Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
A Monthly Newsletter of Lamb of God Lutheran Church
“Let us then approach
the throne of grace
with confidence, so
that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help us in our
time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Many people have asked me about our
recent trip to Europe. It was wonder-
ful and it was refreshing. To pass the
time on the long plane ride, I dug out
and brought along one of my Luther
books that I have wanted to spend
time in. It is always good for a Lu-
theran pastor to read up on Dr. Luther.
Little did I know the treasures of wis-
dom and faith that I would find. Lu-
ther wrote an article entitled: “Against
Latomus,” a university professor who
took issue with Dr. Luther on matters
of faith. Dr. Luther did his usual sa-
ber rattling to Latomus, but the gem of
this article is Luther clarified two pre-
cious words – grace and mercy. This
clarity helped to reground me as a
Christian, husband, father and pastor.
Dr. Luther explained grace as God‟s
favor. He said this: “Upon a person
such as you God‟s favor shines. It
shone the most when His Son re-
deemed you from your sin and you
death at Calvary. And God‟s favor is
upon you every day. Think of it, my
friends, God‟s favor is on you.” What
an awesome God!
“Mercy,” says Luther, “is God acting

in love on your behalf and in your best
interest, because you are incapable of
helping yourself.” In this Dr. Luther
opens the Scriptures to show the reader
God‟s mercy at the cross, God‟s mercy
in forgiveness and the many other
ways God is moved to care for you.
Wow! What a glorious God!
The times are a changing. We are in
the final leg of the interim journey. A
call committee has been appointed.
Soon names will be gathered from you
and from the district president, and
then one day soon, every member will
be asked to gather and decide upon a
name, a pastor.
God‟s grace and mercy is present
through all this process. That is a great
comfort. It is God who brings the sta-
bility and the presence one is really
looking for. God‟s Word. God‟s
promises. God‟s assurance. All of that
is there.
Waiting with patience is rarely at the
top of anyone‟s to do list. So to pass
the time, do what God wants you to do.
The writer of the book of Hebrews
says, “Let us then approach the throne
of grace with confidence, so that we
may receive mercy and find grace to
help us in our time of need.” God‟s
favor is upon you. God has and will
grant you His mercy in this time of
need – at the call of a pastor.
May God keep you in His care.

Our Executive Director
Lamb of God‟s Call
Committee has begun
meeting!
Our Call Committee
began its work on June
26. The committee‟s
first action was to add
one member – and bail
me out.
As most of you know,
Pastor Augie and I keep in close communi-
cation. He and I talked just before he left for
his vacation to Europe and I asked him if he
had a preference for who should represent
the church ministry on the committee.
We talked about several great candidates,
but he finally gave me a name – Sheryl
Pfeuffer.
Most of you know Sheryl. She‟s a long-time
member of the church and has an infectious
laugh that fills a room. But she‟s also a hard-
working member and has served as the con-
gregation‟s treasurer, has served tirelessly on
the Altar Guild and participates in the music
ministry. She‟s also been our church‟s dele-
gate to Faith Lutheran High School‟s board
of directors for many years.
The error of leaving her off the list of Call
Committee candidates rests squarely on me
and she graciously accepted my apology
when I called her after the Voters Assembly
meeting.
When the committee met, I explained what I
had done and asked it to add her as a mem-
ber. The vote was unanimous.
I think God‟s will intervened in the decision
because a few minutes later, Sheryl was
unanimously selected to chair the commit-
tee.
Rick Velotta
Executive Director
I‟m extremely enthused about this group.
It represents a cross-section of our member-
ship. There are five women and four men.
There‟s a nice blend of long-time members
and new-to-LOG members. Some have had
some experience on call committees and for
some, this is their first time. Some are young
… and some are younger.
Three members of the Call Committee served
on our Interim Committee, which, at the Vot-
ers Assembly, gave its final report and pro-
duced a list of the traits our church seeks for
our next pastor.
All members of the committee possess a
great spirit and heart for our ministry and I
am confident they will work diligently to find
the right person to call to Lamb of God.
I asked them to work at their own pace and
that the right selection was more important to
the church than a speedy selection.
I also asked them to be transparent in their
actions and to give updates to the congrega-
tion on their progress.
Also attending the first meeting was Pastor
Bo Brink, who officially becomes our circuit
counselor as of July 1.
Pastor Bo will be the spiritual guide of the
group and the committee will have the re-
sources of our District leadership.
The members of the call committee are: Sher-
yl Pfeuffer, Fred Giese, Sandi Ohman, Randy
Lee, Meredith Binnie, John Spatharos, Jacqui
Bransdon, Tom Lisiewski and Lisa Baaske.
Please keep all of them in your prayers as
they take on this important work for our
church.

