Consulting Record

1) TERMAVIDE - Establishment of a conceptual model of Cabeço de Vide thermal water circulation - Period of implementation: 2001 - 2005 - Source of funding: Cabeço de Vide Municipality - Institutions involved: Instituto Superior Técnico and Los Alamos National Laboratory (New Mexico / USA) - Short description: The main objective of this study was to contribute to the refinement of the conceptual circulation model associated with the mineral waters of Cabeço de Vide. The work carried out contributed to the identification of potential recharge areas of the hydromineral system, underground mineral water flow systems, their deep residence time and characterization of the water-rock interaction processes involved. 2) The military training camp of Santa Margarida: environmental impact study after half a century of use - Period of implementation: 2003 - 2005 - Source of funding: Estado Maior das Forças Armadas - Institutions involved: Military Academy, Instituto Superior Técnico, Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear, Nuclear e Instituto Superior de Agronomia de Lisboa. - Short description: After 50 years of use of the Sta. Margarida Military Training Camp, this study aimed to evaluate the vulnerability to potential risks of contamination of surface waters, aquifer systems, soils and sediments, located in the area covered by it. . The analysis of the different environmental components of the study area and its surroundings was carried out, in order to detect anomalies and identify the causes and effects. 3) AGENEAL - Landscape Structures of the Municipality of Almada: Ecological, Cultural and Cyclable. Contributions to Planning. - Period of implementation: 2004 - 2006 - Source of funding: Almada Municipality. - Institutions involved: Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura Paisagista “Prof. Caldeira Cabral” (CEAP-PFCC), Centro de Petrologia e Geoquímica do IST (CEPGIST), Instituto Superior de Agronomia de Lisboa (ISA), Câmara Municipal de Almada. Short description: The scope of this study was to contribute to the delimitation of the maximum infiltration areas in the region under study. Over the last decades, population growth has been putting strong pressure on the development of urban areas in the region under study, contributing to increase the likelihood of negative environmental impacts. This fact highlights the need to use hydrogeological tools, together with the analysis of the interactions of the various terrestrial subsystems (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere). Thus, the information obtained in the field of hydrogeology has necessarily been integrated into a multidisciplinary approach, namely: geomorphology, soil type and use, and the role it plays in the surface water / groundwater interface. 4) HYDROCALDAS - Contribution of Isotope Hydrology to Update the Conceptual Circulation Model of Caldas da Rainha thermal waters - Period of implementation: 2005 - 2008 - Funding source: Centro Hospitalar das Caldas da Rainha. - Institutions involved: Instituto Superior Técnico, Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear e Centro Hospitalar das Caldas da Rainha. Short Description: The vast majority of thermal waters originate from atmospheric precipitation. However, recharge and underground circulation processes can be relatively complex and it is essential to obtain as much information as possible about the processes involved in order to ensure sustainable management of groundwater resources, including thermal water resources. In this way, it was possible to answer several questions, namely: i) what is the location of the recharge areas of the hydrothermal system? ii) what is the underground water course after infiltration? iii) which water-rock interaction processes are responsible for the mineralization of these thermal waters? iv) what is the interaction between surface waters and thermal waters? 5) Was invited by the IST Analysis Laboratory to be part of the IST Expert Group ascribed to an expertise

