Flimmaking for the Digital ClassroomWednesday and Thursday, June 13-14, 9 am - 3 pm (two-day workshop; lunch included)Presenter: Harry Muniz, Head-Royce Film and Video Teacher Cost: $350This course is designed to give teachers hands-on experi-ence in recording and editing video, as well as show the various ways to present your finished work: adding to a Keynote/Powerpoint, posting on YouTube, embedding on websites, writing to DVD. Use the immersive power of video to create a dynamic, multimedia learning experience for your students.

SMARTboarding 101 (grades 6-12)Wednesday and Thursday, June 13-14, 9 am - 3 pm (two day workshop; lunch included)Presenters: Head-Royce math teachers Kenny Ewbank, Scott Clark, and Naoko AkiyamaCost: $350 This course will be directed towards novice users of the SMARTboard or teachers and administrators who want to learn more about this exciting new technology. The class will focus on introducing the hardware/software capabilities, sharing/developing sample lessons and best practices, and revealing tips and tricks, all presented by teachers who have worked with the technology for multiple years. The course will feature “hands on” activities with SMARTboards, and the opportunity to create a sample lesson plan for specific subjects and grades. We will also discuss some of the research that supports the use of the interactive whiteboard in the math classroom.

Using Blogs & Websites in Your ClassroomThursday, June 14, 9 am - 3 pm (one day workshop; lunch included)Presenter: Andy Spear, Head-Royce English and Journalism Teacher Cost: $175Maybe you’ve considered using a blog in your course…or wondered whether a full-blown website would be valuable to your classroom. Perhaps you’ve even tried out these tools, but want further guidance in using them, in choosing which is right for you, or help sorting the various sites that offer platforms to build from. This workshop will examine the uses of each type of web publishing format, and help guide you towards the one that will best serve your course and goals. Time will be allotted for individual work, so that each class member can examine and tinker with various programs (or spend concentrated time building a specific blog or site).

Teach your students to edit and present interviews? Begin your own mini radio show? We’ll cover the basics of recording and editing sound, and talk over some of the basic tricks of making polished audio recordings. Time will be allotted for individual project work, so that each class member gets hands-on practice recording, loading audio, and using editing software.

Using iPads in the K-8 ClassroomWednesday, June 14th, 9 am - 3 pm (one day workshop; lunch included)Presenter: Katherina Weekes, Head-Royce Kindergarten TeacherCost: $175Two years ago, Head-Royce teachers began experimenting with iPads in their classrooms. Since then, the tablets have been successfully integrated into our curriculum. Come learn about the process, hear what’s working for us, and discover how the iPad can enrich what’s going on in your classroom. We will share project-based learning techniques and lead hands-on exploratory tablet time.

Using iPads in the 6-12 ClassroomWednesday, June 13, 9 am - 3 pm (one day workshop; lunch included)Presenter: Cheryl Davis, Acalanes School District, Apple Distinguished Educator, and Google Certified TeacherCost: $175Join a master tech educator for a hands-on session of explor-ing ideas, lessons and tips for using iPads in the classroom. This will be an in-depth look at how iPads can be used as a tool for learning content as well as used by students for cre-ative projects. Research, practice, and create using Apps and iTunes material that you can use in your curriculum.

Introductory Computer Programming Environments: Scratch and GreenfootMonday and Tuesday, June 25-26, 9 am - 3 pm (two-day workshop, lunch included)Presenter: Steve Gregg, Head-Royce Math and Computer Science Teacher Cost: $350This workshop will provide an introduction to the Scratch and Greenfoot programming environments. In the opinion of many, Scratch is the best way to introduce computer programming to young children, and has been successfully used by teachers at the lower school level. Greenfoot is a more sophisticated programming environment, probably only appropriate for students in Grade 8 and up. In Greenfoot, students write actual computer code in Java (as opposed to the “drag and drop” coding of Scratch), and learn some of the fundamental ideas of object-oriented programming. Like Scratch, however, Greenfoot is specifically designed to make it easy to produce graphical artwork, simulations, and games.

This workshop should be of interest to both teachers who have no previous experience with Scratch or Greenfoot and want to learn how to program in these environments, and also to experienced teachers who want to exchange ideas for lesson plans to use in the classroom.

Design Thinking Studio Monday and Tuesday, June 25-26, 9 am - 3 pm (two day workshop; lunch included) Presenter: Maureen Carroll and Lime Design AssociatesCost: $400 Do you want to help students develop the creative confidence that will prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of 21st century learning? Join us for a high-energy experiential workshop aimed at introducing the design thinking process—an approach to teaching and learning that supports 21st century thinking skills. The workshop is built upon learning by doing, and participants will learn the phases of the design thinking process—exploration, ideation and experimentation–as they tackle an innovation challenge. Participants leave the workshop with both an understanding of design thinking and how to integrate the process into a variety of educational settings. This workshop is intended for school teachers of all levels and school administrators, as well as those working in informal learning environments (museums, camps, after-school programs, home-schoolers, arts organizations and non-profits).

