Chaplain’s Chat This week we were delighted to have Peter Burke (Director of Mission and Anglican Community Engagement for Anglicare-SA) speak to us in our Chapel Service. Peter shared with us photos of his recent trip with ABM to Egypt visiting Episcocare projects (their name for Anglicare) as well as holy sites in Israel and Palestine. Peter also shared about the work of Anglicare. ABM LENT APPEAL RESULT I am pleased to announce that we raised $2,045.80 through our ABM Lent Appeal this year. Thank you to all who contributed. The funds will go towards a Youth Engagement Program for remote Northern Territory communities and a Positive Parenting Program in the Solomon Islands. You can learn more at www.abmission.org ANGLICARE SA We also value our ongoing relationship with Anglicare and a reminder that SPW has an Anglicare clothing bin at the rear of the chapel and clean good quality used clothing can be placed there at any time. FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION Please note information and reply forms later in The Weekly for Admission to Communion preparation (Year 3-5 students) and Confirmation (Year 6-7). Preparation starts in Week 4 and The Admission to Communion and Confirmation will take place at the final Chapel Service of the term. Archbishop Jeff Driver will be attending.

Sports News SPORTS RESULTS Please refer to our website for the latest sports results, under School News (top left of the Home Page in the yellow bar). These will be updated regularly. FOOTBALL Round 1 Football information has been distributed and the remainder of the draw will follow as soon as we receive it. NETBALL Netball draws have been distributed and will begin next week. SOCCER Soccer draws will be forwarded as soon as they become available. We have to wait for all schools to add their home game times to the SDJSA website, so sometimes this can take a while! Please note that this Soccer season we will be attempting to find umpires for all home fixtures. As we have 7 teams, it won’t always be possible, so we will then need to continue to rely on parents to take on this role. The first named team on all draws is the Home team. So if SPW is second, then this team is playing away. Please let me know if your child is sick or injured and unable to play a fixture as some teams have very tight numbers. DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY - TUESDAY 19 MAY To be selected, students are required to attend Run Club and/or Beach Run (refer to The Week Ahead for days/times). JP FUN RUN - FRIDAY 22 MAY This year’s event will take place between 9.30am and 10.15am on the 500m circuit between the Nutter Thomas lawn, Braested and Mackenzie Ovals. The purpose of the Fun Run is to encourage involvement in physical exercise as an enjoyable way of promoting healthy lifestyles. Children will be encouraged to run and walk as many laps as they can in a 20 minute period. The Fun Run is not a competition and all children receive stickers for participation. Children will need to wear their PE/sports uniform, runners and sunscreen. They will also be required to bring a clearly named water bottle. SPW actively encourages parents and friends to join their children on the Fun Run. Year 7 students will also join in to guide and have fun alongside the Junior Primary children. A coffee van will be on site for the time of the event.

MAKING THE PARTRIDGE STREET KISS AND DROP ZONES SAFER

Enter the Partridge Street car park as left turn only from Partridge Street. Avoid straddling the bike lane and footpath, when entering Partridge Street (hence avoiding traffic

infringements). Exit Partridge Street, left turn only. Create two lanes of traffic once inside SPW grounds:

Left hand lane is pick up and drop off zone (yellow marked lines). Right lane is rotating lane (blue lines marked below).

Instruct your children to stay on footpath and pick up children from left hand lane only. Move car forward should further spaces become available in front of you. Stay in car and keep moving if child is not present.

Dear Parents/Caregivers This term we are offering an opportunity for students from Year 3 to Year 5 to learn more about Holy Communion and be admitted to Communion. Within the Anglican Church the usual process of initiation is to be Baptised in infancy, admitted to Communion at approximately 8 years of age, and be Confirmed in the teenage or adult years. To be admitted to Communion a person must be baptised (in any Christian Denomination) and be at least 7 years of age. Preparation for Admission to Communion will be three elective sessions, 2.30 to 3.30pm on Friday in Weeks 4, 6 and 8. The participating students will be admitted to Communion at the whole school Communion Service on Thursday 25 June (Week 9). Participating students might like to invite Sponsors/Godparents and special friends to this service. The sessions will introduce the following topics: 1. The Start of Something New The Last Supper began it all 2. We Are What We Give Communion as Giving and Thanksgiving 3. One Big Everlasting Party The Symbols and Communion 4. Review and Rehearsal (During Week 9)

These sessions will be a good opportunity to learn more about the faith which underpins this Anglican School and specifically about the Christian faith at the heart of the Holy Communion Service. It is envisaged that each session will commence a topic that can be discussed further at home. At the conclusion of the sessions students are eligible to be admitted to Communion within the Anglican Church. This is done through the Chapel Service on Thursday 25 June which includes a presentation of certificates. Participation in First Communion is voluntary. It is also understood that some families will prefer their children to go through these rites in their own church, whilst others may not wish to pursue Admission to Communion at this stage. As always, students who participate in Communion at their own churches are welcome to receive Communion here in Chapel. What if you are not baptised yet? There may be students who would like to be admitted to Communion who are not yet baptised. Baptism can be arranged with the chaplain. This may occur at the Admission to Communion service. Students being baptised would need to arrange one or two sponsors/Godparents. Can we still do Confirmation? There is an opportunity for Year 6 and 7 students to do Confirmation at the school this term also. The Confirmation will also take place in the Week 9 Chapel Service, with the Archbishop of Adelaide, Dr Jeffrey Driver, attending. Admission to Communion recognises that children are ready to take Communion at an earlier age than they are ready to be Confirmed, whereas Confirmation is about taking responsibility themselves for the promises made on their behalf at their baptism. Please fill in the attached reply form and return it to me via the Front Office by Monday 11 May. Please feel free to contact me on [email protected] or ring me at the school, if you have any questions. Rev Andrew Mintern School Chaplain

Preparation for Confirmation Years 6 and 7 WITHIN THE ANGLICAN CHURCH - 2015 AT SPW

PREPARATION FOR CONFIRMATION 2015 Confirmation in the Anglican Church is a rite of passage where a candidate confirms the vows made at their baptism. It is accompanied by special prayers from the Bishop, confirming the person’s faith. It is a chance to develop a more mature understanding of faith and accept it for yourself. Confirmation is available for students in Years 6 and 7. Preparation sessions will be conducted by Father Andrew on Thursday lunch times in Weeks 4, 6, 7 and 8. This year’s Confirmation Service will be held in our Week 9 Chapel Service for the term, Thursday 25 June, with the Archbishop of Adelaide, Dr Jeffrey Driver, attending. If you would like your child to be prepared for Confirmation, please complete the registration form below and return it to the Front Office by Monday 11 May 2015. If you have any questions please contact Fr Andrew [email protected] or by phone at the school. APPLICATION FOR CONFIRMATION (Year 6/7 students) Please note that Baptism is the only prerequisite for being confirmed (i.e. it doesn’t matter if you haven’t done the Admission to Communion course). Please provide a copy of your child’s baptism certificate. If your child has not been baptised and you would like to arrange this, then it may take place during the Confirmation Service. Please speak to Fr Andrew about this for further information.
