Stop the germs, stay healthy, WASH YOUR HANDS! Keeping our hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy, especially in Jakarta. Many germs that cause diarrhea and respiratory infections can be spread by not washing our hands with soap and clean, running water and this is because: People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into

the body through the eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick. Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks during its preparation. Germs can

multiply in some types of foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick. Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, like handrails, door handles,

keyboards, table tops, or toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands. Are you paying attention to how you are washing your hands? Clean running water should be used with soap. Soap lifts dirt and microbes from the skin. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, a palm length below the wrist, between the fingers and under the nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice). The temperature of the water does not matter. It is important that you thoroughly dry your hands after rinsing. While soap and water is the most effective way of reducing microbes on your skin, hand sanitizers can also be used as they do eliminate some types of germs. The hand sanitizer should contain at least 60% alcohol and should be rubbed into the skin until your hands are dry (do not rub off excess). Common brands include Dettol® and Purell®.

So remember…wash your hands frequently and remind your family members to do the same! Wash before and after food preparation, before meals, after using the restroom, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing and after any other time in which you think you touched a frequently used or contaminated surface. Always carry an alcohol based hand sanitizer in the event where water and soap are not readily available. Hand hygiene information obtained from the Centre for Disease Control, USA http://www.cdc.gov

What’s Happening? Keeping you up to date with health promotion activities!

Pedometer Challenge– Walk to Bali! The Walk to Bali Challenge continues! Don’t forget to pick up your pin once you have reached each ‘destination’!

In the Spotlight- FX ‘Adi’ Adinugroho Adi is a Registered Nurse who has been working at the US Embassy clinic since 2011. Adi studied his degree in Yogyakarta and continued his professional development in Darwin, Australia. Currently, Adi is in involved in training First Aid to the US Embassy guards as well as other local embassy employees. He is originally from Magelang, Central Java (near Yogyakarta) where his family still reside. During his time off from work, Adi likes to fresh water fish and visit his family back home.

Did you know? Hand sanitizing stations are located throughout the Annex and in certain areas of the Chancery.

Health Unit Notice: Starting September 14th, SJHU will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Her duties have included looking after chil-dren aged from 8 weeks of age up to teenagers, preparing food, cleaning, washing clothes, shopping and dropping chil-dren to their various activities. References are provided. Please call Ibu Narti direct on 0812191704241 or 087887509596. Ibu Sutarni Ibu Sutarni is an honest, reliable and diligent Pembantu. She has worked with our family fulltime for almost three years, at the Pakubuwono Residence, and I recommend her highly. She provided excellent cleaning, washing, ironing, shopping and cooking services. Our children are teenagers, so she did not have nanny responsibilities but she interacted with them beautifully. She was trustworthy and was available to assist them when needed. Please contact Ibu Sutarni on +6281218207377. You can also contact me on [email protected] if you would like to confirm this reference for Ibu Sutarni. Ibu Ella (Nanny) Ela worked for our family for three years from 2012 to 2015 as a nanny. I could not recommend Ela more highly. She is incredibly creative and spends hours with our 5 year old daughter doing craft and games. She is fun, patient but firm when necessary. She is very responsible, trustworthy and mature and her English and communication skills are excel-lent. Ela is available from July as we are leaving Jakarta at the end of June. If you are interested please contact her directly on 0813 26963346 or Helen on [email protected]. Ibu Wati Ibu Wati is seeking work as a live-out pembantu for two days per week commencing late July 2015. Ibu Wati has worked for us since early 2014 and has proven to be a reliable and con-scientious pembantu who handles her daily duties with ease. She is trustworthy and easy to work with. Her English is lim-ited but communication is possible. If you would like to know more, contact me at [email protected] or contact Ibu Wati directly on 081288479635.

She is currently working daily at The Peak, Sudirman and will be available to work on a part time basis from mid-August 2015, and flexible work hours can be arranged. Please contact Angela on 08121041590 or email [email protected] if you’d like more information or to meet Nini. Ibu Atun Ibu Atun has an easygoing personality and accomplishes her duties around the apartment with a smile and a laugh. She worked for us for four months while our permanent pembantu was away having a baby. During this time Atun proved reliable and trustworthy. Her duties included cleaning, washing, ironing, limited household administration and cooking. Her English is limited but we managed to understand each other. Atun can be contacted directly on 081315868012. If you would like further information contact Garth on 08119420276. Ibu Eti Ibu Eti has worked for us for almost two years. We have highly valued Ibu Eti's loyalty and reliability. She has extensive experience serving in expat homes and is highly professional. In two years, she has never missed a day of work or arrived late. She is always smiling and cheerful. She loves young children, and she is also very kind to our large black lab. She kept our house tidy, and she is very good at pressing dress shirts. Ibu Eti worked for us two full-days and three half -days a week. She would prefer to work in the Peak apartments as she is currently employed part-time by a Peak resident, but she is open to considering other locations. If interested, please contact her directly at 085882526609. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. Ibu Teti Teti has worked for us for the past 3 years as a part-time cleaner. Teti is very hard working. She is friendly, polite and gets on with her work quietly and effectively. Teti does all of the “heavy cleaning” (mopping, bathrooms etc.) but has also helped out with other household duties (including washing, ironing and food preparation) when needed, and has baby-sat on occasion. Teti is looking for part time work (3-5 half days) as she has another job in Kebayoran Baru. Please contact Rachel on 08119592550 or [email protected] if you would like more information or would like to meet our staff. Ibu Nini Part Time Ibu Nini worked for us for nearly 4 years, working three morn-ings per week at The Peak. (continues to next column)
