What is the ILM?

They are the UK’s top leadership and management qualifications

specialist, they help to develop more talented leaders than anyone

else, giving them the skills to make a real difference in their

organisation and beyond.

Educational qualifications

versus vocational qualifications

Most of ILM’s qualifications are vocational. They deliver the skills,

knowledge and experience you need to do a job in the real world.

Ranging from Levels 2 to 7, the qualifications cater to all levels of

management and offer a clear route to career progression.

Level 2 – Team Leader/Supervisor

Level 3 – Junior Managers

Level 4 – Middle Managers

Level 5 – Middle Managers

Level 6 – Senior Managers (Director of smaller organisations)

Level 7 – Senior Managers (CEO/Director of large divisions)

As you go up the levels, the qualifications demand more complex,

comprehensive skills and knowledge

All ILM qualifications are awarded by The City and Guilds of

London Institute which was founded in 1878 and is

incorporated by Royal Charter.

The Award is the shortest and most concise qualification.

The Certificate provides a broad base of knowledge and skills.

The Diploma is the most comprehensive qualification with an

extensive programme of learning

Where did I start?The Fundamentals of Managing Volunteers

- which led to an ILM Level 3 Award in Effective Management

This consisted of

• An initial telephone induction

• Three one day workshops at a convenient central London venue

• Guided home study with tutorial support

• Two written assessments guided by work based assignments

and reflective reviews:

1. Recruiting, Selecting and Inducting New Staff in the

Workplace

2. Motivating to Perform, Organising and Delegating

What did the workshops

consist of ?Day 1 We looked at •How does volunteer management compare to that of paid members of staff?•How to keep on the right side of the law•Policy framework and developing a policy•Understanding what motivates volunteers •Developing an inclusive recruitment process•How to design attractive volunteer roles and how to advertise them

Day 2 We looked at •Approaches to selecting volunteers•Good interview practice•Differences between selecting volunteers and paid members of staff•Good practice in volunteer induction, how to present information in a range of intake styles•Evaluating the induction process•Volunteer support and supervision – using coaching skills