Jonathan and Julie Muhly, Serving the Lord in Russia Bio
Rev. Jon and Julie Muhly serve
the Lord as LCMS missionaries in Eurasia and reside in Warsaw, Poland. Jon is the area
facilitator of LCMS work in Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia. In
this capacity, he is working with Lutheran churches, including our two partner churches
in Russia, and other emerging Lutheran church bodies in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz-
stan and Mongolia. His main responsibilities are to enhance their ability to reach out to
non-believers, to support the churches’ efforts to mature in Christ, and to provide theo-
logical resources. These efforts are achieved through training, teaching and coordinating
work with the leaders of the Lutheran churches.
Born in Lodi, Calif., Jon graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theology from Concordia
University, Portland, Ore., and completed a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. He completed his vicarage through missionary service in Rus-
sia. Julie (Goecker) was born in Seymour, Ind., and earned a bachelor’s degree in educa-
tion from Concordia University, River Forest, Ill. Jon and Julie’s children are David, Na-
thaniel and twins Hannah and Rebecca. They consider both St. Peter Lutheran Church,
Lodi, Calif., and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour, Ind., their home congregations.
Jon and Julie previously served as LCMS missionaries in Cieszyn, Poland, from 2000 to
2002 and were based in Moscow, Russia from 2005 to 2010.
Prayers
Please pray for the Muhlys in their language learning and cultural adaptation — that lan-
guage and culture may not be hindrances in their ministry. Pray for wisdom and guid-
ance for Jon as he works as the area facilitator. Pray for our partners in Russia, that they
would be bold and persistent in its witness to the Gospel. Pray also for the maturity of
these developing churches, for its leaders, pastors, deacons and deaconesses. Pray also
for their children — that they would continue to grow healthy and strong. And finally,
pray for the people of Russia, Georgia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan who do not
yet know Jesus as their Lord and Savior that God would soften their hearts and prepare
them for the Gospel.

Ephesians 4:32 New International Version (NIV)
Be kind and
compassionate to one
another, forgiving each other,
just as in Christ
God forgave you.
I read the following article some time ago and
saved it as I often times do with things I read. It
made me stop to think about how I spend my days.
Hope you enjoy it.
You Are a Winner! Imagine you hear that you are the winner of
$86,400 each day for the rest of your life. Every
morning, that amount will be deposited into your
account for your use. However, this prize has rules
– just as a game has rules.
The first rule: Everything you don‟t spend during the day will be
taken away from you. You many not transfer to another account
or give it away. You may only spend it. At midnight, your bank
will open another account with $86,400 in it for that day.
The second rule: The bank can end the game without warning.
At any time it can say it‟s over. The account will be closed and
you will not receive a new one.
What would you do? You would buy everything you ever want-
ed, right? You would buy for your friends, family and even peo-
ple you don‟t even know, because you can‟t possibly spend it all
on yourself.
Actually, this game is reality. Each of us is in possession of such
a magical bank. We just can‟t seem to see it.
The magical bank is life. Each morning we awaken to receive
86,400 seconds as a GIFT of LIFE, and when we go to sleep at
night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. What we have-
n‟t „lived up‟ that day is lost forever. Yesterday is gone. Each
morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your
account at any time – without warning.
These seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in
dollars. So what will you do with your 86,400 seconds?
Think about that and always think of this: Enjoy every second of
your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.
Take care of yourself. Be happy and love deeply. Start spending
today.
Hope you are enjoying your summer and spending your time
wisely and happily.

Just as parents are cru-
cial to a child‟s formal educa-
tion, the role of the parent is as
essential in the spiritual growth
of our young. Of course, most
adults are continuously learning God‟s word and
may feel unqualified to foster a child‟s religious
needs but there are many ways to address this
issue. Much of a child‟s education occurs through
observation. Adults often transmit hab-
its, mannerisms, and more importantly,
values via the simple everyday actions
one does.
Regular attendance to worship
is one of best habits we can instill in
the next generation. Over time, chil-
dren can discern the value parents put
in making it a priority to worship in
awe with others. Taking your children
to church regularly can create a life-
time value, but one does not have to
limit themselves to just worship.
When is the last time you attended a bible
study? Coming closer to God goes beyond a
Sunday service. Have you ever had to answer
your child‟s question to why they have to go to
Sunday school and the adults do not? Making it a
habit to study God‟s word aside from a sermon
also can promote the youth‟s spirituality. Attend-
ing bible studies can set a great example for chil-
dren. Besides encouraging your kids to go to
church and attend Sunday school, set an example
and get engaged with a bible group.
John Spatharos,
Director
Finally, you can also get involved and
inspire your young ones to do the same. En-
courage your child to fellowship with other
Christian kids. The Boys and Girl Scouts, a lo-
cal Key Club chapter, volunteering for church
events and, of course, Lamb of God‟s youth
group are a few available options. To go back
to a previous point, you can facilitate this by
setting an example. Perhaps, volunteering to-
gether is a superior alternative!
The upbringing of our young
is possibly God‟s greatest blessing.
Most child experts agree that the
greatest influence on impressionable
young minds is the parents. Our en-
couragement and guidance goes be-
yond the academic realm. The spir-
itual growth is just as important. The
great thing is we do not have to do it
alone. We have a great family here at
Lamb of God to call upon when the
need arises. If you have questions,
Pastor, a lay minister, the office staff, or any of
the Church Council members would be pleased
to point you in the right direction.
With God‟s blessings,

