We made it to our second edition! Now that the summer is but a distant memory we can focus on what for me is the most exciting approach to next summer I can remember. After years of planning, the London 2012 Games will be upon us in a few short months, and there’s an unparalleled buzz around those who work in sport.

However for those of us not directly involved in the games, it’s all about realising the ‘legacy’. For me legacy is all about people - specifically the people who make sport happen at a local level. That’s why I’m please to report that we’ve published our coaching strategy and are investing thousands of pounds in helping those over the age of 16 get into leadership, through our Sport Makers programme. At the same time, Mission Possible continues to provide support for those with a passion for coaching using the Olympic and Paralympic values to inspire thousands of people to enjoy and excel in sport.

Creating opportunities for new and existing local sports leaders and coaching heroes is what Coaching Hampshire & IOW’s mission is all about.

Coaching update

Sport Hampshire & IOW is part of a national Olympic legacy programme to support hundreds of thousands of new hours of grassroots sport across the country.

Sport Makers provides an opportunity for anyone aged 16 or over to be a sporting hero!

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create a lasting legacy and everyone can play their part. Every one of us can help make a positive change, from inviting friends to join you on a Saturday morning run, setting up a new sports team or helping out with a sporting charity event.

Also, if you are an organisation, company or charity and are looking to recruit volunteers

or develop volunteering schemes, Sport Makers can help.

The programme aims to inspire close to 1,500 people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to get involved and make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. Every Sport Maker will be invited to an informal and interactive workshop where they’ll gain the skills and opportunities to get involved in sport in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Sir Steve Redgrave

Ambassador for the Sport Makersprogramme said:

“The thing I want to see more than anything is more people out enjoying what sport has to offer, but we need your help to make it happen”.

You will become the sort of sporting hero that makes a difference to the lives of other people – and have a good time doing it.

So go on… Be the Inspiration – Be a Sport Maker.

There will also be workshops designed to help those who want to take a more active role in local sports provision, whether it be as a coach, official or mentor.

We’re keen to hear from any women who want to share their own personal stories or want to take an active part in the month long event. We’re keen to ensure that men and women all over the county can access something that inspires us to challenge current perceptions and broadens our understanding of the complex challenges facing women in sport.

or Paralympic medal, coaches help people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to overcome personal challenges and achieve personal bests.

The Master Class SeriesThe Mission Possible Master Class Series has been created to provide an innovative way of promoting broader development opportunities for coaches. There’s a wide variety of workshops on offer, running throughout the year, from November 2011 until July 2012. Sessions are aimed at a variety of coaches representing all levels and all disciplines.

Each session will draw upon one of the seven Olympic and Paralympic values and offer an opportunity for coaches to share ideas and discuss broader topics surrounding coaching. The Master Class Series will provide an opportunity for you to learn from other industry professionals and encourage you to think more extensively about your coaching style, your coaching values and the content of, and science behind, your coaching sessions.

Women in SportProbably the most exciting of the local events in 2012 will be our Women in Sport celebration, currently planned to take place in June. This will be a month of events aimed at inspiring women to be more involved in sport, not just as participants, but as sports leaders and coaches as well. During the month we’ll focus on pioneering women in sport, including national heroes and those a little closer to home. There’ll be exhibitions focused on case studies and real stories of how local people experience sport and the challenges they face in taking active roles as role models and innovators in a largely male dominated industry.

The London GamesIn 2012 almost 15,000 athletes representing 204 nations and competing in 46 sports will compete at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Whilst there are no official figures available on the number of coaches who will attend the games, there’s little doubt that thousands of coaches will be watching to see how their protégés will perform.

