DOWNE HOUSE

SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2015in ThE PAC 10.00am - 1.30pm

Not long after finishing my A Levels in 2010, I joined Downe House as the Resources Assistant and worked in that department for 4 years.

Working in Resources allowed me to get to know many of the staff and girls and learn a lot about the School.

In 2014 I moved across to join the Marketing team in the Foundation Office in the role of Marketing and Communications Assistant. I thoroughly enjoy my role and have learnt a great deal!

I enjoy tackling new challenges and taking on my own projects. I also get to use my creative skills, as I quite often will be around the School site taking photographs and I help to put together the School’s advertisements and news articles. It is great to work with staff and girls across the many departments and year groups on publications and design work.

farewell to the claSS of 2015

On July 1 we celebrated the end of an era for the Upper Sixth. The day commenced with a Prize Giving ceremony in the Farr Centre. Our special guest for the assembly was DH Alumnae Mrs Gillian Sheldon (DH 1985).

A Leavers’ Service followed in Chapel and then a delicious lunch was enjoyed by all in the marquee.

Although it was a sweltering summer’s day, we enjoyed saying farewell to this super year group of girls. We wish them all the best for Results Day in August and we look forward to tracking their lives beyond Downe.

Here’s to the Ten Year Reunion in 2025!

The sound of Old Seniors and former staff reminiscing echoed through the Tamar Valley on Thursday 11 June at Hotel Endsleigh, Milton Abbot, Devon.

The Foundation Office West Country Gathering attracted 26 members of the Downe House community living in the region. Designed for the 6th Duke of Bedford and now a hotel owned by Olga Polizzi, the hotel is set in 108 acres of gardens, woodlands, follies and grottos created by Humphry Repton.

Everyone immensely enjoyed a tour of the magnificent gardens by Head Gardener, Ben Ruscombe-King. It was only the second time that Ben had conducted a tour of the gardens in his role as Head Gardener. He gave a very informative talk on the history of the house and grounds, and gratefully received advice from the keen gardeners in the group!

This was followed by a sumptuous full afternoon tea on the beautiful parterre. It was wonderful to see and hear everyone chatting about their time at Downe House. A School photograph brought along by one member of the group instigated much discussion. It never fails to surprise me that both alumnae and former staff have so many memories to share from their time at the School.

Having grown up in North Cornwall it was wonderful to be able to bring a little of the Downe House magic to this part of the world, and in such beautiful surroundings. Thank you to all of you who attended for making it such an enjoyable afternoon.

Bny mellon career inSight day

On Wednesday 13 May we were lucky enough to be invited to the offices of BNY Mellon in central London for a unique career insight day. With a jam packed agenda which had been tailor made for Downe House, it was clear from the outset that it was going to be a beneficial experience for all. We fought through rush hour traffic to be welcomed at the first floor boardroom with views of the London Eye by Mr Michael Cole-Fontayn (Executive Vice President & Chairman EMEA) who very kindly gave the eight Lower Sixth girls a fantastic understanding of what a career in finance might involve. During the course of the day we were fortunate to hear from the Head of Talent Acquisition and the Head of Recruitment EMEA, both of whom provided the girls with a wonderful CV writing toolkit and tips on making the most out of your degree. The day concluded with an opportunity to play ‘fundopoly’, a great interactive game where you learn all about the world of finance and investment banking in a fun and informative way. Before leaving we had an opportunity to view the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race trophy which BNY Mellon currently sponsors. Our sincere thanks to BNY Mellon.

We are proud to announce that Downe House Sixth Form student, June Eric-Udorie, is through to the finals of Red’s ‘Smart Woman of the Year’ competition.

“The Red Women of the Year Awards, are all about empowering women. No matter how they’ve shaped their career, the awards shine a light on the most deserving and inspirational working women in Britain. The Smart Woman category celebrates an inspiring icon who stands out from any of the other Red Women of the Year award categories. Whether it’s art, politics, fashion, business, charity or more, the award recognises a trailblazer making a difference in the world.”

Red Magazine OnlineAt just 16, June has wowed audiences everywhere from her classroom to the Southbank Centre and the United Nations as an anti FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) activist, and campaigner for women’s rights, speaking up and fighting for issues such as the end to FGM, No More Page 3 and compulsory sex and relationships education in schools.

Her experience is impressive. She is a member of Plan UK’s Youth Advisory Panel, sits on their Board of Trustees and writes about these issues regularly on her blog June-writes.com, Twitter @juneericudorie and for publications like the Telegraph and the New Statesman.

In April, June successfully launched a petition against Sussex Police when they produced distasteful anti-rape posters - they were taken down within 72 hours and she received an official apology.