The Bible was written over a 1500-1600 year period
(1500BC - 100AD) in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic
& Greek) by about 40 authors living in 10 different
countries. 2,930 different people are depicted in the Bible
in 1,551 places.

What a Convention! Our
delegates, other ladies from Lamb
of God and a couple of our men
attended and enjoyed the beachside
venue. Yes, we were right on the
beach. But “His Living Water…
our Joy in the Lord” (based on
Ps. 126:3), our Convention theme,
resounded loud and clear inside the
hotel with illustrious speakers of the Word and those
filled with joy from this spirit-filled occasion. Rev.
Dr. Larry Stoterau who spoke on the theme of “joy”
in the opening service, along with his wife, remained
with us the entire weekend. Other speakers included
Ventura‟s Mayor, Mike Tracy, our National Jr. Pas-
toral Counselor, John Heckmann bringing greetings,
Keynote Phyllis Wallace and Bible Study Leader,
Linda Reiser, with our own District‟s Rev. Johnny
Lopez leading in joyful music. With great joy and
inspiration we drank in the “living waters” of the
Pacific Southwest District‟s 34th Biennial Conven-
tion of the Lutheran Women‟s Missionary League.
We set a new Mission Grant goal and voted in the
new recipients for this biennium. Thanks be to God
for such a gathering of spirit-filled attendees, repeat-
ers, and new ones, including the wonderful young
women who are eager to continue being a part of the
LWML. We look forward to working with our new-
ly-elected leaders as we “serve the Lord with Glad-
ness.”
A couple of other highlights of the Conven-
tion was the silent auction, a most popular “sleeper”
and the Saturday Night “Luau” featuring island-style
talent and a “squeaky clean” comedian who kept us
in stitches. Real wholesome entertainment!
Yes, we are on summer hiatus, but we encourage
all of you to keep our mites flowing for our Mis-
sion Grants.
Our pre-fall kickoff Potluck meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, August 28 in the Fellow-
ship Room, 6:30PM. We will introduce our offic-
ers to all new attendees as we review our activities
already in the planning stages.
First, note that our Zone’s (Desert Red
Rock Zone 31/82) EC/Board Meeting will take
place here at Lamb Of God on September 22,
with our Local LWML ladies hosting it. The fol-
lowing week, we are planning to hold our annual
Yard Sale. Be aware that the date has been
changed for our Yard Sale, now to take place on
Saturday, September 29. You will be receiving
more information on the Sale; however, we already
know we will need lots of volunteers to assist us in
the setups and cleanups, as well as helping out
through the day. Your assistance will be sorely
welcomed. Please watch for the date(s) of our
LWML Sunday Weekend in early October and
prepare to attend our Zone‟s Fall Celebration to
be held at Trinity Lutheran, St. George, assisted
by the Cedar City LWML on Saturday, October
27, 2012.

almost entirely by gifts and grants. However, the
need for additional financial support remains
great. The LWML is providing $50,000 to assist
two of the fifteen international graduate students
for which significant financial assistance is need-

for each student. These funds will allow the stu-

training to serve as future leaders of church bod-

people who have not had the opportunity to hear
the Gospel message in the context of their own
language and culture. These future leaders and
educators are sure to have a significant and en-

church in today‟s world, by boldly proclaiming
Christ‟s Gospel in the context of their own com-
munities and leading and teaching others to share
the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Publicity and promotion of any or-
ganization comes in many ways. One
of the most positive and effective
ways in which we have been able to
publicize our church and school is
through our very popular and success-
ful Vacation Bible School. This year
our VBS will be conducted from July
30th to August 3rd. Volunteers are needed to ensure
this continues to be a showpiece for the kids and their
parents. If the Lord directs you to assist in this event
please contact Jolene Hawkes or the church office.
Even though summer is here and we all try to hiber-
nate away from the heat, events are still happening at
Lamb of God. The best place to find out what is hap-
pening around our campus is of course to regularly
attend church. The next best is to regularly check our
great website which includes the church calendar.
Events and information are also circulated on emails
and in our monthly newsletters. To make sure you
don‟t miss out on what‟s happening, use all the ave-
nues and tools available to
you to keep abreast of every-
thing going on in and around

