Dear Parents and Caregivers, Last weekend I was fortunate to witness our student’s receiving the sacraments of Confirmation on the Friday evening and their First Eucharist at the St. Francis Xavier parish mass on Sunday. Both rituals were celebrated by Archbishop Philip Wilson, our College patron. It was wonderful to see parents, relatives and friends coming together to celebrate this important event in the spiritual life of our students. The Church has always recognised the role of parents as the first educators of faith. In the introductory text from the Rite of Baptism of Children it states: Aſter baptism it is the responsibility of the parents, in their gratitude to God and in fidelity to the duty they have undertaken, to enable the child to know God, whose adopted child it has become, to receive confirmation, and to participate in the holy Eucharist. The sacrament of Confirmation allows each student to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit that is given to each of us at Baptism. This is the same Spirit that filled the Apostles with the zeal and courage needed by all who are to be public witnesses to Christ. Confirmation celebrates God’s presence in our lives as the Holy Spirit continues to guide, strengthen, and empower them to be witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ. The sacrament of Eucharist allows our students to be open and united to Christ, to express our commitment and love for God and for our neighbour, which expresses itself in action, which make us more like Christ. Funding for Catholic Schools We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment in her speech this week that funding to all non-government schools will be increased, however we remain concerned there are still no details about many of the settings of the funding model. We understand that a key concern for you as parents is the impact of any funding model on the education of your child and the school fees that will be required to pay for that education. We welcome the commitment to extra funding for our schools but we need to know the details and facts on funding as a matter of urgency so that we have a firm basis for our school planning and development into the future. Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Last weekend I was fortunate to witness our student’s receiving the sacraments of Confirmation on the Friday evening and their First Eucharist at the St. In the introductory text from the Rite of Baptism of Children it states:

After baptism it is the responsibility of the parents, in their gratitude to God and in fidelity to the duty they have undertaken, to enable the child to know God, whose adopted child it has become, to receive confirmation, and to participate in the holy Eucharist.

Thank you to Mr. Bruce Were, Mr. Rory Harris and Sr. Kanistal who prepared the students for the sacraments and Ms. Felicity Davies, Mrs. Louise Guthleben and the musicians who provided the liturgical music on the Friday evening.

Staff NewsMr. Noel Karcher is currently away in Rome attending a 40 years reunion of his group that studied in the Vatican. Mr. Karcher will have the opportunity during his reunion to meet with his group and Pope Benedict XVI.

Funding for Catholic SchoolsWe welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment in her speech this week that funding to all non-government schools will be increased, however we remain concerned there are still no details about many of the settings of the funding model.

Show Day Parents are reminded that the Show Day is next Thursday, 13th September. The College will conclude at 12.30pm at both campuses to allow the opportunity for families to attend the Royal Adelaide Show. Given the College is providing a half day we would appreciate it if students are not absent on other days while the Royal Show is occurring.

EREA (Edmund Rice Education Australia) CongressThis Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be the first EREA Congress. The purpose of the congress is to reflect on the success of the first five years of the EREA and to establish future directions. The congress will involve staff from EREA schools, Brothers, Board members, bishops, members of the ERN and Brothers internationally. Sandra Buchanan, Chris Mellow, Noel Mifsud and myself will be representing the college in Melbourne. Br. John Ahern will also be attending. He will be representing Rostrevor College.

Build the BridgeCongratulations to Corey Billows who has been selected from CBC to be involved in a “Build the Bridge” program in Perth working with new arrivals. He will be based in the Edmund Rice Centre for Refugees, about 100kms north of Perth, which runs support groups, classes and training for newly arrived refugees. The outcome of this experience will be greater knowledge and understanding in how to run effective services for refugees and this will support the “Build the Bridge” project in setting up a drop-in-centre for asylum seekers/refugees in Adelaide. Corey will be participating in this program with a student from Rostrevor and St. Paul’s College.

Underage DrinkingThe parents of adolescents in Australia are aware of the fact that alcohol consumed by young people in Australia presents as a major problem in our country. As we have seen in the media, there is a strong degree of pressure on parents to allow alcohol to be served at parties to students who are under age. South Australia is one of few States which does not have legislation prohibiting the serving of alcohol in a private home to anyone under 18. Those responsible for education in the Independent and the Catholic sector are fully supportive of legislation which would bring our State in line with those in the east and are working with representatives of SAPOL and the Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia in this regard. CBC has always made it clear to parents in the information we send home about our Formal, Graduation and sporting evenings that we do not want any of our well supervised functions to be followed by parties in which alcohol is available to minors.

