EDITOR’S FOREWORD
In February BAC was awarded the 2017 PMR Diamond Arrow Award as recognition for outstanding customer service and brand awareness. On Valentine’s day, the BAC team was treated with lots of love, chocolates and messages on “Humility” courtesy of the brand ambassadors as they launched their activities for the year.
Economic experts and analysts have named Rwanda one of Africa’s fastest growing markets. Kigali, a cosmopolitan city full of life, abound with opportunities and ripe for business is an amazing place to be. From the friendly and passionate taxi drivers, the clean streets and professionally run local markets, one really understands why it is an attraction for business men and women of the world. For me, it remains the cleanest city in Africa.
Attending a resource mobilization workshop in this beautiful country was befitting as the country specializes in optimisation and promotion of local produce to grow the economy. Native entrepreneurs are business savvy and take pride in selling their intricately made cultural artifacts.
We won the Best 2018 BHRDS Overall Stand and the Best Public College for the third time consecutively demonstrating the team’s creativity, passion and resolute commitment to be the leading business school of choice.
Forty-one LEA-BAC Student Consultants were acknowledged by the Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research Science and Technology Honourable Fidelis Molao as the future business leaders of Botswana during the award ceremony jointly hosted by the BAC Executive Director Ms Serty Leburu and the LEA Chief Executive Officer Dr Racious Moatshe.
The month of March marks the last days in office of His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama after two terms as the Botswana head of state. As he bids the nation farewell, we acknowledge his great contribution to development programs and upholding the country’s legacy to demonstrate the tenets of democracy for which we are renown in Africa and the world. The President confidently introduced His Honour The Vice President Mr Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi as his successor and requested the nation to support him when he assumes office on 1st April 2018.
We are indeed privileged to witness the change of leadership in government and proud that the country continues to be the epitome of democracy to the world. I wish the incoming 5th President of the Republic of Botswana Mr Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi and the First Lady to be Mrs Neo Masisi God’s grace and wisdom as he takes the button to move the country forward.
In this issue, we get to have a feel of what inspires Dr Male and his fellow technocrats in the School of Computing and Information Systems. I trust that everyone who celebrated their birthday during this quarter had a special and great time. In addition to birthday wishes, we introduced an extra special page on announcement of new born babies, to celebrate with BAC employees the new additions to their families.

A NEW DAWN BEGAN ON JANUARY 1ST AS WE WELCOME 2018 WITH LOTS OF FUNFAIR, NEW HOPES, DREAMS AND RENEWED ENTHUSIASM.
Academically, it is the beginning of the second semester of the year for all levels. An even nail biting period for the final year students as they prepare for their final exams as BAC students in the next few months. It is also a time during which students get to nominate their new leadership, the Student Representative Council for a new term in office.
Congratulations to the Gaborone SRC President Mr Tshepiso Masilonyane and his team as well as the Francistown SRC Cabinet led by Mr Donovan Chabe. I wish them success in their leadership. To the outgoing Presidents, Ms Goitsemang Maikano, Mr Olefile Kgosana and their teams, good luck with your exams and future endeavors, I trust that your experience in BAC has contributed to your professional growth.
It is a time during which we anticipate with eagerness results for the senior secondary school class of 2017 exams. Congratulatory messages on standby, we also gear up for recruitment of the 2018 intake which starts with an integrated marketing campaign including adverts across various media, a national roadshow, the Botswana Human Resource Development Career and Skills Fair in Francistown and Gaborone preceded by the Francistown Open day.

2018 NATIONAL ROADSHOW
The Marketing & Corporate Communications Department in collaboration with the Registrar’s office and the academic teams embarked on a rigorous integrated marketing communications campaign to call for undergraduate applications. The campaign focused on different media to create awareness and attract prospective students. This plan saw the teams do radio interviews, television interviews, and a nationwide roadshow.
The roadshows started on Monday 26th February 2018 and ended on Saturday 24th March 2018 during which teams visited most of the Senior Secondary Schools across the country to raise awareness of our programmes and administer applications to prospective students. The roadshow was a successful endeavour as applications were administered and in some instance spot admissions delivered.
In addition to the Secondary Schools, the teams also used the opportunity to meet the Sub District Council Offices to establish long-term relationships with the Offices. This was a successful initiative as prospective students in remote areas were given the opportunity to apply for tertiary institution.

