  • Congratulations, Youhavejustpurchasedthefinestwood/coalboileravailable.HarmanTridentboilersareconstructedofhighqualitymaterialsandaremanufacturedbyahighlyskilledteamofassemblymen.Eachboilerisinspectedandpressuretestedforqualityassurance.

    Thismanualisdesignedtoprovideallofthebasicinformationneededforasafeandproperinstallation.However,therearemanyskillsneededthatcannotbelearnedbyreadingthismanual.HarmanStoveCompanyrecommendsthattheinstallationbeperformedbyaplumbingandheatingexpert.

    TheHarmanTridentBoilersaredesignedtooperatesafe,easyandautomatically.Youmayhowever,needtolearnafewbasicskillstomaintainafire.Especiallyifthisisyourfirstventureintosolidfuelburning.Ifyouhaveanyproblems,re-readtheseinstructions.Ifyoucannotresolvetheissue(s),ContactyourHarmanStovedealer.

  • InstallationGetting Started Thesheetmetalsidesandtopareeasilyremovedtoreducethechanceofdentsand/orscratchesinthefinish.Simplyliftthetopoff,andthatwillallowthesidestobepulledawayandup,forremoval.Tore-install,slidethechannel,atthebottomofeachsidepiece,overthelipatthebot-tomoftheboiler,andholddownwardwhilemov-ing the side panel into place. Then slide the top downoverthesides.

    NOTE:Thesheetmetaltopholdsthesidesinplace,thus,noboltsorscrewsareneeded.

    Caution: Boiler should not Be installed Closer than 36 inChes (915 mm) to any ComBustiBle ma-terial

    Locating Boiler Placetheboilerasclosetothechimneyaspossible,whilestillmaintainingtheabovemen-tionedclearances.Bolttheshakerhandleontotheblockonthesideoftheboiler,usingthe(2)5/16X3/4in.boltsandlock-washers.Assembly InstalltheTemperature/PressureGaugeintothepipestubinthecenteroftheroundplateonthefrontoftheboiler(FIG.1) InstalltheA350sensorwireallthewayintotheimmersionwellandscrewthewellintooneofthetopholesonthefaceoftheboiler. Turnthepressurereliefvalveintothestubontopoftheboiler,nexttothesupplyoutletfit-ting.NOTE: Use teflon tape to seal the threads on all fittings. Any unused fittings must be plugged. Boltthetwomanualdraftcontrolsthrough the holes in the top load door. (FIG.2) Thedraftcontrolknobshouldspinfreelyandopentoadistanceofapproximately3/8in.fromthedoorsurface,whilebeingabletocloseagainstthe door surface.

  • BolttheAutomaticDraftControlthroughthe1/2in.holeinthecenterofthebottomdoor.BesuretoholdtheDraftControlstraightwhiletightening.Feedthetwowiresfromthedraftmo-torthroughtheflexibleconduitanda90˚fitting.Securethefittingtothedraftmotorandthatendoftheconduitatthistime.ChecktheflapperdoorontheAutomaticDraftControlassuringthatitmovesfreely. Installthe(3)brasscoilspringhandlesontothedoorlatchesandtheshakerhandle.Startthespringhandleontotheshaftandtwistitcoun-ter-clockwisewhilepushing.

    Aquastat Installation (See optional items, page 7) Lay the din rail onaflatsurface,withtheflatsidedown.Secureoneendclamp,ontheleftside.SlidetheA350controllerontotherailfromrighttoleftuntilitisagainsttheendclamp.SlidetheY350ontotherail and guide the plug-in connector, joining it to the A350. Next, install the S350, again, guiding the plug-in connector carefully. Install the other endclamptotherightsideofthedinrail.Removethecoversfromallthreecontrolsbylooseningfourscrewseach.Installtheterminalboxtothecontrolsusing(3)chasenipplesandlocknuts,suppliedwiththekit.Usingthefourholesintheterminalbox,mounttheterminalboxandcontrolstotheboilersheetmetalsideasshowninFig.1.Using(2)#8-32nuts,installtheterminalblockontothestudslocatedinsidetheterminalbox.

