FLASHFlash StrengthThe flash on the IS-2 employs a new exposurecontrol system that combines the advantages ofboth "flashmatic," used in compact cameras, and"auto flash", found in SLR cameras. Flashmaticemits a full-strength flash while automaticallyadjusting the aperture for proper exposure. Thissystem is effective in most cases. However, subjectsat extremely close range tend to be overexposed, and the background too dark, because thenarrowest aperture setting has been selected. Autoflash varies the amount of light emitted by the flash, and sets the exposure by measuring reflected light.Depending on the background however, the wrongexposure for the main subject can be selected. Forexample, with a white background, the subject mayappear too dark due to the level of reflected lightreceived through the lens. The reverse is true for adark background.

The IS-2 adjusts both the aperture and flashstrength to give you perfect exposure every time, taking into account the effect of the backgroundlight and the distance to the subject.

Dual-Strobe Intelligent FlashThe flash of the IS-2 is distinguished by twoemission tubes. One of the most important functionsof a flash is to distribute light evenly throughout theframe. When a zoom lens is used, the area that canbe lit by a single flash is determined by the wide-angle focal length. When telephoto is used, the lightis wasted because the light is spread over a widearea. If this wasted light is concentrated on thepicture area however, the working distance of the

flash will be increased. Solving this problem iscrucial to effective telephoto-flash photography.

The zoom flash system found in some cameras isone solution to this problem. With this system, thedistance between the xenon tube — which is theemission source of the flash — and the reflectivematerial behind it is varied according to the focallength of the lens. When telephoto is used, the lightfrom the flash is condensed more intensely. (Thedistance between the xenon tube and thecondenser lens can be varied for the same result.)

So why does the IS-2 incorporate the dual-strobesystem? Because the dual-strobe system can utilizethe light more effectively while achieving moreuniform lighting than the zoom flash system iscapable of. The zoom flash system also cannot alterthe actual shapes of the reflector and the condenserlens. In practice, these two factors greatly affect theeven distribution and condensing intensity of lightfrom the flash. The zoom flash sacrifices theeffective use of the light's intensity for evendistribution. To achieve both optimal condensingintensity and even distribution, Olympus developedthe dual-strobe flash system with two sets of tubesand a reflective backing that are ideal for both wide-angle and telephoto photography. This makes apowerful, versatile flash with GN 20 (ISO 100 • m) /GN 66(ISO 100 • ft) possible. The lower tube is designed for telephoto

photography and offers GN 20 (ISO 100 • m) / GN 66(ISO 100 • ft). The upper tube is an intelligentvariable-power flash offering GN 15~1.6 (IS0 100 • m) /GN 50~5.3 (IS0 100 • ft). When the flash strengthshould be less than GN 15 (ISO 100 •m)/GN5052

(ISO 100 • ft) in order to obtain natural-lookingresults, even if the lens is set at telephoto, the upperflash will automatically fire.

Even during macro photography, the flash lightwon't be obstructed by the tip of the lens since theintelligent variable-power flash is placed up and tothe side of the camera. The flash is also capable ofemitting minimal intensity for ideal macrophotography.Auto-S FlashThe Auto-S Flash mode includes a series of pre-flashes that reduces the phenomenon of red-eye, inaddition to the same functions as the Auto Flashmode which prevent camera-shake and insufficientlighting by automatically firing in dimly lit and darkconditions when the flash is flipped up. Thephenomenon of red-eye is when subject's eyesappear red in printed photographs. In this mode, thecamera will start emitting approximately 20 low-power pre-flashes about a second before theregular flash.

This contracts pupils, which are wide open in thedark, significantly reducing red-eye. The pre-flashesdo not decrease the power of the main flash. Inaddition, the red-eye reducing effect variesaccording to shooting conditions.Fill-in FlashFill-in refers to the auxiliary light that "fills in" areas ofthe subject shadowed by the main light source.Even when the subject is backlit, the IS-2 can shootit at the correct exposure using ESP metering orspot metering, however this may wash out thebackground. This happens because the differencein brightness between that of the subject and thebackground is too great. When the Fill-In Flash isused in such a cases, the subject is lit brightly bythe flash. This minimizes the difference in brightness

between the subject and the background, allowingboth to be shot clearly. This light is also reflectedfrom the subject's eyes (catch light effect), makingthe picture lively.

