Confidence is a tricky thing. Sometimes it’s notthere even when people say it is. It usuallysignals the end of a football manager serviceswhen their boss says they have ‘totalconfidence’ in them.

It comes and goes, and for the last few yearsit’s fair to say it’s been mostly gone! The goodnews is that it’s back, and unlike a manager’sempty promises, this confidence is built onresults (rather than the lack of them).

In 2014 the construction industry is expectedto grow at its fastest pace for six years. Putsimply, the recession seems to be easing, people feel more secure in their jobs, and asa result they’re more confident spendingmoney doing up their homes.

Confidence boostIt’s this combination of private housinggrowth, new commercial building projectsand housing repair that’s driving the industry’snewfound optimism. So, with all that in mindin this issue of Insight we highlight what’saround this year to help you make the most ofevery opportunity to grow your business andgive added value to your customers.

On page 12 Paul Reed, Sales and MarketingDirector at Marley Eternit, shares histhoughts on what’s in store for the industryover the coming year. Page 28 highlights thedangers of being a cheap’slate’ when itcomes to choosing your roof tiles, while onpage 30 we talk you through the benefits of using a distributor for industrial roofing projects.

Elsewhere you’ll see how Dupont haveincorporated reinforced integrated tape intothe edge of their breather membranes tocombat wind washing (page 4). And, if roofventilation is your thing then we bring youRollOut from Hambleside Danelaw (page 23),which uses a perforated mat across the ridgeor hip to ventilate the roof and keepcondensation at bay. Or there’s Cembrit’scontinuous vent ridge, another dry fix solutionto roof ventilation on page 6.

If you’re looking for something to help yousay goodbye to blocked gutters anddownpipes then check out the range ofproducts from Floplast on page 18.

Those who aren’t familiar with the concept of‘wind washing’ could be forgiven for gettingthe wrong idea... But, as roofers, we know it’sone of the key factors contributing to thermalbypass. External cold air can infiltrate andcirculate within and across a construction andit’s a problem faced by many buildings.

Thankfully DuPont Building Innovations hasincorporated reinforced integrated tape intothe edge of its breather membranes. Thesenew reinforced edges are great at solvingwind washing for commercial or residentialstructures. You’ll get superior energyefficiency when you install it in sealed roofand wall applications.

The clever technology behind the tape is alamination of spunbonded polypropylene –good for a number of reasons:

• Harder to tear

• Membrane fixes better in the overlap zone

• Rolls out flatter

• Easier and better quality overlaptaping

• Excellent wind-tight seal

• Better looking roll formation

Testing, testing

And they’ve proved it works too! By settingup a series of pilot installations they testedand confirmed its performance. All theenhanced DuPont™ Tyvek® breathermembranes for buildings with integrated tapeand reinforced edges are CE marked, as areall the membranes in the DuPont™ Tyvek®

and DuPont™ AirGuard® range.

Breathe easyReinforced integrated tape gives DuPont™ Tyvek®

breather membranes an enhanced seal of approval.

It’s a singleplayer game

Fortunately a single-layer system caneliminate many ofthese difficultiesand still provide aroofing solutionthat’s every bit aseffective.

A typical single-layer system isdesigned as a seriesof separate panelswith insulationlayers bondedtogether offsite. Providersof single–layersystems suchas GradientFlat Roofing

(part of the Recticel Group) manufacturethe panels under factory conditionsgiving a number of key benefits:

• Dramatically reduces the amountof work done under difficult on-site conditions

• Any services or obstacles on the roof can easily beaccommodated at the design stage

• Leads to much more reliableadhesive bonding

• Likelihood of errors is minimised

• Each board is individuallymarked and referenced to drawings, which show its place on the roof

• Once on-site, installation is mucheasier and quicker freeing you up tomove on to the next job

Serving the roofing and property improvement industry |5|

Conventional multi-layer solutions built up onsite can certainly work. Done properly you’llget a roof with good thermal insulation andthe correct falls for reliable drainage. But,just because something isn’t broken doesn’tmean you shouldn’t fix it.

