Introduction

In my work as a learning expert during the past 30 year years, the Instant Learning ® strategies in this booklet have worked for thousands of people. They have helped employers and employees accomplish their training in a fraction of the time, and well as increase motivation and make memory easier. The Instant Learning ® strategies have also been used in medical schools in order to raise their medical board scores, with trainers in both public and private schools and corporations, and have raised the grades and test scores of over 200,000 students to A’s and B’s. Understanding “how you learn” will give you a lifetime of learning success. Most schools and universities teach “what to learn”, but skip over the most crucial step of all – how the brain learns and which strategies have been proven to make learning faster and easier. This booklet, along with the Instant Learning ® book series, whether used in conjunction with Instant Learning ® In The Workplace books, to master new learning more rapidly and cut training time, or used in schools with Instant Learning ® for Amazing Grades to accelerate the learning process and raise test scores, have been used successfully for people who know the brain allows us an easier way to learn and blueprint known to achieve learning success. Welcome and Thank You! I am honored to be a contributor to David Riklan’s compilation of 101 Great Ways To Improve Your Life and hope you find the information inspiring and life changing. Warmly,

What’s In It For Me?

Why learn faster? What will it do for you? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Can You See It?

Seeing is not the same as meaning. Neuroscience says learning and long term memory is more efficient when it has meaning across many regions of the brain. To make meaning, increase the intensity of the neural pathways by adding Instant Learning ® strategies like moving pictures, emotions, color, humor, pleasure. Use creativity. Take a trip down all the memory lanes in your brain. Give learning and new information a purpose. Notice a key word, picture, etc. and imagine all the attributes. Ask questions – who, what, where, when, why, and most importantly – how.

I Know, I Know!

I. Learning is not about being ___________, it is always about ________________. Strategies can be easily _______________________. For example, imagine holding a ________________ and __________________________________ What would the result be? _______________________________________________ Now do this: Hold a _____________________ and imagine ____________________ a ball and What is the result? _______________________________________________________________________

II. The Least Known Secret About Learning….

Learning styles and learning mastery formats must match. If there is a miss-match, it’s like trying to trying to play basketball on a baseball field, or putting on shoes of two different sizes. You don’t have either the right environment, or tools. Imagine this: Would you give a baseball player a written test to see if he or she could make the team?

How Do You Learn Best? What Is Your Personal Learning Style?

Take the Personal Learning Styles Inventory at http://www.HowToLearn.com

Visual Learning Style

• Learn best through seeing • Neat, orderly • Speak quickly, head up, shoulders erect • Good long range planners • Good spellers • Memorize by strong visual associations • Function best with overall view before proceeding • Have trouble remembering verbal instructions unless written down

Auditory Learning Style

• Learn best through hearing • Like to listen to lectures, music and others talking • Good story tellers • Talk to self • Like talking more than writing • Are easily distracted by noise - generally can't listen to

someone talk on phone and listen to another talk to them at same time • Usually have problems with projects involving visualization • Likes jokes better than comics

Kinesthetic - Physical Learning Style

• Learn best by doing and through movement • Good athletes • Speak more slowly • Respond to physical rewards • Memorize by walking and seeing • Gesture a lot, clutter in work or living space -o.k. • Can't sit still for long periods of time • Use action words when speaking • Touch others to get their attention • Want to act things out and like involved games

How Learning Occurs and Why Learning Is Not About Being Smart!

I. Belief: Who do you know who’s great at something? _________________________ What is it _________________? What would happen if you _________________________________________________? Belief comes from ___________________________. How to get into a great learning frame of mind? How can you find times when you were __________________________? What were three of those times as they relate to what you want to do now?

Gem: Why Affirmations Do Not Work To Change Beliefs Focusing on your lack of learning ability – and then affirming you have it,

causes your brain cancels out the desired goal.

Your intention to learn must be pure and unfettered and focused only in alignment with the fact that your ability to learn is perfect. You now have the success strategies to put your learning abilities into practice.

II. Body – Your physiology will always give you clues as to how you feel. What do ball players or sports teams look like when they are successful? How do sick and depressed people look? What messages is your body position sending to your brain?

Notes

What body position is best for your learning and success? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

III. Association. The brain learns best by connecting one thing with another. Recall is far faster. Example: Just like a computer or a filing cabinet, put the information in more than one place and under different headings to find it faster. What do you associate with learning?

