The Thermafiber® DifferenceWhile most other insulating products can
help control temperature and muffle sound,
few have the ability to handle high heat
exposure or stop the spread of fire like
Thermafiber® Mineral Wool Insulation.
That’s because Thermafiber Mineral
Wool Insulation is Born in Fire™. The raw
material for Thermafiber insulation is
primarily blast furnace slag, a byproduct of
steel manufacturing. Heated in a cupola
furnace at temperatures above 2,600ºF, the
molten substance is spun into fibers, then
formed into insulation blankets or other
forms of insulation products, such as
boards or granules of various sizes.
Because mineral wool requires so much
heat in its formation, it also resists an enor-
mous amount of heat in use. While cellulose
insulation smolders at 450ºF and glass fiber
melts at 1,050ºF, Thermafiber Mineral Wool
Insulation consistently withstands tempera-
tures above 2,000ºF for more than 5 hours
without failure. (See graph)
The ability to withstand high tempera-
tures does not seem like much until it is
translated into time – the additional time it
will take a fire to burn through a wall
assembly, or the additional time it allows
people to leave a building, or the additional
time it allows for first responders to strike a
blaze before lives are lost and property is
damaged.
Born in Fire means that Thermafiber
insulation is denser than other insulations,
giving it the ability to attenuate sound as
well as absorb it. It means that Thermafiber
insulation is more rigid than others, so that
you can count on its thermal performance
over a long period of time. And it means that
Thermafiber mineral wool can be used
successfully under extreme conditions for
friction products and as fiber reinforcement
additives in caulks, coatings, and a number
of other end uses, including horticulture,
asphalt and clay tile.Thermafiber insulations meet several
category requirements under the LEEDprogram, thereby contributing to greenbuilding and sustainable design construction.

Life SafetyOur first priority is to safeguardthe lives of building occupantsfrom the hazards of fire andsmoke. The best way toaccomplish that is to contain
fire and smoke to the area of origin, providing time for occupants to get outand time for firefighters to extinguish theblaze.
Thermafiber’s Life Safety InsulationSystems play a prominent role incontaining fire and protecting lives andproperty.
Perimeter Fire ContainmentIn high-rise buildings, exterior walls with visionglass become points of failure for fire contain-ment. Often, there are several inches of spacebetween the slab edge and the curtain wallassembly.Effective perimeter fire containmentrequires that all routes of fire propagation– through penetrations in floor slabs, through voids between floor slab andcurtain wall, and around spandrel panelsand back in – be shut down at the sametime. To do so, Thermafiber’s engineerscombined three types of materials –FIRESPAN curtain wall spandrel insulation, safing insulation and a smoke sealant –into a system that prohibits such fire prop-agation.
Curtain Wall Insulation TypesCurtain wall insulation protects all structuralcomponents of curtain wall assemblies, and elimi-nates the opportunity for fire to travel through thecurtain wall cavity to the floor above. All of Thermafiber’s curtain wall insulationproducts are available in a choice of threefinishes. The standard finish for curtainwall insulation is unfaced material, off-yellow in color, that is commonly usedbehind opaque panels where no vapor
retarder is needed. Dark finish curtain wallinsulation is similar to standard finish, except that it is darker in color for usebehind darker colored (perhaps translu-cent) panels to improve overall panelappearance. FSP finish is curtain wallinsulation faced with a foil scrim polyeth-ylene vapor retarder added on either oneside or two, which also improves durabilityfor field installation and stops smokepassage in the event of fire.
FIRESPAN® Curtain Wall Insulation andFIRESPAN® SS Curtain Wall Insulation areour finest curtain wall insulation products. They have been tested and approved byUnderwriters Laboratories and OmegaPoint Laboratories in many design as-semblies. Architects, building designersand general contractors will find those
system designs easily in current UL orOPL fire-resistance directories, on theirwebsites, or on our website, www.ther-mafiber.com.
FIRESPAN Insulation is the premierproduct with high density and improvedthermal conductivity properties, enablingit to do the best possible job of divertingheat away from the components it isdesigned to protect. Also, its compactnessmakes shrinkage and flame propagationless likely. FIRESPAN is available in thick-nesses from 1” to 6” in 1/2” increments.
FIRESPAN SS is less dense, but hasproved its ability to meet protectionrequirements for a broad range of steel-stud and aluminum-framed assembliesand a variety of aluminum, glass andgranite spandrels that often are designedto accommodate greater insulation thick-ness. FIRESPAN SS ranges in thicknessfrom 2” to 6“ in 1/2” increments.
FIRESPAN has demonstrated superiorperformance in recent tests. The product isapproved and listed in the fire resistance
directories of both ULa n dOPL.
IMPASSE™ Curtain Wall InsulationSystem (recently introduced) usesFireSpan Insulation, and is the finest, easiest and most effective Curtain WallProtection System available. IMPASSE
streamlines installa-tion by changing the order of steps to fit a more logi-cal progression.Instead of firstinstalling impalingpins on frames,IMPASSE uses blade-like insulation sup-port hangers (patent pending) that areinserted into pre-cut FireSpan® insulationblankets before attachment.
This order makes it easier for installersto position the insulation properly. Thehangers are then screw attached to theframing after the blanket is properly posi-tioned. Screws used for attachment arecovered by another layer of FireSpan insu-lation to assure system integrity.
The UL tested and approved systemalso uniquely overlaps, or interlocks, curtain wall and safing insulation in afashion that enhances performance.Ratings up to three hours are achievablewith this system. For more information, visit www.thermafiber.com.
Safing InsulationSafing insulation is used to fill the void betweenthe floor slab edge and the insulated curtain wallcomponents. Standard Thermafiber SafingInsulation is available in 4” thick batts, either unfaced or foil faced. While theunfaced insula-tion does anexcellent job ofinhibiting fire, thefoil-faced insula-tion also has theability to stopsmoke. Foil-facedSafing serves as a vapor retarder andhelps to stop the spread of smoke in theevent of fire. Safing also is used as aforming material in firestop applications, for poke-through openings in floors, wallsand construction joints.

