17,149“A bug landed on me!”

That’s a reaction we get from many students we take out into the natural world here in the Bay Area. But at

Environmental Volunteers, we use that interaction as a teachable moment. Our volunteers assure the children that

the bug isn’t going hurt them. We encourage them to look more closely and tell us what they see and think about the bug. Why

does it have translucent wings? Why does it have antennae? What is its purpose in the natural world? It’s just a tiny, little bug, after all.

Our greatest gift as EVs is sharing our passion for nature, building science skills, and nurturing environmental stewardship in the next generation. It

is our goal to inspire children in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties to learn about preserving our natural world, and that includes tiny, little bugs. For 46 years, Environmental Volunteers has been pursuing that goal, and we can assure you that our volunteers today are as committed to that purpose as ever. At the end of our programs, we love hearing students say, “Wow!”

2018 is here, and we are honored to announce our new permanent Executive Director, Elliott Wright. Elliott has worked in nonprofit management for more than 12 years at four organizations: El Pomar Foundation, Sempervirens Fund, Canopy, and The Nature Conservancy. Elliott brings top-notch skills in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, community building, and outdoor education. We are thrilled to welcome Elliott to the EV community and look forward to working alongside him to deepen the strength and reach of the EV’s mission.

educational services to over 10,000 school children in over 400 school programs. We have also expanded learning programs at our beloved EcoCenter. If you haven’t visited in a while, please check out the calendar of events on our new and improved website at www.EVols.org.

We are excited for the future at Environmental Volunteers. We look forward to a new year that holds promising opportunities for promoting environmental stewardship. We hope this Annual Report will inspire your continued support of what we do and what we hope to accomplish as we move forward into 2018.

Warmest Regards,

Joyce Friedrichs, Co-Chair Marion Krause, Co-Chair

Building Environmental Literacy

Building Environmental LiteracyEV’s Education Committee continued updating our 59 learning stations to meet the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Through Educate for Action, students

are learning about environmental stewardship and discovering actions to promote healthier

ecosystems. The EV’s new curriculum helps students develop skills in observation,

critical thinking, and inquiry – just like scientists!

2017 Impact

46 Years of Hands-on Science LearningThrough our School Programs, we served 7,541 students

in 52 schools throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, and 2,619 students received field trips to local nature preserves! At the EcoCenter, the EV hosted Plankton Day, Yoga in the Baylands, the 3rd annual Ravenswood Art Show, and also art exhibits by Linda Curtis, Jennifer Fraser, and Gunn High Schools students.

Fostering Community Connections

In 2017, EV partnered with the following groups to bring hands-on environmental education to the community: AAUW Tech Trek, Bonnie’s House Play-School, Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, Canopy, Catholic Charities Youth Club, Kavanaugh Neighborhood of East Palo Alto,

Khan Lab School, Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo,

Symantec, and The Vi.

Environmental Volunteers have always been one of the outstanding environmental education programs nationally. The main message is: our actions matter. Each person is empowered to make changes in the world. One thing we know about environmental leaders is that there has been research that has been done looking at their childhood, looking at what influenced them to become environmental leaders. And so much of that is creating a sense of place and caring about a place. Understanding how an ecosystem works is really important but what makes the biggest difference is that commitment to action.

-Lori Mann Educational Consultant, NAAEE.

Education Programs Celebrating DiversityWith a grant from Youth Outside, Environmental Volunteers launched the Nature and Culture Series, an educational program celebrating the connection between diverse cultures and the natural world. The series included Pipil Culture and Crafts of El Salvador, Crafts of the Ohlone, and Hawaiian Crafts and Hula.

Fostering VolunteerismIn 2016-2017, our 120 volunteers gave a combined total of 5,486 hours of their time to inspire a love of nature. Our volunteers led programs in classrooms, on field trips, in community centers, and at the EcoCenter. Through Educate for Action, they adopted new teaching methods to better promote environmental stewardship. Last but not least, they helped keep our teaching materials in top condition for 10,000 students to explore (that’s 10,000 pairs of hands)! They were fascinated

by the edible plants and touching nature. One student brought some pickleweed back to school so her twin sister could try some. One 3rd grade student said that this was the best field trip that he has ever been on. The classroom presentation was extremely helpful to prepare the students with background information a couple days before the field experience. The small group ratio of 6 students, 1 adult chaperone, and the docent was fantastic.

New Website and Volunteer PortalEV released a new website with a fresh, updated look and mobile-friendly design. The new website offers user-friendly navigation, a robust volunteer portal, and easy access to information about EV programs and volunteer opportunities.

My 4th grade students and I had a wonderful time on our field trip to Los Trancos. It was wonderful for us all to be outside. As the teacher, I learned something I had not understood before - that San Francisco Bay is actually an estuary.

Thank you for your efforts to help my students gain some understanding about geology during the field trip as well as during the classroom stations. These are such a great combination!

In appreciation,

Evelyn Wester 4th grade teacher, Landels Elementary

I really like when we examined the skulls and put our hands in the blubber and the ice. I learned a lot about how many teeth dolphins have. The most interesting thing I learned was how long marine mammals are.

—Reviane, 3rd grade

It was fun to learn about the animals that live in the mud. Also it was fun learning about the plants that live by the shore. And learning how the birds get their food from the sea. I liked going to each station and learn about each topic.

Can you come back and teach us another time?—Olivia, 4th grade
