The PURSUIT OF exCeLLenCe InSIde LORd BALFOUR

Lord Balfour never settles: it goes for more. In consistence with our permanent evolution, and always having the best interests of our guests at heart, we wanted to take a step forward to raise our quality standards and optimize our clients’ experience during their stay.

Page 7: Inside Lord Balfour

05INSIDE LORD BALFOUR

The PURSUIT OF exCeLLenCe lord balfour has designed an ambitious extension plan that is already underway. what is it about? the hotel will incorporate 17 new rooms, a swimming pool with a terrace, a spa, a solarium, 2 conference rooms and a parking lot.

the project will be developed on an adjacent site so the functioning of the hotel won’t be disturbed. the construction is due to start in september and our aim is to open the new wing in the high season of 2015.

but that’s not all. what’s really striking about the project are the details. 17 premium rooms of about 350 square feet will be built in line with the hotel’s modern and stunning style and design. one of them will be a luxury suite, which doubles the rest in size and includes a private terrace with a jacuzzi.

the new pool will leave you speechless: it combines style, glamour and beauty to make the most of your stay at lord balfour. right next to it, you will find a spacious solarium, a spa, a jacuzzi and everything you need to have an unforgettable time.

we hope you come back to discover and enjoy what the new lord balfour has to offer, because you are our main inspiration to keep growing.

The project will be developed on an adjacent site so the functioning of the hotel won’t be disturbed!

Q&A WITh edWIn PAZ, OUR BARTendeR kInG

Edwin Paz, our bartender at Lord Balfour, has rightfully become king of one of our guests’ favorite spots. For this reason, we interviewed him to know what it takes to be the man behind our hotel bar.

How did you become a bartender?i attended bartending school, started with realistic training from bartenders with vast experience. i began with private gatherings and moved up to very high volume events such as ultra Music festivals, socavivor, calle 8, bayside yacht charters, sunlife stadium and the Miami heat arena.

Page 10: Inside Lord Balfour

INSIDE LORD BALFOUR08

Which is the most requested cocktail at the Lord Balfour?among the lord balfour specialty drinks it would be the tower of london. in Miami beach i would say it’s always a classic: cuban Mojito.

Which are your two favorite cocktails?among the lord balfour specialties, my two favorite cocktails are, definitely, the tea time and buckingham palace. i really recommend you to try them.

Would you share the recipes with us?of course! Just like a chef in the kitchen, a great creation is to be shared with those who appreciate and enjoy the experience of your creativity.

A bartender must be open and receptive to customers.

What do you like most about your job?it’s a trade first and an investment of time to grow your own mixologist skills. the aim is to display a studied expertise in cocktail-making and serve the customers beyond their expectations. i also love the opportunity to be part of a new and exciting location at the lord balfour, for which i have confidence it will grow to its highest potential.

Any funny anecdote that you recall?being filmed for the Miami ultimate bartender competition by the beach channel as a reality show and not expecting it.

What is the secret to make a good drink?a bartender must be open and receptive to customers. the secret is to make the best effort to match their preferences with your creations to deliver a unique drink.

Fashion, luxury, art, decoration and, above all, the new and noteworthy, reunited in one place. The Art District in Miami is an emerging area growing at a vigorous pace, which attracts more and more people for the array of activities it offers. It is a must in Miami for those who are keen on new experiences, a warm atmosphere and the latest in design.

located in Midtown, the design district has become “the” new hot spot in Miami. however, this hasn’t been always the case. before being considered trendy this area, originally named “buena vista”, was out of the map.

craig robins, an investor specialized in arts and design, twisted the fate of the design district when he pictured this flooded scenario, located south of “little haiti”, as the perfect spot to make a neighborhood where art, design, decoration and fashion could be in the spotlight.

the visionary businessman invited his friends in the industry to move their firms to the north of 36 street. the first to sign up to the project was the luxury shoe company christian louboutin and shortly afterwards the designer yohji yamamoto. nowadays, louis vuitton, cartier, fendi, Maison Martin Margiela and kenzo are among the top designer boutiques that fill the area with glamour and distinction. Many of these brands even closed their stores in the luxurious shopping mall bal harbour to settle down here.

craig robins’ strategy to position the design district as the main competitor to the most popular areas of the city, such as lincoln road and bal harbour, is evident and successful, mainly within the young and stylish.

today, the design district hosts the gallery nights that take place the second saturday of every month. the tour includes a night visit through the 130 art galleries and showrooms that remain open until 10:00 pm, offering live music and tasty drinks.

this is what the design district is about: a blend of fashion, design, new trends and art condensed in just a few blocks.

a world-class boutique rests beside a modern art gallery; a Mediterranean-style restaurant sits a couple of steps away from a store with the latest in decoration. what more could we ask for?