Parents may be interested in a new book available written by Paul Dillion called “Teenagers, alcohol and drugs: what your kids really want and need to know about alcohol and drugs”. The book offers guidance to parents in determining when is the right time to start talking to students about drugs and how to reduce the influence of peer pressure. The book addresses issues such as: alcohol and parties, looking after friends, cannabis, other drugs and the effects of alcohol.

Counsellor’s Corner

PrejudiceNobody likes to be told they are prejudice. I like to imagine that I am not racist or snobbish or sexist but every now and then I find myself making judgements about people simply on the basis of their belonging to a certain group, rather than on what I know about their character. Such prejudice can not only diminish the quality of life for those people, but also it definitely diminishes my own growth as a person. Abraham Lincoln, first President of USA, has this wise solution for us - “I don’t like that person. I must get to know him better.” Christ puts it bluntly, “Judge not and you will not be judged; because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get.” (Matthew 7 : 1, 2) How often we find that when we get to know someone, they are entirely different from what we thought at first. St Paul urged the early Christians not to be prejudice, “...there are no distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, but all are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3: 28) We all have our faults and failings. At times we all offend others or get on their nerves. We all need to forgive and forget. When we can accept ourselves as we really are, knowing that God loves us as we are, then we can accept others as different, unique and loved by God. Then there is no need to be prejudice.

3INSIGHT

It was with great interest that I attended my first CBC sports day for many years last Tuesday. It was the first with the six new Houses. Obviously different boys have different talents and therefore contribute different to the day. There are events as diverse as Shotput and the 100m race. These special days in the school’s calendar give boys a chance to show these talents as well as to contribute to their House. I was placed in the Grandstand so I observed a myriad of activities on the track. Given that the junior boys were present there was often a sea of bodies in view. The throwing events were held at the back of the complex.

I was interested to see if each boy had a strong affinity to their House as in many schools this loyalty is very strong. I think that it is still developing at CBC and over time will grow. Eventually I hope that House chants and strong cheering will develop. Overall behaviour was good and many fine athletic exploits were witnessed. Congratulations to Smith House for scoring their first win after two years of dominance by Walsh. The House

names were my focus during last week’s visit to the Junior Campus. I was privileged to have known four of the six brothers who have Houses named after them. Br O’Brien was the first long term Headmaster of CBC and before my time. Br Walsh was considered the second Founder as he restored the senior class to the college in the 1940s.

Br Bourke I knew as an older man, he was Principal twice at CBC and once at Rostrevor. Br Smith was a great Science teacher at CBC and has the science laboratories named after him, he was a real gentleman. Br Hurley was a strong and strict teacher here in the 1950s and a coach of senior Football. Finally Br Marks was Principal of both Rostrevor and CBC and very dedicated to getting the finances right when in charge. All of them are good role models for our young men and it is good to see them remembered in the house names.

Finally I have been trying to help steer many of our boys to reflect on their actions when they make mistakes. It is good when parents can step back and let them learn from their errors. Part of growing up is making mistakes and learning and then going on to be a better person. When school and home work together this can happen.

Br Ambrose Treacy’s legacyThis term we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Br. Ambrose Treacy. Christian Brothers College was the first boarding school for the Christian Brothers in the world. Br. Ambrose Treacy travelled to the mid-north of the state collecting money and realised the size of this continent compared to Ireland and the need for establishing a boarding school. In the book “Patrick Ambrose Treacy: Christian Brother, Enterprising Immigrant” (pg 167 - 168) depicts the establishment of the boarding house in Adelaide.

Ambrose received a letter from Brother Thomas O’Brien in Adelaide asking him to come over to deal with some additional building developments. Before he sailed he went to Ballarat to complete the purchase of a house for the community. Then he took ship for Adelaide but not without a little drama. He almost missed the boat. As he was coming down the ramp in Melbourne he saw the ropes had been loosened and the boar was pulling out from the wharf. He ran quickly and managed to jump aboard. Writing in Adelaide, in his letter of 28 February 1881, he mentions that he has so far paid out £11,600 for the buildings, all of this obtained by collecting, apart from some amounts given by two or three of the communities. The collecting, in itself, was a mammoth undertaking. At Easter, the Wakefield Street school would take in boarders at the request of the bishop, Dr Reynolds.