Mutli-layer systems have a number ofdisadvantages when compared to theirsingle-layer cousins, including:

• You need to bond a total surface areathat can be many times larger thanthe footprint of the roof itself

• You have to do this on-site, oftenunder less than perfect weatherconditions

• This involves extra work, extra timeand extra costs

• The potential for mistakes to creep inis also great, as any penetrations tothe roof have to be worked around

Single minded

Single vs multi-layer systemsMulti-layer systems:

• A series of tapered insulation components are laid over flat ‘packer’ boards bonded to the roof substrate

• Bonding is carried out on site

• Completed roof is built up layer by layer

Single-layer systems:

• A series of individual roofing components

• Carefully bonded together off-site under controlled factory conditions

• Delivered to site ready for bonding directly on to the roof deck as single units

Modern single-layerinsulation systems now offermore and more benefits –especially for flat roofs.

ROOFING PRODUCTS

The final roof is perfectly tailored to thedemands of each individual project. Taperinga single-layer solution to create any fall, nomatter how simple or complex, isstraightforward meaning that rainwater run-off is not a problem. This helps meet BuildingRegulations, lowers roof maintenance costsand extends the roof’s working life.

Singularly versatile

Whether it’s a new roof or a refurbishmentproject, single-layer insulation can be usedwith a wide range of membrane types. It’sideal for either a warm, cold or inverted roofand can incorporate a variety of materials. It’sa great option if you’re looking to make yournext build quicker and more straightforward.

Wet, wet, wetRidges, particularly wet mortar fixed ridges, are regular sources of claims for damage. Thevariability in the ratio of cement, sand andwater in the mortar is often where problemsstart. This can be made worse by the quantityof water vapour in the atmosphere wheninstalled and how fast it dries. Modern fibrecement slates, with their tough, weatherresistant surface coatings, aren’t a goodfoundation for mortar.

These are all good reasons to opt for a dryfixed alternative. Cembrit have offered angledand half round dry fix fibre cement ridges foryears and have recently developed an angledversion, with a bonus… built-in ventilation.

Hot air risesHot air also has a greater moisture carryingcapacity than cold air, causing all sorts ofproblems as it rises from the rest of thebuilding and accumulates in the roof space.

A regularly touted solution is the so called‘breather membrane’, which is supposed toget rid of the need to ventilate.

The trouble is that it only applies to thecommon, rough surface, single lapped tilesand relies on the accidental seepage of warm

moist air through gaps in the roof covering. This seepage is virtually non-existent in thin, close fitting double lapped products such asslates. The result can be condensationdamage to insulation and roof timbers anddistortion of the roof covering. Not ideal!

AIRFIXThe best solution is to flush the moisture outof the entire roof pitch from eaves to ridge. Inthe past, vents were often seen as separateunits that include outlets. The downside tothem is that they can leave stale air pocketsand the units look obtrusive. Far better tohave ventilation along the whole length ofthe ridge and benefit from the ‘stack effect’,drawing moist air out of all roof voids.

And, that’s where Cembrit’s Continuous VentRidge comes in. It’s practical, it performs andit looks good:

• Dry fixed with four self-drillingscrews, so it’s really simple to install

• Can be cut with hand tools, so noneed for dust suppressed mechanicalcutters

• At 3.24 Kg Cembrit’s ridges are halfthe weight per linear metre ofconcrete or clay ridge covering

Safe as houses With continuous eave and ridge ventilationthere are fewer pockets of unventilatedspace. Cembrit’s new vent ridge allows you toachieve this safe in the knowledge that youare providing a roof in compliance with theBritish Standards.

Looks better than the untidy alternativeoffered by a concrete or clay ridge too. Fiddlyto install, with a ventilated flexible rollbetween the ridge and the roof slope, thereare questions over their long-term efficiency.