A new luxury shopping destinAtionvalentino, fendi, tom ford, dolce & gabbana, harry winston, givenchy, giorgio armani and van cleef & arpels… all these ultra-luxury fashion and jewelry companies—and many more— are opening their gilded doors in Miami’s redeveloped design district, joining other top designers like louis vuitton, hermès, berluti, emilio pucci, prada, céline and cartier, which have already set up their stores.

construction is underway, as the transformation of the once-gritty Miami neighborhood into a glamorous international luxury shopping destination takes shape. some buildings are already unrecognizable; security has been stepped up, greenery enhanced.

it’s a massive undertaking inside Miami’s urban core: in two years, nearly 120 top retailers will have settled in the district.

by next fall, 50 new stores will be opened, along with seven restaurants, adding to the 15 shops already in operation. about 50 more will be inaugurated in 2015.

are we facing the new soho? the design district’s boutiques and restaurants promise to bring new life to an urban neighborhood, and seal its name on the affluent market’s map.

It was no big surprise when Matthew McConaughey scooped this year's best actor Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club as a real-life rodeo cowboy who smuggled HIV drugs into the US.

The 44-year-old had been the hot favourite for weeks to pick up the prestigious Academy Award. Just five or six years ago, though, no one would have predicted how his career has come full circle.

born in the small city of uvalde, texas, Mcconaughey eschewed a role in the family oil pipe business to study radio, tv and film at the university of texas.

while many still know him best for his leading roles in such rom-coms as Failure to Launch and The Wedding Planner, he actually began his career in richard linklater's indie cult classic, Dazed and Confused.

the 1993 film, set in a high school in the 1970s, saw him utter his now-famous line "alright, alright, alright" for the first time in his role as drifter david wooderson.

this led to small roles in films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation and road trip comedy drama Boys on the Side. but then he got his big break, playing a lawyer in the 1996 film adaptation of John grisham novel A Time to Kill.

the role landed him on the cover of vanity fair. the same year he also won plaudits for his role in Lone Star, a texas-set western directed by John sayles.

with a lead role in steven spielberg's slave drama Amistad the following year, it seemed unlikely that Mcconaughey would soon be going down the route of semi-naked poster boy.

but with lukewarm receptions for linklater's The Newton Boys (1998) and ron howard's EdTV (1999), in which Mcconaughey had leading roles, it was time to change course.

The Wedding Planner (2001), co-starring Jennifer lopez, was followed by How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) with kate hudson and Failure to Launch (2006), opposite sarah Jessica parker.

"I didn't ever go, 'No, no, no.' I was like, 'Yeah! I get that. That 's fun. What 's the big deal?' If you go deep with the rom-com you sink the ship."

Page 19: Inside Lord Balfour

17

2008's Fool's Gold saw him reunite with hudson, while 2009's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past cast him alongside Jennifer garner.

the rom-coms were interspersed with more dramatic fare: Sahara, opposite penelope cruz, and Two for the Money with al pacino, both released in 2005. yet Mcconaughey seemed to accept where his bread and butter would be made.

in a recent interview in the daily telegraph, Mcconaughey said he had no qualms about being associated with the romantic comedy genre.

"i didn't ever go, 'no, no, no.' i was like, 'yeah! i get that. that's fun. what's the big deal?' if you go deep with the rom-com you sink the ship."