BAC Executive Director Ms Serty Leburu together with the Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications Mrs Mpho Mokgosi and The Postgraduate Coordinator Mr Boikie Tema attended the Association of African Universities Conference which was held in Kigali, Rwanda from the 13th to 16th March 2018.
The theme of the conference was “Resource Mobilisation in Higher Education”. There is a need to develop higher education in Africa by Institutions of Higher Education. However, this is a costly endeavour hence the need for Higher Education Institutions to develop strategies to raise the needed funding. Both private and public institutions of higher education across the African continent are faced with resource constraints to effectively undertake their core duties of Teaching and Learning, Research as well as Community Engagement activities. The new paradigm shift has to move away from over reliance on government funding in order to self-sustain.
Topics covered during the conference included resource mobilization, networking as a tool for resource mobilization; Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations; and consultancy services amongst others.

2017 BAC - LEA GRADUATE CONSULTANCY AWARDS
Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) and the Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2014. The partnership falls with BAC’s wider community engagement strategy, and signifies the institution’s recognition to forge strong ties with industry, in order to expose students to industry experience and enhance their employability. The partnership is meant to nurture the students’ entrepreneurial interests while they employ the theory obtained in class on LEA incubated projects. This therefore gives the students the consultancy expertise and practical experience. With entrepreneurship and enterprise development as one of the key priorities of the LEA mandate, this relationship has proven to bear fruits for both partners as BAC is also channelling its efforts towards shaping entrepreneurial and innovative skills, employability and market readiness of its students. The student consultants are assigned to LEA SMEs to carry out business analysis, develop, recommend and implement solutions.
On Wednesday 28th March 2018, BAC in partnership with LEA, hosted an award ceremony for the third cohort of 41 student consultants who have completed their projects with 10 selected SMEs in 2017. This year, the students worked with; O’s House of Design, Atlas Chickens, Ledingwana Property Investment, SIFIWA, Gardener’s Paradise, Masedi Medical Clinic, En Masse Butchery and Sounds Investments.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Since the beginning of time, leadership has played a pivotal part in shaping communities. Ageing back to the times of the great King Pharaoh and Shaka Zulu, to name a few of the many leaders who led their nations into prosperity and laid a solid foundation for them to develop as a whole; leaders have, and still constitute an important part in the development and growth of our societies.
The BAC student leadership comprises of the President, Vice president, Secretary General and the Administrative Secretary who make up the Executive Council. It also consists of Ministers including the Minister of: Information and Publicity, Entertainment, Gender and Student Welfare, Finance, Academics, Hostels and Sports as well as 2 additional members. The Ministries have been set-up to help tackle swathes of issues that affect the student body and to serve as an intermediary between the students and the administration.
The SRC which was voted into power on the 6th March 2018 is however unique compared to its predecessors. It strikes an almost perfect balance between the sexes as it comprises of 6 females and 7 males who make up the cabinet; a step towards achieving Gender Equality in our societies, something that we all have been striving towards for many years. The SRC also comprises of members from different faculties, majoring in different courses at different levels, this giving everyone a chance to actively take part in the running of the operations of the Council, something that the SRC prides itself in. The ambition and passion of the SRC to represent and serve the students is certainly something to write home about. Guided by 3 main principles which are accountability, transparency and synergy the cabinet aims to improve the lives of
the Botswana Accountancy College student body by submitting to their demands and help cater for their needs.
To the next guy, this might be just an ordinary SRC. One where representatives are voted into power then later forget why they were voted for, what they promised to deliver. This is the misconception that has plagued the minds of our colleagues/school mates. That the SRC is in it for any other reason besides what they should be in office for. This is understandable because we do live in an era where people who claim to be “representatives of the people” are only in it for themselves and nobody else. This however has proven to be otherwise within our cabinet as we have leaders who oversee every decision taken and make sure that everything happens accordingly and that every member follows through with every decision affecting their respective portfolios.
By the end of its 1 year term in office, the SRC hopes to have accomplished a bucket load of accomplishments to leave a reputable legacy behind and lay the foundation for those who will follow. Human Rights Activist, Mahatma Gandhi, once said “Be the change you want to see in the world”, a teaching that the BAC SRC has subscribed to as it strongly believes in leading by example. With less than a year left until the SRC leaves office, it surely is working tirelessly towards achieving what they promised to deliver to students. However, at the end of the day, the SRC members are also students hence must juggle school load and SRC Duties, something which is very tedious. The SRC therefore pleads with the students to bear with them if it may seem as if they act as snails ‘pace to attend to their problems and assures the student body that they will not neglect their duties at any point. The SRC also hopes to work well with the student body throughout their term in office to tackle issues facing the student body.