The Cembrit Continuous Vent Ridge isprobably the least obtrusive ridge ventsolution. It’s made from the same material asthe slates, and angled to match a variety ofroof pitches, without the cowls and highprofile openings you get with older products.

For a practical, easy to fit, highly effectivesolution to ridge ventilation Cembrit hascome up trumps. Hot air? We don’t think so.

People will (and do!) collect anything. Donald Trump collects skyscrapers. Demi Moore allegedly has an entire housereserved for her doll collection. Sharon Stonecollects cashmere sweaters and Napoleoncollected countries.

For most of us stamps, toy trains or footballcards is probably a more likely scenario. But, if filling your house with Hornby isn’tyour thing, don’t despair. Today there’s anarray of building accreditations and badgesyou can collect – you just need to use theright products.

Demonstrating the superiority of yoursuppliers is a key way of providingreassurance to your customers, and of givingyou a competitive edge. That’s why Cembritsees their fibre cement slate accreditationsas badges of honour.

Raising the standards

Originally the British Standard (BS) wasenough. Like the Queen or the Beeb, everybody knew and trusted the organisation. It’s still the basic minimum needed to meetBuilding Regulations and for fibre cementslates it’s BS EN 492.

Against the grainFresh for 2014, Cembrit have giventheir textured fibre cement slates amore pronounced grain. With atexture that’s easy to see, it sets theirWesterland and Zeeland slates apartfrom others on the market. It’s just one example of how they’realways looking to continually improveand develop their products to meetcustomers’ needs.

But.

Recently the EU made CE marking compulsoryto create a level playing field across Europe. So, now all products sold within the EU arecovered by a harmonised EN (Euro Norm), andare labelled as such. They come with adeclaration from the supplier that the productcomplies with and incorporates the essentialcharacteristics stated in the EN. All fibrecement slate manufacturers have these.

In addition, organisations such as the UK’sBritish Board of Agrément have the powers togrant independent approval for products forwhich no standard exists.

The BBA also have the power to validate andcheck manufacturer’s claims. And they’rehighly valued. The best manufacturers stilluse them to audit their systems andindependently verify product quality. Cembrithold a BBA certificate for fibre cement slates03/4041.

Quality will out

Cembrit run a world class, EN ISO 9001,product quality management system.

Today the environment is important tocustomers and suppliers alike.

Whether it is the effect of the productionprocess and the responsible sourcing ofmaterials, or the lifetime impact of the fibrecement slates, Cembrit have it covered. Thefactory runs an environmental managementsystem to EN ISO 14001 and can supply anEnvironmental Product Declaration, statingorigin and impact of materials and energy, both independently produced and audited.Cembrit’s entry on the BRE’sgreenbooklive.com shows how the slatescontribute to buildings achieving a goodecopoint score.

Paul Reed, Marley Eternit’s Salesand Marketing Director, takes alook at what’s in store for theroofing industry in 2014.

Everyone knows, unless you’vebeen living in a cave, that thelast few years have beenchallenging for the constructionindustry. But, after the storm itlooks like calmer waters may lieahead in the coming year.

Economically, the buildingindustry is in a very differentplace compared with recentyears. Construction activity isgrowing at its fastest rate for sixyears with government schemessuch as First Buy and Help toBuy, boosting house building and

‘Prediction is especially if it’s

That’s Niels Bohr’s* view of things, but what does Paul Reed think?

making a significantimpact. Earlyindications are that they arecontributing to the recovery.

Activity on the up

Construction was oneof the hardest hit

industries following thefinancial crisis. And, although

activity is growing quickly it’s stillway below where it was adecade ago.

The financial downturn, followednow by rapid building growth, isplacing significant demand onboth construction products andskills. It’s ironic that now demandis there, builders, contractors anddistributors may be worriedabout the availability of theproducts they need. Thankfully, manufacturers have alreadyincreased production levels tomeet demand, and with moreconfidence about the outlookthey’re likely to continue raisingtheir output through 2014.