This is a remarkable achievement for a 17 year old and we are very proud to be celebrating June’s nomination.

We wish Vanessa Westacott (Former Staff & Hon Old Senior) every success with her exciting new venture in the Charente Maritime, France.www.papillonecoledelangue.com

dr harriet atkinSonHarriet Atkinson (DH 1990) is a design historian and author of ‘The Festival of Britain: A Land and its People’ which was published by I.B. Tauris in 2012.

Harriet has been lecturing at the University of Brighton since September 2013. Prior to that, she was Faculty Fellow based in the University of Brighton Design Archives. Harriet studied English Literature at University of York, History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, London and studied for a PhD at the Royal College of Art/ Victoria & Albert Museum’s joint history of design department. She has written for various journals of art and design, as well as for The Guardian and The Independent.

Harriet is currently working on new projects including a major new 3 volume design encyclopaedia which will be published by Bloomsbury later this year!

‘The Festival of Britain in 1951 transformed the way people saw their war-ravaged nation. Giving Britons an intimate experience of contemporary design and modern building, it helped them accept a landscape under reconstruction, and brought hope of a better world to come. Drawing on previously unseen sketches and plans, photographs and interviews, The Festival of Britain: A Land

and Its People travels beyond the Festival’s spectacular centrepiece at London’s South Bank, to show how the Festival made the whole country an exhibition ground with events to which hundreds of the country’s greatest architects, artists and designers contributed.’

The Silent Hours is her first novel.

‘A gripping mystery, with an epic sweep, The Silent Hours is a wonderfully assured debut.’

What a fantastic evening it was!

Sir Tim so generously gave up his time to deliver two talks as part of our Medley Evening Series.

He began the evening by speaking with our Lower School girls, parents, staff and visiting Prep School children and staff in the Performing Arts Centre. Thank you to Lambrook, Eagle House, Cothill and Marlston and Brockhurst Schools for joining us.

After an engaging and entertaining hour, Sir Tim then moved to the Farr Centre where an audience of more than 400 Upper and Sixth Form girls, staff, parents, guests and alumnae enjoyed an equally captivating talk.

Inspirational, educational and fascinating. It was a privilege to hear him speak.

Our sincere thanks to Sir Tim.

Our special guest for the Summer Term Medley Lecture was Sir Tim Rice, one of the most versatile and prolific lyricists writing today.

Sir Tim has written for the musical stage and Disney animated films, and is best known for his theatrical collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sir Tim and Lord Lloyd Webber enjoyed unrivalled success in the 1960s and 70s with ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Evita’. Other significant collaborations include his work with ABBA duo Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson on the musical ‘Chess’ and with Sir Elton John on the stage version of the Disney hit ‘The Lion King’.

myself. Even though ex-pat life can sometimes be quite difficult (especially in a third world country, and with very little money), but for me, it’s about the job. I love what I do, the people I work with and ultimately all the children I am helping. I would advise everyone to spend time in their life living abroad!

Reality Gives hits the jackpot at ‘A Night at the Casino’Annabelle has maintained a close relationship with the School since leaving in 2008. She has visited and talked to the girls as part of our enrichment programme, and was a valuable contributor to the Downe House Horizons brochure. This relationship was the catalyst for the Aisholt girls forging strong links with the charity Reality Gives and on a cold February night they transformed the Main Dining Room into a glamorous casino for families and staff to enjoy in aid of the charity. The highly successful and enjoyable “Night at the Casino” raised over £7,000, which the charity will spend on educating and transforming the lives of young people in what is one of the biggest slums in India.

This fantastic reciprocal relationship between our alumnae and the current cohort serves well to illustrate the strength and value of being part of the Downe House community.

“This is truly stunning! We’ll work hard to ensure this has the maximum possible

impact here in Dharavi. It’s certainly going to make a huge difference to a lot

of young lives!” Annabelle Clarke, Quality Improvement Director, Reality Gives

To find out more the work of Reality Gives visit www.realitygives.org

Where in the world are you now?I am living in Mumbai, and working for Reality Gives, a charity that strives toward a world where underprivileged communities have equal access to opportunities and resources. We provide young people from underprivileged communities in India with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential.

Current occupation/activity:Director of Quality Improvement at a Primary School in Dharavi, India, which is one of the biggest slums in India.

When you were 16, what were your main ambitions for the future? When I was 16, I would have never believed I would end up being a teacher or working within education (I am sure some teachers can vouch for that too), I’m not sure I could see beyond A levels!

A level subjects studied:I studied Philosophy, French and Drama.

Did you take a gap year? If so, what did you do?Yes, I travelled with some other Downe House girls around South America and South East Asia. We volunteered in an orphanage in Rio de Janiero - apart from that there was a lot of sunbathing and sightseeing.

