Inspection of civil andstructural assets

Power Case Study - Steam and Power Generator, UK

ABB deliver a cost effectivemaintenance strategy thathelps the client meet industrybest practice.

The l ife of c ivi l and structura l assets is normal ly governed

by the original design, standards of construction, the

environment and the adequacy of maintenance. The failure

of civil and structural assets usually occurs as a result of

unauthorised modifications or a lack of maintenance, thereby

allowing deterioration over an extended period of time.

The client wanted to adopt a philosophy of r igid adherenceto best industry practise by pro-actively inspecting their

civil and structural assets. The plant was in excess of 40

years old and the client wanted to ensure a cost effective

maintenance strategy was developed, controlled and

implemented.

Benefits

−  A cost ef fective and focused scheme of examination

− Improved budgetary and time planning due to the focused

scheme of examination developed

−  Adherence to industry bes t practice

 −

More effective and cheaper sustenance repairs, savingbreakdown costs

− Confidence in the integrity and availability of the asset

through the remaining or extended term

Solution

ABB’s Civil Inspection ser vice is buil t a round developing the

strategy for maintaining the integrity of the civil and structural

assets where the consequences of failure are unacceptable.

ABB’s inspection procedures have been developed from

over 15 years experience in the examination of structures,

bunds and drainage and are used to form the basis of amaintenance regime regarding ageing plant.

On this project ABB formed a team with client personnel

to review the individual civil and structural assets in detail.

The assets inc luded industria l steel f rame structures and

pipebridges, reinforced concrete chimney stacks, culverts,

underground drainage, bunds and ponds. The client also

owned reservoirs over 25,000m3 which required inspecting

in accordance with the 1975 Reservoir Act.

A review of the design and previous maintenance act ivi ties

was carried out and schemes of examination developed toensure that appropriate inspection activities were adopted.

The scope of the inspection was dependent on the type of

structure and its criticality. The remedial actions from the

inspection were tracked in the ABB civil inspection database

giving control over the maintenance activities.

The ABB civ il inspec tion database provided the information

hub for the inspection activities. It houses all the inspection

reports, defect remediation, modifications and written

schemes of examination. It is also used as a management

information tool, scheduling inspections, creating look ahead

plans and checking for overdue inspections. It is designedto be interrogated on any of these aspects and also closely

monitors the progress of remedial actions.

ABB have developed an action tracking database linked

to the ABB civil inspection database. The action tracking

database was used by the client to monitor outstanding

actions from the inspection reports enabling management

control, planning and overview.

Monthly reports were issued to the client showing the actions

that were outstanding, cancelled, on hold and completed.

Al l actions taken by the client were uploaded into the ABBcivil inspection database for future records, hence ensuring

adequate records were maintained for future reviews.