Keeping up thestandards

It’s not just the upturn in activity,

and the security it brings, thatwill influence the roofing sectorin 2014. The introduction of newregulations aimed at improvingthe security of the roof structurecould change the way tiles andslates are fixed in the UK. Thisfollows concerns about extremeweather and the security ofmortar and will bring us into linewith other European countries.

A revised version of BS5534, thecode of practice for slating andtiling, is due by the middle of2014. The detail is sketchy butwe do know the

revised standard is set to be inline with the Eurocode and islikely to result in more stringentroof tile fixing specificationsnationally. It’s probable all tileswill need to be mechanicallyfixed, rather than relying onmortar fixing alone.

That’s good news for dry fixsystems and will mean anincreased use of fibre cementslates. They’re naturally securethrough design with a low profileleading edge, which alreadyincorporates both a nail and

rivet fixing.

Nothing to declare?

We are also expecting greateruse of Environmental ProductDeclarations (EPDs) in thespecification process. Alreadyadopted in other Europeancountries, EPDs have a number ofinteresting features:

• Provide verifiable, accurate environmentalinformation for productsand their applications

• Include embodied carbon data

• In future, EPDs will beused to quantify aspectsand impacts to assess theenvironmental andeconomic performance ofbuildings

• EPD data can beincorporated into BIMobjects to give a completeoverview of theenvironmental impact of a building and theproducts it uses.

Responsible sourcing

Marley have been leading theway when it comes toresponsible sourcing. And, withBES 6001, the responsiblesourcing standard, becomingmore widely used by customers, particularly in the public sector,we have seen our roof tiles usedon several projects specifically

because of our BES 6001accreditation.

It wouldn’t be surprising if BES6001 is adopted into buildingstandards in the near future – it’scertainly something roofingcontractors are increasinglylikely to be asked about.

Back to the future

These are just a few of thethings I think we’ll seecoming over the horizon in2014, but who knows? The perils of predictionare many. The only certainthing is we’ll all find outpretty soon…

There are some things that just gotogether: Laurel and Hardy, salt andpepper, fish and chips – you don’tthink of one without the other. In thesame way the NFRC is launching acampaign to raise awareness of theFederation and to promote itsknowledge and expertise to thissector ‘Think roofs – think NFRC’.

As we all know, the importance of roofingdesign in architecture can’t beunderestimated. In the fast-paced world ofconstruction and ever-changing landscape oflegislation, it’s more important than ever thatarchitects and specifiers keep up to speedwith the roofing industry.

Improving best practice

Architects and specifiers play a pivotal role inthe design and specification of roofs androofing materials. So, if they take their eyeoff the ball it’s bad news for everyone. That’swhy the NFRC is on a mission to help themstay on top of their game.

The ‘Think roofs – Think NFRC’ initiativepositions NFRC as a single source ofknowledge and expertise for both architectsand specifiers. Ultimately it will lead toimproved best practice across the wholeroofing sector. From now on wheneverarchitects and specifiers think about roofs, the plan is that they’ll think of all the waysthe NFRC can helps them, such as:

• Comprehensive guidance and adviceon all roofing areas

• Technical assistance, engagementand support

• Access to information covering allroofing disciplines

• Updates on the latest developments instandards and legislation

• News on NFRC’s ongoing role inparliamentary lobbying and policing

What’s in it for me?

The campaign is also about the NFRC activelyencouraging architects to work in closecollaboration with contractors like you. It’sabout delivering smoother and fasterprocesses with cost-effective resultsthroughout the whole industry.

Working closely with architects and project managers reduces clients’ stress andhassle throughout a project, which in turnbrings peace of mind. Not only do theyprovide valuable detailed specifications, they help ensure that all tenders are like forlike and comparable, rather than a mishmashof all sorts.

