On the cover:SomeofourStarshipTeamcelebratingStarshipHospital’s25thbirthday.

To the kind people of Auckland Hospital: I was admitted to Auckland Hospital with severe abdomen pain. As a stranger in a foreign land I was not sure of what support and help I would receive. I was worried about what would happen to me since my family was not around to fortify and comfort me. They say, kindness is more than words – it is an attitude, an expression, an act that lifts another person. The kind nurses, doctors and other workers gave me hope and helped me heal. I have nothing but gratitude for the kindness extended to me from being admitted until the day I left.Grateful patient

I would like to ‘post’ some very positive feedback on my recent experience in Totara Ward at the Greenlane Clinical Centre. I turned up for scheduled minor surgery and from the moment I arrived at Reception K, 2nd floor, until I was discharged the next morning, I was treated with the utmost care, respect and professionalism. My ‘room mate’ and I agreed that the Totara Ward experience seemed more like a private hospital than public.A happy patient

I would like to extend my appreciation to two staff members who tended to my mother recently. She went to ER for swelling and pain in the head area. The nurse on duty was Claire Raikuna. Her personality and willingness to assist in any way to make my mum comfortable was amazing. She listened carefully and was able to assure my emotional mum that she was going to be seen and thanked us for waiting patiently. The doctor Barkley Foley who cared for mother explained everything clearly and gave us the time to think about decisions that were significant to her treatment. Mum was hesitant but the doctor was calming and able to encourage her to do the scan, which we the family needed to see. Thank you very much for providing excellent service.Thankful daughter

Celebrating excellence in health

2016AwardsIt was a night of glitz and glamour at the Auckland DHB Health Excellence

Awards on December 1, where outstanding healthcare and research initiatives were celebrated at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The annual awards recognise teams and individuals whose dedication and creative thinking enable us to do our jobs more effectively, and to provide better care and support for our patients, whānau, and community. This year we received a record 42 entries across all categories.Chief Executive Ailsa Claire says: “Excellence comes in many forms. The work that has been recognised at the Health Excellence Awards isn’t just about the big budget projects. Small changes have a significant impact, and are often more complex than they appear.”“As a large health system it’s easy to forget that we’re all part of one very big team. These awards are a good reminder of how we all connect.”“The Health Excellence Awards are also a great opportunity to develop ways of working smarter, improve our systems and processes, and share these learnings across the organisation.”Attendees at the evening were inspired by guest speaker, Cam Calkoen. Cam was born with Cerebral Palsy Cam was told that his biggest challenges would be the way he walks and talks. During the evening Cam entertained by sharing his pursuit of excellence and his journey to make life as awesome as it can be.Congratulations to this year’s winners, and to all our finalists, and thank you to everyone who took the time to put forward an application. There were some amazing projects entered for this year’s Awards. You can view videos of our finalists and read about all the applicants on the Auckland DHB website – search ‘Health Excellence Awards’, or look under the ‘Health Professionals’ tab.