In this mode, the flash fires no matter what light isavailable as long as the flash is flipped up. (Flashemission in well-lit conditions is called daylightsynchro.)Electronic Flash G40 (Optional)The G40 is a dedicated flash for the IS-2 (GN 40,ISO 100 • m / GN 131, ISO 100 • ft). It is designedfor professional flash photo-effects such as Bounce,Multi-Flash, and Follow-Synchro.

Bounce photography uses indirect lighting ofsubjects by reflecting the flash off the ceiling or wall. With straight flash photography a strong shadowoften appears behind the subject. By bouncing theflash, you can obtain soft, well -balanced lighting ofthe entire subject. You can also use the built-in flashtogether with the G40 for additional affects.

Multi-flash emits the light several times in oneexposure. With this flash mode, continuousmovement, such as a golf swing, can bephotographed sequentially in one frame. It's amultiple exposure with flash.

With Follow-Synchro mode, the flash fires at the finalpoint of slow-synchro. For example, the tail-lights of amoving automobile can be captured on film.

When the IS-2 is equipped with the tele-converterlens (1.5X) or the wide-converter (0.8X), the built-inflash cannot be used. We recommend you use theG40 for such cases.

Note: In the Super Macro and 1:1 Macro modes, theElectronic Flash G40 does not fire except in theManual Exposure mode.

EFFECTS OF ZOOM AND ITS ADVANTAGESIn a zoom lens, the focal length is changed bymoving part of the lens. In the case of the IS-2, anyfocal length between 35 mm and 135 mm can beselected.•35 mm wide-angleBecause the angle of view is wide and the depth offield is large, sharp photographs with enhancedperspective and contrast can be taken.• 70 mmWith the lens zoomed to 70 mm, subjects appeartwo times closer than when the lens is positioned at35 mm.

• 100 mm or moreWhen the lens is set to the maximum focal length of135 mm, magnification is approximately four timesgreater than at 35 mm, for genuine telephotophotography. As the telephoto power is increased, the perspective narrows and the depth of fieldbecomes more shallow. The result is that objects infront of and behind your subject are more likely tobe out of focus. This can be used to interestingeffect on snapshots and portraits.Maximum telephoto lengths are particularly usefulfor taking pictures at sporting events and for naturephotography, when you want to get closer to yoursubject without disturbing it.

The three pictureson the right were taken without changing the subject's size. Notice howthe background and foreground tend to blur at increased focal lengths.• Be sure to hold the camera firmly, as pictures tend to blur more easilyat longer focal lengths.Angle of view and depth of fieldAngle of view is directly related to the focal depth of field (the distance infront of and behind the subject that the camera is able to bring into focus). The greater the angle of view (wide angle), the greater the depth of field. When the angle of view is narrow (telephoto), the depth of fielddecreases.•The use of a converter lens (optional)It is possible to attach a converter lens for an even wider angle of view,or for additional telephoto power.• Instead of 35 mm, a wide-angle converter (0.8X) enables you reduce thecamera's focal length to 28 mm.

• Instead of 135 mm, a telephoto converter (1.5X) enables you to increasethe camera's focal length to 200 mm.

EXPOSUREAutomatic Exposure Mode

Exposure refers to the amount of light which strikesthe film, and is controlled by a combination ofaperture size and shutter speed. The correctamount of light, called correct exposure, dependson the film speed (indicated on the film package,e.g. ISO 100 or ISO 200)The automatic exposure function automatically setsthe correct exposure. The IS-2 employs two typesof automatic exposure modes: (1) programmedauto exposure, and (2) aperture-preferred autoexposure. With programmed auto exposure, the cameraautomatically selects the most suitable combinationof F stop and shutter speed for the existing lightingconditions. This lets you concentrate on composingyour shot and releasing the shutter at just the righttime. With aperture-preferred auto, you select the desiredF stop, and the camera automatically selects thecorrect shutter speed. Aperture-preferred autoallows greater manual control for more artisticfreedom of expression and creativity.