Architects are already seeing the benefits ofthe ‘Think roofs – Think NFRC’ campaign.Looks like it’s a win-win for everyone.

Natural slate has graced the world’sgreatest buildings for

thousands ofyears. It

is one of the world’s oldest and mostcontinuously used roofing materials - and westill love it just as much today.

If you pay peanuts…

You might just end up with monkeys. Andnobody wants them on your roof.

With product andlabour costs

on

the heavy side, we all know natural slatedoesn’t come cheap. Having said that, anexperienced slater knows how to get the bestout of every single piece, minimising wasteand getting maximum value.

Not surprisingly, since the economy headedsouth, imports of cheap slate have been onthe up. And, while it may seem easy on theeye and your pocket at first glance, it cancause huge problems for you and your

business in the long term. If the price istoo good to be true then it

often riddled with inconsistencies andimperfections resulting in high wastage andlabour costs.

If your customer can’t stretch to the real thingit’s not worth taking a chance on dodgyslates. This is particularly true now there areother materials out there that give a betterfinish than inferior slates and won’t do yourreputation any harm either.

Progressive rock

Any slater worth his salt should be able totell from his customer’s budget whethernatural slate is right for the job.

If it’s not, then choose an alternative such asfibre cement or resin slates. They’re a muchbetter option than going for the cheap stuffwith all the problems that come with it.

Nothing better than the real thing

We all know there will always be cheaperslate available but you can’t beat naturalslate for a host of benefits:

• Waterproof

• Unaffected by normal extremes oftemperature

• Highly resistant to acids, alkalis andother chemicals

• Colour-fast and non-fading evenunder UV light

More than with any other roofing material, with natural slate you get what you pay for.Cut corners on labour and you might just getaway with it even though the result may notbe as beautiful. Cut corners on product andthe roof may simply not be fit for purpose.

Don't be a cheapslate – it rarely pays.

Gooddistributors are

worth theirweight in goldwhen it comesto guidance onindustrial jobs.

In Industrial Roofing, there’s no hiding poor installation

techniques or shoddy materials.Even the untrained eye can spot a badly fitted column

casing or badly made downpipepretty easily. A bodge job

simply won’t cut the mustard. But, who’s to blame?

Service?

Advice?

Where can you find it all?

INDUSTRIAL ROOFING

Serving the roofing and property improvement industry |31|

All the right notes, notnecessarily in the right order! We’ve all been there, trying to find all theright bits for an industrial roofing job fromloads of different suppliers. It can be anightmare. That’s why more and morecontractors are turning to distributors for helpand support.

A good distributor can be worth their weight in gold in guiding you - particularly ifyou’re inexperienced - through the earlystages of a project. A really good one? They’ll add extra value.

The problem, of course, is finding a reallygood one. Not all distributors are created

equal. You can’t assume the friendly man behind the counter is reputable, experiencedor ethical in his approach – and even thosethat are, can occasionally slip-up. Fortunately, most industrial roofing distributors are topnotch; they excel at sourcing the best andmost competitively priced products. They arealso experts in ‘hand-holding’ and giving youall the tip-top advice and support you need toget the job done right.

Distributors usually get involved with small tomedium sized jobs. A lot of the time this willbe with inexperienced contractors, but you’llusually get a better level of service, guidanceand support from a distributor than from alarger manufacturer.

For further information please complete the readerresponse card.

16ENQUIRY

Playing it safeThere’s always stuff that can go wrong.Whatever the size of the job, you can’talways guard against poor installation or badmaterials. But, that’s true whether you’regetting your stuff supplied from variousmanufacturers or from a third party.

What you can bank on is that people wantthe job done well and they want it donequickly. Customers expect you to deliver afinished unit that delivers high performance, longevity, and quality aesthetics. That needfor excellence isn’t something that’s going togo away.

