BPI wins Canadian import banTHE BPI scored a major victory againstparallel importers in the High Court onThursday when Chrysalis won an actionagainst Simons Records to prevent thembringing in Canadian records throughHolland.

Deputy Judge Vivien Price QCrejected the assertion by Simons Re-cords, Simons Sales, Warrens Records, and Warren Goldberg that their actionwas allowed under EEC law.

He gave the BPI, acting on behalf ofChrysalis, BBC and CBS Records an

injunction preventing the four com-panies from importing Canadian copiesof Eat To The Beat, Parallel Lines andAutoamerican by Blondie, the Not TheNine O'Clock News LP and Abba'sSuper Trouper.

The Judge said that the plaintiffs hadmade out an unchallengeable case underthe UK copyright law. He said thatthere was no viable or arguable defenceunder Community law.

Simons argued under Article 10 of theTreaty of Rome which provided that

16 jobs lost as RecordSales decides to closeRECORD SALES, the first company tospecialise in independent promotion inrecord stores, has ceased operations. The 16 staff have been made redundant, although existing commitments arebeing fulfilled.

Record Sales was formed four yearsago by Richard Jakubowski and AlanWade, but has latterly faced competi-tion with the emergence of Bullet, andPromopeople, the company formed byWade following his departure from RSseveral months ago. At the time Waderecruited a number of the RS team, butthese had all been replaced by the timeJakubowski took the decision to discon-tinue operations.

Jakubowski stressed to RB that hisdecision had not been a direct result ofWade's departure. He explained thatthere had been a noticeable decline inthe work available from major com-

panies, which still accounted for themajority of chart records. Independentswere less able to afford the £1,000 -plus aweek required to utilise independentpromotion.

"We are unable to cut corners to cutcosts," said Jakubowski, noting thatexpansion of the industry chart panelhad made in-store promotion moredifficult to undertake satisfactorily.

"It is no longer enough to chart arecord. It needs to make the Top 30 tomake sense. Some of our competitionmight tell a diferent story but I'ddoubt it. In-store promotion is one partof the mix and other areas may be morecost-effective at a time when the wholearea of promotion, sales and distributionis continuing to change," he said.

"And while dealer promotion com-panies go for prestige rather than profit, the change is inevitable."

Cokell explained that 5,000 five -inchversions of the Squeeze single 'AnotherNail In My Heart' had been shrink-wrapped with 'Tempted' and only madeavailable through the company's salesteam, but he said he did not know of any`one free for every single bought' offeron Bill Wyman's single.

"I keep a very close eye on the amountof free goods given away by the salesteam, and I can assure you that there isno chance of A&M giving away half-price singles on a national basis throughour representatives," he said. "Wewould never knowingly breach the BPIcode of conduct."

And RCA's joint deputy managingdirector John Howes strongly denieddealer claims that they could obtain any

RCA single outside the Top 30 fromtheir local salesman absolutely free.

"We occasionally give special offerson certain singles as long as dealers sellthem at 50p," he said. "But if we weregiving away the kind of quantities youare talking about, it would be commer-cial suicide. Obviously we can't visitevery dealer in the country, so weconcentrate on top singles accounts. Wegive away copies of new singles to makesure that they are in stock in the bigshops when the record gets airplay."

BPI director general John Deaconcommented: "None of these offerswould appear to contravene the BPIcode of conduct. There is nothing in thecode to say which dealers should benefitfrom record company special promo-tions."

The Judge dismissed a motion againsta fifth defendent,Warneckey Marine andawarded costs in its favour. He awardedthe BPI all other costs in the action.

After the case, Derek Cumberland, legal executive with BPI solicitors, saidthe industry watchdog would now com-mence proceedings against all importersof parallel Canadian records. AS RECORD BUSINESS WENT

RECORD MERCHANDISERS com-mercial director David Hammond -looking for a sales expansion in thecoming year.

Virgin & Zombaresign from MPAVIRGIN MUSIC and Zomba Music -two of the UK's most successful inde-pendent publishers - have resignedfrom the Music Publishers Associationin a wrangle over 1981 subscription fees.

Publishers' annual contribution to therunning of the MPA are based on eachcompany's individual turnover. BothVirgin and Zomba's contributions in-creased dramatically this year because oftheir success with groups like Police andStray Cats.

"Because we have been so successfulwith one act, Police, we suddenly foundourselves in the same subscriptionbracket as EMI and Chappell," ex-plained Virgin Music general managerBrian Dunham. "But we just don't havethe same size of catalogue as thosecompanies, and the benefits we derivefrom the MPA don't bear any relation tothe fees."

