Inside Earth

Introduction
• Earthquakes are movements or vibrations in earth
• They are caused by the real ease of stored energy in Earth's outer layer
• This realse of energy causes sudden shift of rock as well as other kinds of changes
• Scientists feel and listen to earth by using instruments called seismograph
• A seismograph detects, measures, and records the energy of earthquakes vibration
• Pressure within earth can cause rocks in its outer layer to brake move, the brake is called a fault.
Primary Waves
• Called P waves
• Fastest waves
• First to arrive at a distance point
• Travels through solids, liquids, gases
Secondary Waves
• Called S waves
• Slower than P waves
• Arrive later at a distance point
• Travel through solids only
Surface Waves
• Also called L waves
• Slowest waves of all
• Felt at the surface cause the most damage
Crust
• Solid rock that makes up Earth's outer layer.
• It's deeper under continents than under oceans.
Mantle
• Layer of rock lying below the crust
• Rocks in the region can move or slowly move or slowly flow because of great pressure and high temperatures
Outer core
• Liquid layer below the mantle
• It is made out of melted iron
Inner core
• A sphere of solid materials at Earth's center
