INTRODUCTION | 1Important notes for customers who upgrade

• Chapter 3, Licensing Maya, describes how to license Maya and confirm thatMaya starts.

• Chapter 4, Troubleshooting, describes how to troubleshoot installation andlicensing problems. If you see error messages during installation or you can’trun Maya after installation, see this chapter.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR CUSTOMERS WHO UPGRADE

Note these important system changes:

• Maya 4.5 uses FLEXlm version 7.2 floating license software. Make sure youupgrade license servers as the licensing software installed with previousversions of Maya will not work with Maya 4.5.

• Having multiple versions of Maya installed on a machine and adding eachversion’s path to the user’s environment PATH variable may cause versionconflicts when using standalone programs. In particular rendering fur mayuse the wrong version of the fur renderer and so cause incomplete rendersor not run.

Add only the path that is currently needed for the version of Maya that isbeing run. You may not have to include the path to Maya at all. On IRIX theMaya wrapper script sets the path to the proper path automatically.

• Since Maya 3, Maya stores hotkey preferences in a new file and a differentformat. The first time you start Maya, it will find and convert saved hotkeypreferences to the new Maya 4.5 structure. Do not copy hotkey preferencefiles from a prior Maya version to the Maya 4.5 directory.

• Now after you install Maya, you are prompted to install the encryptedlicenses from the CD. A message tells you if the licenses were installed. Ifthey weren’t, but you have Internet access you can check the README_licfile found in the LicenseMaya directory in the top level of the Maya 4.5Software CD. This readme file contains instructions for downloading andaccessing the most up-to-date encrypted license file from our Web site. Fordetails, see Chapter 3, “Licensing Maya.”

2 INSTALLING MAYA

This chapter describes how to install Maya, as well as the Shader Library. You can choose from the following methods of installation:

• “Installing with Software Manager” on page 9

• “Installing with inst” on page 13

Other methods, such as batch installation, are covered in “Advancedinstallation procedures” on page 15.

What the installation doesThe default installation performs the following tasks:

• Creates /usr/aw (the base location for all Alias|Wavefront software) if itdoes not already exist.

• Creates /usr/aw/maya4.5. Any previous versions of Maya are leftuntouched.

• Creates or updates the symbolic link from /usr/aw/maya to the actualinstallation location.

• Updates A|W common software (/usr/aw/COM) to work with Maya. Thissoftware contains the shared libraries and license-related programs used byall Alias|Wavefront software.

• Creates symbolic links from some of the files in /usr/sbin to the new Mayasoftware.

• Creates an Alias|Wavefront software page in the Icon catalog if it does notalready exist.

• Adds Alias|Wavefront file types to the file database (/etc/magic).

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Advanced installation procedures

Note that the Maya Unlimited 4.5 software is selected by default. Turn it offif you are installing Maya Complete and you want to save space.

Using inst without promptsIf you are familiar with inst, you can run it without prompts, especially ifyou want to run it as part of a batch script. However, it requires that allprerequisites have been installed and that there is sufficient disk space.

See “Installing Maya on many machines at once” on page 17 for informationon using inst in a batch script.

To install using inst without prompts:

1 Log into the target machine as root.

2 Load the CD on the target machine or a remote machine with a CD-ROMdrive.

3 From a UNIX shell, enter:

/usr/sbin/inst -a -f dist -V startup_script:execute

where dist is the location of the images, such as /CDROM/dist or a remotemachine path.

4 Once the Maya software is successfully installed, you can proceed toChapter 3, “Licensing Maya.”

ADVANCED INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

Complete the following procedures if you want to install Maya on a differentfile system, in a client/server configuration, or on many systems at one time.