Zomba's Ralph Simon gave his com-pany's concentration on internationalactivities as one reason for quitting theMPA. But he added: "In the light of thebenefits of membership it is very expen-sive - although I think the MPA doesperform an important function for thebroad mass of publishers."

MPA Secretary, Peter Dadswell, saidhe was very "surprised" by the doubleresignation. "We tried very hard to keepthem, but their argument was that theMPA did not offer them very much. You can only get out what you put in andneither company has put much into theMPA."

Dadswell said that the next review ofthe MPA's fee structure would be at theAGM next December.

Ins & OutsSIMON ISKANDER has beenappointed planning and research man-ager at EMI Records reporting tomarketing director Peter Buckleigh. He will be responsible for chart andsales analysis and market research.

In the company's international divi-sion Marion Chugg has joined thepress and promotion department, re-placing Connie Sutterlin and reportingto international promotion managerTern Berg. Kwai Chen has joined theexport division reporting to repertoiremanager Mike Heatley.

RM poised for a widerentertainments moveAFTER A year which had seen a 12percent gross sales increase to top £33million, Record Merchandisers was saidby managing director Hasan Akhtar tobe 'positioning itself as a more widely -based home entertainment company' atits annual sales conference held lastweekend in Droitwich.

Delegates were told that the companynow supplies around 15 percent of allrecords and pre-recorded tapes boughtin the UK.

And looking to the new financial year, commercial director David Hammondsaid RM was seeking to increase grosssales value to more than £36 million tocapitalise on recent moves into videoand the expanding 'sundries' market.

"We have substantially increased ourmarketing budget for '81-82 and weintend to gain even more support fromour suppliers by way of co-operative TVand press advertising, in-store video, display boards, windows and consumerpromotions," said Hammond.

On the subject of the company's£250,000 investment in video Ham-mond added that he hoped rental couldbe developed on a simple and controlledbasis, especially in the High Streetmultiples which are sensitive to staffcosts and profit per square foot, withoutdetracting from traditional record andtape business.

The conference theme was 'SoundMerchandising', and delegates were toldby the head office sales team how a newfoundation for expansion had been laidin the past year and of sales andmarketing plans for the coming 12months.

In particular, plans were presenteddetailing the budgeted growth for theWoolworth account on both singles andpre-recorded tape following the HighStreet giant's recent investment in newstore equipment.

The company will be aiming at aone-to-one tape to album sales ratiowhile plans to expand the full pricealbum market - especially within theunder 24 -year -old age group - werediscussed.

Newly -appointed buying controller

Kingsley Grimble stressed the import-ance of recognising that different typesof music have very different sales pat-terns.

In RM's experience, heavy metalalbums have a very high initial demandbut start to tail off dramatically afterthree or four weeks, sometimes achiev-

" ing high sales with relatively littlepromotion and minimal airplay.

In contrast, MOR LPs often takelonger to hit a sales peak but remainsteady sellers for longer periods. Theycan also be more expensive to promotebecause they are often sold to occasionalor uncommitted record buyers whoneed motivating through high -costmarketing strategies like a TV campaignor prolonged airplay exposure.

"Our product managers have not onlygot to have a feel for different music thatmight sell, but they also need a good ideaof who is going to buy it, and how manyof those people use our stores regular-ly," said Grimble.

Success for`Trax' fashionshop discconcessionsRECORD MERCHANDISERS is nowrunning five record departments for theTop Man fashion chain on a concessionbasis.

Trading under the name `Trax' theyare effectively stores within stores inSouthampton, Plymouth, Brighton,Southend and Belfast.

The company's sales controller, DaveBowler told the RM sales conference inDroitwich last week that the primaryaim of the Trax outlets was to create theright image and atmosphere to attractyoung people. That applied not just toshop design but also to the range ofrepertoire sold.

"With the success of Trax, the open-ings for Record Merchandisers will beimmense," said Bowler. "A concessionoperation can then be offered to new andestablished customers."

AFTER FIVE months of negotiationswith Bernard Chevry, the MPA hassecured an agreement which meansMIDEM '82 stand prices for UK pub-lishers will remain exactly the same aslast year. Originally, they were due toincrease by about 17 percent.

"We are still awaiting written con-firmation of the agreement," explainedMPA secretary Peter Dadswell, "ButBernard Chevry has now agreed to holdstand prices at last year's rate afterinitially offering to cut the proposedincrease to 14 percent."

Dadswell also revealed that the MPAis hoping to negotiate a better deal forpublishers who intended to participatein MIDEM '82 on a 'walkabout' basis."It could take the form of an additionalgovernment subsidy," he said.

