4 Medsin National Conference 2016

Sir Harry Burns graduated from the University of Glasgow and then went on to become an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. During this time he became interested in the effect of social conditions on health stating: ‘I never once wrote a death certificate saying the cause of death was living in a horrible house or unemployment. People die of molecular deaths, such as proteins coagulating in arteries and causing heart attacks and strokes. Yet we know that poor [social] conditions lead to poor health and premature deaths’. After this, he went on to study a Masters in Public Health before becoming Greater Glasgow’s Public Health Director. He has spent his career exploring the connections between poor social conditions and ill health focusing on the ‘Glasgow Effect’. The Glasgow effect is the observed

lower life expectancy and poorer health in Glasgow compared to the rest of the UK. Although some of this effect may be explained by deprivation levels this does not fully account for the health inequalities observed. Chief Medical Officer for Scotland from 2005 to 2014, during this time he prioritised the importance of early development for future health and wellbeing, co-chairing the Scottish government’s ‘Early Years Project’. He will be presenting on the topic of ‘the Biology of Poverty and Social Chaos’.

Medicine in ConflictRichard Villar

Mr. Richard Villar is a world-renowned ex-SAS orthopaedic surgeon. He qualified in medicine from St Thomas’s Hospital in London before joining the SAS as a medical officer and then went on to specialise in conservative hip surgery. Mr Villar is currently a member of the United Kingdom Disaster Emergency Response Team and this work has taken him to Libya following the civil war, and to the aftermath of earthquakes in Java, Kashmir and Haiti. His career has taken him to trouble-spots all over the

world where he has been faced with landmines, avalanches, and hostile interrogation. This talk will focus on the difficulties, dangers and occasional impossibilities of providing medical aid in disaster areas and war zones. In the past he has described arriving in a stricken area: “Without water, power or the rule of law, you take nothing for granted - the challenges go beyond what most of us can imagine.”

Refugees & Asylum Seekers

Amal Azzudin

Amal Azzudin is one of the “Glasgow Girls” famous for campaigning against the use of dawn raids to remove asylum seeking families, and against the detainment of children in detention centres. Amal went on to study community development at the University of Glasgow and completed a Masters in Human Rights and International Politics. Amal is currently a community development facilitator with the Mental Health Foundation, where

she is responsible for a project working with refugees and asylum seekers. During the current refugee crisis, Amal travelled to Lesvos and started a campaign with other activists which raised over £10,000. Since her return from Lesvos she has given evidence to the Scottish Parliament, the European External Relations Committee, the University of Glasgow, and Westminster, in the hope that she can make a difference to the lives of refugees.

Refugees’ Experience of Integration

in ScotlandDr Alison Strang

A leader in the area of strategy for refugee integration in Scotland, Dr Alison Strang has chaired local government, Scottish government and the Scottish Refugee Council strategies on this topic since its inception in 2012. New Scots: Integrating Refugees in Scotland’s Communities’, 2014 - 2017 coordinates efforts in Scotland on an understanding of integration as, “a two-way process that involves positive change in both the individuals and the host communities and which leads to cohesive, multicultural

communities.” Alison’s research interests concern the health and wellbeing of those affected by conflict and disaster. Recent work has included studies of refugees’ social connections; social isolation and mental health and new refugees’ integration progress through the Holistic Integration Service. Her main areas of interest are psychological well being in fragile environments, refugee mental health and wellbeing and settlement, integration and social cohesion.

Using Routinely Collected Data to

Figure Out Where the NHS is Going Wrong

Dr Helen Irvine

Dr Helene Irvine is a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in Glasgow. She completed a BSc in Physiology at McGill University in Montreal, a medical degree at the University of Toronto, a clinical internship in Toronto General Hospital, an MSc in Human Biology at Oxford University while on a Rhodes Scholarship, and the Master of Public Health at the University of Glasgow. Her education became more financially oriented when she completed the MBA (Life Sciences) with the Open

University and developed an interest in deciphering why the NHS is struggling and finding ways to reduce demand for unnecessary investigation and care. This plenary discusses Dr Irvine’s research that shows the serious unbalancing of the NHS in both Scotland and England, in favour of specialist community health and secondary services, at the expense of general practice, district nursing and social care of the elderly, putting pressure on out of hours, A&E, and inpatient admission.

