Instructions for Virginia Tech CITI Learners-Responsible Research Conduct

Instructions for Virginia Tech CITI Responsible Conduct of Research participants

Completion Time: The Responsible Conduct of Research course will take approximately 2-3

hours to complete with variation in completion time dependent upon the participant. You are

encouraged to use multiple logon sessions.

If you have been issued a Virginia Tech email address please use it as your primary/preferred

email address when setting up your profile in CITI to ensure proper recording of your training

completion

Please note that this course is separate from the Conflict of Interest CITI course that is

required for investigators; individuals responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of

research.

The minimum "passing" aggregate score for the Responsible Research Conduct module is

80%. A running tally is compiled in the Grade Book. If you want to improve a score on a

quiz, you may repeat any quiz in which you didn't score 100 % correct.

All VT employees and students must log in via SSO and should use the instructions that begin

on page 2.

VT employee/student login instructions:

To Start the Course:

Step 1: Go to www.citiprogram.org. If you are a VT employee or student, go to the section “Log

in through my institution” and click on “Log in via SSO”. If you are not an employee or student,

select create an account and skip to page 6 for further instructions.

Step 2: Scroll to “Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University” and click on the name. The

below CAS screen will appear. Enter your VT PID/Password to log into CITI.

Students only

If you are a student at Virginia Tech you will receive the below error message after you attempt to

log into SSO.

Error Encountered Virginia Tech and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) have partnered to provide single sign on (SSO) using Virginia Tech's Central Authentication Service (CAS). Due to FERPA requirements, student data is not released without explicit permission. You are seeing this error because your information from Virginia Tech was suppressed. Please proceed to our data release consent site to resolve this issue. If you have concerns about the disclosure of non-directory information ([email protected]) to CITI, please contact us for alternative training options at [email protected].

Please read the error message and if you agree please click on the link to the “data release consent

site” and follow the instructions. Once you consent, you will be able to access the training.

Step 3: After selecting Virginia Tech follow the instructions for setting up an account if you do not

already have one with CITI or select to merge your current CITI account with SSO. If you are new

to CITI, you will go through several screens to setup your profile. If you get the screen illustrated

below please hit continue and follow the instructions.

NOTE: If you have been issued a Virginia Tech email address please use it as your

primary/preferred email address when setting up your profile in CITI to ensure proper recording of

your training completion

Step 4: Under “My Learner Tools for Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University” select

“Add a Course or Update Learner Groups”

Step 5: You will need to enroll in the Learner Group under Question 1 “Responsible Conduct

of Research”. For all other questions select “not at this time” or do not select a course for optional

course enrollments. Note: You may have also received a notice to complete Conflict of Interest

(COI) training. If you received this notice you will also need to select one of the COI modules listed

under “Question 2”.

Step 6: Select “submit”, then click on the course name under “Virginia Polytechnic Institute &

State University Courses” to begin the course.

Step 7: Complete confirmation- After completing the tutorial, click on “Take the quiz” at the

bottom. Click the quiz to confirm that you view the tutorial. There are no other quizzes

associated with the tutorial.

When you complete all required modules successfully, you may print your completion report through

the link: "Print Report" in the Main menu under “completion reports”. The RCR coordinator will be

automatically notified when you have completed the course. You may return to the course site in the

future to obtain a copy of the completion report. *It will take approximately 1 day before the CITI

If you wish to review the tutorial after completion, you can click on the title under “Course” and

Non-VT Employee Login Instructions-New CITI User

All VT employees and students must use the SSO sign in process above. The below instructions

is only for non-VT employees such as collaborators from other institutions.

Step 1: From the Home Page https://www.citiprogram.org, choose “Register” under “Create

an Account”

Step 2: Choose your institutional affiliation (Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University).

Step 3: Choose a Username/Password. Select a security question and answer.

wish, select “I would rather not disclose”.

Step 5: CME/CEU Credits and CITI Course Survey-You do not need these credits to meet the

RCR training requirement. If you would like CME/CEU credits, you will need to contact the

University of Miami Division of Continuing Medical Education at 305-243-6716 or by e-mail at

[email protected]. The costs associated with CME/CEU credits will be an individual

responsibility. Course Survey-select yes or no regarding participation in future research surveys.

Step 6 is institutional specific. Each institution determines the fields listed on this page and what

information is required or optional. Any questions regarding the fields on this page should be

directed to [email protected].

Step 7: You will need to enroll in the Learner Group under Question 1 “Responsible Conduct

of Research”. For all other questions select “not at this time” or do not select a course for optional

course enrollments.

Step 8: Finalize Registration

Step 9: After confirming your registration, log into the CITI site. The next page is the Main

Menu. Click on the course title you selected to begin the Virginia Tech Individual Conflict of

Interest Course.

Step 10: Please complete the Integrity Assurance statement presented at the top. The system

will allow you to start taking the courses after completing it. You will need to turn your speakers on

so you can hear the audio portion. If you need special support for viewing this tutorial please

contact the COI Office at [email protected].

Step 11: Completion Report- When you complete all required modules successfully, you may print

your completion report through the link: "Print Report" in the Main menu under “completion

reports”. The RCR Coordinator will be automatically notified when you have completed the course.

You may return to the course site in the future to obtain a copy of the completion report. *It will

take approximately 1 day before the CITI record populates in the VT RCR Training Tracker System.

If you wish to review the tutorial after completion, you can click on the title under “View Previously

Completed Coursework” and review the material.

CITI Users already registered & affiliated with VT

If you are already a Registered User affiliated with Virginia Tech, log onto CITI as usual

with your user ID and password. When your MAIN MENU screen loads (see below left),

click on the link for “Add a course or update your learner groups for VPI & SU”.

This will take you to the ‘Select Curriculum’ page, shown below at right. You will need

to enroll in the Learner Group under Question 1. For all other questions select “not at this

time” or do not select a course for optional course enrollments.

The next page is the Main Menu. Click on the course title to begin the selected RCR

course. You only need to take one RCR course to meet the requirement.

Software needed:

Some modules include video and will require specific software.

You will need the REAL Video Plug In to view some of the content in the course. Click on the logo to

download a free copy of the real Video Player

You will need the QuickTime player for some of the Video presentations. Click on the image to

download a free player.

Some of the hyperlinked content may be in the PDF format. You will need an Adobe Acrobat Reader.