Wayne Bickerton at State Music hasdecided to make his company's sophisti-cated computerised royalty programmeavailable to other companies. Bickertonsays the State computer has sparecapacity and he is prepared to rent outtime to independent publishers whodon't have their own facilities.

"The computer has virtually unli-mited capacity because it works on a discsystem," explained Bickerton. "Theprogramme itself has often beenadmired by US lawyers and PRS staff. The system is fully confidential becauseeach outside company could have itsown disc for storing its own royalties-information."

Bickerton, who has spent the last 18months establishing his Odyssey Stu-dios complex, says he has now startedwriting again. "I've been working onsome TV themes," he revealed.

Another writer specialising in the tvand movie themes area - Harry South -has just signed a worldwide publishingdeal with Chappell Music. South won anIvor Novello Award for his theme musicfor The Sweeney and he recently wrotethe Chinese Detective theme.

Alan Melina of Chappell Music saysthe signing of South will strengthenChappell's thrust into the film, TV andjingles business. Video is a target areatoo.

One of the few companies that comeclose to matching the wealth of 'pop'standards in the Chappell catalogue isJobete Music. Having survived an ambi-tious acquisition bid from the Entertain-ment Company earlier this year, theMotown publishing arm now claims tobe the UK's Number Two publisher, based on current 1981 sales.

"But we could be the top publisher bythe end of the year," said Jobete's IvanChandler. "We've had a string of majorhits with Smokey Robinson, MichaelJackson and Stevie Wonder - and thereare more hit singles on the way, includ-ing covers by Quincy Jones and TheCommodores."

Having got his feet under the md'sdesk at Southern Music, Roy Tempestsays he is planning a 'creative facelift' forthe company. He wants to build on thesuccess of Southern's extensive backcatalogue which is currently claimingchart success with singles by RedSovine, Matchbox and the 'B' side of theKate Bush record, 'Sat In Your Lap'.

Disco DealerTHE BISECTION of the week by theRoyal Wedding and consequent pro-duction reshuffles at RB have meantthat the current disco chart needed tobe compiled slightly earlier than usualand from a somewhat reduced panel. This may well have had the effect ofholding the newest of the really hotsellers, which in some cases had notreached all dealers by the time theycompiled their returns. This appliesparticularly to Phyllis Hyman's 'YouSure Look Good To Me', which waseasily London's best seller, and if itrepeats its sales pattern as it reachesthe rest of the country, will be ournumber one next week. Arista is alsorushing the Hyman albun Can't WeFall In Love Again, a huge import sellerfor some three weeks already. In viewof Randy Crawford's astounding cros-sover album success with Secret Com-bination, it will be interesting to seewhether Phyllis and Evelyn King canfollow suit on LP after cracking a wider

market with very strong 12-inchers.Motown, currently in its most active

sales phase for years, scores theweek's highest top 50 debut withanother lady, Teena Marie. 'SquareBiz' is extracted from her album ItMust Be Love, one of the most consis-tently big -selling import packages ofthe last month or so. Rumours that theset had actually been withdrawn in theStates for re -mix and reissue havebeen confirmed by Motown, and it willin fact be the remixed version of thealbum we'll see on UK release veryshortly.

Following the general importstagnation reported in this column lastweek, things seem now to be moving alittle again, at least on the album front.New items into the shops include JeanCam's Sweet And Wonderful (Phi-ladelphia Int.); Welcome Abroad by theLove Unlimited Orchestra (UnlimitedGold); Klymax with Never Underesti-mate The Power Of A Woman (Solar);Billy Preston And Syreeta (Motown);Millie Jackson's Just A Little Bit OfCountry (Spring); the Manhattans withBlack Tie (US Columbia); and Univer-sal Love from Woods Empire (Tabu). From Japan, Sadao Watanabe is backinto some shops with Orange express(Sony/CBS). BARRY LAZELLAn advertisement for 'Roberto Who' by Cayenneon Groove Records which appeared on P11 ofthe issue dated 13 July, carried a wrongcatalogue number for the 12 -in version. Thecorrect number is GP 3012.

Why does BPI need this research?HOW EXTRAORDINARY that theBPI should need to commission anagency to research into falling recordsales. Had they taken any notice at all ofthe weekly contents of this magazineover the last 100 or so issues, the BPIcould have distilled most of the answers, for free, from the editorials and from thewritings of such as Simon Gee andmyself. In an industry based on com-munications, albeit the musical form, itis unfortunate that there is often adistinct lack of it between the purchas-ers and the sellers.

