INSIDE This Issue

Summer and The Stuarts are finally here and we are so thankful. I’ve officially been in Bend for 4 days and each day I’ve found something new for which to thank God. This amazing breeze, all of the fun shops I’ve perused, the plethora of dog parks, and the good people who showed up to help us unpack our 26 foot moving van. God bless them all! The prayer above is one I learned many years ago when I met Father Thomas Keating at a contemplative prayer workshop. It is one that I repeat on a fairly regular basis as I strive for control, and once again remember that the only one I have control of is myself. In the interest of starting this appointment with honesty and openness I must confess to you that my father has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer this week. My sister had breast cancer, and my mother had thyroid cancer, so my family is quite familiar with the ups and downs of a cancer diagnosis. I covet your prayers as I once again remember to let go of my desire for power, control, survival and security. I firmly believe that God holds each one of us in light and love, and that no matter what happens with my father, God will be present. I offer this prayer to you as one that has strengthened me. Summer is here and in full swing! We are looking forward to Vacation Bible School and upcoming Family Picnics. I hope that this summer is full of rejuvenation for you and your family as the long days offer time and space to be outdoors. In worship this summer the leadership team will be focusing on the lectionary which is a sequence or list of lections (passages

of scripture) to be read in church services during the year. Many churches follow the same lectionary. As a faith community we will dig deep into scriptures that Methodists all over the world are studying together. In particular, during the summer months, the lectionary calls us to consider the life and ministry of Christ. Christ’s embodied teachings are fundamental to our faith. It is our hope that by recounting these stories together we may grow in our discipleship. So I encourage you to come worship (when you are in town) with open minds and hearts as we continue in love.

Peace,

Nicole

COMPASSIONATE CARE NEWS The Compassionate Care ministry offers many things to those who come to us for help. We hear so many stories that tug at our hearts as we offer compassion and encouragement. We also offer to pray with those seeking help, letting them know God is aware of their needs and knows their story. We then offer some help with the donations you have provided. In 2 Corinthians 9:12, we are told two good things happen as a result of our gifts (in this case, our donations): those in need are helped and they overflow with thanks to God. You might say we are God's ambassadors by being a church that cares and wants to help others. We can't all be there to meet and listen to these folks who come to us but they understand you all are there in spirit as evidenced by your donations. The needs are as diverse as those seeking help but the end result is the same: they feel hope for a better tomorrow and they know they are not alone, that others care. Some of the ways we help through your donations are to provide funds for a full tank of gas so they can drive to work, or help with the rent so they can continue living in a safe place, or help with electric or water bills to make their life easier. We can also help pay for auto insurance so they can continue using their vehicle to get to and from work, or pay for an Oregon I.D. so they can apply for a job. We help pay for prescriptions so people can meet each day at their best. Some folks are just passing through and need help with a bus ticket to their destination, and some folks live here in the area. Many of these folks want to express their gratitude by helping out around the church, especially on Wednesdays when the Back Door Cafe is in full swing. Some help in the kitchen or with clean up. One young woman donates her time and talents by giving free hair cuts to the patrons on Wednesdays. We hope you realize that when you give with joy, that joy becomes wonder, gratitude, and best of all, hope for those we are able to help.

Dear church family, I could never have made it this far without the shoulders to lean on, the hugs to warm my sad heart and the offers of help in hundreds of ways from our church family. Special thanks to Dave, Nicole, Thom, Glenda, Erin, Sue and crew, Frank, Dalen, Lorraine, Paul Reynolds, the Bowens and the Jepsons, folks at The Cascades and others. I am so blessed. God bless you all. Hugs, Pat Willford and family

Each year UMW collects items to create “kits” for children in need to start off the school year. We will place a collection box in the narthex this summer for you to place your items. It is important that you purchase the correct size as listed below so the items will fit in the cloth bags that are made for these kits. This year the list has changed a little. We will not be collecting laundry detergent, toilet paper, or paper towels as UMW will be purchasing those items in bulk with donated funds. Each of the items below can be purchased for just $1 at the dollar store. If you prefer that we do the shopping, we will be collecting cash/check donations on Sundays in July and August at coffee hour. · 2 bars, bar soap (place in zip-lock bag to contain fragrance) · 1 15 oz. bottle of shampoo · 4 toothbrushes (packaged) · 2 4.6 oz tubes toothpaste · 2 sticks deodorant · 1 30 oz. bottle liquid dish soap For any bottles with flip-top or pop-up tops please tape closed to avoid leakage. Place shampoo, dish and laundry soap upright in a plastic grocery bag and tie handles to help avoid leaks and spills.