The Board met on May 21, 2012. The next meeting
will be held June 18, 2012 and will not meet again until
August. Next year enrollment is tentatively at 1436 stu-
dents which could change by the beginning of the
school year. Below is a list of numbers for each grade.
We had a great Graduation at Canyon Ridge with 142
2012 Graduates. As many of you know, Courtney
Burns left Lamb of God but we are very excited at Faith
to have her on as a Counselor. Other new faces this
coming year at Faith are Abbie Kuehn (Spanish), Grant
Rolfsmeyer (MS Math), Taylor Friedel (Science), Greta
Greiske (Spanish), Tim Jeffries (PE & Wrestling
Coach), Dan Smith (Resource), Daniel Zeigner (Music),
and Corky Fields (Strength and Conditioning). Other
changes coming for the 2012 – 2013 school year are the
logo change and name change. For years, the Principals
have stated we were not a Junior High but a Middle
School. That has been legally changed to Faith Luther-
an Middle School & High School. Also, the logo was
stated by many as too busy for 2013 times. Modern
simplistic is now the thing so our new logo reflects that.
The signs in front of the school will be changed and
other logo and name changes will take place over the
years – too much of an expense to do it all in one shot.
Permanent bleachers have been added to the football
field and a new Banner program can be seen in the
parking areas and courtyard. This Banner program is
being done as a fund raiser with funds going to the Tui-
tion Assistance funds. Solar panels have been placed
on top of the roof but additional panels are being placed
in the parking areas – like they have done in our school

“But to each of us grace has
been given as Christ apportioned it.
This is why it says: “When He as-
cended on high, He led captives in
his train and gave gifts to
men.” (What does “He ascended”
mean except that He also descended
to the lower earthly regions? He who descended is
the very one who ascended higher than all the
heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) It
was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be
pastors and teachers…” Ephesians 4:7-11

Why does one serve?
Does one serve to gain status or
recognition? Does one serve to
gain forgiveness or faith? The
answer to all those questions is
no. Now here is another ques-
tion to ponder. Can one have
faith without works?
The number one reason
why people serve is joy. If
laughter is the best medicine then joy is the best
disease. Let your joy for the Lord and service to
him be contagious.
God tells us to give with a grateful heart
but we need to serve with a grateful heart as well.
When we serve with a grateful heart, it is an ex-
pression of our faith shining through. God placed
us here to join in fellowship, reach out to others,
and share the gospel. We are saved through grace
alone but because of that grace we are able to ac-
complish all our good works.
Lamb of God Lutheran Church and School
has accomplished great things such as providing a
high quality education, bringing Christ to those
families who may not have heard it otherwise,
spreading the joy of reading to children from un-
derprivileged families and providing food and
warmth for those who needed it here in the Las
Vegas Community. Around the world, we have
brought the love of Christ to millions of people
through the Malaria Project and countless other
missions sponsored by LWML and the Luther-
an church at large but there is more to do. If
you receive joy from baking or cooking join a
fellowship team or help in the kitchen during
Vacation Bible School. If you receive joy from
working with your hands then the property
board maybe for you. If you enjoy planning
and attending parties we would love for you to
join us at the auction. Besides these examples,
many other ministries and boards exist that
could benefit from your time and God given
gifts.
Water your faith and
let it grow by answering
God‟s call the way Samuel
did, “Here I am, Lord, send
me.” God has placed us
here at Lamb of God to
serve and be served. Share
your joy with others and
watch the faith grow.
So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:17

“The Language of
Flowers” by
Vanessa Diffen-
baugh! It‟s the story
of Victoria, a young
girl raised in the fos-
ter care system who
is unable to get close
to anybody.
The foster care system releases Victoria on her
eighteenth birthday and places her in a six-week
temporary home with instructions to find a job.
Victoria ends up sleeping in a public park
where she plants her own garden. She is soon
discovered by a local florist who recognizes her
talents in arranging flowers and choosing flow-
ers for customers that will touch them in a spe-
cial way. Victoria knows the “language of the
flowers” and the message they send to the cus-
tomers giving and receiving flowers. Her gift
in helping people deal with their problems
makes her a successful florist, but can success
bring her happiness?
THEN, a mysterious vendor at the local flower
market who shares Victoria‟s love and under-
standing of flowers reaches out to her and
changes the course of her life. He also inspires
her to question what is missing in her life. Her
life takes twists and turns that force her to con-
front a painful secret from her past. In the end,
she must decide if the risk is worth taking a
second chance at happiness.
This is another book that you won‟t want to
put down once you start reading it. Find cop-
ies in the Fellowship Hall. You‟ll learn the
“language of flowers” and look at flowers with
a deeper understanding of the messages they
send.
