On Friday, October 25 ,we had a UNI student volunteer to paint pumpkins with the patients (and some staff got in on the fun too ).

One patient didn’t think he wanted to participate until he started and then ended up painting two. The Harley Davidson pumpkin is one he is most proud of. On Tuesday, Oct. 29, one of our Pet Pals Therapy dogs, Sophie, visited with the patients and spread some joy all dressed up in her own costume as Snow White! Job Well Done!Last week alone, United Medical Park Patient Access collected over $6,000 in point of service collections! UMP Patient Access opened just a year ago, and gives patients and visitors excellent customer service and strive to make sure patients have a positive experience at each and every visit. Collections are just a small part of their everyday tasks, but they have exceeded expectations by far.

Pictured above are Amy Delagardelle, Angela Vanarsdale, Julie Jorgensen, Kat Backstrom, Melvinna Hayes, & Meagan Smith with small tokens of appreciation made by Lead Tech, Amy Delagardelle.

Horrors...At first we thought the cast of Wicked had come from Des Moines to Allen Hospital to trick or treat, but on second thought, these three characters looked familiar at the Room of Horrors this week. The spider is not what Pam hopes to find in Allen patient beds. Our patients tend to agree.

World Stroke Day, October 29by Jenn Westendorf, Neurology Approximately 795,000 strokes occur each year in the United States. A leading cause of disability, stroke occurs among all age groups, including newborns, children, young adults, and older adults, and will affect one in six persons worldwide during their lifetimes. This year’s theme for World Stroke Day, October 29, is “Because I Care.” It emphasizes that stroke is preventable and the benefits of prevention should be extended to the entire family.

With timely care and support, most stroke survivors can recover and regain their former quality of life. Everyone should take the following actions to reduce their likelihood of having a stroke:

1) know your personal risk factors for stroke, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high blood cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, and a history of having a transient ischemic attack or previous stroke and control or manage these conditions by working with health-care providers

2) engage in physical activity regularly3) maintain a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables4) limit alcohol consumption5) avoid cigarette smoke (if you smoke, seek help to stop now) 6) learn to recognize the warning signs of a stroke* (call 9-1-1 immediately if you think someone is having a stroke)

Welcome Northcrest Specialty Care!Northcrest Specialty Care, the newest addition to the Allen neighborhood, held its ribbon-cutting October 31. Care Initiatives is a non-profit owner/operator of 44 skilled nursing facilities, eight assisted living complexes, four independent living complexes and six hospice sites around the state.

Like the Logan Avenue Hy-Vee, the new Northcrest Specialty Care facility is built on land Allen sold to help develop our neighborhood and community. The facility is light and airy throughout, and it will make a wonderful home and a great Allen neighbor.

Trick or TreatDoes anyone recognize these Allen Hospital clinicians? We think they were planning their Halloween candy collection routes, but no one knows for sure.

WHAT TIME IS IT?Time to turn back your clocks back on Sunday morning, November 3.

CARE COUNTS ALL STARS AND AMBASSADORS NOMINATION STORIES FOR MAY - JULY 2013

Dan Sheldon, Environmental Services: Dan brought me a sling for one of the Hoyer lifts that he found in the garbage. This was a quite expensive find. He also found six Voceras as well that weekend in the garbage. Our equipment is very expensive so we appreciate Dan going above and beyond to help us keep our equipment. I would be very happy if he could find some heart monitors as well some weekend! Thanks, Dan!

Rhonda Stonewall, NICU and Ranae Wiegmann, NICU : Ranae and Rhonda went out of their way to help a mom whose baby was admitted in the NICU. The mom was having problems with low breast milk supply. Ranae and Rhonda pitched in their own money to help this mom purchase Fenugreek tablets to increase her milk supply. Her baby will greatly benefit from their compassion. I believe this is a perfect example of AllenCARE.

Crystal Wilken, 3 Heart: Crystal had a patient who was very anxious, which in turn caused her family members to be anx-ious as well. Crystal contacted the family practice resident with her concerns and was able to obtain orders to care for this patient which in turn eased the anxiety of her family. Crystal handled this situation with compassion and excellence.

Julie Yount, 3 Medical: During the night shift on May 12th, Julie went into a room and noticed the patient’s husband, who was “sleeping” in the chair had an abnormal breathing pattern. Julie quickly assessed him and realized he needed further workup to be done. Julie and several of the other 3 Medical staff members transported the patient’s husband to the ER where he ended up getting admitted and intubated. Without Julie’s excellent critical thinking skills, this visitor would not have gotten the life saving care he needed.