"there's a buoyancy to the frequency of rom-coms. to be light is critically always looked down upon - it's willowy, it's wispy, it's nothing. you know what? it's not easy to do and a lot of people don't do it well."

having made his fortune at the box office, though, he made the crucial decision to be more choosy.

three years ago, Mcconaughey signalled a change in direction with The Lincoln Lawyer, a critically acclaimed crime thriller that was swiftly followed by Bernie, another collaboration with linklater.

his lead role in 2011's Killer Joe, from The Exorcist director william friedkin, won him plenty of praise, as did his roles in The Paperboy and Mud the following year.

this burgeoning, more heavyweight career, was coined the "Mcconnaissance", a phrase the actor described as "fun" in a 2012 interview.

a stripper role in steven soderbergh's 2012 comedy Magic Mike proved Mcconaughey was confident enough to still take more light-hearted roles - one which won him a best supporting actor award at last year's independent spirit awards.

"Same one but a different chapter of my book."

in a bbc interview in 2012, the actor was asked if he had become a different Matthew Mcconaughey these days. the actor replied: "same one but a different chapter of my book."

it certainly seems like a lifetime ago since Mcconaughey was charged with resisting arrest after an early morning disturbance at his home in texas in 1999. a police officer allegedly spotted the star through a window, dancing naked and playing bongo drums.

he was subsequently fined for disturbing the peace. in an interview with gQ magazine last year, however, he said: "of course i still play the congas naked. i just close the windows."

Magic Mike was followed by Dallas Buyers Club, not to mention a critically acclaimed cameo role opposite leonardo dicaprio in Martin scorsese's oscar-nominated The Wolf of Wall Street.

currently to be seen alongside his frequent collaborator woody harrelson in hbo drama series True Detective, Mcconaughey will be found later this year in christopher nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar.

such projects show Mcconaughey is staying true to his motto "just keep livin'", also the name of his non-profit foundation, which provides fitness and health programmes in us schools.

perhaps the last word should go to Mcconaughey's Dallas Buyers Club co-star, Jared leto. following his win at the spirit awards, he joked that he was going to "pull a reverse" from Mcconaughey and only do romantic comedies in the future.

if his co-star's success is anything to go by, it might not do him any harm.

Benefitswhile dr. agatston designed the diet for the benefit of his patients, he claims that everyone could take advantage of his eating plan. the diet focuses on lean proteins, low-fat or fat-free dairy, vegetables and legumes. he suggests not eating starchy or processed foods. dr. agatston declares that his diet can lower blood sugar levels and ldl cholesterol. it can also control cravings caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels.

Phase One gets you started on your journey. you do not eat bread, oatmeal, or pasta during this period. fruit and alcohol are also forbidden. this phase lasts two weeks. without the refined sugars and starches, many people report losing weight and eliminating cravings.

Phase Two introduces healthy carbohydrates back into your diet. you will be able to eat multi-grain breads, bran muffins, chocolate and fruit. this phase continues until you lose the desired amount of weight.

agatston believes that Phase Three is a lifelong plan. it allows you maximum flexibility. phase three dieters can eat almost any food. if you find that you are sliding back into old habits, the doctor suggests revisiting phase one again for two weeks. he believes that the flexibility of these three phases will help dieters stay on his plan.

tAke Action, mAke A difference! the lord balfour means to be much more than just a company dedicated to accommodate people. we want to make a difference by rising up our eyes from the business and looking at our neighbors. what we see is many people who need help, living right next door.

since hosting is our business, we feel urged to help those who have nowhere to sleep. this is the reason why lord balfour created a partnership with the Miami coalition for the homeless to build a better city by helping those who live in it.

ABout the miAmi coAlition for the homelessthe Miami coalition for the homeless (Mch) is an organization whose mission is promoting community collaboration to prevent and end homelessness in south florida. their goal is to effectively advocate for the rights of the homeless, and collaboratively engage community organizations to work together to find an answer to this

problem. they achieve this through a variety of programs and initiatives, including awarding grants and emergency assistance funding.

nowadays, Mch is embarking on a new and timely project focused on youth. young people experience homelessness in very subversive ways, such as couch-surfing to remain off the street, making identifying and assisting them extremely difficult. Mch and participating organizations are targeting these youth through various strategies to find them long-term housing and educational resources.

“while these partnerships with other organizations are vital, partnerships with corporations such as the lord balfour hotel are fundamental to our work. we applaud lord balfour for its dedication and support of the Miami coalition and the work we do. with their backing and your donation, we can work together to end homelessness in south florida once and for all”, declared bobbie ibarra, executive director of the Mch.