The Olympics and Paralympics touch so many people, not least the athletes and coaches of tomorrow. It’s our responsibility, as coaches, to ensure we use this opportunity to raise our game and reinvigorate our coaching to ensure a lasting legacy for sport in the UK, England and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The unsung heroes!Whether you’re the coach who helps a child take their first step into the sporting arena; encourages a teenager or adult to try something new; help senior citizens to maintain a healthy lifestyle; or guide an athlete towards their place on the starting line - you play a vital role in both the mental and physical wellbeing of our nation. Whilst not everyone can win an Olympic

Multi-Skills – What’s it all about? How often have you heard coaches marvel at the lack of athletic ability of their players? Equally, how many coaches are able to accurately identify underlying physical imbalances that prevent a player from being balanced, quick or coordinated. Movement (or ‘physical’) literacy is simply the ability to perform fundamental movements with confidence and under control. Without these fundamental movement skills many people not only fail to achieve their athletic potential, but

Multi Skills coaching course. sports coach UK (scUK) has also signed The Mountbatten School up as a licensed Multi-Skills Development Training Partner allowing the school to deliver the qualification. The Multi Skills Level 2 qualification will become an essential part of any coaches professional development and be a vital component for any coach hoping to work in Hampshire Schools in the future.

The Multi Skills qualification is aimed at coaches who either hold a recognised NGB Level 2 qualification or who are working towards one. The course consists of both theory components and practical components which are delivered over two days. The third day involves assessment of the candidate in the coach’s natural setting – not simulated with other coaches. Assessment will be rigorous and potentially on-going as the principles are embedded.

The first course will be held in Hampshire in early November with additional dates to

generally go through life feeling awkward and lack the confidence to enjoy any level of sport or physical activity for sustained periods. The ability to kick, catch or strike a ball; move sideways at speed or change direction, all rely on a combination of agility, coordination and balance (the ABCs). In other words, for every technical skill involved in sport, it’s underpinned by one of the ABCs.

For talented athletes having a functional strength (the combination of cardiovascular, neuromuscular and proprioceptive adaption) is key to performing complex movements with accuracy, speed and over sustained periods of time. Simply stated movement literacy or ‘multi-skills’ is essential for any person wishing to participate in sport, whatever their level.

Pat Salmon, Director for Coaching at the Mountbatten School explains, “its vitally important that teachers and coaches understand the difference between Multi-Skills and Multi-Sports, as its evident that some practitioners are using the terms interchangeably. Multi-Skills is something that every child should experience, whether at school or in a club environment. Even adults who haven’t experienced this approach before, can gain significant benefits from developing improved movement literacy”.

Are you being recognised?

It’s generally common knowledge that saying “thank you” is one of the most powerful ways of recognising the immense contribution that coaches make to the lives of millions of people all over the UK. Whether it’s a child thanking their coach after the session or a small token of appreciation at the end of the season: recognition really does matter.

Each year Sport Hampshire & IOW’s Sports Awards help to recognise the achievements and efforts of a vast array of people. Awards are made to elite performers as well as to stalwarts of the local sporting community – the coaches, officials and volunteers who work behind the scenes to make sport happen locally.

Last year more than 25 grass roots, talent development and elite coaches were nominated in two categories. Tim Nash (Volleyball, Eastleigh) picked up the Participation Coach of the Year award and Jan Crabtree (Netball, Southampton) topped off a very successful year winning the Performance Coach of the Year award.

This year’s celebrations will take place on 21 March 2012 at St. Mary’s Stadium, home to Southampton Football Club. Once again Coaching Hampshire & IOW will support the winner of both awards

with a financial contribution towards ongoing professional development.

This year nominations open on the 28 November 2011 and close on 27 January 2012.

For more information or to download an application form, please go to www.sporthampshireiow.co.uk/ sports-awards

Scholarship Case Studies

Case study 1The Hampshire Wheelchair Racing Group

The group comprises Liz Purbrick, Disability Athletics Support Officer and Christine Benning, Club and Coach Support Officer (both employed by England Athletics)Peter Hull, MBE, the County Development Officer for Disability Sport, Dr. Bronwin Carter, a specialist in coaching athletes with a disability, Michael Coker, representing the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Athletics Network and Alex Trumble, Sports Facilities Development Manager at the University of Winchester. It is due to the commitment of this group that the project got off the ground, but now it’s the coaches who are running the sessions on a monthly basis. The early stages of the project involved applying for funding for a set of specialist racing wheelchairs, recruiting a team of coaches and supporting them to take the necessary qualifications.