Undergraduate degree and/or other qualifications, and where gained:I studied Philosophy at Leeds and got a 2:1, and then I did my PGCE through School Direct (training whilst teaching), and qualified as an ‘Outstanding’ teacher.

Career path since graduating (if applicable):I trained as a teacher and taught within the ARK network, and then I moved to India September 2014.

Future plans:I plan on staying out here for (at least) the next Indian academic year, in order to implement all the changes that I want to make in the school and the new curriculum that I am currently writing. After India, I will go back to England and most likely continue to teach and manage within the ARK network. I would love to run an English primary school in a disadvantaged area one day. Who knows where life will lead me though, I never imagined a year ago I would be out here, but I am and I’m loving it.

Finally, please give us your words of advice about living abroad:It’s a big and daunting experience to move abroad, however there will never be a ‘right time’ to do it. It has hands down been the best experience I have had in my life so far, I have learnt a lot about the world, but also about

alumnae around the world

annaBelle clarke in

This is the second in our series of features about our alumnae around the world, from taken from the Downe House Horizons brochure. Annabelle Clarke (DH 2008) is Director of Quality Improvement at a Primary School in Dharavi, India, where she continues her work on curriculum development with the charity Reality Gives. Annabelle’s continued links with the School, and her valuable contribution to our enrichment programme, has led to the girls from Aisholt House raising over £7000 to support the important work Reality Gives carries out to improve children’s education in the slums of India.

YEAR OF 199025 YEAR REUniOn TUESDAY 6 OCTOBER 2015 6.30pm - 9.30pm 20 Cavendish Square, London

julie doyleA free spirit, blessed with expansive, robust and discerning views, Julie Doyle leaves us after 14 years to take on a new challenge in the Channel Islands. Julie will no doubt exercise the same level of dexterity, tenacity and sheer fun in the midst of her new role at the Ladies’ College in Guernsey as she has in the English Department at Downe. Julie’s gutsy approach to the teaching of English language and literature was one of her most admirable features. Never one for taking the path most trodden, staff and pupils alike would look on, agog, at the seemingly boundless energy with which she would approach the analysis of literature, be it the inspired teaching of Virginia Woolf or Seamus Heaney, the more considered evaulations of the work of Philip Larkin or the introduction of a new Reading Scheme for the Lower School. Who can forget the Sixth Form trip to Salisbury Cathedral when Julie, map and guidebook in hand, gave pupils (and the general public) a critical analysis of the subtext in William Golding’s ‘The Spire’?

Julie was the Head of English during a period of significant curriculum change at Downe. She took the characteristically brave decision to move us towards the IGCSE in order to introduce even greater rigour in the classroom. It was a joy to work with her during this period as she often posed challenging questions that informed our decision making. Outspoken, but always supportive, Julie was always a champion of the values that lie at the heart of our community.

Julie is a great lover of the English countryside and a champion of the socially dispossessed. In many respects these principles have always gone hand in hand with her literary interests. I am sure that she will explore every nook and cranny on Guernsey and that she will soon find herself involved in taking a firm stance on a local issue! We wish her well for the future.

Mr Mark Hill (Academic Deputy)

vaneSSa weStacottIt seems incredible to think that Vanessa has been here for more than a quarter of a century. The energy and passion that she puts into teaching her beloved French belies this fact. We are very lucky that Vanessa chose to settle for so long with us here at Downe House because we have all benefitted from her classroom experience, her pursuit of excellence and her support of colleagues both in the department and in the staff room. Vanessa loves French; she loves the language, the literature and the culture. She has always wanted to share this love with her pupils and has known exactly how to achieve this. She has been true to every language teacher’s desire to use the target language as much as possible and Vanessa was successful in adapting the language to fit the ability of the class. Looking through 28 years’ worth of lesson observations it is hard to find one that has not mentioned Vanessa’s use of target language. Vanessa also gave of her time to be a tutor in AGS and naturally whilst in House she spoke to as many girls as possible in French!

Vanessa has shown herself to be incredibly determined. She is encouraging and patient with both pupils and colleagues alike and is an excellent role model for us all. She sets herself high standards and has always expected the same from her pupils; if work is worth doing, then it is worth doing well and if it is not done well - then do it again! This focus on detail and her unwavering support of her pupils has meant that they have done well and have often exceeded their own expectations.

Vanessa leaves us for her beloved France, were she has set up Papillon Ecole de Langue, a residential language school and beautiful holiday destination in the sunny Charente Maritime. I am certain that she will flourish in this new opportunity, especially as she is at the helm! We will miss Vanessa but we wish her and her husband all the very best.