  • Wiring and Electrical Followingthewiringdiagram,runallwirestotheirdesignatedconnections.Savethemainpowerforthelasthook-up,andleavethebreakerintheoffposition.ThesensorwiresattachtotheA350Controllerontheterminalsmarked“sen”and“com”.Makesurethesensorissubmergedfullyintothewellandsecuredwiththeset-screws.Setting The Aquastat InsidetheA350control,youwillseeasquarejumper,andadifferentialdial.Besurethejumperisinthe“Heating”position.Thedifferen-tialdialissettodeterminehowlow,belowthetemperaturesetpoint,youwantthewatertem-peraturetogobeforetheAutomaticDraftControlopens.Agoodinitialsettingforthisdialis5°.Besurethe120Vwiresareattachedtothecommonandthenormallyopenterminals,andreplacethecover.Theexternaldialissetforthewatertem-peratureyouwishtomaintain,agoodsettingis180°. Inside the Y350 control, ensure that your wiresareconnectedtothe120VACterminals,and replace the cover. InsidetheS350control,whichisusedasoverheatprotection,you’llseetwodials;offset,anddifferential.Thereisalsoajumperwhich,inthiscase,getsplacedinthe“cooling”position.TheoffsetdialsetsthenumberofdegreesabovetheA350setpointthatyouwanttheoverheatdumptoactivate.Agoodsetpointwouldbe20°.Thatwouldmeanthatifthewaterreaches200°,usingtheA350setpointof180°,theS350wouldclose it’s contacts and energize the overheat dumpzone.Thedifferentialdialsetsthepointthattheoverheatdumpwouldstop.Withthedifferen-tialsetat15°,usingthetemperaturesabove,thecircuitwouldre-open,stoppingtheoverheatdumpatawatertemperatureof185°.The120Vwiringisattachedonthenormallyopenandthecommonposition.Thenormallyclosedpositionisnotused. Re-install the covers onto the three Con-trols.

    Optional Items Thereisadomestichotwatercoilavailablefor your Trident Boiler. The coil installs in the front oftheboiler,andallowsyourdomesticwatertobeheatedbytheheatingsystemwater.Installthecoilnow,byremovingtheroundplateandreplac-ingitwiththecoilandit’sroundplate.Besuretotightentheboltsevenly,toensureagoodseal. Ifelectricback-upisdesired,installnow.Therewillbetwoadditionalcontrolboxestoaddtoyouraquastat,whichwillrequiretheuseofalongerdinrail.ThetwoheatingelementswillinstallintothefrontoftheboilerasshowninFig.1

    Venting TheHarmanTridentBoilermustbein-stalledintoachimneyapprovedforsolidfuelburningappliances.IntheU.S.,theboilermustbeconnectedto;(1)aprefabricatedchimneycomply-ingwiththerequirementsforTypeHTchimneysintheStandardforChimneys,FactoryBuilt,Resi-dential Type and Building Heating Appliances, UL 103.Or;(2)acodeapprovedmasonrychimneywithaflueliner.InCanada,withprefabricatedchimneysystemstestedandlistedtotheHighTemperatureChimneyStandardULCS-629,orwithacodeapprovedmasonrychimney.Theminimumrecommendedheightforanychimneyis16ft.(4.8m)abovethefluecollar.Donotre-ducefluediameter.Nominalsizeflueis8X8in.or equivalent, up to 8 X 12 in.     3feet(0.9m)abovethepointatwhichtheyexitfromtheroof,itmustalsoextend2feet(0.6m)abovethehighestpointwithina10ft.(3m)radius.

    DO NOT CONNECT THIS uNIT TO A CHImNEy fLuE THAT IS SErVING ANOTHEr AppLIANCE.

    Limitconnectorpipeto8ft.orless,withnomorethantwoelbows.Allhorizontalsectionsshouldhave1/4in.riseperfoot.Thechimneymustbecapableofprovidingadraftreadingofatleast.06in.ofwatercolumn.Abarometricdampercanbeinstalledtopreventexcessiveanderraticdraft.Allconnectorpipeshouldbesecuredwithsheetmetalscrewsateachjoint.

