Face-out display on shelvesPublishers spend thousands of pounds designing children’s book covers to appeal to young readers. Instead of replacing existing shelving, transform your shelves by creating face-out display amongst the mass of spine-out titles.

Use products such as Feature Fillers, Zig-zags or Feature Shelves to make your displays look inviting and encourage students to reach out and take a book.

Replenish stock frequentlyFace-out books will be borrowed quickly so always replace and replenish stock on a regular basis so that there are no empty, uninviting spaces. If a shelf becomes half empty, readers stop browsing – it looks picked over and they think that the best books have already gone.

The first step to building your BookSpace is to choose the right height of shelving for your situation. BookSpace comes in three different heights, each carefully designed to meet the needs of children at different ages.

A Stack is an upright unit of shelves which includes different options for book display and activities - see next page.

Safety We know that safety is paramount in the school environment. You can be confident that all of our products are safe. The BookSpace shelving range has been externally tested by FIRA, the leading authority on furniture testing and conforms to British Standards BS 5873-4:1988. All free-standing units are stable and if a unit needs to be affixed to a load-bearing wall, wall fixings are supplied.

Environmental impact All of our wooden units are manufactured using timber from renewable sources and manufactured in the UK.

Wooden units and shelves We use a significantly higher grade MDF than many school shelving systems which means our products won’t buckle and bow. We also edge-band our products so they withstand the knocks of everyday life in a busy classroom or library.

On-shelf display unitsAll of our on-shelf display units are made from high grade strong acrylic.

SeatsAll of our seating has an internal wooden frame which provides maximum strength. We cover the seats with high grade foam and fabric which is wipe-cleanable, urine-proof, bleach-cleanable and fire retardant.


Showroom seminars

Reader-friendly approaches in school librariesThis one-day course for librarians, teachers and teaching assistants will introduce you to a new way of thinking about how to present reading positively to young people.

Suitable for both KS1 and KS2.Participants will discuss a range of attitudes to reading, both positive and negative, through individual case-studies and gain confidence in connecting young people with books. You will understand how to identify reading audiences through analysing cover messages and practice selecting stock for a reader-centred display. You will also learn lots of practical techniques for making books look attractive on the shelves.

Fiona Edwards, our trainer, has successfully run this course for many schools and library services. The course is held in our Showroom in Birmingham which allows you to see and test our furniture close-up as well as enjoying a nice lunch!