to be held in Fafe (N-Portugal) due to possible contamination problems caused by a REPSOL Service Station in local aquifer systems. To this end, he visited the site on 24 January 2007 for a first assessment of the problem and sampling. Present were the Fafe Court Judge and two “helpers”, defense and prosecution lawyers in this case and four representatives of REPSOL. On this trip to Fafe, he was accompanied by Engº Mário Dias of the IST Analysis Laboratory. On 5 July 2007, a new sampling campaign was carried out, as it was understood as necessary to collect and analyse well water samples before and after lowering the water table. 6) GHAMA - Geothermal Heating and Climatization of the Military Academy - Period of implementation: 2014-2016 - Funding source: Ministério da Defesa Nacional - Institutions involved: Academia Militar and Instituto Superior Técnico. Short description: In the facilities of the Military Academy there are considerable charges for the air conditioning and heating of buildings (HVAC and HVACR) as well as water for human consumption and irrigation. This study incorporated techniques and methodologies in the field of Earth Sciences from the use of geothermal heat pumps (GSHP) to provide proper soil and subsoil management laying the groundwork for a pilot installation representative of the applicability of these technologies to military installations in Portugal. 7) RASA - Risks associated with soils and aquifers systems at CMSM: chemical and viral evaluation. - Period of execution: 2016-2018 - Funding source: Estado Maior do Exército - Institutions involved: Academia Militar and Instituto Superior Técnico. Short description: This study was focused on identifying and characterizing the risks associated with viral load and chemical constituents present in the aquifer systems and soils of the Sta. Margarida Military Camp (CMSM) after 60 years of use. Although the water supply to the “urban area” of the CMSM is carried out through the municipal public water supply system, the Caniceira borehole has been used regularly, either for washing military installations and vehicles or for filling the water pool used by CMSM occupants. Water-soil systems were monitored for the presence and quantification of human enteric viruses such as Norovirus, Adenovirus and Hepatitis A, which are frequently detected in environmental systems and have been implicated as the cause of various outbreaks, of which Norovirus are considered to be the primary cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide, and a leading cause of food poisoning easily "acquired" through recreational waters.

The objective of this program was to integrate geology in the daily lives of the population, in order to make them aware of its importance for the development and sustainability of large urban centres. The city of Lisbon has “its foundations” in very diverse geological formations, forming a vast succession of rocky strata, archiving a history that goes back to about 95 million years ago, with sedimentary rocks with both continental and marine fossils. Such places have the value of "geomonuments" and constitute as the "pages of a book" where one can read the oldest chapter in the history of this region. Collaborated in the organization of the 1st Specialization Course in Medical Geology of the IST, which took place from July 5 to 10, 2010, at the Holiday Inn Hotel, having been responsible for the module “Hydrothermalism” and for the preparation of the Technical Visit to the Thermal Spa of Cabeço de Vide (Portugal), having also prepared the text that served as the Guide for the Technical Visit. * Was Chairman of the 15th Water-Rock Interaction International Symposium (WRI-15) which took place in Évora, Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage City, from 16 to 21 October 2016, under the auspices of the Water-Rock Interaction Working Group (WRI-WG) of the International Association of GeoChemistry (IAGC). development of these Events, or as participants, presenting Oral Communications and/or Posters. Participated in the "Technical Visit to Sao Miguel (Azores) - Energy Challenges in Atlantic Islands, as part of KAVA activity for MSc students of ENTECH and SELECT, from 9 to 12 April 2017. On November 21st and 22nd, 2017 participated in IST, in the "Science Cocktail" held during the Week of Sci&Tech. Activity Summary: Theme b) Why mineral waters present so diverse chemistry? The purpose of this activity was to demonstrate why mineral waters have such a diverse chemical composition and so distinct total mineralization. For this, examples of known mineral waters (Pedras Salgadas, Vimeiro and Luso) were presented whose deep circulation is associated with distinct geological formations such as granites, limestones and quartzites, respectively. Hand samples of this type of rock were presented. In order to measure the electrical conductivity (EC) of these waters, a conductivity meter, commonly used in field work, was used which allowed the EC to be measured in μS/cm, which is usually the same order of magnitude as total water mineralization expressed in mg/L. Participated in the "Technical Visit to Sao Miguel (Azores) - Energy Challenges in Atlantic Islands, as part of the KAVA activity for MSc students of ENTECH and SELECT, from 15 to 18 February 2018. On February 2019 participated in IST, in the "Science Cocktail" under the topic “Why mineral waters present so diverse chemistry”. Participated in the "Technical Visit to Sao Miguel (Azores) - Energy Challenges in Atlantic Islands, as part of the KAVA activity for MSc students of ENTECH and SELECT, from 14 to 17 February 2019.
