Welcome to the 2017 Bay Bridge Boat Show!

Despite a cold and sometimes snowy mid-March, we are fi nally reaching the high holy days of a Chesapeake spring: Warming temperatures, March Madness, sock burning, boat splashing, Rockfi sh opening day, and anticipating the opening of boat shows in and around Annapolis. April 21 marks the opening of the 35th annual Bay Bridge Boat Show on beautiful Kent Island in the Bay Bridge Marina at the east end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. A great place for a boat show, a gorgeous time of year on the Eastern Shore, and a powerboat show that has grown dramatically over the past few years.

The Bay Bridge Boat Show, the traditional kickoff of the boating season on the Chesapeake, will display over 350 boats ranging in sizes from comfortably small to luxuriously large. Find your dream jon boat or infl atable or your blue water cruiser to circumnavigate the globe. Paddleboards, jet boats, small fi shing skiffs, center consoles, express cruisers, trawlers, weekend cruising boats, sport fi shers, pontoon boats, and every other boating platform imaginable. Each year, I’m impressed with how much enjoyment this show provides and how it transforms me into an overgrown boating kid in a boat candy store again. It features:

We are pleased to welcome you again this year to the Bay Bridge Show. If you haven’t visited the show in a few years, you will be impressed at the breadth and depth of the offerings, both in the water and on land. Most local dealers and brokers of quality boats have increased their level of participation in this spring show. New boat lines are being introduced to the Mid-Atlantic, innovative technologies will be unveiled, boating services of all kinds will be available, and the camaraderie of boating enthusiasts will be in the air as boaters gather from around the Chesapeake, the Mid- Atlantic, and as far away as Michigan and North Carolina.

Fly Fishing LessonsJoe Cap and Bill O’Brien of Shore Tackle and Custom Rods will

illustrate fly fishing techniques and demonstrate how to cast a spinning rod. With 26 years of combined experience in building fishing rods, they will explain the value of custom

built rods, and weather permitting, walk customers through the fundamentals of wrapping guides (eyelets). Be sure to visit

Shore Tackle at F24 on the Promenade.

Hinckley Yachts Introduces Certified Pre-Owned Program.Hinckley’s service yards and brokerage components support a certified pre-owned program for the after-market that has eluded other builders.

Portsmouth, RI - Buyers of previously owned Hinckleys can now get what buyers of previously owned luxury cars have been enjoying for years: a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program that offers extended warranties and the assurance of knowing their purchase has been factory maintained. “Many Hinckleys that reach the used boat market have not only been built by Hinckley, but they have been maintained throughout their life by our own staff. We know these boats, we know that they’ve been properly serviced, we represent them in the marketplace, so our confidence in them is very high,” said Hinckley CEO Peter O’Connell. “Extending specific warranties to a new owner is easy for us, and it feels like a good way to welcome a new owner into our brand family.” O’Connell made the announcement at the Hinckley Owners Rendezvous at Ocean Reef in Key Largo, Florida over the weekend. The first certified pre-owned Hinckleys will appear on the brokerage market this month.

In order for a Hinckley to qualify for CPO status, it must have been serviced in the company’s seven service operations, or in a yard authorized to service Hinckley products. The boat must then undergo inspection and be listed for sale with a Hinckley-owned sales office. There is no program cost to the seller or buyer of the certified pre-owned boat.

The warranties provided by the program vary according to the age of the boat. Platinum coverage, for boats less than five years old, provides a lifetime hull and deck warranty and a powertrain warranty for the balance of the original manufacture’s, plus two additional years. Gold coverage, for boats 5-10 years old, provides a hull and deck warranty for 12 years from the original date of build, plus two-years of powertrain coverage. Silver coverage provides Hinckleys over ten years old a one-year powertrain warranty.

“Hinckleys already retain their value well when resold, and have among the lowest depreciation rates in the industry. We think that the certified pre-owned program will further enhance value retention. Owners whose boats are about to come on the market as part of the program are excited about the prospects,” said O’Connell.

C&D CanalAs you slip between the protective jetties marking its entrance from either the Delaware River on the east or Back Creek from the Elk River on the west, there is little to indicate the magnitude of effort which was and is the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The C&D Canal opened for business in 1829. At that time it had a waterline width of 66 feet, a bottom width of 36 feet and a depth of 10 feet—the present chan-nel is 35 feet deep.