Installing on file systems other than /usrBy default, Maya is installed in the /usr partition. If you want to installMaya on a different file system (due to lack of space), create a symbolic linkfrom /usr/aw/maya4.5 to that file system. For example, if your file systemwas called /freespace, you would enter the following commands beforeinstalling Maya:

su rootmkdir -p /freespace/aw/maya4.5

INSTALLING MAYA FOR IRIX

15

Page 16: INSTALLING MAYA 4.5 FOR IRIX - Unicampmartino/maya/pdf/reference... · 2004. 4. 20. · INSTALLING MAYA FOR IRIX 5 1 INTRODUCTION This book describes how to install and license Maya

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Advanced installation procedures

mkdir -p /usr/aw ln -s /freespace/aw/maya4.5 /usr/aw

When you install using this method, Software Manager may report there isinsufficient disk space even though you know there is sufficient space on/freespace. If this happens, enter the following command in the SoftwareManager’s Command Window:

set override_space_check true

This lets you install Maya on the other file system even though /usr is full.

Performing a client/server installationYou can install Maya in a client/server configuration. In this configuration, the full Maya software is installed on a server whose file system is NFS-mounted on each of the clients. The clients then have a minimal set ofsoftware installed locally for desktop and security purposes.

To install Maya in a client/server installation:

1 Install all Maya software on the server machine.

2 Install the Maya client software on each of the clients.

The selection file, maya4_x_client.sel, specifies what software should beinstalled on each client. This file is on the Maya CD under the dist directory.

3 Mount the Maya software directory /usr/aw/maya4.5 from the server toeach client /usr/aw/maya4.5 directory.

4 If you have SuperConductors installed (either from the Conductors CD ordownloaded from the Alias|Wavefront Web site), also mount the/usr/aw/userconfig directory on each client.

Note

We do not recommend a client/server configuration, because it has anegative impact on Maya’s performance. This is particularly a problem onslow networks. If you do choose to install in a client/server configuration,be sure to install the IRIX prerequisite software and patch sets on eachclient.

Page 17: INSTALLING MAYA 4.5 FOR IRIX - Unicampmartino/maya/pdf/reference... · 2004. 4. 20. · INSTALLING MAYA FOR IRIX 5 1 INTRODUCTION This book describes how to install and license Maya

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Advanced installation procedures

Installing Maya on many machines at onceIn order to install several machines simultaneously, you must create a batchscript that executes the inst utility without prompts. Before this type ofinstallation, make sure all prerequisite software and patches are installed, that there is enough disk space for the installation, and that there are noinstallation conflicts.

The key command that runs inst without prompts is:

/usr/sbin/inst -a -f dist -V startup_script:execute

where dist is the location of the dist directory (for example: /CDROM/dist).

To create and run a batch installation script:

1 Generate a file that contains a list of host names you want to install Maya on,one host name per line.

2 Ensure that the Maya distribution CD is accessible from each of the clients.NFS is the preferred method for doing this, but is not absolutely necessary.

3 Make sure that all the machines have the necessary IRIX prerequisites andpatches installed.

If inst detects any missing prerequisites, the program will stop and yourscript will break.

4 Create a script that logs into each host and executes this command:

/usr/sbin/inst -a -f dist -F dist/maya4_x.sel -V startup_script:execute

For example, if the file from step 1 was named hostlist and the distributionCD was located at master:/CDROM/dist, you could use this sh script:

for i in `cat hostlist`do

echo "Installing on host $i"rsh $i "/usr/sbin/inst -a -f master:/CDROM/dist \-F master:/CDROM/dist/maya4_x.sel -V

startup_script:executedone

(This script uses Bourne/Korn shell syntax. Make the appropriate changes ifyou use the C-shell).

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Mounting a CD-ROM drive

To install Maya client software on multiple machines in batch mode:

1 Substitute the following selection file name in the -F argument of the batchscript:

maya4_x_client.sel

2 You must also do the following:

• Use -Vstartup_script:ignore instead of -Vstartup_script:execute

• Specify an exact /CDROM/awdist6.X directory instead of /CDROM/dist

The following script shows an example for installing client-only software:

for i in `cat hostlist`do

echo "Installing on host $i"rsh $i "/usr/sbin/inst -a -f master:/CDROM/awdist6.5

\-F master:/CDROM/awdist6.5/maya4_x_client.sel \ -V startup_script:ignore

done

MOUNTING A CD-ROM DRIVE

If you experience problems because your CD-ROM drive is not mounted, follow these steps, for either a local or remote drive.