It should come as no surprise, there-fore, to be told of an apparent hostilitybetween retailer and customer. Thiswould be a natural extension of hostilitybetween record companies and retailers.I believe, and have said so many timesbefore, that if such hostility exists it ispurely a function of a lack of com-munication within the industry. Somecompanies, at least, have recognised theproblem. PolyGram, by way of exam-ple, have an executive, David Hearn, who's job title is "Trouble Shooter".(Hands up all the dealers who knowabout him! And hands up all the othermajors who have one, because if they doI don't know about them, and as aretailer I should!)

Here is an illustration of one tiny facet

of the communication problem, andhow it can effect customer relations atthe sharp end. I had cause to criticisePolyGram, in a recent article, for anunannounced slowdown in deliveries. Ittranspired that the computer was beingupdated at the time. If we had beeninformed, instead of a tetchy "don'tknow", we could have explained to thecustomers why their orders were not inon the expected day.

ObservationPost

Incidentally, on the subject of com-munication, on odd occasions I have putpen to paper with thoughts and ideas andsent them to the BPI and RAVRO/MTA. I've never had the courtesy ofeven an acknowledgement. I've beenunder the impression that few dealersbother to write to anybody about any-thing. Indeed, I can count on the fingersof one hand the dealers (and dealers, after all, are at the sharp end and shouldknow what's going on) whose namesappear with any regularity in print in therecord trade press.

The Saatchi and Saatchi report to theBPI says, I understand, that many

potential record buyers in the 25-35 agerange are put off by "hostility at retaillevel". If the 25-35 age range are put off, heavens knows how the over -35s feelabout record shops; terrified, I suspect.S and S also report a "lack of informa-tion" as a put -off to over -25 record -buyers. Had the BPI examined theimplications of the Hilton -Price reviewpublished last year, it might haveoccured to them then to consider thepossible reasons for the telescoping ofthe bulk of record sales into fewer andfewer titles. My simplistic view is thatthe more that records are retailed in`supermarket' fashion, like bakedbeans or soap, the less choice will beoffered.

Simultaneously, will become less like-ly that customers will be afforded theluxury of personal attention and theprivilege of 'information' about themore esoteric material in the recordcompanies catalogues. Is it because of"the take it or leave it" styles of recordretailing that the industry seems to haveabandoned the over -25s? It does seemthe record companies are doing theirbest to remove all that is not in greatdemand from their catalogues - so farthis year the length of deletion listsappears to have out -stripped new -release lists! Since the cream has been

The frustrating experiences of a new shop ownerFOUR MONTHS have passed since Iopened my record and video shop and intrying to open I have had some frustrat-ing experiences with record companies.I thought readers of RB might beinterested to hear what happened.

The shop, Gemini Records, is situ-ated on the A27 east of Southamptonand has 120 square yards of floor spacedevoted to albums, singles, tapes, badges, posters, teeshirts and videos.

After three weeks of hard work Iopened on February 28 and spent a verynervous morning hoping that all wouldgo well, which fortunately it didalthough a few areas had to be tightenedup. The day's takings were very en-couraging and have increased steadilyover the past months.

The hardest task in opening a recordshop is knowing where to obtain sup-plies and which titles to buy. After a lotof deliberation I decided that it would befinancially more viable to use one -stopcompanies, since all major record com-pany distributors require ridiculousopening order payments.

I chose Terry Blood and Wynd-Upand both are giving an excellent service. However, as time passed it becameobvious that to compete I had to receivenew releases as soon as possible andneeded the back-up of record manufac-turers for such as in-store promotion.

I made a list of the companies and forspeed and convenience I telephonedthem all. That is where the frustrationstarted. The conversations went some-thing like this: "Good afternoon, couldyou please put me through to the newaccounts department."

"Hold the line please." (two or threeminutes pass)

By Mike Wild of GeminiRecords in Southampton.

I explained what I wanted and wasasked to wait. Then came the familiaranswer of "You'll have to ring anothernumber." I did and went through thewhole procedure again. In some cases ittook nearly two months until I finallyreceived my account numbers.

When they arrived I phoned thecompany and asked them to arrange fora representative to call, supply anup-to-date catalogue and supply displaymaterial. I was told that it was all beingarranged and looked forward to havingthe advantages of having accounts. I wasliving in cloud cuckoo land.

In 18 years in business I have neverexperienced such a lethargic attitude toanyone starting a new business. To dateonly one rep has called. Thanks RCA. ACBS rep phoned two months ago to saythat he would call in a fortnight but hehasn't arrived yet.

After requesting details of EMI re-cord tokens and cards I placed an orderfor £200 worth four or five weeks ago. Sofar I have only received one packet ofcards and nothing else.

I will admit that I do not order in vastquantities, but from acorns do oak treesgrow. It occurs to me that the companiesare only interested in chart shops andhigh street multiples. A lot of businesscan be gained from smaller growingoutlets such as ourselves. Why do I haveto chase companies for information?

