Wealso offer the opportunity to bring your group andstudy in your own way in any of our galleries. We call these self-guided sessions and in manycases we can support your visit with teachers’notes or further information.

Providing access to original museum collectionartefacts enables children to explore and investigatetheir topics in a unique way.

By holding a Roman period pot, a WWII blackoutlantern, a crocodile skull or getting close up to areproduction from our art collections, your pupils cangain a greater understanding of their topic, developan enquiring mind and be inspired.

The CoreYoung People

The Core, our youth forum, develops, encourages and engages young people aged11-18 years, by developing and promoting eventsand activities based on exhibitions, collections andMuseum programmes.

This is achieved through events such as Music,Murder, Mystery, a collaboration with the NationalPortrait Gallery. This brought together hard to reachyoung people through street art, break dancing andrapping and gifted and talented singers using literaryquizzes and drama.

Young ExplainersYoung People

The Young Explainers project (for 18 and 25 yearolds), promotes the Museum to young people viaa programme of events and activities. These aredevised by the Young Explainers and based onexhibitions, collections, and the Museum programme.Students are offered a comprehensive trainingpackage which enables them to engage their peersand the rest of the community with the Museum.

Last year’s Young Explainers group gave their time tosupport the work of the museum by engaging youngpeople and the wider community with the exhibitionSir Joshua Reynolds: The Acquisition of Genius.Their work was equivalent to 1 full time member ofstaff working for 39.5 weeks (i.e. nearly nine monthsfull time work) in just 5 months!
