2014 ITE Toronto Section Spring Luncheon: Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project – City of Mississauga: Successes and Challenges Friday, May 2, 2014, Le Jardin Conference and Event Centre, Woodbridge

This year’s ITE Toronto Section Luncheon was held on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Le Jardin Conference and Event Centre in Woodbridge, with the key speaker’s notes focusing on Light Rail Transit in Mississauga. The City of Mississauga is transforming into a vibrant, safe and connected global city where people and businesses are choosing to locate. Building on Mississauga’s multi-modal transportation master plan, Andy Harvey, Director, Engineering and Construction at the City of Mississauga, presented the City’s future game changer: the Hurontario-Main Street Light Rail Transit (HMLRT) Project.

Photo: Andy Harvey presenting at 2014 ITE Toronto Section Spring Luncheon

Over 40 section members attended the Spring Luncheon to hear how the HMLRT corridor will connect the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) of Ontario, Canada. The HMLRT will be instrumental in addressing the increasing traffic demands of 905 to 905 commuting. The City has chosen to plan the 24 km LRT route beyond the boundaries of a transit plan and chosen instead to develop the HMLRT as the catalyst to achieve transit oriented development and complete streets.

The ITE Toronto Section Executive would like to thank Andy Harvey for helping make the Spring Luncheon a success. Ryerson’s ITE - Intensive Transportation Engineering – produces ITS - Intelligent Transportation Students For the past 3 years, students in the fourth year of Ryerson’s Civil Engineering Bachelor’s program can elect to enter a Transportation stream whereby they undertake four Transportation Engineering specialty courses to supplement the 3rd year course in Introduction to Transportation Engineering. The 15 to 20 students who make this choice each year are providing Transportation Engineering employers with a very rich talent pool of prospective employees who can be very productive in a short period of time. The specialty courses are in: Highway Design; Transportation Planning; Traffic Operations and Management; and Pavement Design and Management. These courses introduce the students to state of the art software and procedures such as: SYNCHRO; IHSDM; HCS; RSAP; INTERCALC; TransCAD, SPSS; WinPas; WESLEA; The Highway Capacity Manual; The Highway Safety Manual; The Canadian Capacity Guide for Signalized Intersections; MTO and TAC Geometric Design Guides; and AASHTO’s Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design procedure. In addition to conventional coursework, these students undertake a unique full-year capstone group project that is conducted in collaboration with such notable industrial clients as MTO, HDR (and iTRANS formerly), and CIMA+. Each group works closely with the client and meets bi-weekly with the course coordinator.

Faculty members serve as technical advisors. In the fall semester, the groups define the problem, identify alternative solutions, and evaluate them to select the best solution. In the winter semester, they perform the detailed design of the selected solution. Each group conducts the project in a similar manner to that in practice, including preparation of a company profile, progress report, preliminary report, and a final report. The group runs meetings, which are chaired in rotation by the members, and prepares agendas and minutes. At the end of each semester, the groups make oral presentations to clients and faculty members. Capstone groups have placed highly in national and regional competitions and have had several conference presentations. Both students and clients have highly appreciated the capstone experience. To quote one client: “I want to thank you for this experience. I will be sharing my experience with our senior staff at iTRANS and recommend that we remain involved in the Capstone Program next year. Congratulations on the success of the program.” Joseph Arcaro, Vice-President, iTRANS. For further information on this program and on Ryerson’s ITE Student Chapter, contact Professors Joseph Chow ([email protected]); Bhagwant Persaud ([email protected]); Said Easa ([email protected]); or Medhat Shehata ([email protected]).