Every week there are more than 100singles and albums released and it isimpossible to know what category of themusic industry each record falls into asthere is no classification code. Without

knowing whether a particular record isgoing to sell in my area I gamble andconsequently any profits are lost onrecords which have to be returned orsold off cheap.

Why can't companies use a classifica-tion code, for example: J -jazz, JZ-jazzfunk, D -disco, S -soul, etc. I am surethat record dealers would stock morenew releases if a little of the gamble wastaken out of ordering.

The record industry is in such a ficklestate with imports, discounts etc, thatthe less the gamble the more stable itcould become. After all, we are all inbusiness to make money.

I hope that I was the only new recorddealer to have this sort of experience, but I doubt it. With or without the helpof the record manufacturers I intend tomake my shop somewhere that mycustomers will respect. I am doing mybest to supply the type of music andultimately the entertainment they want.

OUR PRICE, Charing Cross Road, found a new way of keeping cool whenthey invited customers to bring in thelargest piece of ice in a competition to

whipped off by the multiples, back -catalogue is really all that's left for thespecialist retailers. Now that source isincreasingly drying up.

As much as blank tape and parallelimports may be to blame for falling LPsales, could it not be that the percentagefall in album sales reflects the percen-tage decline in record retail outlets, particularly those of a small or special-ised nature?

Plastic sheetingto combat riotsCITY CENTRE riots have caused manyrecord stores to invest in protectivescreens. Record shops are an obvioustarget for looters and steel grills andaluminium covers have been the order ofthe day recently.

Help may be on its way with a newsafety film to be launched by an Oxford-shire company called DIY Plastics thisAutumn. Clear plastic sheeting is stuckto the inside of the window pane and thecompany claims that it will stop the glassshattering.

The advantages one that the plasticfilm is less expensive, easier to fit and, also eliminates ultra violet radiationwhich causes goods to fade, claims thecompany.

Already widely used in the USA thefilm comes in 36 inch 40 or 60 inch rolls. The price of the narrow roll is £2.76 perfoot. DIY Plastics also markets glasssubstitute plastic sheeting and securitysheeting.

With damage to retail premisesalready on the increase before thecurrent spate of riots shop protectionhas become an increasing necessity anddealers can have 24 hour window dis-plays and safe stores.

An increase of 5% inVAT introduced by the Minister forFinance in a mini -Budget last weekmeans that the retail price of records willrise by that amount. The rise in the rateof VAT is not viewed with too muchconcern by record executives here -as aharsher Budget was expected. Exciseduty on records now stands at 40% butno rise was made in this. One record

The reason for the band'swithdrawal seems shrouded in mysterybut the fact that they may be wanted forquestioning by Irish authorities about a

The event is an annual one held bythe GAA to raise funds to help pay offthe debt on the city's Gaelic Footballground. Last year, the bill was toppedby Joan Baez. McLean was the starattraction two years ago when over28,000 people paid to see the Americanartist. Also on the bill were The WolfeTones, The Furey Brothers, DaveyArthur and Bagatelle.EMI (IRELAND) LTD are currentlyrunning a two -for -one campaign on alltheir Irish albums and cassettes. "Wehave a catalogue of Irish material whichwe promote in this way during thesummer months," said Freddie Middle-ton, marketing manager with the com-pany. For every Irish album bought theconsumer gets a second free. Thecompany also benefits from the numberof foreign students who come to Irelandto learn English. "Every year we do verywell with The Beatles material withSpanish students," said Middleton,"but this year business seems to havedropped off. I think it's due to the stateof the Irish pound and the bus strike inDublin which hinders visitors trying toget into the city centre shops."

Twenty-seven songs, including oneby the man who composed 'MakingYour Mind Up' (winner of the 1981Eurovision Song Contest) have beenselected for the finals of the CastlebarInternational Song Contest. There wereover 2,000 entries from some 37 coun-tries. Among the eleven British compos-ers selected for the finals are Andy Hill,co -writer of the Bucks Fizz Euro-winner, and Ed Welch, co -writer of lastyear's Castlebar winner.

Irish composers with entries in thelast leg of the competition are CathalDunne, who sang for Ireland at theEurovision Song Contest in Paris in1979, RTE disc -jockey Ken Stewart, and former Johnny Logan pianist AndyO'Callaghan.

Berger Paints who sponsor the contesthave a prize fund of IR£15,000. Thismakes the Castlebar International SongContest the richest in Europe. Thewinning composer in the Song Sectionwill receive IR£5,000. In the OrchestralSection the first prize is IR£1,500.Entries from 18 countries were receivedfor the Orchestral Section.

