How to Have your Best Year Ever

At the end of October, I had the honor of traveling to Memphis, Tennessee to attend the 21st Hinman Student Research Symposium at the University of Tennessee. The Hinman Trustees have financially supported the Symposium since it began and the President of the Society is invited each year to attend. The Symposium featured oral and poster presentations of research projects by dental students and graduate trainees from dental schools across the nation. Ninety-four students represented an all-time high of 51 dental schools in 30 states, the District of Columbia and

three Canadian provinces. The Symposium was also supported in part by grants from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the Procter & Gamble Company, the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Alumni Association, the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation and the Colgate-Palmolive Company.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Paul H. Krebsbach, President of the American Association of Dental Research (AADR) and Professor of Dentistry and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Krebsbach presented an overview of the exciting advances in developing bone regeneration to treat human diseases and injuries.

COMMITTEE(S) MEETING DATE LOCATION

NOMINATING COMMITTEE MEETING Nominating committee chairman, Pat Yancey,

announces that the committee will meet January 5, 2016 at the Hinman Executive

Office. If you would like to submit a name for nomination, please contact one of the following

members: Robert Towe, Brad Greenway, Max Ferguson, Evis Babo, Mark Sayeg,

Darryl McCullough and Ex-Officio member, Jonathan Dubin.

It is hard to believe that it is 2016 already. My mother always told me that the older one gets, the faster time goes by. So Happy New Year to all of our Hinman family.

As we continue to gear up for Dr. Jim Roos’ “best Hinman ever” in a couple of months, let us thank our staff for all they do by bringing them to our Membership Meeting on January 21st at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Program chairman, Dr. Clayton Davis, is bringing Mr. Bryan Dodge to speak about team building. People who have heard Mr. Dodge have told me that he is one of the best speakers they have ever heard. It’s a great way to start off the year.

Dr. Steve Hart gave a fabulous presentation at our November meeting. If you attended, it’s not too late to record your CE credits on the Hinman.org/society web site.

The year has been exciting and busy so far. I traveled to the ADA convention in Washington, D.C. with the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Hinman program teams looking to find new and interesting speakers for our future meetings. And back on the home front, I have to thank Dr. Jane Puskas, who is not only in preparation for her 2017 Hinman meeting, but also chairing our

Branding is a marketing process that seeks to create a unique name and image of a product in the consumer’s mind. In the past few years we have sought to brand the Hinman Dental Meeting as a high quality meeting in terms of continuing education with superior hospitality at an exciting destination. All Hinman members must be committed to providing the experience for our guests that reinforces the Hinman brand.

The 2016 Hinman Dental Meeting is upon us and now is the time to ‘hunker down’ and produce another “Best Hinman Ever!” I know our membership is up to the challenge for our guests to ‘Discover the Difference’ at our meeting.

The Hinman staff, led by our executive director Sylvia Ratchford, has worked hard putting everything together for 2016. They truly do an incredible job and deserve much credit. THANK YOU!!!

I appreciate all the preparation our committee chair men and women have put forth so far. I hope that each Hinman member has an interesting and enjoyable assignment. Remember you must sign up and work eight hours during the meeting to be eligible for the General Chairman

& President’s reception at the Delta Flight Museum. There is so much for all of us to learn and enjoy with each year’s meeting.

I am excited about Hinman 2016 and the fabulous line up of speakers and events we have planned. Tremendous thanks to Brad and Kate for serving as program chairs for this year. We are doing a few different things to complement our tradition of excellence in our education program.

We have ‘mini-residencies’ in geriatrics and cone beam technology, as well as a pediatric partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. These courses have an expanded format that will allow interested attendees to gain a deeper understanding of these phases of dentistry as they continue to grow in importance.

We are again committed to attracting students and young dentists with our G.O.L.D. program, career connections and free or reduced cost courses.

We have a wide variety of hands-on and participation courses as well as the popular sought after lecture topics from the top presenters in dentistry. Speakers from all over the country love our meeting and are always excited to present. I feel they have “Discovered the Difference” and our reputation for exemplary hospitality is something we all should be proud of.