To mount a local CD-ROM drive:

1 Find the controller number and unit number for the drive by typing:

hinv | grep CD

The output of this command will be similar to:

CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0

In this example, the controller number is 0 and the unit number is 4.

Note

This example script installs the maya4_x.sel (normal or server) selectionfile. You can substitute maya4_x_client.sel to install client-only software.

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Mounting a CD-ROM drive

2 Use the controller number and unit number to form the device name for theCD-ROM drive. The device name is in the format:

/dev/scsi/sc#d#l0

where the number following sc is the controller number, the number thatfollows the next d is the unit number, and l0 is spelled with lowercase l andzero. For the previous example, the device name would be /dev/dsk/sc0d4l0.

3 If a CDROM directory does not exist, create it by typing:

mkdir /CDROM

4 Mount the CD-ROM drive as a directory. Type:

/etc/mount -t iso9660 /dev/scsi/sc#d#l0 /CDROM

where /dev/scsi/sc#d#l0 is the device name from step 2 and /CDROM is thedirectory you are mounting the CD-ROM drive to.

To mount a remote CD-ROM drive across a network with NFS:

These instructions assume you have NFS on both workstations.

1 On the remote machine, make sure the drive is mounted.

2 On the remote machine, add the file system to the exports list to allow yourtarget machines to use the CD-ROM drive.

Using a text editor, add /CDROM to the /etc/exports file.

3 On the remote machine, type /usr/etc/exportfs -a to allow other machines inthe network to access the file system. This command requires NFS.

4 On the target machine, if a CD-ROM directory does not exist, create it bytyping:

mkdir /cdrom

In this example, we use /cdrom. You can use another name for the directory ifyou prefer.

5 On the target machine, mount the CD-ROM drive as a directory. Type:

/etc/mount hostname:/CDROM /cdrom

where hostname is the name of the machine that has the CD-ROM drive.

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Installing the Maya Shader Library

Accessing a remote CD-ROMThere are several ways to access a remote CD-ROM drive. We recommendhaving the CD-ROM drive auto-mounted. If you do not have this capability, here are some other typical methods:

Local mount point using NFS

If you followed the instructions “To mount a remote CD-ROM drive across anetwork with NFS:” on page 19, you simply specify that mount point duringthe installation. We recommend using lowercase /cdrom as the local mountdirectory, because uppercase /CDROM can cause installation problems.

Trusted user account

If you do not have NFS, you can still access a remote drive during theinstallation by specifying a trusted account on the remote machine. Forexample, in the Software Manager or inst from command, type:

root@host:/CDROM/dist

where host is the name of a remote machine with trusted-root access. If theremote computer does not have trusted-root access, you can use an accountthat does not have a password. For example:

guest@host:/CDROM/dist

INSTALLING THE MAYA SHADER LIBRARY

After installing Maya, you can install the Maya Shader Library, which is acollection of Maya scene files consisting of over 60 shading networks, including materials and file textures. To use the Shader Library, you can:

• run it from your local machine

• run it from the server

Important

We use /cdrom (lowercase) as the local mount directory instead of/CDROM (uppercase). Using uppercase /CDROM as the local mountdirectory of a remote CD-ROM drive can cause installation problems.

INSTALLING MAYA | 2Installing the Maya Shader Library

• run it from the CDROM

In order to run it from your local machine, you have to copy the entireshaderLibrary directory and its contents to your computer. For example, youcan copy it to /usr/aw/shaderLibrary. If multiple users will be accessingthis library, put it in a location in which all of the users have read access.

We recommend that you update each user’s Maya environment file or .cshrcfile so that Maya knows where you’ve stored the Shader Library. You shouldalso set up a Shader Library tab in Hypershade.

