Tallinn, Estonia, 23-27 May 2016 3

Based on the Law No. 8025 date 9/11/1995 on

“Protection from the ionising radiation”

It was approved Regulations for radon

concentration, No. 591, dated 18.08.2011, by the

Decision of Council of Ministers

The object of these Regulations was to define the

reference levels for the concentration of radon in

workplaces and dwellings and for the activity

concentration of radionuclides in water intended for

human consumption, building materials etc.

REGULATION REGARDING TO RADON

CONCENTRATION

Page 4: INSTITUTE OF APPLIED NUCLEAR PHYSICS TIRANA-ALBANIA Documents/Radiation... · Tallinn, Estonia, 23-27 May 2016 31 CONCLUSIONS 1. For the Tirana’s schools resulting with high values

Tallinn, Estonia, 23-27 May 2016 4

Maximum of radon concentration allowed in residential,

public buildings and workplaces.

In new buildings the average annual radon concentration in the

domestic environments should be no more than 200Bq/m3.

The annual average of radon concentration in domestic

environments constructed before year 2000 should be no more

than 400 Bq/m3.

REGULATION REGARDING TO RADON

CONCENTRATION

DCM No. 957, date 25.11.2015 on «Reference levels and controlmeasures of indoor Radon concentration and other radionuclidesconcentration in commodities»

Article 3: Radon action plan

-RPC shall establish a national program addressing long-term risks from

radon exposure in dwellings, public buildings and workplaces.

-RPC will identify the areas where the radon concentration (as annual

average) in a significant number of buildings is expected to exceed the

reference levels given in this Regulation.

-Radon ingress into new buildings shall be limited so as the reference levels

given in this Regulation are not exceeded.

Article 4: Radon concentration in workplaces

…The annual average concentration of radon in the air inside workplaces

shall not exceed 300 Bq/m3.

 IAEA TC Project, ALB/9/008, Titled:

“Upgrading of the Indoor Radon Monitoring Capabilities in Albania”, 2012 - 2014

Distributed 400 detectors in 18 cities

Based on the discussions with IAEA experts it is intended tostudy some principal areas of the Albania, which:

1. Have been identified as areas with high radon gas trend, byearlier studies

2. Have a greater population density

3. That not have been studies before

1. - Inform the relevant institutions

- Ministry of Environmental

- Ministry of Education

- Ministry of Health

2. - Inform the interested institutions for measurements in ordinary workplaces like office building, etc.

SOME CURRENT ACTIVITIES TO REDUCING

RADON LEVELS IN EXISTING BUILDINGS

Page 30: INSTITUTE OF APPLIED NUCLEAR PHYSICS TIRANA-ALBANIA Documents/Radiation... · Tallinn, Estonia, 23-27 May 2016 31 CONCLUSIONS 1. For the Tirana’s schools resulting with high values

Tallinn, Estonia, 23-27 May 2016 30

Recommendations to the above mentioned Institutions in order to take measures to reduce radon concentration by making several interventions:

1. Sealing of floors and walls

2. Sealing of cracks between the walls of the basement due to the discharge of the sink or the basement floor.

3. Sealing of cracks in the floor

4. Increasing indoor ventilation

5. The best isolation of water pipes

CONCLUSIONS

1. For the Tirana’s schools resulting with high values of

Radon, the measurements will be repeated several times

and detailed studies are needed.

2. The work will continue in the future to increase

significantly the number of measurements.

3. Problem, as always, financial issues.