Doctors as Social Activists

Prof Graham Watt

Since 1994, Graham Watt has been Professor of General Practice at University of Glasgow and has long been an advocate for equality and public health issues. Professor Watt coordinates the Deep End Project, involving the 100 most deprived general practices in Scotland, and chairs the Programme Advisory Panel of the UK charity, Medical Aid for

Palestinians. “The social causes of illness are just as important as the physical ones. The medical officer of health and the practitioners of a distressed area are the natural advocates of people. They well know the factors that paralyse all their efforts. They are not only scientists but also responsible citizens, and if they did not raise their voices, who else should?”

Actions for the Weekend

The theme of our weekend is ‘Inspiring Change’ and hopefully the amazing speakers and workshops this weekend will do just that! To help you channel this strengthened desire to create change, we’ve listed some opportunities to take action with a few examples below:

RefuweegeeRefuweegee is a community led project set-up to ensure that all refugees arriving in Glasgow are welcomed to the city in true Glaswegian style. The aim is to provide every refugee arriving in the city with a community welcome pack. Each pack will contain three categories of items; essentials, a Glasgow welcome and ‘letters from locals’. Over the conference weekend please write your own letters to welcome the refugees!

Volunteering MapThere are numerous volunteering opportunities locally and nationally whose work relates to the themes of our conference, but sometimes it can be difficult to know how to get involved. We have provided a list of relevant organisations that we know are in need of enthusiastic people willing to give up some time, but we don’t know them all so please add your own suggestions to our ‘Volunteering Map’ to spread the word! We’ll write up all the suggestions after the weekend and circulate these to all of our delegates and across the Medsin network.

Photo StuntAfter Plenary 1 we will all briefly gather in the atrium for a photo of us displaying a banner with the slogan ‘Humanity Knows No Borders’. After so many recent negative headlines relating to post-Brexit racism, and the disappointing efforts of our government in helping asylum seekers and refugees entering our country, we want to show that Medsin stands with all immigrants, regardless of race or background. Please share the photo on social media far and wide!

MSF Kunduz - The Campaign for Medical ImpartialityYou may have spotted the rather large banner commemorating the anniversary of the bombing of an MSF-operated hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan on 3rd October 2015 by the United States Air Force. This poster represents a new education campaign and a grassroots mobilisation of medical networks across the UK in support of medical impartiality; a doctors right to provide treatment to those in need irrespective of their political affiliation. This campaign calls on the global medical community to denounce attacks on healthcare and hospitals and stand in solidarity with their colleagues around the world in defence of the impartial practice of medicine. You can learn more about this movement by talking to MSF at our Global Health fair and then raise awareness on the issue of medical impartiality in your university.

Visit www.notatarget.msf.org for more information.

CollectionsWe’re running an ambitious four-pronged item collection at the conference this year:

• Textbooks for ‘Students for Rwandan Medics’ – a Glasgow University society that does great work in supporting Rwandan medical students. Second-hand textbooks are much needed and appreciated, supporting the education of medical and healthcare students.

• Food Bank Collection – Please donate any dried or tinned food goods (e.g. cereal, tinned fruit, biscuits) that we’ll distribute to a local food bank.

• Refuweegee Collection – For their welcome packs they also need donations of winter clothing (gloves, hats, scarfs, socks), Stationary (notepads, pens, crayons, colouring books) and ‘Glasgow items’ (E.g. Tunnocks, Irn bru, guide books – be creative!)

• Toiletries / Sanitary Towels – We are collaborating with Glasgow University Service to the Homeless (GUSH) to collect and then distribute these items as part of their winter collection for women in Glasgow.

The Real Junk Food Project Glasgow

Sunday LunchSunday lunch is provided by The Real Junk Food Project - Glasgow. A fantastic social enterprise that diverts food destined for waste and uses it to create delicious and healthy meals. In the UK around 15 million tonnes of food is wasted every year which has a significant environmental impact - if we all stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, the benefit to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road!