To install the Maya Shader Library:

1 Insert the Maya 4.5 Installation CD.

2 Start an IRIX shell.

3 Log in as root.

4 Type the following:

cd /CDROMcp -pr shaderLibrary /usr/aw

To update the Maya.env file or the .cshrc file:

In the user’s maya.env file set the following environment variable (forexample):

setenv MAYA_SHADER_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/aw/shaderLibrary

or

In the user’s .cshrc file set the following environment variable (for example):

setenv MAYA_SHADER_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/aw/shaderLibrary

Note

Alternatively, you can access the Shader Library from the CDROM or copythe shaderLibrary directory to another location in your own homedirectory and set the following variables accordingly.

3 LICENSING MAYA

This chapter describes how to license Maya. You must install Maya licensesif you are:

• installing Maya for the first time

• upgrading to a higher version of Maya

• adding additional licenses to a floating-type license

• changing the machine on which Maya is installed

LICENSING WORKFLOW

At the end of the software installation, the installKey Licensing Tool windowshould appear displaying the location of the encrypted license in the Inputfile text box. Click Install.

If you’re an existing Alias|Wavefront customer, the required licenses shouldhave been installed for you. A message tells you if the licenses wereinstalled. If they weren’t, but you have Internet access, you can check theREADME_lic file found in the LicenseMaya directory in the top level of theMaya 4.5 Software CD. This readme file contains instructions fordownloading and accessing the most up-to-date encrypted license file fromour Web site.

If you are a new Alias|Wavefront customer, or if you need to obtain newlicenses, you must first send Alias|Wavefront a completed SPAR form. See“Obtaining a license” on page 24. In response to your SPAR form, we sendyou an e-mail, fax, or mail containing the license information. Once youreceive the license, you save the license in a temporary file, then run theAlias|Wavefront license install program to insert the license into thepermanent license file. See “Installing licenses” on page 25.

LICENSING MAYA | 3License overview

LICENSE OVERVIEW

You can purchase and install node-locked or floating licenses.

• A node-locked license lets users run the software only on the machine whereyou install the license.

• A floating license lets users run the software on any machine on the samenetwork. For example, if you install five licenses on your network, up to fivemachines or users on the network can run the licensed software at one time.Floating licenses involve a license server machine that serves licenses toclient machines.

Your license is basically a string of text that Alias|Wavefront provides thatresides within a license file. Whenever a Maya session is launched, thelicense management software, FLEXlm, searches the license file to check outa license for that session.

Changes made by licensingThe licensing process adds your new Maya 4.5 license text to the bottom ofthe license file (either /var/flexlm/aw.dat or /var/flexlm/aw_servername.dat, where servername is the name of your machine server). The process leaves all other licenses intact, including licenses for previousversions of Maya.

OBTAINING A LICENSE

To obtain your license, you must send a request to Alias|Wavefront withyour machine information and the products you wish to license. Followthese instructions for each node-locked or license server machine.

To obtain a license:

1 Type the following command to find your computer’s unique identifier:

/usr/aw/COM/bin/getid

The getid command is a utility installed with Maya that returns machineinformation. For example:

Getid number: 87978513790030

To install the licenses:

1 You should have already obtained a license from Alias|Wavefront. If not, refer to “Obtaining a license” on page 24.

You don’t need to understand the contents of the license to do thisprocedure. For details, see “Understanding licenses” on page 45.

2 Log in as root.

3 Change to the following directory:

cd /usr/aw/COM/bin

4 Type the following command (note the capital K):

./installKey

5 Cut and paste the license you received from Alias|Wavefront into theinstallKey window. If you received the license via fax, carefully type thelicense in; the license won’t work if you have made a typing error.

6 If your organization uses a non-default filename for the license file, click theAdvanced button to specify the path and filename. (Most customers use thedefault filename.)

7 Click Install.

Note

If you store your license file somewhere other than the default location, then you need to point Maya to this in the maya.env file by updating theMAYA_ALT_EN variable. For details, see Using Maya: Essentials.

