Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Introduction 3
Introduction
Description of UnitThese kits add small seeds planting capability to manyGreat Plains 7-foot and 10-foot end-wheel drills.
These kits also replace an older kit (before July 1991),and may be used to upgrade drills with the previoussmall seeds components. The kit drive is independent ofmain seed rate, and unaffected by changes to main seedbox Drive Type.
Compatible DrillsBefore ordering or installing a kit, check the serial num-ber plate on the drill against both of the following tables. The drill product number prefix must be one in the firsttable (at right). The specific kit required (from the secondtable) depends on drill width, row spacing, and whetherfertilizer or Native Grass is also installed.
Available Kits
Each kit updates one drill.

Installation Instructions
Before You StartMost accidents are the result of negligence and care-lessness, usually caused by failure of the operator to fol-low simple but necessary safety precautions. Allow noone to install the small seeds attachment before carefullyreading this manual.
Due to evolving manufacturing practices, some sub-assemblies may already be completely pre-assembled. Ifso, check that fasteners are tight, and skip the unneededassembly steps.
Tools Required• Basic hand tools, including hose clamp pliers
• Updated Parts Manual for the drill
• Drill and common fractional bit sizes, including 3⁄8in
• Silicone sealant, weatherproof tape, or short 1⁄4-20fasteners for plugging box holes.
• Scaffold or ladder
• Two people for attaching seed box (3 preferred)
Torque values for fasteners are shown on page 36.
1. Ensure drill is compatible with kit. See page 3.
2. Read and understand “Important Safety Informa-tion” starting on page 1.
Prepare Drill3. If the drill to be updated has a Fertilizer box, clean
out the box per the instructions in the current drillOperator Manual.
4. Position the drill in a well lighted location suitable forthe installation. A clear surface beneath makes iteasier to recover any dropped parts.
5. Lower the drill.
Dismount SMV Reflector
Refer to Figure 36. Remove the fasteners securing the existing SMV
reflector to the rear of the main seed box. Save thereflector and fasteners. It is re-mounted on a newwalkboard extension at step 86.
7. Plug the previous mounting holes with silicone seal-ant, weatherproof tape, or short 1⁄4-20 fasteners.

Update Clutch ShaftThe existing clutch shaft is updated with a third sprocketfor Small Seeds. The clutch shaft is located at the front ofthe main seed box, below the gearbox or transmission.
If you have a late model drill, you may already have aSmall Seeds drive sprocket installed.
Refer to Figure 48. Inspect the existing clutch shaft .
If it has a 3⁄16in diameter hole about 22in from theright end of the shaft, continue at step 9.
If the shaft already has an unused 15T sprocketmounted at this location, continue at “Seed BoxMounting” on page 7.
If you have a very early model drill, it may not havethe pin hole for the sprocket. Have your dealer con-tact the factory regarding a replacement shaft.
9. Carefully note the location of all existing bearings, sprockets, spacers and gears.
Note: In addition to the detail in Figure 12 on page 12,digital or instant photography may prove usefulduring reassembly. It is suggested lines be scribedon the shaft to mark the exact location of eachremoved or loosened part.
10. Remove only enough existing parts to allow placinga new sprocket and retainers on that portion of theshaft.
Install Small Seeds Clutch Sprocket11. Select one new:
808-098C SPKT 40 B 15 X 1 BOREand two new:
805-080C PIN ROLL 1/8 X 1LG. PLT.

Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Operations 17
Operations
Loading SeedSmall Seed may be loaded in the field or prior to trans-port.
The drill must be hitched for seed loading. The main-frame may be raised or lowered. Lowered places thewalkboards closer to the ground, reducing effort whenmanually loading bagged seed.
Small Seeds Box Loading1. If loading prior to transport, and calibration has not
yet been done, set Seed Rate Handles to 0. At 0, noseed can leak from the Small Seeds box duringtransport.
2. Take all necessary materials safety precautions ifthe seed is treated.
3. Load seed evenly into seed boxes.
4. To reduce wear, remove main shaft drive chains formain seed boxes, and fertilizer, if not used.
Note: Small Seeds do not require seed lubricant.
Small Seeds RateSeeding rate from the optional Small Seeds Attachmentis controlled entirely by seed rate handles on each smallseeds box. No sprocket changes are required, and smallseeds rate is unaffected by settings for main seed andfertilizer boxes.
Refer to Figure 19To set Small Seeds rate, loosen the wing nut at thehandle, and adjust the lever position. Move it higherthan the desired setting by about 10, then return it to thedesired setting. Tighten nut.
Field OperationsThe Small Seeds box operates in the same manner asthe main seed box. The drive system is activated by theclutch when the drill is lowered.