The Coaching Hampshire & IOW funding has been fantastic as it has enabled the coaches to take the necessary coaching qualifications. Janet Littlewood from

Winchester and District AC is now a qualified Athletics Coach and Kate Rowe has stepped up her qualifications from a Fitness Instructor to a Coach Assistant. Kate is a wheelchair user herself, who has started to train regularly at the Winchester Sports Stadium in addition to assisting with the coaching at the Hampshire Wheelchair Racing Group sessions.

The coaches are being mentored by an experienced Wheelchair Racing coach for the first six sessions.

The group was launched in August and meets on a monthly basis. The coaches are developing their competencies and have three wheelchair athletes attending regularly. Training will continue to be offered for coaches who want to gain experience to take back to their own athletic clubs. The Club are keen to hear from young people who would like to take up wheelchair racing!

The Hampshire Wheelchair Racing Group meets at the Winchester Sports Stadium on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The monthly sessions are coordinated by Laura Payne who can be contacted on 07515191370 or [email protected]

!Case study 2David Gwiliam

Earlier this year I approached Coaching Hampshire & IOW for assistance with funding to attend a British Cycling Level 2 Cycle Coaching course (L2CCC) held at Bournemouth. The Portsmouth North End Cycle Club (PNECC) didn’t have, at the time, a British Cycling Coach, a Youth Development Strategy, or Welfare Organisation for Youths (under 18 year-olds).

After completing the course, I approached City of Portsmouth Boys’ School, where my son was taking his GCSEs. After being so impressed with the school ethos I began to coach extra-curricular, cycle coaching - affiliated with PNECC, which is now in its third series.

I wanted to enable PNECC to become more youth orientated and develop the club strategy so I produced a Club Safeguarding & Protecting Children Policy, became a Club Committee member and presented it to the club. It was accepted and published on the club website. Part of the policy was to ensure the club had a Welfare Officer.

The help from Coaching Hampshire & IOW supported me and enabled the ‘acorn to grow and produce shoots’. The next coaching professional development I’m working towards is BC Level 2 Road and Time Trial (L2RTT) qualification. PNECC has a very well organised Thursday series of Club and time-trials which run through spring and summer, utilising local routes sanctioned by Cycling Time Trials. This is a growing method of riders testing themselves against the clock appealing to cyclists of all ages, cycling disciplines and Triathletes. These races are well supported by local clubs and also has a policy of ‘come and try’ where total ‘newbies’ can come and get an introduction to ‘testing’.

Coaches, Officials and Volunteers Scholarship Scheme

Want to do more training or improve your skills? Interested in taking the next step, but can’t afford to make the investment? If the answer to either of these questions is “yes”, then our scholarship programme may be for you.

The Scholarship Scheme is designed to increase the number of qualified and skilled coaches, officials and volunteers actively supporting sports participation throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The scheme aims to assist individuals wishing to further develop their coaching, officiating or volunteering skills by completing the governing body award scheme or recognised course appropriate to their needs.

Awards of up to 75% of the total course cost, up to a maximum of £500 can be made. Scholarship applications must be made online and are accepted throughout the year. Awards are made quarterly in June, September, December and March.

Applications are welcomed from individuals and organisations alike - National Governing Bodies of sport, local authorities, voluntary coaches, officials and other volunteers are all invited to apply.

Individuals applying for a scholarship must be a full-time resident of Hampshire including the Unitary Authorities of Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight and must be aged 16 and over. Each application must be countersigned by a Lead Officer - a sports development professional working for a National Governing Body of sport or local authority.

On Saturday 3 September over two hundred players and parents gathered for a workshop with a difference. Not the normal pep talk from the coaches or discussion about goals and aspirations for the season, but one that tackled issues that often get in the way. This was the first workshop of its kind for these clubs.

The feedback has been incredibly positive and many parents and players left with a clearer picture of how they can remove the barriers that exist to them enjoying the challenges of being in a performance environment.