Partition Wall ContainmentOne part of the containment problem is the lateralspread of fire from room to room on the same floorthrough partition walls. While gypsum wall-board alone provides some fire-contain-ment capacity, insulating partition wallstud cavities with Thermafiber SoundAttenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB) adds fireprotection, and boosts the sound attenua-tion performance of the wall.
Floor/Ceiling ContainmentAn even greater part of the containment problemis containment of fire and smoke at thefloor/ceiling assembly. Heat rises, so anycombustibles that are above the initialflames are prime targets for ignition.Floor-to-floor fire protection can be aidedby installing either Thermafiber SAFB,Thermafiber FS-15 or FS-25 CommercialBlankets between joists in the floor-ceilingassembly.
Any opening in the floor/ceilingassembly can act as a flue or chimney asheated air tries to escape. In high-risebuildings with thick concrete floor slabs, pipe, conduit and duct penetrationsthrough the floor slab must be packed withThermafiber Safing Insulation and sealedwith a recommended smoke sealant (byothers) for inhibiting fire and smoke.
Sound InsulationSAFB & Creased SAFB
Thermafiber Sound AttenuationFire Blankets (SAFB) help makerooms quieter by reducing soundtransmission from room to roomand floor to floor. Made with
nominal 2.5 pcf density mineral wool, (4pcf for 1”) these blankets trap soundwithin wall cavities or floor/ceiling assem-blies.
Effectiveness of Thermafiber SAFB incontrolling sound is well documented. Forexample, a typical partition wall built withwood studs 24” o.c. and 5/8” gypsum
wallboard, nail attachedon both sides, producedan STC rating of 37,while the same assemblywith 3” Thermafiber
SAFB installed in the cavity produced anSTC rating of 46. Some assemblies haveshown as much as 11 points differencewhen Thermafiber SAFB is added.Thermafiber SAFB’s performance is evenmore impressive in certain frequencyranges, especially for speech, machinery, mechanical equipment and music.
Creased Thermafiber SAFBOur Creased Thermafiber SAFB system is a method ofachieving economical wallboard and veneer plasterpartitions with as much as 50 to 55 STC. TheCreased Thermafiber System uses blan-kets that are 1” wider than standard blan-
kets to produce a tighterstud-to-stud fit. A field-cut crease down themiddle of the blanketintroduces pressureagainst the wallboard oneither side of the
assembly, dampening sound vibration andboosting STC. In some cases, the boost insound attenuation has been equivalent tothe addition of another layer of wallboardon one side of the assembly.
SoundZero® Fabric-backed InteriorAcoustical Blanket

Thermal InsulationKeeping people warmer in winter, cooler in summer. That’s what mostpeople regard as the primarypurpose of any insulation product. And, indeed, Thermafiber’s
performance in that role is unsurpassed.Compare Thermafiber Mineral WoolInsulation products to other types of insu-lation, such as cellulose, foam boards, orglass fiber, and Thermafiber Insulation
comes out on top in virtually every criticalcategory.
Commercial BlanketsThermafiber FS-15 and FS-25 Commercial Blanketsare ideal for reducing heat transmission, savingenergy and improving the comfort of buildingoccupants. Both are available in 16” and 24”widths for steel stud construction or 15”and 23” for wood framing, and are avail-able in a variety of thicknesses.
Thermafiber FS-15 blankets areunfaced anddesigned for useon exterior walla s s e m b l i e sframed in steel orwood, or Z-furred. 1”-thickblankets have adensity of 4-pcf.T h i c k n e s s e s
ranging from 1-1/2” to 6” are 3.0 pcfnominal. Flame spread 0, smoke devel-oped 0.
Thermafiber FS-25 blankets are foilfaced, with an FSP vapor retarder, and aredesigned for use in floor/ceilings, walls, crawl spaces, and are especially wellsuited for exposed-insulation and vapor-control insulation applications. Blanketsare nominal 3.0 pcf density across theentire 3” to 6” thickness range. Flamespread 25, smoke developed 0.
The high density of Thermafiber FS-15and FS-25 Commercial Blankets enhancesthe ability of these products to attenuatesound and impair fire, in addition to theirexcellent thermal retention properties.