Reinventing the Final Project: New Tools and New ScholarshipMonday and Tuesday, June 25-26, 9 am - 3 pm (two-day workshop, lunch included)Presenters: Crystal Land, Head-Royce Academic Dean; Mary Goglio, Head-Royce Library Director; and Dave Levin, Head-Royce Systems AdministratorCost: $350Using the umbrella of 21st century skills that your students most need to know, the purpose of this two day workshop is to enable students to access information and retain knowledge by taking a standard assessment and reinventing it in new and meaningful ways. Through a study of collaborative tools and innovative final projects that have worked (films, Keynotes, and Prezis, to name a few) and a clarification of the academic and content goals for your assignment, you will begin to shape alternative approaches to encourage and evaluate student thinking and learning. We will work together to understand some advantages of incorporating specific technologies into your curriculum and assignments; highlight and guide you through our curated selection of great tech tools; work alongside you to build or rework a project for your own curriculum; and prepare you to recognize the kinds of tools that enhance learning. Please bring a unit or project you would like to revise, a willingness to share and any questions about technologies you would like to explore.

PrintmakingMonday and Tuesday, June 25-26, 9 am - 3 pm (two-day workshop, lunch included)Presenter: Ann B. Murphy, Head-Royce Art TeacherCost: $385 (includes materials cost)This two-day course is a great opportunity for art teachers to develop printmaking techniques, for other educators to learn techniques they could use in their classrooms, and for budding artists to delve into the craft. Participants will learn the techniques of linocut and etching, they will learn to prepare plates for printing, and they will learn to master the printing press. Day one will be devoted to the linocut process; students will design plates and create linocut prints, then share their prints and build hand bound books. Day two will build on techniques mastered on the first day—students will create an etching on plexiglass and use a traditional press to create their own prints on specially prepared printing paper.

Transforming Recess and the PlaygroundTuesday and Wednesday, June 26-27, 9 am - 4 pm (two day workshop; lunch included)Presenter: Playworks Training Cost: $400Recess can set the stage for what happens in the classroom. Much of what takes place out on the playground, however, is often outside the structure of what happens indoors. Trans-form your recess into a deliberately shaped, fun, and power-ful tool to support a positive school climate and classroom learning. These workshops will teach methodologies that use the fun of play as an opportunity to increase physical activ-ity, decrease bullying, and support learning.

Day One: The Power of Play

• Introduces the importance of play and physical activity that is fun, safe, and inclusive

• Explores the benefits of play and the barriers youth face when accessing play and physical activity

• Provides tools and resources for implementing healthy play, physical activity, and creating an inclusive and respectful environment

Design Thinking Garret: Bringing Design Thinking into Your K-12 ClassroomWednesday, June 27 OR Thursday, June 28 9 am - 3 pm (one day workshop; lunch included) Presenter: Maureen Carroll and Lime Design Associates Cost: $225Do you want to spend time in a collaborative and creative workspace honing your design thinking skills and learning how to integrate design thinking into your curriculum? Join us for Design Thinking Garret. In this intensive one-day session, Lime Design coaches will provide small group and individual guidance on how to skillfully weave design thinking skills and mindsets into your practice. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to ask ‘where do I go next?’ and get expert guidance in finding that path. You will leave Design Thinking Garret with a deeper understanding of the design thinking process and hands-on and ready to implement activities for your students. Please note that space in each session is limited in order to ensure significant time for individual guidance. SongwritingTuesday, June 26, 9 am - 3 pm (one day workshop; lunch included) Presenter: Willie Adams, Head-Royce Dean of Student LifeSongwriting is a great avenue through which to access students’ connection to both words and music. Our course is designed to give students a comprehensive approach to writing song lyrics, as well as to composing and recording musical accompaniment using Apple’s Garageband soft-ware. Students are exposed to a variety of popular songwrit-ing styles and techniques and then work both individually and collectively to create their own original material. Come join us as we walk (and play!) through this class -—including the recording process—and learn how you can use these techniques in your own work.

Bringing Mindfulness to the Classroom and the CampusWednesday, June 27, 9 am - 3 pm (one-day workshop, lunch included)Presenter: Neethi Venkateswaran, Head-Royce Math teacher Cost: $175Are you interested in meditation and bringing more mindfulness to your personal life? How can we channel that energy and thoughtfulness into our classrooms and the general school setting as well? Most people associate meditation and spiritual practices with history/religion and English classes, but mindfulness can (and should) be addressed in all classrooms. While some exercises and strategies will be presented, this will also be a collaborative workshop, where we can discuss: • Methods/strategies that have worked so far

• How to lead group meditation classes, with students and adults of all ages

• How to tactfully bring in the discussion of religion/philosophy into this practice

• How to bring mindfulness methodologies to collaborative work with colleagues and staff