This year we are mixing up our social events as well. Friday night we are combining the dental auxiliary party and the dentist reception. Thanks to creativity and organization by Laura Steele, “Hinman’s Night Out: Dancing in the Dome” will

include dentists, students and staff in a more casual atmosphere at the Georgia Dome. The night will feature live music with ‘Starstruck,’ a Las Vegas style show band, who will play popular favorites for all ages. There will be food and drinks, games, prizes and tons of fun. Be sure you register for this exciting new event and also promote it to your dental friends and colleagues. Let’s make this a BIG celebration!

Registration is underway. Please look over this year’s awesome pre-registration publication (thanks to a major effort from Lynn Leidel). Take time to thoroughly familiarize yourself with 2016. I think you’ll find interesting and useful topics and courses that you can use as you promote Hinman.

Don’t forget to save your dental purchases until the meeting. Our exhibitors are major partners in the success of Hinman. Special thanks to Wendy McGar, our exhibits manager, who is the best at what she does.

We should all take pride in our Hinman membership! Talk to your friends and colleagues about our meeting. There is fantastic value for CE, the unmatched hospitality provided to our guests, the great things to do in Atlanta and the valuable deals available on the exhibit floor.

It takes every one of us to make our meeting successful. Each job is just as important as the next and each of us are responsible for the “Hinman Brand.”

Thanks to all!

Hinman and You! The Brand, the Experience!

Hinman Society task force. She is putting in some long hours with a dedicated group of members helping to shape the future of your Hinman Dental Society. While I am thanking chair people and members of our society committees, I can’t forget to show appreciation for our truly fabulous Hinman staff. The ladies are so talented and so dedicated that it makes our volunteer efforts almost effortless.

DR. CHARLES BARRONDr. Barron graduated dental school in 1946 and joined the society in 1954, making him a 52 year member of the society. He was drafted in 1942 and served in the reserve and attended dental school concurrently. He served in the military, then moved back to Newnan, GA, where he grew up. He practiced there for 44 years, retiring in 1989.

One of his fondest memories while in the dental field was when he attended a symposium at Walter Reid Hospital on preventative dentistry in the early 1960s. It was an eye opening course for him on preventive care & he realized the importance of Fluoridaization of water. He came home after this course and convinced his brother, who was on the city council, that they needed to work together to bring fluoride to Newnan. After much time and effort, Newnan became the fourth city in Georgia to have fluoridated water, 26 years before Atlanta. Having once made false teeth for a nine-year-old, he knew this was a huge advancement in the prevention of cavities and was instrumental to bringing it to his city.

Dr. Barron has volunteered throughout the years on various society committees, including the reception, table clinic

and hotel committees. He has been so impressed to see the Meeting grow throughout the years, recalling the first meeting he attended was held at the City Auditorium. One of his favorite speakers was Dr. Surindar Bhaskar, who later became a major general of the Army (highest medical rank). He and Dr. Barron became friends and he visited him on several occasions.

Today, Dr. Barron still lives in Newnan. He is 93 years old. He is keeping his mind sharp and enjoys auditing courses at the local UGA campus in Newnan. He is taking an astronomy class and plans to continue with other courses once complete. He also enjoys visiting with his two daughters, Sarah and Carolyn (his wife, Louvenia, and one of his daughters, Vinnie, passed away from cancer). Dr. Barron describes dentistry as “the best profession in the world” and he hopes practicing dentists enjoy it as much as he did.

DR. HAL RAPERDr. Hal Raper remembers the 70th anniversary of the death of President Franklin Roosevelt.

One of our members, Hal Raper, has been reminiscing recently about his memories of President Roosevelt & his last visit to Warm Springs before he passed away.

He was lucky enough to live four houses away from the President when he lived in the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA. Dr. Raper enjoyed petting President Roosevelt’s Scottie dog, Fala, when he would take walks by his house. His family was there because his mom and dad worked for the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, established by FDR.