The installKey program installs licenses into the default Alias|Wavefrontlicense file. For node-locked licenses, the default file is: /var/flexlm/aw.dat.For floating licenses, the default file is: /var/flexlm/aw_servername.dat,where servername is the machine name of the license server.

The installKey program doesn’t remove prior licenses, but it might commentout license information that is superseded by the new license.

8 Keep a copy of the license information file provided by Alias|Wavefront incase you need to install the licenses again.

9 Either complete the floating license setup instructions or, for node-locked,continue with “Starting Maya” on page 31.

INSTALLING IRIX 6.5 FLOATING LICENSE SOFTWARE

If you are installing floating licenses and the license server machine runsIRIX 6.5.12 or higher, you must first install the software to run the FLEXlmfloating license server. Follow these steps.

To check for FLEXlm license server software:

First check to see if you already have the needed software installed.

1 Type the following at the command line:

versions | grep flexlm_server

2 Look for a return message similar to the following:

I license_eoe.sw.flexlm_server 09/20/2002 FLEXlm 8.1a Server Software

If you see this message, you already have the FLEXlm software and do notneed to install it.

3 If you do not see any message, continue with the following steps.

Note

If you receive an error message, examine the log file /usr/tmp/InstallKey.log.Also see “Troubleshooting licensing problems” on page 35.

LICENSING MAYA | 3Starting Maya

STARTING MAYA

After you install Maya, log out, then log back in. Launch Maya to confirminstallation.

To start Maya:

• In an IRIX shell, type maya

or

• Double-click the Maya icon on the desktop. The Maya icon is in theAlias|Wavefront section of the Icon Catalog. You access it from the Findmenu of the desktop Toolchest.

If Maya does not start, check the Console window for error messages. SeeChapter 4, “Troubleshooting” for possible solutions.

LIMITING USE OF MAYA PRODUCT LICENSES

Some users on your network might not need to use all Maya featuresavailable to them. You can control access to licenses for specific users toensure that those who need them have them on demand. (Maya Cloth has asimilar feature called simulation licenses; see Appendix B, “Cloth Licenses”in Using Maya: Cloth.)

Use a combination of the following MAYA_LICENSE environment variablesettings and user-specified Maya command line options.

Note

You can use an IP Address instead of the name of the server if you plan torun your license across different platforms. For example, a license filenamed aw_myserver.dat on a client machine that’s referencing the IPaddress would look like this:

SERVER 10.0.0.10 690c5c73 7111USE_SERVER

LICENSING MAYA | 3Limiting use of Maya product licenses

Example

Suppose your network has several Maya Complete licenses, but only oneMaya Unlimited license. To prevent unwanted users from using the oneMaya Unlimited license, add the following line to the startup file (.cshrc,.profile, or .login) of each unwanted user:

setenv MAYA_LICENSE complete

Sometimes, a user may need to use Maya Unlimited temporarily. Instead ofediting the startup file, you can inform the user to start Maya with thefollowing command, which overrides the startup setting:

maya -lic=unlimited

Other considerations

• If you repeat a command option or MAYA_LICENSE setting, Maya uses thesetting last made.

• A command line option takes precedence over a conflicting environmentvariable setting.

• To see which licenses are checked out, enter the following command from anIRIX shell:

lmstat -a -c /var/flexlm/aw_servername.dat

where servername is the name of the license server.

MAYA_LICENSEsetting

Maya commandoption

Effect on Maya

complete -lic=complete Runs Maya Complete

unlimited -lic=unlimited Runs Maya Unlimited

Note

If Maya license is set to Complete and there are no Complete licensesavailable, even if there are Unlimited licenses, the software will not run,but will display a “No Licenses Available” message.

lmdiagThe lmdiag tool diagnoses problems when a license checkout fails. You canuse it for node-locked or floating licenses. lmdiag first prints informationabout the license. It then attempts to check out each license. If the checkout issuccessful, lmdiag notifies the user; if not, lmdiag gives the reasons why thecheckout failed.