Once again commercial sponsorshipin Ireland has managed to raise the levelof such an event to an unprecedentedhigh. "Due to the continued generosityof Berger Paints, we have managed tomaintain our reputation as the premiersong contest in Europe and this has beenfurther enhanced this year with moreentries from more countries than everbefore. Almost all Eurovision SongContest composers submitted entriesand the overall standard was very high,"commented Contest Director, PaddyMcGuiness. LIVE MUSIC

Varied Icehousesound needs hitICEHOUSELondon, The VenueALREADY WELL on its way to beingthe biggest Australian band since theEasybeats, Icehouse entertained an au-dience largely consisting of media andother Chrysalis guests with an inspiredset of rock numbers which indicatedenormous potential.

The album of the same name has gonetriple platinum in Australia and enteredthe US charts but the UK might be aharder nut to crack. Icehouse are indi-vidually highly proficient musicians andin Iva Davies have a personality frontman.

Onstage the music swings from onestyle to another which British audiencesare unused to. One moment the musiccan have the intensity of Ultravox, thenext the boogie of Thin Lizzy.

In David Bowie, Davies has chosen adifficult model to follow but certainly hehas the star's versatility. His voice canmeet sweet pop ranges one minute andsoar through rockers like Lennon's`Cold Turkey' the next.

Icehouse are one of the most profes-sional bands to emerge in recent yearsand when they tour later this year aresure to earn a British following. A hitsingle would help and on the strength ofThe Venue performance it can only be amatter of time.

ONE NIGHT STANDLondon, Apollo VictoriaONE NIGHT STAND, which marksthe entrepreneurial debut in the WestEnd of Chrysalis as co -backers (withHarry Saltzman) of a legit stage produc-tion, is an attempt to capture in wordsand music the atmosphere of the mid -60s Beat Boom. Written by folk come-dian Mike Harding, who experiencedthe highs and lows of his own search for

stardom in that era of excitement, itcharts a familiar path. The story con-cerns the first tentative efforts of TerryYoung and the Teen Beats, a group ofCatholic grammar school boys, to over-come parental prejudice against theirmusic, and grope (in all senses) theirway to stardom via youth clubs andrecords to the dizzy heights of thePalladium and an execrable hit record`Do Ye Twist John Peel', performedwith due reverene to the Kinks, inhunting pink outfits. At the end theyare, in the present day, back where theystarted, pathetically trying to come togrips with the attitudes of a differentgeneration.

Performed with all the humoroussubtlety of a seaside postcard by theoriginal cast from Oldham, where it wasa runaway success, the show has mo-ments when laughter comes easily, butnot enough of them. The evident enthu-siasm of the cast almost wins the day, despite a script which sadly runs out ofsteam and development after the inter-val. The actors also play the music andwhile initially the amateurish approachis endearing, it never gets any better andover two and one-half hours this becom-es exceedingly tedious.

DEPECHE MODELondon, The VenueDEPECHE MODE have come a longway since this reviewer last saw themperform at the Embassy Club earlier thisyear when they had just recorded theirfirst record. This time they played to apacked house and soon had the audiencedancing to their brand of futurist elec-tronic music.

All their numbers were very wellreceived particularly their current hitsingle 'New Life', two encores wereplayed including their first big indie hit`Dreaming Of Me'. In all, an excellentevening's entertainment from one ofLondon's most exciting bands.

Album ReviewsCITIZENS BANNED: Wall To Wall(Chesnut Records CHER 1) Prod:Allan Thorpe/Tim WheatleyA humorous album dedicated to a cause, namely the legalization of CB Radio. The theme/joke tends to wear a bit thinafter a few of the admittedly imaginativenarrative songs, but two of the high-lights are 'Dear Mr Whitelaw' - a pleaaddressed to the Home Secretary, and`Yellow Bird Ditty' - a string of abuseaimed at the Post Office's Busby crea-ture. Probably for enthusiasts only, buttheir numbers are growing . . .

IVOR BIGGUN: Bras on 45 (DeadBadger BOP 6) Prod: Robin LangridgeMore crude but amusing material fromthe peculiar Ivor Biggun. Among thoseaccurately pillored on this three -tracksingle are Gary Numan - 'Are MiceElectric' Ian Drury and Tenpole Tudor.Quite fun, at least on the first hearing.