    Installationplumbing TheHarmanTridentBoilercanbeusedasa“StandAlone”boilerorasanadd-ontoanexist-inghotwaterheatingsystem. Thediagramsinthismanualaremeanttoshowthenecessaryequipmentandpiping.Yoursystemmaylookverydifferent.However,ifconfig-uredproperly,thesameresultswillbeachieved. Fig.6showsatypicalplumbingdiagramfortyingintoanexistingsystem.Thismethodprovideswatercirculationbetweenthetwoboilerswithacirculatingpump.Inthissetup,thedomes-ticwatercoilintheexistingboilerwillbeheated,makingitunnecessarytoinstallawatercoilintheTrident Boiler. Tying-intoanexistingboilermustbedoneinthereturnlinebetweenthecirculatorandtheexistingboiler.Runapipefromtheretoasmallcirculator,andthenintothe1-1/4in.fittingontherearoftheTridentBoiler.Nextrunapipefromthe1-1/4in.fittingonthetopoftheTridentBoilertoaTeefittinginthesupplylineoftheexistingboiler.ThisTeefittingmustbeinstalledbetweentheex-istingboilerandtheFlowControlValve,asshowninFig.6.Anairvalveshouldbeinstalledonthisline also.

  • Thecirculatorinstalledbetweenthetwoboilersmaybehookeduptoruncontinuouslyduringtheheatingseasonor,anadditionalS350control(notsupplied)couldbeinstalledtoturnitonandoffautomatically.Thiscontrolmustbeusedasa“closeonriseoftemperature”(jumperincoolingposi-tion). HarmanStoveCompanyrecommendsthat1-1/4in.pipebeusedbetweenthetwoboilers.AlsorecommendedisthatthefirstsectionofpipeoffofthetopoftheTridentBoilerbethreadedgalvanizedorthreadedblack-steelpipe. TheHarmanTridentBoilerissuppliedwithadualfunctionaquastat.TheA350isusedtocontroltheautomaticdraftcontrolwhetheropen,toincreaseheat,orclosed,todecreaseheat.TheS350isusedasoverheatprotection.Sinceawoodorcoalfireisstillproducingheatwhenthedraftisclosed,thisoverheatprotectionisrequired.YoucouldhavetheS350energizeacirculatingpumporazonevalveseparatefromtheheatingsystem,oritcouldbehookedupsothatitflowstheheatedwaterthroughoutthesystem.Eitherway,itmustbeabletoflowawayfromtheboiler. Figure7showsatypicalschematicoftheTridentboilerasa“standalone”system.Note;thecrossoverpipe(#12)isnottotallynecessarybutisrecommendedtoprovidecirculationwithintheboilerwhiletheheatingsystemissatisfied.Thiswillensureaneventemperaturewithintheboiler.Thetemperingvalveshown(#10)istopreventexcessivetemperatureofthedomesticwater.

    OperationAutomatic Draft Control Theheatoutputisregulatedbytheauto-maticdraftcontrolonthebottomdoor.Theelectricmotor(A)opensandclosestheflapperdoor(B).Openingandclosingtheflapperdoorregulatestheairflowintothefirebox. Themaximumairflowcanbeadjustedbyturningtheadjustingbolt(C).Turncounter-clockwiseformoreair,andclockwiseforlessair.Adjustthisboltonlywhiletheflapperdoorisintheclosedposition.Otherwise,motordamagecouldoccur. Theidleairadjuster(D)controlsthemini-mumamountofairthatentersthefirebox.Adjust-mentismadebyturningtheadjusterverticalforzeroidleair,orhorizontalformaximumidleair.ItisbesttostartoutwithamediumsettingasshowninFigure9.

    Starting a Wood fire Makesuretheboilerandallpipingisfullofwaterandthatallairhasbeenpurgedfromthesystem.Never start a fire without water in the system. An explosion will occur. Turnonelectricalpowertotheboiler.Thisshouldcausetheautomaticdraftcontroltoopen.Opentheashpandoortoallowfreeairmove-ment.Withthefireboxdooropen,crumbleap-proximately8sheetsofnewspaperandplaceonthegrates.Laysomesmallkindlingontopofthenewspaper.Besurethiskindlingisdryandnomorethan3/4in.indiameter.Layerthekindlinginacriss-crosstypepattern,toallowmaximumairflow.Nextlaysomelargerpiecesofwoodontopofthekindling(approximately2in.diameter).Usingamatchorlighter,lightthepaperjustinsidethedoor.Closeandlatchthefireboxdoorandal-lowthefiretoburnafewminutes.Afteraboutfiveminutes,closetheashpandoorandre-openthefireboxdooraninchortwo,toallowthesmoketoclear.Add4or5largerlogs(about4in.diameter)tothewellestablishedfireandclosethefireboxdoor.Leavetheashpandooropenforaboutfiveminutesonly.Nowopenthefireboxdoorusingthesamemethodasbefore,alwaysclosingtheashpandoorbeforeopeningthefireboxdoor.Nowyoucanloadthefireboxtothedesiredlevel.Youmayloadwoodtothetopofthefirebox.Closeandlatchthedoor.Theashpandoormayagainbeopenedtospeedtheignitionprocess.Do not leave the boiler unattended with any door open. Afterthewoodisburningwell,closetheashpandoor.Theautomaticdraftcontrolwillnowregulatethefire,basedontemperaturedemand. Theidleairadjustermustbetunedtowherethefiredoesn’tgooutduringlongperiodswithnodemand.Experiencewilldictatethebestsettingforyourinstallation.Normally,thetwomanualdraftcontrolsonthefireboxdoorarekeptclosedwhileburningwood.

