With the joint branding, ABB and Rhaetian Rail-ways are highlighting their close collaboration spanning nearly a century. Rhaetian Railways celebrated its own 125th anniversary in 2014, and its Albula and Bernina lines were added to the list of World Heritage Sites by

UNESCO in 2008 as masterpieces of railway engineering. Additional events and celebrations of the ABB anniversary will showcase ABB’s deep bond with Switzerland throughout the year. Among other things, ABB will be a prominent guest at the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel—the longest railway tunnel in the world—at the beginning of June 2016. UKAS Extends New ISO/IEC Accreditations to BASEC for Its Cable Fire Testing ServicesThe British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) of the UK, the inter-national leader in product certification services for electrical, data and signal cables and ancillary products, has ex-tended its United Kingdom Accredita-tion Service (UKAS) accreditation of its UK laboratory to cover a broad range of cable fire tests. This extension to BASEC’s scope under ISO/IEC 17025:2005 includes the large-scale vertical ladder test used for the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR), EN 50399, and full vertical lad-der test range to the IEC 60332-3-21/25 series as well as many other familiar cable fire tests. These cable fire tests include small-scale circuit integrity tests in its three re-configurable fire test chambers, including a range of small-scale IEC 60331 series fire tests, the long-established BS 6387 tests, tests for fire alarm and emergency lighting cables to BS EN 50200 / Annex E and BS 8434-2, and the enhanced attack test for larger cables BS 8491. Dr. Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive at BASEC, said, “With these new ac-creditations, BASEC is demonstrating its capabilities and commitment to the industry by investing in high-quality personnel and equipment. Accreditation of the EN 50399 test, building on our existing accreditations to EN 61034, EN 60754 and EN 60332-1-2, will al-low manufacturers and suppliers to confidently start their preparations for

the introduction of CPR for cables in Europe with accredited tests. We are already using our facilities for regular BASEC cable approvals testing, and also for accredited testing for a range of customers in specialist areas such as marine, rail, fiber optic and communica-tions cables.”BASEC has also upgraded its UKAS product certification accreditation to the new ISO/IEC 17065 international stan-dard and has enhanced the scope of its UKAS management system accredita-tions under ISO/IEC 17021 to include cable distribution and wholesale.ISO/IEC 17025:2005 international stan-dard specifies competence and quality management system requirements for labs that provide testing/calibration services. BASEC’s laboratory was awarded ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredi-tation by UKAS in 2014, and it is one of the highest levels of recognized quality any testing/calibration lab can attain.

AFL receives three patents for new fiber optic technologies

AFL, Spartanburg, SC, USA, a leading global fiber optics manu-facturer and service provider, has been awarded three patents for new technologies used in the enhance-ment of AFL’s Optical Connectivity and Apparatus (OCA) products.

Ted Lichoulas, Engineering Man-ager; Roger Vaughn, Product Tech-nology Manager; and Wink Cour-chaine, Senior Engineer received a patent for an Optical Fiber Event Sensor that allows continuous monitoring of network assets such as fiber distribution cabinets.

Rich Cubala, OSP Product Spe-cialist and Craig Henderson, Re-gional Sales Manager, secured a patent for a splice tray rail system. Responding to market demand for better organization of splice trays, the team implemented a rail system that allows for easier access.

Kheng Seng, Director of Supply Chain for OCA, received a patent for a secured fiber optic connect-ing system and method using offset fiber position in a single-fiber connector. The combination of the fiber’s offset distance from the fer-rule’s longitudinal center axis and its angular offset relative to a key on the connector housing provides a unique position achieving secured mating for a pair of connectors.

TE Connectivity opens its first automotive manufacturing plant in Africa

TE Connectivity Ltd, a world lead-er in connectivity, has opened its first manufacturing plant in the Tangier Free Trade Zone in Africa. TE said

February 1, 2016that the inauguration of the new ca-ble assembly plant is an important milestone in its strategic partnership with the Moroccan government to join the automotive ecosystem. The collaboration is part of the govern-ment’s strategic industrialization and acceleration program, which has established the automotive sector as one of its top priorities for growth. With the support of the Ministry of Industry team and the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA), TE established the facility and started operations in less than one year.

A recent celebration marked the integration of TE Connectivity within the cabling ecosystem.

“We are very pleased to wel-come TE to the region and we look forward to further expanding our strategic partnership,” said Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Minister of Indus-try, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy. “TE’s investments are in line with the objectives set by the Industrial Acceleration Plan. These investments are an important step for the development of the automo-tive industry in Morocco. They will generate new jobs, and foster both a greater integration of the sector and the replacement of imports. They will also create opportunities for local partners and suppliers.”

TE’s Morocco site serves the growing needs of automotive cus-tomers in the greater Europe, Mid-dle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

R&M Says IT Trends Demand New CablingR&M, the Swiss developer and provider of cabling systems for high-end network infrastruc-tures, expects double-figure growth to continue in the 2016 financial year in some market segments. Data Center opera-tors in particular are expected to show increasing demand for fiber optic cabling system solu-tions. R&M anticipates growth of 20% per year in this segment. “The increase in data traffic means that Data Centers are having to invest in higher per-formance network architectures and in the consolidation of their infrastructures. Over the next three years, these trends are set to influence the industrial sector to an extent never before seen by the market,” said R&M CMO Andreas Rüsseler. International market studies say Cloud applications are among the driving forces for this. The number of firms using IT services from external Data Centers is growing. Cloud Data Centers are already responsible for 70% of IT work around the world. And most data from the “Internet of Things” will end up back in Data Centers, which must enhance their infrastructures and provide networks available permanently.

Philips Unveils PoE Lighting Installation at ClemsonRoyal Philips, Somerset, NJ, USA, the global leader in lighting, has unveiled a first-of-its-kind, large-scale lighting in-stallation at a major university campus that leverages Power over Ethernet (PoE) as part of the recently opened Watt Family Innovation Center at Clemson University. As a founding innovation partner of the center, Phil-ips implemented a PoE-based indoor lighting system combined with LED lighting to provide flexible work spaces that encourage collaboration between faculty and students, optimize space management in the facility and improve energy efficiency. This new lighting solution will deliver up to 70% in energy savings compared to similar buildings using conventional lighting. The intelligent PoE system de-livers energy savings by gathering his-torical and real-time anonymous data from each lighting fixture to determine when a room is being used. Occupancy sensors trigger lights to turn on and off,

saving additional energy. The Philips EnvisionManager, an ad-vanced lighting control system, enables all the lights to be controlled from a single, tailored software console. The system supports remote access and web-based control letting occupants control their lights via any authorized computer, smartphone or tablet. This ensures the right amount of light is provided only when, where and how it is needed.