MUM REVIEWS

Top 10DEBBIE HARRY: Koo Koo (Chrysa-lis CHR 1347) Prod: Nile Rogers/Bernard EdwardsNot entirely successful solo debut fromMs Harry which attempts to melt thedancefloor genius of the Chic writer -production team with the tricky edge ofBlondie's Chris Stein. The singer hasalready proved her rapping class onprevious outings, so numbers like'Backfired' and Military Rap' are strongenough, and the ballad 'Surrender' issweet and sassy. However, Debbiesounds caught between two stools onmuch of the material at a time whenshe needs a firm direction to build onpast achievements. No doubt thealbum will build out of the discos togain a real hold outside of dedicatedDebbie Harry fans, and there shouldbe enough of those hard-liners toensure a high chart entry.

DEF LEPPARD: High 'n' Dry (Verti-go 6359 045) Prod: Robert John`Mutt' LangeSecond album from one of the leadinglights of the new wave of heavy bands. This is one of those annoying albumswhere the sleeve listing and trackorder don't agree DJs beware) but theenergy of the group cannot be faulted.Ten tracks, filled with a razorbladevoice, wailing guitars and drivingrhythms are sure to keep the fanshappy.

STEVIE NICKS: Bella Donna (WEAK 99169) Prod: Jimmy !ovineNotable for a marvellous, moody duetwith Tom Petty on 'Stop Draggin' MyHeart Around' Steve Nicks new soloalbum has its high spots, and evenwhen merely cruising - on numberslike 'After The Glitter Fades' or 'HowStill My Love' - the sound is well up tothe standard of her best easy -listeningmoments from the Rumours LP. Notsurprisingly, she has assembled somefine musicians, paramount among themRoy Bittan from the E Street Band anda driving organ player, BenmontTench, who does much to build atmos-phere on the best cuts. Certain to sellwell with airplay behind it.

Top 60COCKNEY REJECTS: The Power &The Glory (EMI ZONO 105) Prod:Steve ChurchyardThe Rejects were once synonymouswith million mile an hour thrashes;yobbo anthems which sold well butgathered bad reviews like a mechanic-al street sweeper. All that haschanged. How the fans will react to thenew sound has yet to be seen but thereis one track on this album whichcouldn't even be described as rock.Several others are intelligent, persua-sive pop songs of high quality.

Z.Z. TOP: El Loco (Warner BrosK56929) Prod: Bill HamTexas has produced some fine musicthrough its fusion of cultural styles butZZ Top- three men with beards - stick

to traditional laid-back southern bluesof Allman Bros fashion. Billy Gibbonsplays some superb slide guitar andsings with a fair amount of passion. The end result is an Eagles soundwithout the harmonies. Without OGWTto promote the release it is hard to seeEl Loco following the success ofDeguello.

Best of the restEVELYN KING: I'm In Love (RCA LP5048) Prod: Morrie Brown/WillieLester/Lawrence JonesThis album heralds the return ofEvelyn King, with a change of produc-ers resulting in a very strong discoalbum. As the title track is a smash hitin the disco charts and has crossedover into the national charts this albumshould sell well in the pop market aswell as the disco market. She soundsequally as good on the two balladtracks as she does on the uptempomaterial.

WAILING SOULS: Fire House Rock(Greensleeves GREL 21) Prod: Hen-ry Junjo LawesOne of the world's most experiencedreggae bands The Wailing Souls havebeen around in one form or another for16 years after graduating from thesame 'school' as Bob Marley and hisWailers. 'Kingdom Rise Kingdom Fall'was a sizeable reggae hit and thisalbum should follow suit. One of fewalbums not to call upon Sly and Robbieit features former Black Uhuru singerGarth Dennis.

CARL CARLTON: Carl Carlton (20thCentury Fox/RCA T-628) Prod: LeonHaywoodAnything Leon Hayward gets involvedwith is bound to have class and heproduced, arranged, played on thisalbum and wrote five numbers. Carltonhas a naturally soulful voice but theappeal is limited to the confines ofmacho lyrics such as his hit single'She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's BuiltShe's Stacked)'. This album has beena steady import seller.

KENI BURKE: You're The Best (RCALP 5059) Prod: Kenneth M. BurkeA sophisticated album from Burke withhelp, lyrically, from Bill Withers andCurtis Mayfield. Already causing ex-citement as an import this album hasstrong commercial potential and hasalready had one minor hit single. Thewhole album is musically very pleasantand Todd Rundgren's 'Love Is TheAnswer' is outstanding.

TRIMMER & JENKINS: The Fantas-tic Trimmer & Jenkins, Live fromLondon's Fabulous Comic Strip(Charisma CLASS 10) Prod: IanTrimmer/Billy Jenkins/Mike AllenHaving sweated buckets supporting inclubs, pubs, open air festivals andconcert halls all over the country,Trimmer & Jenkins at last get theircrack at the big time. As the titlesuggests, this is a live, somewhattoned -down rendering of the duo'sidiosyncratic and cynical set, begin-

ning with the well -loved 'Jazz andPoetry' (sponsored by the Arts Coun-cil) and running through the sick 'AndWe Love It' climaxing with 'We LikeBananas'. Unfortunately, the LP yieldsfewer laughs than expected despiteIan Trimmer's best sleazy attempts toget the joint on his side and Mr.Jenkins' anarchic contributions onguitar. True originals, but it will betough to sell a lot of albums.