Small Seeds Rate CalibrationDifferences will exist between the tested seed and fieldconditions used to generate the Small Seeds RateCharts, and your seed and conditions. To accuratelyachieve your target population, Great Plains recom-mends calibrating.
Perform the calibration with the drill lowered to plantingposition (if the openers are raised, the clutch disen-gages). Leave the tractor hitched for movement control.Block the tires not being used in the calibration.
1. Jack up the left drive gauge wheel. Use blocks toensure that the drill cannot fall if the jack relaxes, tipsover or fails.
2. Rotate the gauge wheels and check that the drivesand seed cups are engaged, working properly andfree from foreign material. If not already done, setthe Small Seeds Rate Handle. If fertilizer is loaded, remove the fertilizer drive chain (unless you aresimultaneously calibrating fertilizer rate).
3. Check that your gauge-wheel tires are the correctsize for the drill and properly inflated. See “Tire Infla-tion Chart” in Operator Manual.
4. Record the weight of one to three empty containerscollectively large enough to hold seed metered.
5. Place several pounds of seed over three seed cupson the outside end of the drill box. Pull lower endseed hoses off of these drops at the opener end.
6. Turn gauge wheel several times to fill seed cups.Turn until seed drops to ground from each hose.
7. Place empty container(s) under the three hoses togather metered seed.
8. Turn gauge wheel until one acre is tallied on acreme-ter (see Operator Manual for your drill). While turn-ing, check that cups have ample seed coming intothem.
9. Weigh metered seed. Subtract initial weight of con-tainer(s).
! WARNINGYou may be severely injured or killed by being crushed from afalling implement or openers. Always have transport locks inplace and frame sufficiently blocked up when working on thedrill.
For example: 1005NT-1575 drillusing a row spacing of:7.5in
row count:15
you desire to plant alfalfa at:10 pounds per acre;
this corresponds to an initial Seed Rate Handle of:50
For example:three 5.7oz (0.356 pound) containers weigh:1.07 lbs
For example:the three containers weighed a total 3.17 lbs after test:2.1 lbs net
NetWeight GrossWeight ContainerWeights–=
2.1 3.17 1.07–=
123-535M 06/02/2008
Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Operations 19
10. Divide the net seed weight by three. Multiply by num-ber of openers on your drill to determine the total ofpounds-per-acre seeded.
11. The Seed Rate Handle scale is a percentage ofmeter opening, and is quite linear near scale center.Calculate a new scale setting based on the test.
Note: If operating near scale extremes, do not calculate acorrection factor. Instead use the rate error to moveleft or right in the chart to a new rate, and the usescale setting for that rate.
Note: You may want to repeat calibration procedure ifyour results varied greatly from the Seed RateChart, or if you must operate near the ends of theSeed Rate handle scale (0-20 or 90-100).
12. With calibration complete, reinstall fertilizer chain (ifremoved, and fertilizer to be applied), reconnectseed hoses, and lower gauge wheel to ground.
When drilling, check seeding rate by noting acres drilled, amount of seed added to drill and seed level in drill box.If you are seeding more or less than desired, adjust rateslightly to compensate for field conditions.
For example:a 7.5in drill has 15 rows:10.5 lbs/ac

Small Seeds Row Shut-Off
Refer to Figure 20If alternate row spacing is required for small seeds, optional plugs are available to block flow inside the seedbox tray.
1. Cleanout seed. The seed box must be empty prior toinserting plugs. See “Small Seeds Box Cleanout”on page 23.
2. Before installing plugs, inspect the seed boxes forexisting factory-installed plugs. These are blockingextra unused seed ports. You may want to identifythese plugs with an indelible marker.
3. Insert one plug at each row to shut off. Verify theseed hose path before inserting the plug, as somehoses do not make a strictly vertical drop to their rowunits.
4. Review seed rate settings and marker extensionprior to planting.
When removing plugs to restore rows to operation, besure to not disturb a factory-installed plug.

Maintenance
Small Seeds Box Cleanout1. Open lid of each box and scoop out as much seed as
possible.
2. To recover remaining seed, place a collection tarpunder the small seeds tubes at the openers.
3. Raise drill.
4. Set seed rate handles to 100.
5. Rotate gauge wheels until no seed flows.
6. If a vacuum cleaner is available, remove any residualseed from top of meters.
Chain MaintenanceInspect and lubricate chains regularly. The slack of newchains tends to increase during the first few hours ofoperation due to seating.
Chain SlackCheck slack within the first 8 hours of operation andadjust idlers as necessary.
Refer to Figure 21, which, for clarity, greatly exaggeratesslack, and omits the idlers.1. Measure the span for allowable slack:
Locate the longest span of each chain (usually thespan which does not run through the idlers). Theideal slack is between 2% and 4% of the span. For example:A slack of 1⁄2in is appropriate for a 17in span.
2. Measure the current slack :Acting at a right angle to the chain span at the centerof the span, deflect the chain in both directions with aforce of about 9 lbs (4 kg). The slack is the distanceof the movement.
3. Adjust the idlers for ideal slack.
Whenever mounting a chain, make sure the clip at theremovable link is oriented to minimize snags.
Refer to Figure 22Install clip with open end facing away from direction ofchain travel (shown by gray arrows in chain routing dia-grams).