Program Chart (Standard Photography Mode)Following program chart is for 35mm wide-angleand 135mm telephoto focal lengths. According tothe focal length, the camera's program itselfchanges. When the subject is brightly lit, the F stopand shutter speed changes simultaneously. Whenthe lighting is darker, the aperture opens fully andthe shutter speed changes to match it.In the standard photography mode (refer to p. 12),

if the built-in flash has been flipped up, it willautomatically fire in dark lighting conditions. Theshutter speed will be fixed at 1/100-sec.

Program Chart (Portrait Mode)The chart shown below is a program chart forportrait mode. The shutter speed will automatically be adjusted upto 1/2000-sec. with the aperture fully opened. If thelighting then becomes brighter, the aperture will beadjusted to compensate. This is because with alarger (more open) aperture, the depth of field isreduced. That means that the farther thebackground is, the more out-of-focus it will be. Atthe same time, shutter speed is increased toprevent blurry pictures caused by shaking thecamera.

59

Page 60: INSTRUCTIONS - Olympus Corporation · Full-fledged macro functions include Zoom Macro for subjects as close as 0.6 m (2 ft), Super Macro for subjects as close as 0.39 m (1.3 ft),

Sports ModeThis mode is ideal for capturing high-speed photoopportunities such as sports scenes and children atplay. A fast shutter speed is automatically selectedto "freeze" the action on film. However, the highshutter speed is not the only important feature ofthis mode. To shoot such high-speed action, excellent timing is essential to take the photo at justthe right moment. This mode offers the optimalcombination of continuous shooting and autofocusto maximize your timing for maximum results.

Night Scene ModeWhen shooting night scenes you may sometimesbe disappointed with the result, usually because thecamera's automatic exposure function works on astandard exposure ratio. In such situations aprofessional photographer would adjust forexposure compensation based on long experience,or select the manual shooting mode. The IS-2's night scene mode will automaticallyadjust the exposure compensation for attractivenight scene photography. For example, whenshooting a subject with a night scene as itsbackground, the use of the flash is often desirable.Should that be the case, the camera performs themost suitable exposure compensation for both thesubject and the background. Since the selectedshutter speed may be very slow (up to 4 secondswith ISO 100 or 15 seconds with ISO 25), thecamera should be held firmly in position (with atripod for example) to prevent blurring.

METERING THE AMOUNT OF LIGHTLight Metering

Light metering can measure the brightness of theframed picture in various ways. The IS-2 employsthree metering systems: (1) ESP light metering , (2)center-weighted average light metering, and (3)spot metering. The IS-2 allows you to select thelight metering system most suitable in anyphotographic situation. At the same time, the IS-2 uses TTL (through-the-lens) light metering to automatically measure thelight that enters the lens. This allows you to obtainvery accurate light metering that is not affected bychanges in the distance between the subject andthe camera.

Fuzzy Logic ESP (Electro-Selective Pattern) LightMetering (Exposure Mode P)

ESP light metering measures the brightness of thecentral portion and peripheral portion of the frameseparately in order to determine the properexposure. The calculation program used is basedon programmed data to properly compensate forbacklighting. ESP light metering is usedautomatically when in the P (Program) mode.

Center-Weighted Average Light Metering(Exposure Mode A or M)

Center-weighted average light metering is the mostwidely used light metering system (Fig. A). Thissystem measures the light available throughout theframe with special emphasis on the center of theframe. When in A (Aperture-preferred) or M(Manual) mode, this light metering system is

automatically activated. When the contrastbetween bright and darkareas is not too extremeoutside the center of theframe, this system offersexcellent results.

Spot MeteringSpot metering (Fig. B) measures the brightness atthe center of the frame only. Because this meteringsystem calculates the correct exposure for only onepoint, it is convenient when the subject is backlit orthe picture contains strong contrasts. Whenshooting a subject in front of an extremely brightbackground, you should use spot-metering on thesubject's face. To properly expose white objects, use spot metering and then press the + side of theexposure compensation button. To properly exposeblack objects, use spot metering and then press the- side of the exposure compensation button.Spot metering can beused in any of the P, A orM exposure modes.