    OperationStarting a Coal fire Makesuretheboilerandallpipingisfullofwaterandthatallairhasbeenpurgedfromthesystem.Never start a fire without water in the system. An explosion will occur. Turnonelectricalpowertotheboiler.Thisshouldcausetheautomaticdraftcontroltoopen.Opentheashpandoortoallowfreeairmove-ment.Usethesameprocedureasstartingawoodfireexcept,donotloadthelargerdiameterwoodUsewoodabout2in.diametermaximum.Thissizewillformaveryhotcharcoalbedinlesstime.Again,theashpandoormaybeopenedperiodi-cally to speed the ignition process. DO NOT LEAVE THE BOILEr uNATTENDED WITH ANy DOOr OpEN. Whenyouhaveaccumulatedasubstantialcharcoalbed,startaddingathinlayerofcoal.PeaorNutsizedcoalisbetterforstartingthanStovecoal. Whenthefirstlayerisburningwithsomeblueflame,continuetoaddthinlayersofcoaluntilthereisasolidbedofburningcoal.Leteachlayerburnablueflamebeforeaddinganotherlayer.Ad-ditionalcoalcanbelayeredinuntilthebedisap-proximately10inchesdeep.Bynow,youshouldhavetheashpandoorclosed,andtheautomaticdraftcontrolwillcontinuetoregulatethefire. Theidleairadjustermayneedtobesetforslightlylessairforcoalthanwood.Hereagain,experiencewilldictatethebestsetting.Themaxi-mumairboltcanbeturnedalltheway“counter-clockwise”toallowforaquickerrecovery.Neveradjustthisboltwiththeflapperopen. Thetwomanualdraftcontrols,onthefireboxdoor,areusedtoallowsecondaryairtopassoverthefirewhenburningcoal.Thishelpstoburnthegassesthatareemittedfromthecoalas it is heated. Your setting for these draft controls shouldbebetween1/2and1completeturnfromclosed.Adjustbothcontrolsequally.

    Loading Coalshouldneverbeaddedunlessthereisareasonablyhotfire.Thecoalbedshouldbebrightandvigorous.Ifyouhaveanactivecoalbed,fullloadscanbeaddedatanytime.Ifnot,addnewcoalinlayers,asdescribedinstartingacoalfire.Shaking the Grates Shakingshouldbedoneonlywhenthereisawell-establishedfire.Thefrequencyofshak-ingwilldependonthedegreeofburning.Twiceadayshakingisrecommended.Thebestresultsareachievedwithshort,choppystrokesasop-posedtolong,evenstrokes.Fullrockingofthegratesmayallowburningcoaltofallintotheashpan.Theamountofshakingiscritical,toomuchcandisruptthefirebed,andtoolittlewillrestrictair-flow.Theproperamountofshakingisnormallyachievedwhenhotredcoalsfirststarttodropthrough the grates into the ash pan. Everyeffortshouldbemadetonotletacoalfireburndowntoolow.Thiswillcausethereloadingprocesstobemuchlonger,witharealgoodchanceoflosingthefirealtogether. Donotshakeorstirwithalowfire.Opentheashpandoortogetmaximumairflowingintothefirebox.Onceburningisrestored,closetheashpandoorandaddalayerofcoaltothefirebed.FollowtheinstructionsunderStartingaCoalFire.Whenthenewcoalisthoroughlyignited,andthereisasubstantialbedofhotcoals,thegratesmaythenbeshaken.Ashes and Ash removal Ashesshouldneverbeallowedtoaccu-mulateabovethetopoftheashpan.Ashesincontactwiththebottomofthegratesactasinsu-lation,whichintensifiestheheatonthegratesandcausesthemtosagorwarp.Also,toomuchashaccumulationwillrestrictair-flowwhichwillmakefiremaintenancemoredifficult.Placeashesinasealedmetalcontainer,outside,untiltheyarecooledenoughforfinaldisposal.Coalproducesconsiderablymoreashthanwood,sotheintervalsbetweenemptyingaremuchshorter.

