Impatiens, Ferns, Hostas and African violets. These fabulous plants will grow very well in darker spacesand are very easy to grow for inexperienced gardeners.

For flowers in a sunny area, some of the easiest flowersto grow are the Black Eye Susan, Marigolds, Sunflowers,Petunias, Begonias and Coreopsis and many more. All ofthese flowers are great for beginners and will grow allsummer long in sunny garden areas.

WateringDon’t neglect your watering duties, especially if the veryhot weather sets in. If you don’t water enough, roots willstay near the surface, making them even more suscep-tible to the heat. An inch of water a week is a good ruleof thumb. Always water early in the morning so that fo-liage has time to dry during the day, which helps preventfungal infections.

You should try to have some good beneficial insects inyour garden. Not all insects are bad. Butterflies, Bees, Hov-erflies and Beetles are critical to flower gardens to helpwith pollination. Your flowers will not do very well with-out being pollinated.

Ladybirds, Dragonflies as well as some other insects helpeliminate harmful insects. These insects prey upon otherbugs like Aphids, which can be hard to get rid of. You needto encourage beneficial insects to visit your garden andstay there. You can do this by trying to include many dif-ferent kinds of plants and shrubs in your garden includingevergreens, fruit trees, old fashioned cottage gardenplants, annuals and wildflowers.

If you can find room for a native tree, this would be anadvantage, maybe a Holly, Rowan or Birch would be okin a small garden, or if you have a bigger garden youcould consider a Larch, Ash or Willow.

It also helps to adopt a more relaxed approach to gar-dening, avoiding chemical sprays and slug pellets, to en-courage smaller creatures and insects which will be foodfor birds.

DiseasesOne of the more common fungi that I get asked about alot is powdery mildew. This appears as a white film onthe leaves of ornamental plants. Dogwoods and PurpleSand Cherry can often be the victims of Powdery Mildewwhich isn’t particularly harmful to the plants, it's just thatthe foliage gets damaged and little growing takes placeonce it sets in. Your local garden centre will have a generalfungicide you can spray if you’d like to try and control it.

Dead-headingI listed dead-heading as a spring chore, but you shouldcontinue to dead-head flowers that have passedthroughout the summer (this increases bloom time andstrengthens the plant). Pay special attention to dead-heading flowers that self-seed once they have passed sothat you maintain control over where they spread in yourgarden. If you want to propagate certain plants, you cansave the flower heads for planting at a later date.

There are plenty of reasons why you shouldexercise while pregnant such as helping toprevent back pain, easier labour and reducing therisk of postpartum depression. Another benefitcould be to reduce excessive weight gain andchoosing the right type of exercise can be a trickyone but really it’s simple! Here are some tips toguid you along the way...

Avoid high risk activities: Keep it simple don’t put youor your baby at risk from any high risk activities. Contactsports such as downhill skiing wouldn’t be a good idea.Alternatively take a simple 20 min walk or swim.

Don’t start something new: If you’re not currently agym goer or regularly exerciser don’t jump into exercisingjust because you’re pregnant but similarly if you are a reg-ularly active and become pregnant, once cleared by yourGP, it’s ok to continue. In any case keep it simple when itcomes to introducing exercise during pregnancy.

Perform Kegel exercise: Common problems duringpregnancy such as haemorrhoids and bladder issues maybe helped by kegel exercise. Traditional abdominal exer-cises that flex the spine ie. sit ups, are not recommended.

Listen to your body: ‘No pain, no gain’ may be well

intended but most definitely doesn’t apply when you’repregnant. Warning signs during exercise such as dizziness, abdominal or vaginal bleeding or anything out of theordinary and you should seek medical attentionimmediately.

Stay hydrated and keep cool: Keeping hydrated is superimportant for all of us but especially during pregnancy, before, during and after any activity. Body temperature isalso well worth monitoring as appropriate exerciseshouldn’t have you over heating OR sweating.

Types of exercise: Yoga is a fantastic choice duringpregnancy as its gentle postures helps reduce back painwhile keeping your baby happy as you’re working on yourbreathing exercises. It’s very low risk and extremely ben-eficial. Add in some walking/swimming and you’re readyto go. Post pregnancy is even more important in terms ofgetting you back on track. Check out your local Fitmumclasses which are a specific exercise class for mothers withthe added benefit of bringing your baby.