All items can be left at the front office. Please help us help those in urgent need. Some ideas of how you can help:

In the archives collection we have a number of exercise books that students have used for their written work dating back from the 1880s through to the 1940s. In an exercise book belonging to Joseph Sullivan is a description of the Royal show dated September 17th, 1906.

The register tells us that Joseph was 14 in 1906, he had been at CBC for three years and that his father was a store keeper. The Show Holiday was important at CBC because the boarders were generally from an agricultural background.

The wonders of the show in 1906 included a gramophone playing records and beetroots from Port Lincoln that were two foot three inches (69cm) tall and eight inches in diameter (20cm).

The machinery exhibit included a waterfall that was an advertisement for Vice Roy Tea, complete with tea coloured water and a machine that was able to bundle corn together and tie it with string.

Joseph’s three page essay was submitted to the Brother who was his teacher and returned to him with no corrections or comments, just a date stamped across it. This was an indication of a fine piece of work; with classes of up to eighty students and teachers having to make corrections with nib pens and ink wells, no comments meant high praise.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Last weekend several of our students celebrated the Holy Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion at St Francis Xavier Cathedral. Both Sacramental masses were celebrated by Archbishop Philip Wilson and we as a College are indebted to him for the giving of his time to guide our boys through their journey in acceptance of the Catholic Church and receiving Jesus Christ for the first time in the Eucharist.

Thank you kindly to Mr Bruce Were, our Junior Campus Religious Education Coordinator and Sr Kanistal, our College Chaplain, for their spiritual guidance and leadership as well as class teachers, Mr Rick Mackereth, Mr Vincent Rignanese, Mrs Kate Younie for their continued support.

Our College Principal Mr Noel Mifsud sent along his words of wisdom and kindness stating “Young men, parents, grandparents and friends, while I am currently away on study leave let it be known that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you embark on this next stage of your Sacramental Journey. My prayer for you will be that God’s richest blessing will be with you tonight and always as you continue your personal faith journey.”

Mr Clarke (Acting Principal) and I echo these sentiments in wishing every boy our heartfelt congratulations in receiving the special sacraments for the first time and hope their spiritual journey in our Catholic Church will be fulfilling as they go onto discover themselves as the men God intend them to be.

As a College we celebrated our annual Sports Day at SANTOS Stadium. Our little R-3 boys had a modified program whilst competition was foremost on the minds of every Year 4-6 student with House teams trying to compete and win. As our numbers have been steadily increasing it has been necessary to divide the boys into 6 Houses.

Hurley, Smith, Bourke, Marks, Walsh and O’Brien. Next year all students in Reception to Year 12 will be expected to purchase coloured House T-Shirts and wear at House College Events such as Sports Day. Congratulations to Smith House for winning the 2012 Sports Day. With the Olympic and Para-Olympians fresh in our minds the spirit of sportsmanship was ever present at CBC Sports day.

Wishing you Gods blessings for the week ahead.

Dear Families and Friends

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Archbishop Philip Wilson and Monisgnor Robert Aitken who celebrated a wonderful Confirmation Ceremony last Friday evening at St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

As many of you would know last Sunday was Father’s Day. Father’s Day often becomes another opportunity for the commercial world to sell to the community.

I invite all members of our school community to take some time this week to honour the wonderful role of Dads and significant males that they play in the lives of our young boys.

In this weekend’s Advertiser there was a survey asking what were most critical function of being a Dad.

The results of the survey were that being a good role model was the most important function of a Dad.

Despite the stress of raising a family, balancing home/family pressures, supporting a partner/wife with her employment aspirations too were important considerations too.

Parenting is a tough business and it is important that Dads particularly take this responsibility seriously.

Some tips that I find useful:

• Accept offers of help. It’s OK to reach out and ask for support.

• Discover what helps reduce your stress and assists you to best care for your children.

• Listen to your children and involve them in planning things as a family.

• Parenting isn’t always easy. Share your experiences and skills with other parents – it can help you realise that you are not alone.

• Take time out when you feel stressed or upset –look after yourself.

• Parenting can be positive – notice the good times too.

• Make plans for enjoyable “family time” – this can help build close relationships.

• Talk about safety with your children. Talk about what being unsafe might look and feel like at home, in the community, online or at school.

• Make plans about what to do if they feel unsafe.

• Celebrate your children and their achievements, values and interests and support your children when times are tough.

Prayer for Dads

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honour them always with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Have a good week.

Made in the Image of God – Being Sexual StrandIn Term 4, classes will spend 3-4 weeks focusing on the Being Sexual strand of the MITIOG programme. It is important that you are aware of the content to be covered so that you are able to prepare and follow up with your child.