The format of lmdiag is:

lmdiag -n -c /var/flexlm/LicenseFile FeatureName

lmstat

Checking for floating licensing errors

The lmstat tool reports the status of the license manager daemons andfeature usage. It provides information about the status of the server nodes, vendor daemons, vendor FEATURES and users of each FEATURE. lmstat isonly useful for checking floating license errors. You must run lmstat on thelicense server machine.

To use lmstat:

1 At any UNIX prompt, type the command:

lmstat -a -c /var/flexlm/aw_servername.dat -f FeatureName

-n Runs lmdiag in non-interactive mode.

-c LicenseFile Specifies the license file to diagnose.

FeatureName Specifies which feature to diagnose. If you do notspecify a feature name, lmdiag diagnoses all features inthe file.

3 For the line that starts with License server status, make sure that the correctpath to the license file is listed. If it is not the correct path, make sure that thelicense file exists in the /var/flexlm/ directory, and make sure that the name ofthe server machine is correct. If you are unsure of the name, type at theprompt:

/usr/bsd/hostname

and press Return. This should list the name of the machine in use.

4 The next line of status information shows if the license server is UP. If it isnot UP, the error message printed is:

TROUBLESHOOTING | 4Stopping and starting the license server

If the aw_servername.dat file has a typing error, you’ll see something similarto this example:

Users of MayaUnltdf: (Error: 3 licenses, unsupported by licensed server)

Check aw_servername.dat for a typing error.

8 If doing the preceding procedure doesn’t fix the problem, call our SupportServices department and keep the information from the preceding stepshandy.

STOPPING AND STARTING THE LICENSE SERVER

To stop and start the license server:

1 Log on as root. First check that you have the aw_flexlm script installed in the/etc/init.d/ directory. It also checks whether the script is turned on:

/etc/chkconfig -f aw_flexlm on

2 Stop the lmgrd daemon by entering the following command:

/etc/init.d/aw_flexlm stop

If the server was ON previously, the command issues some statusinformation. An example of this status information is:

lmdown - Copyright (C) 1989-1997 Globetrotter Software, Inc.Shut down FLEXlm server on node servername 1 FLEXlm License Server shut down

where servername is the name of the server machine.

or

If the server is already OFF, the command will issue an error messagesimilar to:

lmdown - Copyright (C) 1989-1997 Globetrotter Software, Inc.Connection to "servername" failed: Cannot connect to license server(-15,12:146) Connection refused

where servername is the name of the server machine. You can ignore thiserror message.

UNDERSTANDING LICENSES

This section explains the contents of the license Alias|Wavefront sends you.

Node-locked licensesIf you order node-locked licenses, you receive one license for every machine. The contents of the e-mail, fax, or mail depends on the Maya package youorder. The following figure shows the main elements of a node-lockedlicense:

Feature Name—is the Maya product package you purchased.

License Version—shows the version number of the Maya package.

Tip

If you see a line near the top of your license that starts with SERVER,you’re installing floating licenses. Otherwise, you’re installing node-lockedlicenses.

TROUBLESHOOTING | 4Understanding licenses

Expiration—shows when the license expires. The word “permanent” meansthere is no expiration date. Product evaluation licenses have actualexpiration dates.

License Count—node-locked licenses do not have a license count.

Password—is an encryption string that prevents copyright infringement.

Vendor String—indicates you have a timed-out, evaluation, or educationallicense. If not present, it means that you have a purchased, permanentlicense.

Host ID—is the hostid of the machine to be licensed.

Floating licensesIf you order floating licenses, you receive a single license for the licenseserver computer. The contents of the e-mail, fax, or mail you receivedepends on the Maya features you order.

The following figure lists the main elements of the floating license:

Server—is a placeholder where you must insert your actual server name.

Server Host ID—is the server’s lmhostid. See “lmhostid” on page 40.

Port Number—is a fixed number that represents the TCP port usedinternally by the licensing software.

Feature Name—is the Maya product package you purchased.

License Version—shows the version number of the software.