Remember keep it simple and always listen to your body,

NOTE: this article is not aimed at providing medical adviceso please consult your GP before commencing any exer-cise...

Gary Twigg continues to be Shamrock Rovers’ lethal striking weapon.Since the Scotsman, joined the Hoops back in 2009 he hasn’t stoppedscoring. On his competitive home debut he scored his first Rovers goalwhich also happened to be the first goal ever scored in Tallaght Stadium.

The man from Glasgow, who is a big fan of the Scottish team, which also plays ingreen and white like the hoops, has been top scorer for Rovers every season he hasplayed for the club. He currently leads the way again this season with 15 leaguegoals (and he has also scored two goals in the Setanta Sports Cup). It is no surpriseto see that he is also the leading goalscorer in the Airtricity League. His goal tally isall the more impressive due to the fact he is not the regular penalty taker for Rovers.

Coming into July, Twigg has made 77 league appearances for Rovers in his careerand has scored 74 goals to date, which is an incredible achievement. The 28year-old’s contract is up at the end of this season and all Rovers fans will be hopingthat Twigg signs a contract extension. If he does then the all-time Shamrock Roversleague goalscoring record could well be his. Paddy Ambrose’s 109 goals is the target to beat. Twigg is currently eigth on the list of league goalscorers at Roverswith Mick Leech just above him on that list with 84 goals. Twigg is a player wholoves to score goals and loves to play for the Hoops. Here’s hoping he continues todo both for Rovers for many years to come.

Ireland’s early elimination from UEFA EURO 2012 was a majordisappointment but for Shamrock Rovers fans the more crucial Europeanfootball engagement is the League of Ireland champions entry into theChampions League. In the second qualifying round draw, Rovers avoidedthe potential long trip to Belarus to face Bate Borisov and also avoidedbeing drawn against FC Basle which was another team like Bate in theRovers section of the draw who played in the 2011 Champions Leaguegroup stages. Instead, Rovers are heading back to the Baltics where theyplayed last year at this stage of the competition. Back then it was a tripfrom Tallaght to Tallinn in Estonia but in 2012 Rovers will travel to faceLithuanian Champions FK Ekranas Panevezys.

European football will be a nice distraction for Rovers who went into the start of themonth having slipped to fourth in the Airtricity League table. During the mid-seasonbreak, Monaghan United pulled out of the league. The expunging of Monaghan’sresults effectively helped Rovers as the Hoops had dropped two points againstMonaghan in Gortakeegan towards the end of May. With one eye on Europe duringthe mid-season League break, Rovers played Swedish side Malmo in Tallaght. GaryTwigg scored the Rovers goal in a 2-1 friendly defeat.

On the return to competitive action in the League, Rovers won a highly entertaininggame in Tolka Park where they came from behind twice to beat Shelbourne 3-2.Rovers had fallen behind to an early Shelbourne goal before Twigg equalised. PhillyHughes then put Shels back into the lead on a very wet night in Drumcondra butthen Gary McCabe and Twigg again scored to give Rovers all three points.

Shamrock Rovers made it a hat-trick of penalty shoot out wins from three differentcup competitions this season when they eliminated Saint Patrick’s Athletic in thequarter final of the EA Sports Cup.

The teams were deadlocked in Richmond Park after both 90 and 120 minutesfollowing first half goals from Killian Brennan for Rovers and Sean O’Connor for thehome team.

While Oscar Jansson had been in goal for Rovers’ other shoot out wins (againstCliftonville in the Setanta Sports Cup and Saint Patrick’s Athletic in the Leinster SeniorCup), this time it was Reyaad Pieterse in goal for the Hoops for the shoot out. Theyoung South African goalkeeper was the hero as he saved two penalties setting upConor McCormack to score the winning spot kick as Rovers progressed 4-2 onpenalties. Rovers will know who they will face in the semi-final when the draw ismade on July 9. Limerick, Drogheda United and Sligo Rovers are the other teamsthat will be in that semi-final draw.

Against Bohemians in Dalymount Park at the end of June, Rovers suffered a heavydefeat. Rovers’ three losses in the league have all come away from home and havenot been close affairs. Pats beat Rovers 5-1 and Sligo beat the Hoops 3-0 earlier inthe season. However, Rovers bounced straight back from those defeats with wins intheir next league game. Rovers will be hoping for another return to winning waysafter that defeat to Bohs and that opportunity will come on Sunday, July 8, whenthey face St Patrick’s Athletic.
