Congratulations to Stan Bevers who retired from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension on August 31. Stan was
our economist in District 3, Rolling Plains, for just over 27 years. Stan and his family plan to remain in
Vernon, where he is starting a new ranch consulting business and spoiling his two grandchildren.
Congratulations, Stan and enjoy the good life!
Monday afternoon Fred Boadu and I attended a curriculum meeting with representatives from the College,
Biological and Agricultural Engineering and Nutrition and Food Science. The purpose of this session was to
review a proposed new degree among our three departments to better prepare students for careers in the food
industry. The proposed degree would be offered in McAllen at the new Texas A&M campus and on main
campus. It appears the degree will be named Global Food Systems Management to reflect the emphasis
areas of food and nutrition, agricultural systems, agribusiness management and the international dimensions
of business in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. I’ll present more on this at our faculty meeting on
September 21.
Monday evening I joined the other department heads in the college to wish a farewell to Gary Ellis who
relinquished his duties as head of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences on September 1. Gary will remain
on the faculty conducting research and teaching duties. Scott Shafer is the new department head of RPTS.
Please thank Gary for his service and congratulate Scott on his new role as you see them around the AgriLife
Complex.
Luis Ribera testified before the US House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture Tuesday. He
provided an overview of US agricultural trade opportunities and challenges with Cuba. Great job Luis and
thanks for your service on this important issue.
Wednesday afternoon I had the opportunity to attend the Promotion Reception for newly promoted faculty
at the Memorial Student Center. It was a great event with more than 100 in attendance. Ariun Ishdorj was
recognized for her promotion by Provost Karan Watson. Congratulations Ariun!
REMINDER: This is Campus Safety Awareness Week at Texas A&M. As a reminder, please remember
that we still have bats on campus, and as a result, you are likely to come into contact with one. If you spot a
live bat that cannot fly, call 845-3411 immediately to report it. This animal could have rabies. Thanks.
Have and great weekend! And, BTHO Auburn!!!!!