The Made In The Image of God (MITIOG) programme covers the strands of:

• BEING HUMAN

• BEING MORAL

• BEING CONNECTED

• BEING SEXUAL

The Being Human, Being Moral and Being Connected units have been taught in terms 1, 2 & 3. Listed below are the outcomes and content for the Being Sexual strand for Reception-Year 7 year levels:

Parents are more than welcome to come in and view more closely the Made In The Image Of God materials. We also encourage parents to take the opportunity to be involved with your children by talking with them at home and discussing any of their questions that may arise.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself if you have any questions at all in relation to the Made In The Image Of God programme.

There will be a Parent Information Evening for parents willing to know more about the Being Sexual strand of MITIOG on Tuesday 11th September 2012 at 6.00pm at the Flexible Learning Centre in the Junior Campus.

If you are interested in attending please return the following note to the front office to assist our administration.

Gospel Challenge: FaithMatthew 17:20

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

If you have faith you have everything. Trust the plan God has for us all.

He is good.

It has come to our attention that students are bringing in cup noodles for lunch and expecting boiling water to be supplied. Due to OH&S issues, we WILL NOT supply this service to our students. The risk of severe burning is an issue. Noodles are available for purchase from the Junior Canteen for only $2.00 and need to be ordered. This allows time for the Noodles to cool and be handled safely. We will refuse to fill Noodles from home for the safety of students.

VET Student ProfileMy name is Sam Wilson and for Work Experience I went to a farm in the South East, just outside of Naracoorte. Some of the tasks that I had to undertake for the week included lamb marking, fencing, slaughtering sheep for eating, spreading mulch, checking crops and sheep, transporting lambs to market and many other tasks.

I found the week to be a really enjoyable experience because I loved what I was doing. While I have had some experience with visiting farms before, I have never had such insight into their daily operations, and the range of jobs that need to be done to maintain a property. It was a really valuable experience because I am considering work in the agricultural sector when I leave school.

One of the really good things about the week was the country cuisine like the roasts (home grown) and delicious apple and blueberry pies.

Work ExperienceI would like to congratulate all of our Year 10 students for successfully completing their week of Work Experience. The feedback that the College has received from the placement providers has been overwhelmingly positive which is very affirming for our students and staff. Over the next few weeks we will profile some of the students and their placement experiences. The Year 10 cohort now begins preparations for their subject selection process, and the Course Counselling team will look forward to meeting parents and caregivers at the individual interviews we will conduct for each student during Week 9 and Week 10.

VETAs it is subject selection time for our senior students, now is the time for the boys to think about whether they are interested in undertaking a vocational pathway. The College offers access to a diverse range of vocational courses that can complement a traditional academic pathway through the SACE. The SACE recognises an extensive range of vocational, flexible and community based learning. If you would like to know more about the flexible learning opportunities at CBC, please contact me at the College.

Students need to ensure that their SATAC Reference Number for university and/or TAFE is kept in a safe place to be used when later responding to an offer.

Students are encouraged to apply for both University and TAFE if they are unsure of their success at this stage. TAFE applications are free this year, and there are no tuition fees for Certificate 1 or Certificate 2 courses.

football

Year 2/3 FootballCBC 7.6 (48) defeated Burnside 7.1 (43)

Last game of the season and we put last week’s loss behind us, the sun came out and it was a great day for footy. The game was very open and free flowing and both sides ran the ball well. CBC got out of the blocks early and looked to attack the goals and get a lead but Burnside held up defensively. The third quarter saw the boys lift their work rate and snatched a few good running goals but again Burnside answered, in the fourth both sides played well with Burnside sneaking a couple through our defence but we had done enough to hold them out. CBC played a good mix of offensive and defensive footy showing their strength at both ends of the oval.

It’s been a great year and the squad has done so well, 14 rounds and only 4 losses. We averaged 6.5 goals per game and I think you will agree the boys have finished the season much better footballers and team mates.

I would like to thank Ms Williams as Assistant Coach, I am sure she will make a great lead Coach next season. Also to the many people who have helped out over the season at the games and training. Thanks to Cosi and Wendy for the oranges every week. Thanks to all the Parents and Carers who get up every Saturday morning and come out to support the team. And finally to the boys who have put in such a great effort and I am sure will be a strong squad next season.

Goal Scorers: Blake McDonough (2), Matthew Adams (2), Samuel Curti (2), Toby Kay (1)

Best Players: The whole team today – Well done!