EXPOSURECOMPENSATION FILM SPEED

Fixed Proper ExposureProper exposure refers to the balance of light anddark in a photo. When shooting a black and whitewall, the exposure will be based on the averageratio of black and white — thus the overallexposure is set for gray. This is technically called"fixed proper exposure." A good example of this is asubject with a strongly lit background. The reasonthe subject turns out dark is because there is morebrightness than darkness in the frame. Therefore, the fixed proper exposure is based on the total levelof light in the photo, which is significantly brighterthan the subject. In the case of strong backlighting, the exposure needs to be adjusted to compensatefor the excessive brightness.Adjusting the exposure to accommodate lightingconditions is called exposure compensation. WhenESP light metering is used, the cameraautomatically evaluates the lighting situation andcompensates for the proper exposure, so manualexposure compensation is not needed.

Exposure CompensationWith the IS-2, ±4EV exposure compensation in 1/3EV steps is possible. + Compensation will make asubject appear brighter, while - compensation willmake a subject appear darker. Under backlitconditions you'll want to make your subject appearbrighter (+1 to +2EV). For shooting winter snowscenes, you may want adjust the exposure foraddtional definition (+2EV). Or, suppose your pictureis composed of a black wall, (-2EV) compensationwould most likely be appropriate.

Film SpeedFilm speed is indicated on the back of filmpackages. ISO 100, ISO 200, and ISO 400 are themost common. High-speed film (ISO 400), asimplied by its name, is for taking photos of fast-moving subjects in action shots, for example. However, there are also other advantages. Withhigh-speed film, such as ISO 400, it is possible totake pictures in lower light. And the distancecovered by the flash will be greater. With this camera, we recommend the use of "DX"film cartridges: ISO 25, 32, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800,1600, and 3200. In the case of non-DX-coded film, the camera will automatically be set to film speedISO 32. Also, films with intermediate speeds suchas ISO 64, 160, and 1000 are automatically set tothe next lower speed. When using intermediatefilm, use the exposure compensation.

MACRO PHOTOGRAPHYZoom Macro

The IS-2 has an automatic macro function thatenables you to shoot subjects as close as 0.6 m(2 ft) when the focal length is set from 35mm to100mm. The autofocus and built-in flash can alsobe used with this function, which can fill the framewith an area of approx. 15x22 cm (5-7/8x8-11/16in) at a working distance of 0.6m (2 ft) with the focallength set to 100mm. The picture area can beadjusted by changing the focal length and workingdistance. The range in which the zoom macro iseffective is indicated on the lens barrel. So, if youwant to shoot a subject closer than 1.2m (3.9 ft)when the lens is at a telephoto setting greater than100mm, zoom out to a wide-angle setting toposition the lens within the zoom macro range.

Super MacroThe Super Macro mode is ideal when you want tofill the frame with a small subject. In this mode, thefocal length is fixed at 70mm, and shooting ispossible as close as 0.39 m (15-3/8 in) to thesubject. With this function, an area approx. 12 x18 cm (4-3/4 x 7-1/16 in) can fill the entire frame, and the picture can be adjusted by changing thecamera-to-subject distance. The autofocus andbuilt-in flash can be used with this mode. Toprevent blurry pictures caused by shaking thecamera, use of the built-in flash is recommended. The camera can focus as far as infinity in thismode, so you'll never miss a photo opportunity.

SymptomThe subjects' eyesappear red inprinted pictures.

The subject waswithin the frame ofthe viewfinder, butits edges aremissing on the print. The film is scratched

The picture isout of focus.

The picture is toodark.

CauseThis "red-eye phenomenon" occurs withall cameras when a flash is used. It iscaused by light from the flash reflectingoff retina at the back of the eye. Red-eyevaries depending on the individual andthe shooting conditions such as ambientlighting. It is also more likely to occurwhen using 135mm telephoto than whenusing wide-angle focal lengths. When a negative is enlarged, sometimesthe edge of the frame is not printed.

Film particles have accumulated alongthe path that the film follows as it iswound due to extended use of the cameraThe camera moved when the shutterrelease button was pressed.

The viewfinder's autofocus frame wasnot positioned on the subject. The subject was out of the workingrange of the flash. The subject was backlit.

RemedyUse the Auto-S Flash mode to

significantly reduce red-eyephenomenon.

Leave some room on the edges ofthe frame when you composeyour shots.

Clean the inside of the camera.

Hold the camera correctly, andpress the shutter release buttongently.Position the autofocus frame onthe subject, or use the focus lock.Shoot within the working rangeof the flash.Set the flash to Fill-In mode.
