RECENT MEETING

This year, the Saskatchewan Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF) organized the joint

CIF & ASFP Conference & Annual General Meetings. The meetings were held on April 18-19, 2018 in

Prince Albert Inn. The CIF organized two days full of activities and presentations, providing excellent

professional development opportunities for the attendees. The theme was “Effective Communications for

Forestry Practitioners”

Unfortunately, ASFP was unable to conduct its Annual General Meeting, on April 19th, as planned. Due

to unforeseeable events we did not have 50% of Council present at the AGM. According to our bylaws,

we were not able to proceed with the meeting.

In order to conduct the business of the Association, as required under our legislation, another meeting

will be held on May 29th. To facilitate as many members attending as possible, the meeting will be held

concurrently at more than one location. Details will follow regarding time and venues.

A call for nominations was recently distributed electronically to all members.

RIVETING SPEECH FROM THE PRESIDENT

Despite not being able to proceed with the meeting, the annual reports were presented to the attendees

by the President, the Registrar, and representatives from each committee. After the reports, the

President of the Association, Bryan Fraser, concluded with the Incoming President Remarks. Bryan

delivered a captivating speech about the evolution of Forestry; highlighting differences from the time he

graduated in 1976, to what is today. His stories made some of the audience reflect, and others

reminisce. His main message to the audience was: “Keep your eye on the horizon”.

CERTIFICATE PRESENTATIONS

The Admissions Committee Report stated that, in 2017, six members wrote the Registration Exam,

and all six passed the exam, which is unprecedented in the history of the Association. At this

meeting, four members were awarded certificates for the successful completion of their Registration

Exam, earning them their full RPF and RPFT title. The President (Bryan Fraser), the Registrar (John

Doucette), and a representative from the Admissions Committee (Kerry McIntyre) presented a

certificate to Narayan Dhital, RPF; Amy Slack, RPF; Stephanie Stuart, RPFT; and Brogan Waldner,

RPFT. Once again, Congratulations to these four members!

New Web App On Climate Displacement

Check out this new web app on climate displacement in protected areas. The online application

allows users to query the climate velocity and displacement classification data, and to retrieve the

predicted incoming and outgoing future climate locations for each and every pixel within any of the

protected areas. The climate data used to generate the climate velocity displacement results are

provided for each protected area along with a downloadable report (in BETA). This web app can be

Saskatchewan Safety Research Symposium

On May 3rd, the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Centre for Research and Scholarship in Health and the Office of Applied Research and Innovation is holding the Saskatchewan Safety Research Symposium. This symposium will discuss the current state and future of safety research in Saskatchewan. This event will connect applied safety researchers, safety practitioners, industry members, and safety organizations/associations in Saskatchewan to share existing research, challenges, and ideas for future research collaborations.

Tree Planting Initiative

Location:

Communities within or close to the Prince Albert Forest Management Area, as well as within close proximity, with a maximum of five communities.

Timeframe:

May 8th- May 12th, 2018 May 8- Beardys and Okemasis First Nation May 9- Muskeg First Nation May 10- Montreal Lake Cree Nation May 11- Mistawasis Nêhiyawak May 12- Kristi Lake Trails (outside of Prince Albert)

Purpose:

To actively engage with community members, targeting students, with the objective of utilizing donated seedlings and educating community members in the technique and objectives of replanting.

Rationale:

According to the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of the Economy: Forestry Development Branch, First Nations and Métis people make up over 30% of the workforce, which is by far the largest percentage of Indigenous forestry employees in any province. For proponents in the forestry sector in Saskatchewan, active engagement with Indigenous communities can be a necessity for building successful long-term relationships. This initiative will aid in Carrier Forest Product’s goal of building healthier and more positive relationships with indigenous communities.

This initiative is an opportunity for youth and community members to learn more about different aspects forestry, such as techniques and purpose of re-planting. For example, community members may learn that for specific species of trees, certain locations to plant may be more ideal than others. Both the location and the method of planting are critical for the long-term survival of the trees.

In addition, this initiative will help cultivate an awareness for activities related to forestry, beyond harvesting. An aspiration identified by communities from this initiative is community members, specifically youth, will be inspired to participate in more outdoor related activities and will be motivated to learn more about educational avenues in the forestry sector.