    Safety Tips Whenopeningthefireboxdoor,itshouldbecracked,slightlyopen,forafewsecondstoallowairintoburnanygaseswhichmaybepresent.Thiswillalsoallowsmoketobedrawnawayfromthedoor.Whenevertheashpandoorisopen,itshouldbeclosedbeforeopeningthefireboxdoor.

    Thefireboxshouldneverbefilledwithexcessivecoaltowheretheflueexitisblockedorimpededinanyway.

    Burning coal produces Carbon monoxide. If the flue exit is blocked, the Carbon Monoxide can be forced out of the boiler, into the room, with possible fATAL consequences. With the exception of start-up or freshening ofthefire,orperformingashremoval,theashpandoorshouldbekeptclosed.

    NeverinstallaHarmanTridentBoilerintoachimneywithahistoryofdown-drafts.

    Keep Children Away-- may Cause Seri-ous Burns.

    CAuTION: All surfaces of the boiler are hot. Do not touch. Keep children away. Serious burns will result if touched. This is a heat producing appliance.

    DANGEr: fire Hazard, Do not use chemicals or flammable liquids to start or “freshen-up” a fire. Severe burns or a house fire may result. Do not burn Garbage, Gasoline, Thinners, Oil, Kero-sene Etc. An explosion, a house fire or serious personal injury could result. Keep all such liquids well away from this boiler.

    Duringthefirstfewhoursofburning,abluesmokemaybeobservedrisingfromtheboiler.This is the paint going through the curing process. Itisadvisabletoincreasetheamountoffreshairintheroomduringthisbreakinperiod.Thiscanbeachievedbyopeningdoorsandwindows.Don’tbealarmed,thisisnormalandwillonlylastashortwhile.Chimney problems Not Enough Draft-Chimneyistoolow.Thegeneralruleforchimneysis16feettall,andtwofeethigherthananythingtenfeetaroundit.

    Airmaybeleakinginaroundaloosefittingclean-out door.

    Toomanyelbowsinconnectorpipe,orseamsandjoints of connector pipe are not secured properly.

    Improperlysizedchimneyorstovepipe.

    Chimneymaybeblockedwithcreosoteorbirdnestsorsimilarobstructions.

    Crackedordefectivechimneyflueorliner.

    Down Drafts- Trees or other topographi-calbarriersmayimpedeonchimneyperformancecausingaircurrentstobepusheddownwardintotheflue.Thiscanalsobecausedbyneighboringbuildingsorotherchimneys.

    Maintenancemaintenance Thespiralchamberisbasicallyself-cleaning.However,ifthereisadraftproblemandyouhavebeenburningwoodforalongtimewithlittledemand,thespiralchamberwillneedtobecleaned.Tocleanthespiralchamber,removethestovepipeandscrapeanycreosoteordebrisfromthetopandfrontofthechamber.Therearofthechambershouldnothavemuchaccumulation.Ifitdoes,cleanitout.

    NOTE:1/4”to1/2”ofcreosoteinthespiralchamberisnormal.

    Thepipesinsidethefireboxwillaccumulatecreosoteifthedemandforheatistoolow,whenburningwood.1/8”to1/4”ofcreosoteisnormalonthepipesandfireboxwalls.Ifmorecreosotehasaccumulated,itshouldbescrapedoffofthesesurfaces.

    NOTE:Creosoteinthefireboxcanbeburnedoffbyburningcoalforafewdays.

    Thefirebricksmaybecomecrackedduringthecourseofnormaloperation.Acrackedbrickthatisstillinplace,isstilldoingitsjob,andneednotbereplacedimmediately.Ifabrickisbroken,andhasfallenoutofplace,itshouldbereplacedbeforeanyfurtherburningoccurs.ThefirebricksusedintheTridentBoilerareavailableforreplacementfromyourHarmandealer. Gasketsonthedoorsaretheretoregulateairtothefirebox.Ifagasketisfailing,you’llnoticedifficultyincontrollingthefire.Inspectthegasketsregularly,andreplacewithHarmansuppliedmate-rial only.