The workshop was run by :

CJ Lee: As well as being Head Coach at Solent Suns he is responsible for Coaching Development in Hampshire. He has a wealth of knowledge around coaching strategies and learning.

Jimmie Guymon: Head Coach of Solent Kestrels. Jimmie had a long successful playing career and was renown for his work ethic and commitment as a player. He knows what it takes to be the best you can be.

Paul Miller: As well as being Chairman of Solent Suns, Paul is a successful Business and Sports Performance Coach who has worked with many young athletes supporting them with the challenges presented by competing at the top level.

When was the last time you truly communicated to the parents of your club about how they can really support the sporting development of their children? This two hour workshop is available to your club now.

Contact PAUL MILLER for

or [email protected]

The creators of this workshop have almost a hundred years combined experience in playing, coaching and parenting elite basketball players. Every season the same issues arise and prevent the young players from giving and being the best they can be. They felt that if they could communicate to an audience of the stakeholders in a young players development there may be a chance they can begin to remove some of the barriers that exist to most young players fulfilling their potential.

You will often hear clubs wanting to aspire to be being “PERFORMANCE CLUBS”, where the aim is to maximize the potential of every young person who joins, but what does that mean to all the stakeholders involved, players, coaches and very importantly the parents?

The belief of these clubs is this is a team effort and there is much we can all do to support young players to help them realize their potential. This workshop shared:

• Precisely what is required of a young athlete physically, mentally and emotionally

• Principles of effective coaching and how that translates to a young athlete’s experience

• How parents (THE MOST INFLUENCIAL PEOPLE IN THEIR LIVES) can best support their children in both words and actions.

The enthusiastic audience also learnt that whilst some people may have a head start in terms of ability that it is NOT the most crucial factor in determining their success.

On Saturday 21 May 2011more than 250 coaches, students and parents attended the inaugural Hampshire Coaching Conference.

The partnership between Southampton Solent University and Sport Hampshire & IOW aimed to bring local coaches from all levels together with students studying Sport Studies, Sport Science and Coaching Studies and Coaching Development to

share ideas and experiences that will help drive coaching and sport forward at a local level. Coaches and students were offered key note presentations from a vast array of elite and expert presenters in the field of business, coaching and athlete development. Terry Butcher, former England Captain and currently Manager of Inverness in the Scottish Premier League, spoke about his belief in the power of leadership, sport psychology and the role of energy in creating winning attitudes and winning teams. He began his powerful delivery by saying “I’ve learned as much about coaching in my 52nd year as I have in the previous 20 years of my coaching career.”

Ben Hunt-Davis thrilled the conference with a blow by blow account of his experience in the lead up to his 2000 Sydney Olympics Gold Medal performance, where he described the dynamics of his

team and their commitment to excellence. “Everyday, we said, today will be a good day, because we’ll make it so!” expressed the positive attitude set out by the team. “Will it make the boat go faster?” was not only the question that Ben and his teammates asked of each other, but is also the title of the book he released in June.

The cream of Solent’s students led a series of practical sessions, symposiums and poster presentations where they shared their ideas, experiences and expertise with coaches, local sports development professionals and more than a few proud parents. Over the course of the day the team of key note presenters alongside Sport Hampshire & IOW’s Director, Julie Amies and Solent’s Professor Jenny Price, formed an industry panel and judged the outputs of the student contributors. Three prizes, sponsored by publishing giant Human Kentics, were presented to students by Ben Hunt Davis. The student recipients were: Group poster: “Young leaders initiative” - Stuart Balfour, Dan Coombs and Alex Butler

Individual poster: “Does incorporating team norms in a team sport increase effort” - Damien Jennings

Verbal presentation: “The use of Self talk in Cricket” - Adam Kelly

Other sponsors included Perform Better, Sigvaris, Newitts, Science in Sport, Dartfish, HaB Direct, and Therapeutics.

Due to the success of the event, organisers are already working on next year’s conference. The theme of next year’s event will be “From Playground to Podium”, focusing on the role of coaches at every level of the player development pathway.
