Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, As I write this Paul and I are on our way to the Pomona Car Show. We spent a few days in California visiting the Ronald Reagan library and going to see the giant Sequoia trees. We enjoyed both but by the time we got to the top of the mountain to see the trees, my stomach was doing flip flops from the twisty, curvy roads. After walk-ing around a bit and some fresh air I felt a little better, but unfortunately we had to return the same way and I felt even worse by the time we reached the bottom. That was a once-in-a-lifetime sight for me, but I need to say it was worth it. The Sequoias are awesome. We will not sell anything or pass out catalogs — this one is just for pleasure. Tomorrow, after the car show, we will begin our trip home. The weather in Minnesota has been great. No snow and temps reaching 50° some days. It has been easy for the guys and gals to get to work and has also been easy on the heating bills for a change. I should have some pictures from the car show for the next newsletter, but I hope you can send me some pic-tures of your cars for the newsletter, as I need some. Time to go — have to get up tomorrow — ‘til next time .......

A Power Steering Option My recently-restored 1954 BelAir Convertible looked great, but steered like a tank in spite of having all new steering components, tires and two computer alignments. As I wanted to both drive and show the car, I had to do the best I could with original equip-ment, so I decided the answer to my steering woes just might be installing a power steering kit. Easier thought of than accomplished. I had no idea of all of the differ-ent parts needed to make the switch.

Obviously I had to obtain the power steering box and pump which I found in “Parts-Line.” The seller knew more than I did and sent me the parts he had along with a print out from Authentic Automotive that lists most everything needed for such a swap. It also contains interesting engine stamping and plant infor-mation. That list and a numbered parts picture pertain-ing to my particular application, a 1954 Powerglide, follows:

A Power Steering Option

Now Showing

For 1953 only, engine stamping prefix designates power steering option. For example, “LAE” prefix denotes a 235 six with 3 speed and power steering built at the Flint engine plant, while the prefix “LAR” denotes a 235 six with 3 speed and power steering built at the Tonawanda engine plant. The prefix “LAS” denotes a 235 six with Powerglide and power steering built at Tonawanda. There were no 235 sixes with Powerglide and power steering built at the Flint plant. In 1954, the engine stamping system was changed completely, and did not reflect the power steering option. My first step was to send the steering box and pump unit to a professional rebuilder. I restored the idler arm and made that switch along with exchanging the driver’s side motor mount. With all components on

hand and the box and pump returned, I removed the standard steering column, levers, brackets, wiring and replaced all with their power steering counterparts, made adjustments to levers affecting proper operation of the neutral safety switch, back-up lights, shift indicator and transmission were completed and with a little fine tuning the car was back on the road. The results were beyond my fondest expectations and well worth the effort and expense. Thanks to National Chevy and “Parts-Line” for providing me with all parts and contacts for this most rewarding project.

Here’s some pictures of my 1950 Chevy. Really like the headers - had to do a little grinding on them - second bolt from the ends (the long ones) covered bolt holes, just a little grinding took care of that - and of course grinding the original Chev washers to fit. I don’t really notice any difference being cold blooded - rims very nice - has a terrific sound! Just a little louder than the split manifold - which is good because they were kinda quiet with the glass packs.

Thanks for all your help!

Cover CarHi, I just want to share with you some pictures I took of my 51 Styleline Deluxe today. Its a mild custom....shaved door handles, gas filler and antenna . It has the original 216 in-line with a 3 on the tree manual. The car was from California (where it was built) and had no rust on it. The brake lines all came free easily and I never broke or stripped a bolt...nothing like a Michigan car after 5 years. I’ve ordered a boatload of parts from you. I just finished putting the interior in..the headliner being the most difficult. The kit was very easy to use. All I had of the interior when I bought the car 4 years ago was bare seat frames and headliner bows. Thanks again for offering good quality products for this series of Chevy’s. Kevin
