MATH  READING   WORD WORK  SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES

May 20

(Day 36)

Objects can be measured and compared by length or height. Take a spoon from the kitchen. Can you find objects that are longer or taller than the spoon? Can you find objects that are shorter than the spoon? (NC.K.MD.2)  In your math journal or on blank paper, draw and label 3 items you found that are longer or taller than your spoon. Draw and label 3 items that are shorter than your spoon. Use the sentence frames to compare the length of the items you found, “The ___ is longer/taller than the spoon. The ___ is shorter than the spoon.” Did you find an item that was the same length as the spoon? (NC.K.MD.2)   Complete the Measuring Length activity for Day 36 on pg. 11. Complete the Exit Ticket for Day 36 on pg. 12. Use a different color each time to create a “rainbow”. See pg. 20. (RF.K.4a)

Social Studies Topic: Diverse Cultures Today global travel and communications require that we have an appreciation of people from different countries and cultures. What would it be like to live in another country? Different places are home to cultures different than our own. The world would be a lot less interesting if everyone looked, spoke, and acted in exactly the same way. Activity: Draw a picture of yourself doing something that represents your culture (for example, eating, playing, celebrating a holiday). Show this illustration to an adult and discuss with them what might be different about the picture if you lived in (1) China, (2) Australia, (3) Mexico, (4) Kenya. (K.C.1.2) Optional Enrichment Resource: Ch. 0: If The World Were A Village https://bit.ly/2yqhbpo

May 21

(Day 37)

Choose 4 crayons that are different colors. Put them in order from tallest to shortest. Draw them in that order on a piece of paper or in your math journal. (NC.K.MD.2)  Using paper and scissors, draw 6 worms having different lengths. Cut them out. Glue them on a piece of paper from shortest worm to longest worm. Label the worms A-F. Read each sight word, then hop or jump to the next card. If you get the word wrong, go back to the beginning and start again. See pg. 20. (RF.K.4c)

Social Studies Topic: Cultural Connections While there are differences in the way we look, celebrate, eat, play, and talk around the world, there are many ways that we are alike. In all cultures people care for those they love, they have hopes for the future, and they participate in their communities in some way. Activity: Another similarity that all cultures is that they greet one another. In English we say “Hello” to do this. In Spanish you would say “Hola;” in Swahili “Jambo;” in French “Bon Jour;” in Japanese “Konichiwa;” in Hebrew “Shalom;” in German “Guten tag;” and in Hindi “Namaste;” Draw and color a picture of yourself with four different word bubbles. In each write how you would say hello in a different language. Share your work with an adult and practice these new greetings. (K.C.1.2) Optional Enrichment Resource: Same Same But Different: Read Aloud https://bit.ly/2KmaGGJ

(Day 38)

Can you think of other measurement words that mean the same as longer and measurement words that mean the same as shorter? Write the words in your math journal. (NC.K.MD.1)    Trace your foot or shoe. Trace the foot or shoe of 2 family members. Cut them out. Label the feet or shoes by name. Put the feet or shoes in order from shortest to longest. Then, select any two footprints or shoe prints. Describe how the footprints or shoe prints are alike and different using measurement words. (NC,K.MD.2)  Play I Spy with a family member, using vocabulary words long, short, big, small and tall to describe objects. ● Write and draw: Trees help people by giving them ______. See pg. 18. (RI.K.2)

Optional: Watch the word work instructional video for Day 38 (http://bit.ly/kwordwork).  Spell the Sounds Using Cycle 23 Words: Have a sibling, parent, or friend call out each word to you. Listen carefully to the sounds and spell each word one-by-one on a blank sheet of paper. See pg. 20. (RF.K.4a)

Matter: Observable Properties  Weight of objects

With permission from an adult, gather 2 objects. Decide which object is heavier and explain why. Ask an adult which is heavier and have them explain why. Compare your answers. Ex. The full water bottle is heavier than the tissues. I know this because my hand goes down when I hold it.  Repeat at least 5 times with different objects. If a smaller object feels heavier, talk about how a bigger object isn’t always heavier. Finally line up all 12 objects with the heaviest first. Draw, write or take a picture of the items in order and explain your thinking in written words. (K.P.2.1 )

See pg. 20. (RF.K.4a, RF.K.4c, RF.K.5)

Matter: Observable Properties  Weight of objects

With permission from an adult, gather 2 objects. Decide which object is lighter and explain why. Ask an adult which is lighter and have them explain why. Compare your answers. Ex. The marshmallow is lighter than the shoe. I know this because my hand feels like it floats when I hold it. Repeat at least 5 times with different objects. If a larger object feels lighter, talk about how a smaller object isn’t always lighter. Finally line up all 12 objects with the lightest first. Draw, write or take a picture of the items in order and explain your thinking in written words. (K.P.2.1 )
