Ensure each person involved in the installation / erection of a Safety Boot reads and understands the information

contained in this instruction booklet.

The manufacturer and / or distributor assumes no responsibility in

the event of incorrect / improper installation, product misuse, product modification or failure of timber / wood construction substrate.

N.B. The design life of a Safety Boot Base is 5 years from date of manufacture. Each Safety Boot is embossed with the date it was manufactured.

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure the Safety Boots being installed are not beyond their design life and that there are no cracks, splits or readily visible signs of material degradation.

Requirements

The Safety Boot System complies with the requirements of AS/NZ4994.1:2009 when installed correctly and in accordance with the Installation

Instructions as detailed in this booklet.

Installed correctly Safety Boots enable the builder to easily construct free-standing guardrail and stair rail systems that meet

Australian Standards on every job-site.

ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT FASTENERS!

ANCHOR POSTS TO SURFACE

• Securely fasten Safety Boots to surface using four (4) specified fasteners.

• You MUST always use the correct fasteners for different types of substrate / flooring. To meet Australian Standards strength requirements refer to the Fastener Specifications Section on the inside back cover of this instruction book for your specific application.

• If in doubt about which specific fastener to use, contact the supplier of the Safety Boot for more detailed information.

Requirements

The Safety Boot System complies with the requirements of AS/NZ4994.1:2009 when installed correctly and in accordance with the Installation

Instructions as detailed in this booklet.

PLACEMENT OF POSTS

• Place Safety Boot posts in line along all edges of unprotected walking / working surfaces of stairways, balconies, landings, rooves on parapets, elevator shafts, bridges etc.

• Space between the posts: MUST NOT exceed 2.1 metres.

• Place Safety Boot posts 450mm maximum away from all permanent wall structures.

ASSEMBLE POSTS

• Cut 90 x 35mm stud into two 1000mm lengths. DO NOT use wet or oversized timber.

• Fasten the lengths together with minimum three (3) 10# x 65mm screws or 2.8mm x 65mm bullet head nails to form a post.

• It is recommended post connection fasteners be placed no more than 100mm from both ends of the assembled post and one half way between ends.

• Place one end of the post into the top of the Safety Boot and tap until the bottom of the post is flush with the bottom of the Boot.

• Be sure and anchor the Safety Boot to the post using a 10mm x 40mm Hex-Head Coach Screw / Bolt and 10mm Washer.

STEP 4FASTEN RAILINGS TO SAFETY BOOT POSTS AND INSERT TOEBOARDS

N.B. Rails and handrails MUST always be attached to the inside of the posts as per the diagram below

• For Stair rails, including Handrails, top railings must be attached to the posts at approximately 1 metre. (Height of railings shall be 900-1000mm from the upper surface of the stair rail system to the surface of the tread, in line with the face of the riser at the forward edge of the tread).

• For Guardrails, including Landings, top railings must be flush with top of posts (1000mm).

• For all Mid rails, fasten halfway between top railings and flooring.

• Terminal (End) System, always extend the railings past the posts and stop the railings 100mm from any permanent structure.

EXCEPTION: Where there is no permanent structure, the ends of the rails must stop at the terminal post to prevent a projection hazard.

• For Toeboards, (required by Australian Standards) , cut 150 x 45mm to fit tight between two posts and drop toeboard into slots on each Safety Boot. (Toeboards are not required on stair rails).

• Rail to post connections. The recommended fixing is a 14 gauge x 75mm Type 17 Timber Screw or equivalent.

Safety Boots have been independently tested by ALS Industrial PTY LTD, a globallyrecognised and accredited testing authority, to confirm the performance of the product to both AS/NZ

4994.1:2009 And as1657-2013. Copies of the test results are available on request.

It was requested that ALS perform a series of tests on a safety rail post system designed to be fixed

to concrete, plywood or timber surfaces. The testing was to confirm the performance of the test

assembly to both AS 4994.1:2009 and AS 1657 - 2013. The system was installed on various test

surfaces as detailed in this report. A single unit of older design was also submitted to the test

schedule for comparison purposes.

