Instructions for installing the dual HID headlights into a Victory Vision The following instructions are what I would consider “doing it right the first time”. It will require dismantling the entire front of the motorcycle. These instructions are provided by, and created by a Vision rider like yourself and should be used as a “GUIDE” . They are in no way considered a complete and accurate installation manual. It is provided as a courtesy and as a guide for you to install your lights yourself. Only you are responsible for the installation, and use of these HID lights. In the event of a complication or problem, you must research and remedy yourself. With all that being said, I hope this guide proves useful to you. The job is pretty straightforward. Just take your time, lay out the parts and attachment hardware in order and together as they come off. This will prevent you from searching for the appropriate piece when it comes time to reassemble and will help you in reassembly in the correct order. To facilitate the job in one go, the following are the tools and supplies I used for the install. -‐ 10mm wrench (ratchet wrench works best) -‐ 10mm ¼” drive ratchet -‐ 13mm socket -‐ 13mm deep socket -‐ Zip Ties -‐ 4mm hex wrench -‐ 6mm hex wrench -‐ Examination gloves -‐ Double-‐sided tape -‐ Body Panel tool -‐ about 10” of cable wrap -‐ alcohol pads (not shown)
Even before you start dismantling the bike, lay out the complete HID setup so that you can familiarize yourself with the connections. If everything is connected correctly, everything will be connected to something EXCEPT for the Red wire, 2 black ground wires and the 3-‐pronged plug. Your harness may look different (like bulbs or subtle differences in the wires) but the end result will be the same.
Use caution in handling the HID bulbs. They should have a protective cover of some sort (plastic or foam) that slides off the bulbs. When removing the bulb covers, avoid touching the bulbs whatsoever. Examination gloves are a good thing to wear whenever handling them “just in case” you do contact the bulbs. Oil and dirt can dramatically reduce their service life.
Dismantling the Vision. Remove the following (instructions provided on the following pages). These provided were taken from a 2010 Vision manual. They were checked against a 2012 manual and they were the same. USE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING THE JOB CORRECTLY. Last step is to remove the Turn signal and Headlight assembly. There is a 6mm bolt on outside edges of the turn signals as you look at them from above. After you remove these two bolts and two from underneath holding on the headlight to the bike, as you stand in front facing the bike, gently pull outwards the end of the turn signals. This will pop out the edges from their mounting holds and then the whole assemble should be free. I found placing the headlight and turn signal assembly upside down on a table or workbench easiest to work with. Remove the rubber headlight bulb covers. Should look something like the following picture. Remove stock H4 bulbs.
ASSEMBLY THE HID BULBS AND RUBBER COVERS If your bulbs are of the style in the picture provided at the beginning of the instructions (with chrome reflectors over the bulbs), then the following will apply. If they are of the style where there are no chrome covers reflectors over the bulbs, then the install is much simpler. If you have the later style then they will simply install as a regular bulb and the rubber covers will just install normally. Install the bulbs, then feed wires through the rubber covers, then install the rubber covers. The cover around the bulb will be a little slack but if you install the cover with the center pushed in toward the bulb, any debris and water will be kept from entering the housing. Put on gloves to protect the HID bulbs. Grab one of the HID bulbs and one of the rubber headlight covers. Remove the Housing from the HID bulb. This is done by gently twisting the housing then pulling off the bulb cover. Very similar to how a turn signal bulb is installed.
The OEM rubber headlight cover will go onto the HID bulb. Be careful when placing bulb through the back side of the rubber that you don’t touch it or tweak it. You will slide and push the rubber cover down over the base of the bulb until the rubber is flush (or a little below) the edge of black housing for the bulb. Doesn’t matter where the rubber pull tab ends up. Reinstall the bulb housing and cover. It will slide under the rubber cover and into the bulb base. Don’t forget to twist it back into the locked position. Repeat for the other bulb.
INSTALL HID BULBS INTO HEADLIGHT ASSEMBEL. Because the rubber cover is already on the bulb, it’s going to take some work getting the bulb into the housing while putting the bulb retaining clip into place. Putting the bulb in angled up (if the housing is upside down), start working in the bulb, starting with the non-‐clip side of the retainer onto the side of the bulb first, then work the clip side around the bulb. It will be snug as the rubber cover adds thickness to the housing and makes the clip hard to manipulate. When they are both in, it should look something like the following pic.
Now you can turn your attention to the motorcycle. The inside of the tanks are a great place to mount the ballasts. They are up and out of the way. The best way is to use some STRONG double sided tape. I picked up some Loctite stuff made for outdoor applications. Good up to 240 degrees too so even if those ballasts got warm, it won’t affect the bond. Clean both the backs of the ballasts and the inner tank wall. Two strips of tape on the ballasts then stick them on the tank. Stick them up as high as you can without letting it touch the surrounding aluminum. Don’t want it to chafe or rub.
The harness is next. I installed about 10” of wire loom from the fuse to the battery connector (your harness may already have this). This covers the red of the wire and adds a level of protection to the wire as it provides power to the HID’s. Attach the wire to the POS side of the battery. Just loosen/remove the battery POSITIVE terminal with a 10MM wrench, then slide the wire end under the bolt. From there, run the wire up the left side of the frame. Zip tie where you see fit.
The H4 harness box can be mounted with more double sided tape to the under side of the left fuse box. If mounted here the POSITIVE wire going to be the battery will be just the right length. If you attached the wire to the battery already then any slack in the wire can be removed by simply sticking the harness box to the bottom of the fuse box with that wire somewhat taught.
The boxes coming out of the ballasts can attached to the inside of the aluminum surrounding the air cleaner. They are just the right size to stick to the inside flat surface. Be sure the box is as far back as you can before sticking it on.
Please note: The circled area in the photo is as far forward as you want any wires or boxes to go. The headlight will mount up to this forward flat area and if any wiring or boxes are forward of this then the headlight won’t mount correctly. The finger is just holding a wire out of the way for the photo. Either of the two headlight plugs on the Vision can be used to attach to the HID matching plug. This plug connects and triggers the HID setup so that the HID bulbs work as the original H4 bulbs did. The remaining plug is simply stashed out of the way and not used After all boxes are stuck into position, it’s now time to run and secure extra wiring. Use zip ties to secure up and out of the way. Keep in mind that the area in front of the air filter needs to be kept open. This is where the headlight adjustment knob will be once the headlight is re-‐attached.
After everything is secured and mounted to the Vision, it will look something like this:
The plugs hanging down are all that attach to the HID bulbs in the headlight assembly. It’s now time to reverse the order you removed everything. It will be a tight fit for all the wiring and such when you place the headlight assembly back onto the Vision. The final routing and such of all the wiring is up to you. Make sure you can still access the headlight adjustment ring on the backside of the headlight once it’s reinstalled onto the Vision. Please note….these HID’s are bright. Make sure you align the light after all is reattached. Be aware that as you load the bike, those around you will dramatically notice the change in the headlight aim. Be aware and respectful of others and ride responsibly. Enjoy your new HID lights.
