Commander’s Message

The summers heat is here and I hope everyone is enjoying all that summer has to offer. Since the schools closed for the

holidays, boat traffic has increased substantially. The number one safety issue is having and wearing a life jacket. Over

80% of boat related drownings in Ontario happen within a short distance of shore and the victims were not wearing a

lifejacket. When our volunteers conduct Recreational Vessel Courtesy Checks, they stress the importance that life jackets

have to be within reach of the people on board. Tucked away in a locker willnot help anyone in an emergency.In

recognition of the challenges facing residents of small northern communities, CPS-ECP has launched a project to send new

or gently used life jackets to these communities. If anyone wants to donate any life jackets, please contact me at my email

at Commander@peterboroughsafeboating.org. I will arrange to pick up your donation and ensure it gets to head office.

I want to thank the Squadron members who came out to the Marshland Centre to support our efforts to thank everyone for

their support over the last 60 years. It takes a great team to see one vision thrive over 6 decades. It was an honor to meet

several of our past Commanders that helped chart our current course. I want to thank everyone on the Bridge for their input,

dedication and hard work as we planned this event. The fact that representatives from all three levels of government, the

OPP, Peterborough Police, Trent Severn Waterways, CPS-ECP, and several media outlets accepted our invitation is a

testament to the impact Peterborough Power Squadron has made over the last 60 years.

I look forward to working with members by continuing our excellent programs. I am always looking for people to get

involved. Your participation and new ideas will ensure that we will continue to thrive for years to come.

Power boats ready to roar on Peterborough’s Little Lake

The Ontario Power Boast Racing Association will return to Gravenhurst with races Aug. 10-11 and conclude the

season on Peterborough’s Little Lake at Del Crary Park on Sept. 14-15.

The Ontario Power Boat Racing Association continues to expand in its third year.

The OPBRA started in 2017 by bringing boat races back to Peterborough after a 25-year absence. In 2018,

they added an event in Gravenhurst on Lake Muskoka. This year, they've expanded to three events starting in

North Bay on Lake Nipissing on Saturday and Sunday.

They will return to Gravenhurst Aug. 10-11 and conclude the season on Little Lake at Del Crary Park on Sept.

14-15. For a second straight year, the OPBRA will also send a contingent of racers to the Outboard Drag Boat

Association World Championships in Jasper, Tenn., Oct. 11-13.

OPBRA president Brent Valois said they're in negotiations to add a fourth event along the Toronto waterfront

in August 2020.

"We're being cautious with growth and exposure and change," said Valois. "We have grand plans but if you

institute too many changes too quickly you can scare some people away. We are all about the spectator. If

there is nobody coming to watch the event, or a low number of spectators, we won't come back to that venue.

We want to provide entertainment and engage the spectators.

"For the racers, we have to keep it fun and interesting. As I have told everyone in our association, this is not an

all-on, full-out race. It's an event. We put on a show and safety is paramount but if the crowd isn't happy,

OPBRA isn't happy. We want to see people on land from kids to older kids having fun and cheering on their

favourite driver."

Valois said one event per month from June to September is an ideal Ontario schedule. Eventually, they'd like

to see races in every province from Prince Edward Island to B.C.

"We'd provide an avenue for any other organizations which wish to put events on all across Canada. We want

to offer our expertise and experience," he said.

They're not only expanding their schedule, the OPBRA is expanding the number of race classes to attract more

participants.

Last year, they offered drag racing in Formula, Lake Racer, Modified and Outlaw divisions, as well as oval

racing for T750 and T850 classes.

Now they've added two new drag divisions, Stock Class and Triples. Stock Class is an unmodified V-6 or V-4

engine on a stock as purchased boat.

"It's for people with a performance or cottage-type ski boat to have a class they can participate in. They don't

have to have a quote-unquote race boat," said Valois. "It's for the boating enthusiast who has a boat that is a

little bit better than your average cottage runner. A boat with a bit of muscle on the lake who likes going

quick. We give them an option to do so in a safe environment."

Triples is for three-cylinder boats.

"It's for someone who might have a smaller boat with a three-cylinder on it to participate. They don't have to

have a 300-horsepower V-6 to get out there," he said. "There are a lot of 13- to 14-foot lightweight boats with

three-cylinder engines that are attainable to build. This gives someone with one of these lightweight boats an

avenue to show their stuff and see how they can do against others."

There will also be inboard and personal watercraft demonstration classes.

Last year, the Peterborough races were their largest, with 58 entries. This year, organizers hope the new

classes will push them over 70.

Also new this year is a partnership with Cogeco's YourTV. They'll broadcast all three events on tape delay and

produce a 30-minute documentary on the season to air in the fall.

Boating 2 – Beyond Boating Basics

More than just your Boating Licence The PCOC makes sure you have immediate navigation and safety skills but it’s just the beginning of what you should

know when you get on a boat. In the second of our Boating Series, you are introduced to the art of navigation,

anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. This course

also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include towing, trailering

and a check list for layup and launch.Your PCOC helps to get you out on the water and this course will ensure that you

return home safely !

Suggested Prerequisite: Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