The canal, connecting the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, is government-owned (supervised by the Army Corps of Engineers) and toll-free. Of the five bridges crossing the canal, four are fixed with a minimum clearance of 135 feet. The remaining bridge, the railroad lift bridge at Summit North, has a vertical clearance of 133 feet when raised, 45 feet when down. The span is kept up and lowered only for train crossings or for maintenance. Closings are announced on channel 13, the working channel for commercial activity on the canal.

A couple of key things to remember while transiting the canal: First, keep a careful lookout for freighters and tugs towing barges. They can be remarkably quiet, so check astern frequently. Second, be mindful of the current, which average 2 to 3 knots and change direction during high and low tide through the channel. The flow is eastward during the interval from low to high tide there; west-ward from high to low tide. (Check the Reedy Point tide table for tidal information.)

The channel is marked with buoys and lights from each entrance, and the system reverses itself at Chesapeake City, the only town on the canal. Between the Delaware entrance and Chesapeake City, red mark-ers are on the north side and green on the south. From the Elk River to Chesapeake City, red markers are on the south side and green lights on the north.

Marine traffic control lights are located at Old Town Point Wharf (Maryland) and Reedy Point (Delaware). A green light indicates that the canal is open to traffic; a red light indicates that it is closed (as is the case during dense fog, for example). It’s wise to stay out of the middle of the canal in case you run into an emergency—a stalled engine, per-haps. A large ship looming around the next bend can neither stop nor maneuver around an incapaci-tated craft.

Inside the canal, the only facility for boaters is Summit North Marina, located just below the railroad bridge on the north side of the canal. Summit North offers fuel and slips for transients.

Transiting the canal under sail between Reedy Point and Welch Point is prohibited. Vessels pro-ceeding with the current have the right-of-way—though deeper-draft vessels with limited maneuver-ability trump current direction. At night, the entire canal is illuminated with amber lights located about 140 feet from the edge of the channel.

Pilots embark and disembark from ships on the north shore at Chesapeake City. Keep clear of their launches. The dispatcher monitors channel 16. Marinas on the canal also monitor 16 and use 9 as their working channel. Harbour North Marina, located in the Elk River near the western entrance to the canal, offers on-water boater assistance (for fuel, engine problems, etc.) in the C&D and Elk River areas, The service is available seven days a week. Chesapeake City

Chesapeake City serves thousands of recreational boaters every year. The small scale of the town, with its shops and inns and casual and fine din-ing, makes it a charming place to explore on foot. The access point is along the canal’s southern side

through Back Creek Basin which carries depths of 10-12 feet on average, though the entrance is sub-ject to periodic shoaling. To starboard, just beyond the entrance, is a floating public dock where boaters may stay for free for up to 24 hours. The dockmas-ter monitors VHF channel 13, or can be reached by phone at 443-350-2442. Continuing to port, you’ll find limited dockage at Chesapeake Inn (mostly for shallower drafts) and some anchoring space with good holding.

On the other side of the canal, at Chesapeake City North, you’ll find plenty of docking, fuel, a res-taurant and a great view of the canal at Schaefer’s Canal House, which sits directly on the canal between the pilot’s station and the highway bridge. When docking anywhere here, be mindful of the strong current, and, when anchoring, allow enough room to swing.

The C&D Canal Museum occupies the original pump house and engine house of the old canal. It is a short walk from any part of the waterfront. Visitors can follow a sidewalk that leads around the anchor-

age basin or the path from the dock on the basin’s northeastern corner where small boats may tie up temporarily. (The dock lies to the east of a public boat launch.) The museum offers an in-depth look at the history of the canal and includes displays of much of the early machinery used to operate the locks.

Between mid-April and mid-October, the tour boat Miss Clare provides ferry service between the south and north shores of the busy canal. Pedestrians not only can get a ride aboard Captain Ralph Hazel’s workboat-style vessel, but are also likely to pick up some local lore from the lifelong city resident at the helm. Boaters can catch the ferry at the town dock at the mouth of Back Creek basin on the south shore, or at a dock that lies at the foot of Lock Street on the north shore. (The ferry sched-ule is posted at the town dock or is available by call-ing 410-885-5088.) Chesapeake Inn & Marina offers a launch service for patrons in anchored boats. To arrange for a pick up, hail them on VHF channel 16 or call the inn at 410-885-2040.