When it comes to industrial roofing, themoral of the story is to play it safe. Chooseyour distributor wisely. A ‘one-stop-shop’solutions expert such as SIG Roofing meansyou get a solid and consistent supply chainthat gives peace of mind for everyone. All youneed to worry about is giving your customerthe best value you can. Simple.

INDUSTRIAL ROOFING

When industrial roofing jobs go pear shaped it’s often third-party distributors whocarry the can. By supplying inexperiencedroofers with the materials for the job, they’re then criticised for not followingthrough with the advice, support andtechnical help needed for a quality finish. But, is that the whole picture?

INDUSTRIAL ROOFING

If you want to be the best, and youwant to beat the rest, dedication’swhat you need. Or in the case of SRTimber make that ‘preservation’.

As we saw in the last issue there’smore to roofing battens than meetsthe eye: sorting, shaping, sizing, debarking, cutting, slicing, splitting, grading… there’s a lot that goes intobeing the best!

But, there’s no point creating great products ifthey aren’t going to last the distance. That’swhy at SR Timber preservation is the name ofthe game. And there’s no doubt the treatmentand preservation processes for SR Gold andPremium Green battens keep SR Timber rightat the top of their game.

Rather like teeth, timber can’t fight rot anddecay on its own. It needs some form of‘chemical enhancement’. Treating timberhelps to protect, strengthen and maintain its longevity.

(de)Moisturise

Before you can even think of startingpreservation work the moisture content of thewood must be at the correct level. This is sothe preservative penetrates the timber. Forthe average spruce this is about 30%, butpine needs to be a bit drier. Any more thanthat and the preservative won’t get into thewood. It’s a bit like slapping on a bit of Niveafor Men straight after the shower. It’ll justslide off your face. That’s why SR Timbercheck every pack of timber beforepreservation starts to be sure the moisturecontent is just right.

The technical bit

At special facilities in the Baltics SR use twodifferent sorts of preservative:

– SR Gold uses a specially formulated ‘clear’ preservative with the unique gold-coloured pigment

– Premium Green uses a copper-based wood preservative that colours the timber itself without adding any pigmentation

Both are applied by pressure impregnation viaa highly controlled process in a treatmenttank, before the battens are then shippedback to the UK.

Batten SR Timber show why they are world-beaters at making and preserving batten.

ROOFING PRODUCTS

It’s because they pride themselves ondelivering the best possible products thatperform at the peak of their powers for theentire life of the roof that SR Timber alwaysgive that little bit extra. They always makesure their battens have that bit more thanspecified in the BS 5534 roofing and tilingStandard.

We all know some buildings aren’tmaintained as well as they should be – andthat can mean even well-built roofs candevelop leaks or get damaged. SR Timber’spreservative treatment is designed to help thebattens live a long trouble-free life, keepingthem dry for as long as possible.

A breath of fresh air

After treatment, the battens are storedoutside in the fresh air for some time, beforebeing shipped to the UK. So, when thebattens arrive at their destination, theirmoisture content is still just right.

But, and this is the really important bit, onceyou get your hands on them you shouldn’t justleave them out in the yard unprotected.

If you store your battens in the open, coverthe top packs with something like a tarpaulinto protect from rain or snow. That way you’llavoid them getting saturated. You only needto cover the top of the packs but keep thesides and the ends free, so air can flowaround the timber to keep your battens at theright moisture level.

SR Timber insert a ‘spacer’ between everybundle of ten pieces to ensure consistentairflow throughout the whole pack of thebatten – all designed to make sure themoisture content level is maintained duringstorage and distribution.

So, it all starts with a tree.

Then, the humble batten goes on its epicjourney – from the sawmill, to the treatmenttanks, to arriving in your yard and finally ontoyour client’s roof.

It takes time. But with SR Timber you can besure your battens are truly fit for purpose –and that they’ll have a long and healthy lifeon your roof, come rain or shine.