KING SOUNDS AND THEISRAELITES: Forward (GroveMusic ILPS 9663) Prod: KingSounds and the IsraelitesHigh class helping of British reggaefeaturing the smokey vocals of KingSounds and utilising a galaxy of bothlocal and Jamaican players. Strong onpolitics and polemic, the band evenmanages to turn 'Batman' into asymbol of Babylon and crack out aloping version of 'Patches' in amongthe usual mixture of Rasta and socialcomment.

DESPERADOES: Desperados(Charisma CLASS 11) Prod:Rudolph CharlesThe Desperados are Trinidad's big-gest steel drum band stars, and play allover the world as travelling musicalambassadors, cooking up happy ver-sions of everything from classicalextracts to hits from the pop charts. Here they samba their way throughmaterial as diverse as 'Flight of theBumble Bee' and 'Don't Leave Me ThisWay' with considerable applomb andcertainly sound as if they enjoy them-selves. Charisma has released the LPunder a sponsorship deal, and with theextra promotion that would not normal-ly come the way of an album like this, there may be interest outside of thenormal ethnic market.

VARIOUS: Music For Royal Wed-dings (CBS 73285)Selected before the music for lastweek's wedding had been announcedthis album has seven pieces (out of 10)actually used in the service. It repre-sents some inspired work by CBS inchoosing the best wedding and patrio-tic tunes. `Trumpet Voluntary', 'Jupitor'and 'Pomp & Circumstance' are themost popular works.

STEVIE NICKS: top tip for easy -listening Fleetwood Mac sound.

OST: Riding High (Jambo RecordsJAM 2)Soundtrack from Eddie Kidd's filmdebut contains a fair selection of toppop stars and records. The Police,Pretenders, Boomtown Rats,Squeeze, Madness, Dire Straits, LeneLovich, Sky, Cliff Richard, Chic, JoeJackson and Gary Numan are repre-sented by their hit numbers. Manytracks have been specially recordedfor the film but this type of soundtrackhas a poor record for success.

GRACE KENNEDY: One Voice (BBCREB 419) Prod: Phillip SwernThis album features many of the songscurrently being performed by GraceKennedy on her BBC -1 series, anaccolade which came in double-quicktime following the positive response tothe shows first time round on BBC -2earlier this year. Her striking goodlooks combined with a vivacious vocalstyle combine to make her an artistwith real potential and future prospectswill be indicated by consumer re-sponse to the plug given to the albumafter the shows. For the time being hermusical direction is ill-defined, withsophisticated ballads jostling with R&Brock, Motown and Dionne Warwick.

MILES DAVIS: The Man With TheHorn (CBS 84708) Prod: Teo MaceroAfter his five-year absence from thestudios, Miles Davis' comebackalbum is not destined to have the jazzworld enthusing that he's found sometantalising new musical direction topursue. He has in fact played safe witha programme that takes in disco -funk,jazz-rock, straight ahead jazz, onetrack with a vocal, and another whichdoesn't sound too far distant fromsome of Herb Alpert's more recentstuff. Still, Davis himself, whethertightly muted or flowingly open, playswith tremendous flair and authority, particularly on 'Aida'.

JOHN TOWNLEY: More Than ADream (EMI EMC 3371) Prod: JonKellyWise of EMI to persevere with JohnTownley, who proves with his secondLP that he has a real talent for writingclassy soft -rock ballads and deliveringthem in a muscular style, reminiscentof that other sadly largely ignoredBritish solo artist Chris Rea. His side-men include Stuart Tosh, David Paton,Dick Morrisey and Max Middletonwhile producer Jon Kelly has given atough exterior to the best songs like`Won't You Please' and 'War Zone'.

DAVID SWARBRICK: Smiddyburn(Logo 1029) Prod: John WoodTo all intents and purposes this isFairport Convention re-formed, minusthe vocals of the late Sandy Denny.Messrs Thompson, Nicol, Pegg, Mat -tacks and Rowlands are all on hand toassist Swarbrick, thankfully restored tofull fluency after a series of operationsto restore his failing hearing. Theleader's fiddle playing is, of course, thefinest ever to come from the folk scene, but his deft mandolin playing is alsoextensively featured on this acousticcollection of folk material arranged tosuit contemporary requirements.