His family hurried to the train station when they heard of his arrival. They fought the crowds and secured a spot 100 yards away from the station. The President arrived in a little blue Ford convertible, sitting in the back seat. They knew how sick he was, as he usually waved to the crowd, but this time, he only stared ahead. This was the last time Dr. Raper actually saw the president.

On Thursday, April 12, FDR had his portrait painted in the morning. He was supposed to attend a minstrel show later that day, but suffered a massive stroke in

the afternoon and passed away. Dr. Raper’s mother informed him of the President’s passing that evening and they listened in with the rest of the country news on the radio.

The next day, the Rapers were able to view the funeral procession, that would end up at the train station, from a front porch. There was a huge crowd present, including many soldiers. They heard the muffled drums coming, which were followed by a hearse, that pulled up next to a ramp at the train station.

The pallbearers, from each of the military branches, struggled to carry the 600 pound bronze casket up the ramp. Once placed in the train, the flag-covered casket could be seen through the windows and viewed by millions for FDR’s final train ride to Washington. The train pulled out of the station without a sound, gliding away–no whistles, smoke or steam. FDR’s final resting place was Hyde Park, New York.

We hope that you will join us for this year’s society annual meeting at

GET TO KNOW YOUR SOCIETY– SOCIETY TASK FORCE– David Anderson, Editor As our Society continues to move into its second century, a forward-looking task force has been formed to review the current function of the society and establish parameters, guidelines and goals for the future. The Task Force has had three meetings thus far, with the overall topics of society membership, society events and functions and the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting.

We have discovered through the task force that there are some important benefits and obligations of your society that we need to raise awareness of to the membership. We will detail these topics in the upcoming issues. Also, from these meetings, some interesting numbers and trends about the society have emerged, which include:

The number of Hinman members has shown steady growth and is currently at 850. Since 2007, we have averaged 32 new members per year. Factoring in the loss of members, we will be close to 1,000 members within 10 years.

The average attendance for the September and November membership meetings over the last 10 years is 187. At the January meeting, including the staff, the average is 394. The benefits of attending are three hours of CE, a fabulous meal and parking. The Trustees offset the expense for our members by paying more than half of the cost. Your next opportunity will be January 21 at the Fox to hear speaker, Bryan Dodge.

Every member is required to help at the meeting in March. Choose a committee and serve eight hours. Many members do more than this. The day(s) that you work, parking and breakfast and/or lunch is provided. This is also your ticket to the General Chairman and President’s Reception at the Delta Museum.

You joined this group because you see the value in associating with other dentists. You joined this organization because you see the need to assist in providing world-class education to others in our profession. You joined this society because you see the betterment of the future of dentistry through the donation of scholarship money for the next generation of dental care providers. The Hinman Dental Society is truly a special group of people. Let’s make it better.

A survey will be sent out soon to all of the membership. Please take the time to complete it. You are forming the future of the Society for the next 100 years.

A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Bryan Dodge began his career in agricultural sales after graduating from the University of Nebraska. His desire to excel led him to become an avid student of success habits and leadership principles. After an award-winning career in sales, this same avid study, now a lifelong passion, changed his life and eventually launched his speaking career. Early on, he started a company that promoted sales seminars throughout the United States and Canada. His company grew to more than 60 employees. Relocating to Dallas, he expanded his business, filling stadiums in major cities with events featuring the most sought-after national motivational personalities, with whom Bryan shared the speaking platform. After 12 years, he sold this successful business to focus on sharing his own knowledge and experiences with audiences directly. He is now one of America’s most sought-after speakers, making over 250 appearances in the U.S. and Canada last year. At all of his events, he stresses the importance of keeping professional life and personal life in balance. Bryan practices what he teaches when he says that he goes home to his most important job: being an involved and dedicated father and husband. He and his wife, Margaret, have three children. He has been very active in coaching soccer and football and working with kids in YMCA programs. Outside of his love for reading, Bryan’s hobbies are mostly outdoor activities such as hunting and skiing.
