Petra (P) is dismissed by Mr Busk (B) - This happens offstage before Petra’s entrance in Act 5. IMMEDIATE CIRCUMSTANCES: Friday 17th April 8:40am - middle of assembly, Children in background singing Norwegian hymn BEGINNING: Mr Busk approaches Petra surreptitiously. MIDDLE: Mr Busk must confront Petra. END: Petra exits. B: If you could come with me P: I need to register children B: We have a supply teacher to do that. In Mr Busk’s office.... B: We have loved you teaching here – breath of fresh air. Very glad to have you
as one of our staff, school has been backward looking. I am duty bound to address some complaints. Some children have suggested you have said there are anomalies in the Noah story.
P: Some of the children were confused. I did try to address it and I quoted Kierkegaard. B: I am not sure the children need to know about Kierkegaard. P: He is interested in faith and that having a faith puts you in a position of doubt. B: One of the parents said that you had said the story was arrant nonsense, its
just a story, its just a fable. P: I think I said I know it doesn’t make sense. B: You also said that the Vikings are misunderstood. P: We take part in war ourselves. B: We have to bear in mind this is a faith school. The Vikings worshipped gods
of war and thunder. We try to teach there is one god. I understand your little brother has been running around for 2 weeks now as a Viking. And your father is encouraging it. We cannot have children running around making obscenities in Norse.
P laughs B: You should not been teaching in trousers. P: You have been really kind to me, what is the result of these complaints. B: I have really enjoyed having you teach here. P: Good, I think the children have progressed. B: But the community might not be ready for... I am left with no other choice. P: Some of the parents are bigoted. B: Some of the influence you bring is malign and that comes from your father. P: Is this about the complaints or this because of the incident last night? B: This is about 3 complaints have been on my desk for 3 weeks but I now have
no other choice. Petra walks out.