The test assembly was assembled in accordance with the manufactures instructions, and tested first

with the two timber post uprights under load in the end on position (stiffest configuration), with the

follow up test performed with the uprights loaded against the long side of the timber. A preload was

applied in each test direction prior to each test, then released and datum point recorded for

deflection measurements. Loads were applied to the post at a point 1000mm above the test surface.

FASTENERS SPECIFICATIONS

N.B. Installers of Safety Boot, who are working close to open or unprotected edges, must use a correctly anchored / tethered, certified and / or accredited, safety harness during the installation procedure.

PLYWOOD (SUBFLOOR) APPLICATIONS (minimum of 19mm)To ensure a safe installation in applications where it is intended to secure / fix / fasten the Safety Boot to plywood being used as a substrate / subfloor, installers must use –

4 x grade 4.6 (As a minimum requirement) hex head bolts, nuts and washers

• For 19mm thick plywood the correct length of bolt is 45mm.)

• To determine the correct length of bolt required when fixing to plywood greater than 19mm in thickness, add the thickness of the flooring to the thickness of the base of the boot ((8mm)) and the thickness of the nut (normally 7mm) and allow 10mm for the washers and thread extension through the nut when tightened.)

and the

4 x 10mm Mudguard Washers, which are supplied with the Safety Boots.

N.B. In applications where access to the underside of the subfloor is not available, installers will be required to obtain independent, qualified advice on a safe and secure method of fastening the Safety Boot to the subfloor which satisfies the requirements of AS/NZ4994.1-2009.

Step 1 Inspect the Safety Boot to ensure it is not past its design life - (date stamp is embossed on all Safety Boots) and to ensure there are no cracks, splits or signs of material degradation.

Step 2 Position the Safety Boot where it is to be fastened and use it as a template to drill four x 10mm holes in the subfloor material.

Step 3 Assemble the supplied Mudguard Washer to the M10 bolt and insert the assembly through the pre-drilled holes in Safety Boot and subfloor material.

Step 4 Place a nut and washer on the bolt (on the underside of the subfloor) and tighten with a suitable spanner / wrench until the Safety Boot is pulled down firmly against the substrate.

CONCRETE ANCHORING APPLICATIONSEach Safety Boot anchored into concrete must use:

4 x Masonry Fasteners such as the Powers 10mm x 60mm Blue-Tip Screw-Bolts (catalogue number BT1060) or equivalent

and

4 x 4mm x 12mm x 40mm Mudguard Washers.

Step 1 Inspect the Safety Boot to ensure it is not past its design life - (date stamp is embossed on each Safety Boot) and to ensure there are no cracks, splits or signs of material degradation.

Step 2 Position the Safety Boot where it is to be fastened and use it as a template to drill four x 10mm holes to a minimum depth of 60mm in the concrete substrate.

Step 3 Assemble the Mudguard Washer and Screw Bolt (or equivalent approved product) and insert through the pre-drilled holes in the Safety Boot and into the mouth of the pre-drilled holes in the substrate.

Step 4 Using a hand spanner or quality socket with a ratchet spanner, begin tightening the anchor by applying forward pressure when engaging the first thread.

Step 5 Continue tightening the anchor until the head is firmly seated against the Safety Boot.

Powers Blue-Tip Screw-Bolt Anchors achieve their load capacities by the action of the threads under cutting the base material. It is therefore not necessary to tighten the anchor to a specific torque value but it is IMPORTANT to ensure the anchor head is firmly seated against the fixture and that the fixture is pulled down flush with the substrate surface.

N.B. When using fasteners ‘equivalent’ to those detailed above, installers must verify with the supplier that the fastener specifications for average ultimate pull out and shear values, and the fastener’s installation instructions meet the required strength / performance standards.
