Here’s To The Heroes

Unique permissionIt’s been a busy term for us. As we have been rehearsing for this concert, we

have also been out into the community, taking our passion for singing with us.

Award ceremonies, charity concerts, fundraising for Help for Heroes – wherever

two or three are gathered, there will be singing. It’s why we are here tonight.

If you would like us to sing for you, why not get in touch? Our website

www.inspirationuk.com has all the details.

Tonight’s concert has been a joy to learn; strong and emotional in the most part,

some well known favourites and some brand new ones. We also have a special

exclusive, with unique permission from Andrew Lloyd Webber and The Really

Useful Group to perform the official Jubilee song ‘Sing’ with the wonderful

Orchestra of Opera North. We might even ask you to join in.

We are taking this concert to Edinburgh in August to sing in the Edinburgh

Fringe Festival where, once again, we have been given unique permission (I’m

spotting a theme here), this time to perform at the Royal Scots War Memorial in

Princes Gardens. And then in November we have been invited back to Disneyland

Paris for their Christmas Choral Celebration where we have been given (have

you guessed?) unique permission to sing the 20th Anniversary Song, the only

non-Disney group to be allowed to do so.

As the song says, ‘Who knows what tomorrow brings?’.

On 4 June over4,000 beacons were lit

across the Commonwealth tocelebrate the Queen’s DiamondJubilee. The first was lit on thegrounds of Apifo’ou College

in Nuku‘alofa, Tonga byTongan girl scouts and

boy scouts.

Gary GriffithsInspiration Music DirectorI have been singing for as long as I can remember.Probably my first public performance was singingthe ‘Twelve Days Of Christmas’ at Tettenhall WoodInfant School in Wolverhampton, where I grew upin the 70s. The Grammar School was my majormusical influence – music was everywhere. SchoolChoir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, JazzBand – alongside the Youth Orchestra (where Iwas principal oboist) and the Concert Band(principal percussion).

Maths (my other passion) ran alongside for while, but when it came to Universityit didn’t stand a chance really. It had to be music, and so to York. Threewonderful years of almost constant music making (being a singer, oboist andpercussionist meant I could be in every group going) also included being ChorusMaster for York Light Opera, and Musical Director for Pickering Musical Society –which in turn led to my own business arranging music for choirs and orchestras.

I was by now (mid–90s) a tenor (yes really) in the Choir of York Minster with allthat entails; daily services in the Cathedral as well as many world tours, concertsand recordings. After 18 years of what was in the beginning a dream job, I leftand became part of the creative team behind the formation of SingLive; againwhat in the beginning was a dream job.

Now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weeklyrehearsals are a joy. Our trips around the country and abroad are like taking afamily on holiday – even if it is a rather extended familyof 400. And I do think of the singers as just that.My musical family.

Andy BoothAccompanistAndy Booth is a professional musician hailingfrom Chesterfield who is the founder and principalconductor for Fono Productions, a professionalentertainments management company within-house full symphonic orchestra and bands. When not in this role Andy can be found as aprofessional freelance MD/Conductor.

Credits include: ‘The Anetta Lectures’ (Rome 2012),‘The Sound Of Music’ (Lyceum Sheffield 2012),‘Sleeping Beauty’ (Sheffield Lyceum 2011), ‘The FallOf Heavy Rain’ (Crucible Sheffield 2011), ‘Happy Days’ (Crucible Sheffield), ‘SoundOf The Glenn Miller Era’ (Tour and Her Majesty’s Theatre, 2012/11/10), ‘Peter Pan’(Sheffield Lyceum 2010), ‘Sweeney Todd’ (Sheffield Lyceum 2010) and ‘TheRightful Owners Of The Song’ (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra 2010).

Besides all this, Andy still finds time to be the Chair and Musical Director of theBarlow Annual Promenade Concerts, a prestigious village festival in the heart ofDerbyshire culminating in June each year. He also runs his own mini jazz club(Mister B’s), conducts, composes, accompanies and consults for a number ofchoirs and music groups and still continues the family tradition as MusicalDirector of The Carolare Choir (Chesterfield).

Inspiration teamChristine RowlandsSince the conception of Inspiration Christine has beenchoreographer, stage manager and lighting assistant inboth Leeds and Newcastle and has sung in the all of theconcerts in Leeds.

Christine says, “It is always wonderful performing andworking with everyone in Inspiration. I am very proud tobe singing today and supporting the wonderful Help forHeroes charity.”

Barbara SumroyAfter discovering the man called ‘Gary Griffiths’ 13 yearsago when I was 18!!, I was ecstatic when he started upInspiration and honoured when asked to be RehearsalManager. I enjoy my Monday evening ‘Sing-a-long-a-Gary-and-Andy-and-299-other-singers’ so much,I never want it to end.

This concert is in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’ so if you seethe collecting tins coming round please give generously.

Inspiration (Leeds) is also very honoured to be able tosing alongside The Orchestra of Opera North. We are alittle saddened because this will be the last concert thatwill be under the watchful eye of Dougie Scarfe but wewish him all the best in his new venture!

Jane LarderJane has always enjoyed singing, but it wasn’t until shemet Gary that she had the chance to do more than singin the church choir. She looks forward to greeting herInspiration family each week and sharing their laughterand tears.

The extra space for rehearsals at the Civic Hall meansthat, as long as Christine can fit us on stage, we haveroom to expand and I look forward to meeting evenmore old and new Inspirationers in September.

Performed by theMilitary Wives Choir under

the direction of GarethMalone, ‘Wherever You Are’

was composed by Paul Mealorusing letters between UK

servicemen in Afghanistanand their wives andgirlfriends at home.

A special messageThe Light Dragoons are now coming to end of their second month of a sixmonth tour of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Our work is challenging and verydemanding but it is also exceptionally rewarding. Since the Regiment’s last tourof duty here in 2009, the improvements are very much evident and this gives usthe impetus to drive forward with our tasks and bring further improvements tothis troubled country. As ever, the fortitude, bravery and humour of our soldiersis humbling – they go about their business with steely determination but there isalways time for laughter and our morale is high.

Of course, what helps us on our way is the extraordinary support that we receivefrom the home front. That you are raising funds for Help the Heroes means somuch to all servicemen and women but given that you are in Leeds and Newcastlemakes it extra special for The Light Dragoons, who recruit from Yorkshire and theNorth East. Thank you so much for your support. It is very much appreciated.

Lt Col S J Plant MBE, Commanding Officer, The Light DragoonsHelmand Province, Afghanistan