Dear Friends at Bend Church, I want to thank you for being such a wonderful, caring group of people. I have received so much love and support, I want to say thanks for the warm wishes, emails, kind words, hugs, cards, positive thoughts, and of course prayers. My surgery went well and now I am onto chemotherapy. I feel so blessed to be a part of this Church family. With gratitude, Karen Wykes

Conference Approves Post GC2019 Fallout Legislation As the Oregon-Idaho Conference and the Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church continue to proclaim they are a “home for all” post-General Conference 2019, there were a few legislative items passed during the annual conference session in Eugene that are reactions and calls for action from churches and leadership in the local Conference. Approved on the Consent agenda was Action Request no. 4, which calls for structural change in the United Methodist Church. Be It Resolved That the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference notify the Council of Bishops that the stipulations of the Traditional Plan are not acceptable for our Conference. Be It Further Resolved That the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference call on the 2020 General Conference to adopt a structural realignment of the United Methodist Church that creates an expression of Wesleyan Methodism that allows for both traditionalist and progressive understandings of LGBTQ Clergy and same-gender weddings to co-exist within the Church in a new way. Be It Further Resolved That the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference call on the General Conference Secretary to release all structural realignment petitions created by General Church or Annual Conference teams one month prior to the petition submission date for 2020 General Conference for public study and feedback, incorporating potential changes before final submission.

Diverse Delegation headed to General Conference 2020

The Oregon-Idaho Conference has voted to send a diverse group of clergy and lay delegates to General Conference 2020 in Minneapolis. Head of the delegation will be Rev. Wendy Woodworth, who is an openly lesbian clergywoman serving Salem’s Morningside UMC a part of Open Door Ministries of Salem-Keizer. Elected again as lay delegate will be Jan Nelson, an openly lesbian member of Salem Morningside UMC and lay leader for the Conference.

Additionally, the Conference selected Esteban Galan of Boise First UMC, Mark Bateman of Salem First UMC and Kylie Nelson of Wesley UMC in Eugene as Western Jurisdiction lay delegates. Galan will also serve as the first reserve lay delegate for General Conference. Revs. Anna Cho of Portland Epworth UMC, Donna Pritchard of Portland First UMC and Jeremy Smith, an Oregon-Idaho elder currently serving in the PNW conference at Seattle First UMC, will serve as Jurisdictional clergy delegates. Cho will also serve as a first reserve clergy delegate for General Conference. In addition to that, Lydia Henry of Gresham First UMC and Carter Lybeck of Trinity United Methodist Church Idaho Falls were approved as reserve lay delegates for jurisdictional conference. Revs. Daryl Blanksma of Trinity UMC Eugene and Julia Nielsen of Portsmouth Union in Portland will serve as clergy reserve delegates for jurisdictional conference.

Annual Conference this year was full of joyous events, time for discussion, electing delegates to General Conference 2020, and work on legislation to help the Oregon- Idaho leadership do their work. It was a joy to attend Pastor Nicole’s ordination service! The opportunity to worship with people from around our conference and to hear messages from Bishop Elaine Stanovsky was a blessing. We had Table Talk time to discuss the decision made at the 2019 Special General Conference where the Traditional Plan was adopted. Results from informal “straw poll” taken of conference attendees showed that most congregations seem to be in favor of “Stay and Resist,” with “Untie the UMC and let new expressions emerge” coming second. We elected a very diverse group of 6 laity and 6 clergy to represent us at General Conference in 2020. They represent a wide age range, experience range, racial diversity, and diversity in sexual orientation. What they all have in common is a love of God and a desire to work on the issues that we are fac-ing as the UMC moves forward. Among the legislation passed were bills that spoke to the actions at the Special General Conference. One being a bill affirming that we want to stay a part of the United Methodist Church; however, a study committee will be formed to investigate ways to disaffiliate as a group, if that is necessary We also heard about the affiliation and contemplated merger of Methodist-sponsored Claremont School of Theology (currently in southern California) with Willamette University in Salem. Full realization of this merger is expected to take several years, but there was a lot of excitement about the possibilities! If you want to read more, go to the Oregon Idaho Annual Conference website: https://www.umoi.org and read the “Conference Report to the UMC”. There is also information about the Special 2019 General Conference at https://greaternw.org. You will hear more about Annual Conference in worship on June 30 or you can ask Nicole Berry, Mike White, or Cindy Pierce about their experiences. We left Eugene feeling hopeful. It will take time to sort out all the issues we face but we are not alone.