Remember your first kiss: where, when, with whom, any music? Even with more intense study material, with each key point, ask yourself- what does this remind me of? Associate the answer with humor, color, movement, etc. to increase learning ability and memory. Your learning will be much faster with the association “hook” in your brain. Memory experts use association “hooks” to connect one thing with another, and recall large amounts of information instantly. For example, names, dates, and reading material.

Gem:

All Memory Happens Faster With Association

To create an association ask yourself this question with any new learning.

What does this remind me of?

Gem: Biology of Success in Learning – Add These Quick Tips

Add Scent: Vanilla increases serotonin levels – the feel good chemical. So does apple.

Add Full Spectrum Lighting To Your Work Environment and Home.

Full spectrum is like daylight and sunshine. It makes you feel better

instantly. Fluorescent lights flicker and can make your brain tired and foggy – and the emf is hard on your system.

Movement and Frequent Breaks

Memory research says primacy and recency. We remember what we learned first and last better than the middle. So take more breaks to increase primacy and recency.

Eat More Protein – Peanuts, almonds, lean meats, cheese, eggs

Keeps your blood sugar stable. Fewer spikes, more energy and increased brain power.

IV. Pictures. Been to the movies? Read a book? Which is easier to recall in more detail? Why and through what modality? Use the same for learning. Increase the thickness/intensity of those neural pathways by adding moving pictures, emotions, repetition. Become a movie maker – in living color! Make pictures close, bigger, brighter.

Picture Perfect Summaries ™ Federally funded 1 year study of students at 4 colleges showed: Those using full bodied imagery (mind/picture maps) in learning Scored 12% better on immediate recall 26% better in long term recall (Dr. Owen Caskey and David Meir, Center for Accelerated Learning) Study at University of Western Ontario - Imagery boosted memory 3 times higher than repetition.

About 80% of brain is involved in visual processing

V. Input, Storage, Output – Storage Match

Maximizing Learning

Exponentially increase your learning power by adding other learning style strategies to your preferred style

Example: Written exams are given in the visual learning style. Visual input, storage and retrieval strategies work best for those types of exams.

By matching the input, storage and output styles you can accelerate your success

Gem:

Think From The End In Mind – How Do I Have To Demonstrate What I Know?

Use that learning style modality or combination to learn, store and retrieve,

and apply the information.

Miss-matches between the way a person learns and how they are evaluated for what they know, may result in problems in disguise. People who match input styles, storage styles and output testing styles have extraordinary learning success.

Start with the end in mind- Access more of your brain!

Find out how you will be assessed for mastery (whether in writing, out loud or through physical means) and match that style to your input, storage and retrieval of the material.

Model other learning style movements to add to your success. Move eyes up and add the eye movement camera technique to access the more

visual area of your brain. Move your eyes toward your ears to become more auditory. Move your body and put eyes down to add a more physical learning style strategy.

Make Your Learning Stress Free

Why Stress Inhibits Learning

When the learner is threatened by pressure, stress and feelings of previous failure, the primitive brain's survival instincts take over. This will limit access to higher thinking and the mind may go blank. Fearful Rise to a new challenge Overwhelmed Mastering a New Skill Impossible I'm Possible Threatened Rewarded with Feedback Failure No failure - only feedback Provide stretching experiences so new learning can reach the neo-cortex.

Dramatically Increase Your Brain Power

1. Brain Smart Nutrients Learning, Memory, Concentration and Creativity are cognitive functions. To function at optimum levels the brain requires fuel, lubrication, specialized additives and energizers. Food is deficient in minerals due to soil depletion, so you cannot eat enough quantities to provide optimum nutrients. In addition, stress, lack of sleep, medications, depression, and illness contribute to brain deterioration. Although the brain is only 2% of body weight, it receives 20% of the blood pumped by your heart. Without proper nutrients, proteins needed by nerve cells cannot be manufactured, thus impairing your mental functions, including memory.

Numerous medical studies indicate benefits of supplementation: • Increased alertness, mental energy and concentration • Improved test scores and IQ scores • Improved problem solving ability • Improved verbal memory

Supplements recommended in these studies:

• Lecithin, choline - this is the major source for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which determines

human behavior and memory. All forms of lecithin/choline should be taken with vitamin B-5 (pantothenic acid) to ensure proper absorption.

• • At the NIH, Dr. Christian Gillin says giving people choline "makes them smarter. Our tests show

that giving people choline increases their memory and learning ability." U.S. government tests showed that lecithin could make people 25% smarter! Choline boosts memory within 90 minutes and its effects last four to five hours. The most potent form of lecithin is phosphatidyl choline (PC).

• Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids - Research indicates flaxseed & fish oil have the highest absorption

and best results. Omega 3's support brain and immune function and are a natural anti-inflammatory. I take these daily. Studies at Purdue also show they help eliminate the symptoms of ADHD.

For more information on omega 3’s visit: http://www.howtolearn.com/omega3.html • B-Complex vitamins are essential for all aspects of your nervous system, including proper mental

functioning. B- Smart! • Vitamins C and E are key antioxidants necessary for the manufacture of neurotransmitters and cell

structures and prevents oxidation of important molecules in the cells. • Calcium and Magnesium are very significant for brain health. Magnesium is responsible for

synthesis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is vital for manufacture, storage and transfer of energy in cells. Magnesium is important in the production of critical neurotransmitters that help your brain with cognitive function.

• Copper, Zinc and Selenium are trace minerals key to cognitive function. The distribution of copper

through the brain is linked to the neurons that make dopamine and are essential for nerve communication. Zinc influences the production and function of neurotransmitters and enzymes. The highest concentration of zinc in your brain is located in the hippocampus, the brain's memory center.

• L-glutamine - At the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and the University of Texas,

administration of l-glutamine raised IQ 11 to 17 points in mentally challenged children. This amino acid is well known for its ability to cut sugar and alcohol cravings as well.

Ginkgo Biloba - comes from the leaves of a tree which is the oldest living species on the planet. It is the most widely prescribed medication in Europe where over 10 million prescriptions a year are written. Ginkgo facilitates increased blood flow to the brain.

Bonus Article:

What Top Learners Know That You Don’t Have you ever wanted a better job, higher pay or a big promotion? Eric Stevens wanted all three. He was working full time and went back to school at night to get ahead. He thought all he needed to do was attend every class, take good notes, study hard, and he’d breeze through his first exam. He was wrong. He didn’t know the latest brain research about learning and testing styles that you are about to discover. When Eric got his test back, the smile on his face for the “A” he thought he’d get, quickly turned into pure devastation. A big red “D” stared back at him. What is wrong with me he thought? I did everything I was told and worked so hard. I feel so dumb! Just as he was thinking of quitting his classes, his friend and co-worker, Allan, came over and proudly showed him an “A+” on the same exam. Trying to disguise his shock, Eric asked “How did you do that? I know I worked harder than you did; went to the same classes, studied in the same group, did the same homework and took good notes. Why did I get a “D” while you “Aced” the test?” Allan promised to show Eric the learning style secrets that he mastered long ago from a top learning coach. Allan explained he never learned those strategies in school, but when he finally did get the information, his grades soared, and he learned the material in a fraction of the time. “Wow, Eric thought, “somebody will finally show me how to get the credits I need, learn this stuff in way less time and get that big promotion. My family will be proud of me too!” Like most learners, it wasn’t Eric’s lack of intelligence, effort, lack of motivation or laziness that caused his poor grade. The top education experts will tell you that it is simply a miss-match between your personal learning style and the school’s written testing style that creates lower grades. In other words, the style in which you learn does not match the style in which you are tested. This miss-match is pretty much like giving a baseball player a written test to see whether he or she can throw a curve ball. Matching Your Learning Style to How You Will Be Measured for Success: That weekend, Allan told Eric that people learn in three different styles – pictures (visual) listening (auditory) and physical (kinesthetic). Eric did not know what his personal style was, nor did he know that written tests cater to only one of those three learning styles (the visual, picture style). He also didn’t know that he could quickly learn to add some visual learning style strategies to virtually guarantee his success when studying for and taking written tests. Eric’s friend, Allan, shared the two secrets that allowed Eric to get an A on his very next test. First, he told him to find out how he learned best. Eric took the Personal Learning Styles Inventory for employees at www.howtolearn.com . Eric discovered that he preferred to learn more physically and

didn’t really know how to translate his knowledge into the written visual form quickly enough to get a good grade on his tests. Next, Eric learned how to add the visual learning strategies that work best with written tests. Eric discovered how to add a visual, “think in pictures” style to his physical learning style preference by simply looking in an upward direction and actually making movies in his mind. He did this when he studied and when he recalled those images during his tests. The latest brain research says that “image thinking” is faster and more efficient than words or feelings when recalling information during written tests. Eric quickly “made the grade” when he learned to think and remember what he’d learned in picture form.
